Reader has had feelings for her friend Aj for years but hasn’t had the guts to tell her. After being hospitalised and a near death experience Aj ends up telling reader her feelings and it all comes together all the time they’ve spent together and the memories

An angsty fluffy little one shot because im obsessed with billies song ‘birds of a feather’ and thought this would be cute. This took me an hour to write so sorry if it’s bad.

“I want you to stayyy” Aj says dramatically her arm rested over my shoulder as she pouts, standing at her door, keys in hand and helmet in the other I look back at her with a smile, she slaps the back of my head with a sad look. “Hey we are literally going to see each other tomorrow at school don’t be so dramatic” I say with a sigh. She rolls her eyes and takes her arm off my shoulder to let me leave but not before she gives me a tight hug, suffocating even. “Aj I need to breathe, ur gonna kill me here” I say as dramatically as she did seconds ago just as she lets me go. “Fine leave me…forever” she puts her hand over her heart and pulls a sad face, earning a laugh from me. “Shut up stupid, right I’ll see you tomorrow 7am be up or im leaving without you” I say while walking out of the garden and to my bike. She closes the door and I start the engine, pulling the helmet over my head and pulling out of her street. I ride for around ten minutes before I get to some traffic lights, stopping I wait for them to turn green, once they do I make quick work of pulling out in a hurry to get home to my bed, I hear the screech of tires then I feel pain in the right side of my body before my whole body is flung off of my bike and makes contact with a wall. Then darkness. A lot of screaming then beeping then people talking about head scans and X-rays.

(AJS POV…THE NEXT DAY)

I wake up at 6:30 to my alarm blasting in my ear, I jump out of bed with a little struggle and grab the clothes I left out the night before, throwing them on, I check my phone for a text from y/n but nothing. Weird but it’s happened before, she probably forgot to charge her phone or slept in. Hypocrite much. I carry on getting ready then wait for the clock to strike seven before heading outside, looking out for her motorbike. I wait for ten minutes before calling her, nothing. I wait another ten minutes before Gabi comes out of the house giving me a confused look. “Why are you still here? Wheres y/n?” She says throwing her backpack over her shoulder. I shrug and check my phone again “no clue, give me a ride?” I plead and Gabi nods. Once in Gabi’s car I check my phone another three times while she drives. “Jesus who died here?” Gabi says as we stop at some lights. I look up and see debris and a tow truck on the road, police and traffic wardens stood directing the traffic around the mess. I catch a glimpse of a bike on the side of the road and my heart breaks for whoever’s bike it is, my mind wandering off to y/n “god I keep telling them to just get a car but they insist on having that damn bike, and look there another motorbike in an accident” I say to Gabi, she hums in agreement before turning into the schools parking lot. Once parked we say goodbye to each other, our homerooms being in different classrooms “tell y/n I said their a douche for the no heads up this morning” I say before we go out separate ways as Gabi and y/n are in the same homeroom class.

Walking into homeroom I spot Tessa, one of mine and y/n’s closest friends since well forever. Me and y/n would never have met if Tessa didn’t introduce us.

……

Flashback :

Young Tessa runs over to young Aj paint smeared across her face “hide me” a young Tessa shouts toward Aj. In runs another girl. A young y/n, paintbrush in hand and an angry Gabi following her, a spot of red paint on her forehead. “Who’s that” a young Aj says, a blush spread across her face as the young girl and her sister run around trying to paint the others face. “That’s my best friend y/n, wanna meet them?” Tessa asks earning an eager nod from Aj.

……….

“Hey aj, nice hoodie, feeling nostalgic?” The girl pokes fun at me as we both take our seats, I look down at the hoodie and realise what she meant by nostalgic.

