I want to talk about Bob.

I want to talk about Bob and how fandom treats characters with mental illnesses, because I’m already seeing this shit.

Spoilers below the cut.

His arc is so good, and yet some people are really just focusing on making him into “UwU babygirl” material. I know, this is tumblr, home of the babygirlified characters.

But there’s heavier context here. We’re talking about someone who survived an abusive childhood and overcame the addiction he used to self-medicate for a wildly unrepresented/stigmatized illness.

His memory loss is not cute. It’s traumatic. He’s traumatized.

Yes, it’s important that he absolutely can be seen as a love interest, as a favorite blorbo, as a comfort character. In fact, I think he will be for many people with mental illnesses. His story resonates.

But there’s a systemic, historic pattern of treating mentally ill folks as children, or incapable.

The situation with Valentina is a metaphor for conservatorship. She handles him, makes decisions for him, all while talking down to him.

Don’t let fandom do that to him, too.

the thing that always gets me ESPECIALLY about autistic representation in media is that we are universally portrayed as happy-go-lucky, whimsical children, completely oblivious to the fact that the world constantly judges and scorns and HATES us.

We notice. I noticed. The reason I am as messed up as I am today is because i spent 20 LONG years in an environment where every day i was subjected to that. To noticing.

what an absolutely neurotypical view of us. Coddling themselves, getting to act like the way they treat us is fine because we don't understand that our peers dont respect us. Why would we? We're so subhuman to them, it's like asking if your cat notices you playfully insulting it.

Every autistic person I've ever met is on some level bitter and angry and TRAUMATIZED at their upbringing. Of having to go through school as the laughing stock, as the weirdo with no friends who no one wants to talk to, as the animal in the corner you can make do cheap tricks so they can experience some Simulacra of what genuine human connection is.

Now tell me, does it sound like I didn't notice?

Eryn gently pets the cat, staring numbly at her bloody hands. She presses them against her eyes, and she's honestly half tempted to rip them out. She needs to suffer for what she did. Natemare's family was gone. Those four kids were gone, because of her. No amount of pain would ever add up to the pain she caused. She was a horrible person, if she could even be called one. She feels light-headed, and it occurs that she should probably get herself patched up considering she's got many a wound, some bleeding considerably. No. She won't allow that. That's the coward's way out. She looks back up at Phantom, unsteadily pushing herself to her feet, leaning against the bar. She's aware that the souls that were with her upstairs are standing on the staircase, but they aren't her focus right now.

Eryn doesn't know how long she sleeps for, but she finds herself slowly stirring a while later. She keeps her eyes closed, rolling over and hoping to go back to sleep.

It may have been 3am, but that didn't mean Eryn's guard was any less vigilant, standing stock-still just a few feet away, sword still in her hand. In the time the teen had slept, several more souls had come into the room, all of them with the same palpable tension as Callithie, though none of them had chosen to arm themselves. Every single soul tensed, straightening slightly - in one case sitting up from where they'd been half-laying in the curve of an aerial hoop - looking around for the source. Callithie raised her blade a little higher. "...if shit hits the fan, protect the kid," murmured a soft, southern-accented voice. Lilia shifted slightly, pulling blonde curls up into a more combat-ready ponytail. "None of us can die... she 'ain't so safe from whatever's comin'..."