Flashback :

The whole gang sit in mine and y/ns hotel room the day before a track meet, alcohol in all of our systems, we play a few games and dance a little before we all end up sitting or lying down somewhere intoxicated out of our minds, y/n had just been through a huge breakup and we are all trying to help her without bringing it up. “I love the outfit but you’re gonna freeze y/n” I say with a laugh as the girl comes out of the bathroom in just her sports bra and some shorts. A blush spreading across my face. “If I turn blue don’t save me” she said while sitting next to me on the floor, taking another sip of her drink, pulling a disgusted expression. “We should really quit drinking while we are ahead we have the meet at 11am” she says “don’t be stupid” I return her gaze, grabbing the drink, she shivers and I take off my hoodie, leaving me in a long sleeved shirt, she takes it and rests her head on my shoulder.

……..

“Funny, speaking of, heard anything from y/n this morning?” I ask while I grab my phone to check again, the girl just shakes her head “you know her she probably didn’t sleep and forgot to charge her phone again” I nod in agreement.

The day goes on and nothing from y/n she hadn’t shown up to school, everyone assumes she just ditched and fell asleep for the day. I try calling her a few times on break but no answer still. It isn’t until track practice that there is any news about her whereabouts.

We all stand on the field waiting on coach when he comes out with a saddened look. “Hey everyone practice is cancelled take the day to rest. Aj, Gabi and Tessa, stay here, we need to talk.” He says allowing everyone to walk back to the changing rooms cheering and smiling. My heart drops already overthinking. “So y/ns mother has just called and she was in an accident” he starts but doesn’t get the time to finish as all three of us are sprinting to the locker rooms to grab our stuff.

We all hop into Gabis car and use google maps to direct us to the nearest hospital. I check my phone and see a missed call from y/n’s brother. I don’t call back just expecting him to tell us the same news we just heard from coach.

Once we get to the hospital Tessa runs to the reception and asks for a room number or anything information on her best friend. Me and Gabi stand a few feet behind praying we are allowed to go in and see y/n. After a few minutes of back and forth Tessa comes over and says “room 344”

We all race up to the room with help from nurses pointing us in the right direction. We end up in the ICU ward and find her room, we walk in and see a doctor checking her vitals or whatever doctors do. He turns to see the three of us stood there looking back at him, my eyes looking solely at y/n. “Hey guys are you y/n’s family, if you’re not you can’t be in here, she’s just came out of surgery and we are only allowing family members in right now.” He stares us down and puts the clipboard down, in a state of panic I turn to him and say “im her fiancé” without thinking, I hold my hand up and show him the ring on my finger. The promise ring y/n gave me as a joke one Valentine’s Day after my first ever girlfriend broke my heart. Even if it was a joke, that ring has never left my hand ever since. Surprisingly the doctor nods and lets us in without another question. “What happened?” I say before Tessa or Gabi can. “Motorbike accident, she has a cracked skull, broken collarbone. We took her to surgery to fix some things but she coded multiple times, we managed to bring her back and we are just keeping her here until we are certain she’s safe to go home.” He says pointing at her while my eyes fill with tears “she’s in an induced coma right now to help with the pain but when she wakes up she’s gonna need you all here to help her through this” I walk over to her and see the damage, broken nose, bust lip and black eye. Bruises litter her skin, the white hospital gown contrasting the purple and blueness of the bruises. I pull a chair over and sit down, grabbing ahold of her hand as the doctor leaves the room, saying something to gabi and Tessa as he leaves earning a nod and thankyou from them both. They both end up sitting on chairs too, Tessa making multiple phone calls while Gabi keeps asking if im okay.

It’s been hours that we’ve been sat here. She’s still asleep I’ve never seen her so peaceful it hurts. I remember all the times we’ve shared. This could be our last. Last night could’ve been our last movie night. “Fine leave me forever” being the last thing I ever said to her. My eyes fill with tears once again and Gabi comes over, placing a hand on my shoulder “you okay?” She asks quietly “I think I love her” I say while shaking my head, tears falling from my eyes. Tessa’s laugh can be heard from the other side of the room as she comes back in. “We know you love her, also doc mchot said she should wake up any time now, so stop throwing a pity party” Tessa says throwing Gabi a cup of jello. “Where did you even get these?” Gabi laughs. “The hot doctor snuck me a few in exchange for my number” she smirks “he’s switching jobs to be a firefighter, next week he starts training” the blonde smirks again. “If y/n was awake right now they would throw this jello cup at your head so hard” I say with a small smile. I feel y/n start to stir in her bed, Gabi and Tessa take this as their sign to leave the room “we will give you two some space” Gabi says, grabbing Tessa’s arm and dragging her along asking about the hot doctor/firefighter.

A groan escapes her mouth as her eyes open slowly, a hand shooting up to rub her eyes. Followed by a hiss of pain. “What the fuck happened?” She says with a laugh “I love you” I blurt out.

(Y/ns pov)

My eyes open and my whole body aches. I bring up a hand to rub my eyes but a shooting pain follows as I hit the bridge of my nose, I bite my lip in agony and bring my hand back down, seeing aj with puffy red eyes, and the fact we are sat in a hospital I look at her again “what the fuck happened?” I ask before laughing a little. She looks me in the eyes and blurts out “I love you” I blink a few times to make sure I am indeed awake and not dead. Once im positive im not in heaven I realise im crying and aj looks at me concerned “I love you too And I don't know what I'm cryin' for, I don't think I could love you more” I blurt out immediately regretting it as I see Tessa and Gabi at the door smirking, we are never going to live this down. So I do the only thing I can think of. Dig myself a deeper hole. “I’ll love you to the day that I die”

I love messing with people (my gf being my main target) who don’t speak Spanish.

Like I’ll just pull up speaking it while staring blankly at them then go back to English as if I didn’t just confuse the fuck out of them

*beep beep* you hear someone honking outside “that must be Damian” Cady says grabbing her backpack “oh ok I’ll be right there I left my headphones in my room” you say quickly going to your room to grab your headphones then running down stairs and getting in the backseat of Damian’s car. “Heyyy (y/n)” “hi Damian” “ok so we’re gonna pick up Janis then heading to the school and making sure you have your schedule then meet up with the rest of the group” Cady says buckling up in the front seat “sounds good to me” you say buckling up

You guys got to Janis’ house and Damian honked his horn. It took about 3 minutes before Janis clumsily stumbled out her front door and to the car “hi” Janis said with an awkward smile as you two made eye contact “hey” you said with a smile on your face as she sat next to you

You guys get to the school and Cady takes you straight to the office telling the others you’ll be back in a minute. “Hello excuse me miss?” Cady says trying to get the lady at the desk’s attention “oh hello dear do you need help with something?” The lady asks “yes my cousin in new here and I just wanted to make sure she has a schedule and that all of her credits transferred from her old school” “oh I can check that right now, what’s you name dear?” The lady asks you “(y/n), (y/n) heron” “ah yep you’re right there and all your credits seem to all be in order, would you like me to print out your schedule now?” “Yes please” Cady answers for you. The lady gives you your schedule and you and Cady head over to the rest of the group to hang out before school starts. “Hey we’re back” cady says enthusiastically “good morning here are your drinks” Regina says handing each of you your cups “thank you Regina” you say sitting down next to Janis who is sketching and drinking her coffee with headphones on not paying attention. You lean on her shoulder trying to get a glance at her sketchbook, accidentally starling her “AH OH MY GOD” “oh um sorry I didn’t mean to startle you” you say feeling really bad and scooting away a little “fuck sorry I didn’t mean to scream like that” she says taking off her headphones “it’s my fault, don’t apologize, I should’ve tapped you before invading your space” you say feeling like an idiot “it’s ok…do you want to see what I was drawing?” she asks hoping you’ll say yes “oooo yes I’d love to” you say scooting close to her again, she shows you some of her more recent projects. While you two were talking the rest of the group was observing you two from a small distance. “You guys are seeing this right?” Regina said with a small laugh “if you’re referring to Janis being a dorky lesbian then yes I see it” Damian says smiling a little “you know (y/n) isn’t normally this close with people, she normally keeps a decent amount of physical distance but this, this is definitely new” Cady adds to the conversation. You and Janis are practically in your own world, laughing and talking about her different art pieces and the inspiration behind them “wait so you’re telling me that you made this based off a Kids cartoon you were watching while high as fuck?” You say looking at a very colorful detailed drawing that had some embroidery on it “yeah and surprisingly I didn’t stab myself making it” Janis says laughing a bit then making eye contact with you for a few seconds before you both turned away, you looked at your hands and Janis looked up at the sky “Hey (Y/n) what classes did you get?” Regina asks and you hand her your schedule “ooo yay we all have the same home room, break, and lunch this year” Gretchen says looking over Regina’s shoulder at your schedule Gretchen already had everyone else’s schedule memorized since they all got their schedules over break. *ring* *ring* “well that’s the bell let’s head to homeroom” Cady says with a smile putting on her backpack and holding Regina’s hand while you all walk to class, you and Janis are in the back of the group walking close to each other but both focused on your phones, you’re texting your friend from back home and Janis is looking at what yarn to buy for her new project. Once you guys get to homeroom the group decided to sit together until they inevitable get separated for talking too much. “Good Morning class, happy Monday, My name is Mrs. Norbury and I will be your home room teacher this year, I was just informed we have a new student here from Florida so everyone please welcome (Y/N) and be kind to her” Mrs. Norbury says “thank you Mrs. Norbury” you say a little awkward Cady kindly puts her hand on your shoulder to comfort you. You’re doodling for like 10 minutes when you feel a light tap on your shoulder, it’s Janis you look at her a little confused then she shows you her sketchbook, it’s a small sketch of the friend group and to your surprise you see an in progress sketch of yourself. This causes you to blush a little, you’re not exactly sure why but you face definitely felt warm and there was definitely butterflies in your stomach “woah that’s really cool” you say quietly “thank you” Janis says turning away quickly, was Janis- no she couldn’t be blushing from such a simple compliment. The rest of class is pretty quiet with you two showing each other progress from your sketches. Class ended and you went to your next class saying good bye to Janis. You almost smile at how defensive Janis got for Karen seeing this caring side of her melted your heart in the best way. The break ended and you headed to study hall with Janis since none of your teachers were crazy enough to give you homework on the first day you and Janis talked quietly in the back about the different types of art she liked and how she does a lot of mixed media art. Every time you talk to Janis about art it feels like you two are the only two people on earth and like time stop. When the period ended she decided to walk you to theater since her class was in the same direction. Though you haven’t known her that long Janis made you feel really special, it was weird you felt like you didn’t need to put your walls up to protect yourself, you were just you. Exchanging goodbyes and saying you’d see each other at lunch. Theater was fun and easy, you played a name game

you played a name game so everyone could introduce themselves and then a few other games. The bell rang. Lunch time!

The cafeteria was honestly kind of chaotic but you ended up spotting Cady’s red hair very easily. You sat across from Cady knowing Regina would be siting next to her “hey cads” “hi (y/n) how were your classes?” “Good, how about yours?” “Eh pretty boring” Regina, Gretchen, and Karen come over giggling about something “I’m gonna go get cheese fries does anyone else want anything while I’m up?” Regina says “water please” you say and she gives you a nod “hmm i don’t know surprise me?” Cady says with a shrug. Regina leaves Gretchen and Karen follow as Damian and Aaron come over “no dude I’m telling you sports are way less complicated than that” Aaron says trying to convince Damian to watch some sport game with him “hey Damian where’s Janis?” You say a little worried “oh she’s in the art room she wanted to ask Ms. Jones if she had some yarn Janis could use” “oh ok…is she coming to lunch?” “Yeah she should be back in like 5? minutes” a few minutes later Regina, Karen, and Gretchen come to the table then Janis comes over and sits next to you taking one of your chips “Hey!” You say moving your chip bag away from her and she laughs “what you can’t share 1 chip with me?” Janis jokes “I can but you could’ve at least asked silly” you say laughing a bit “ok after school we should totally go to Regina’s house” Karen said “oh absolutely, my mom said that she misses you guys” Regina say.

Art class goes the same as all of the other classes you’ve had with Janis but this time you paint it’s really good quality paint especially since it’s from the school. You and Janis have been close all day. “Alright last class of the day, have fun” Janis says “you too, see you at Damian’s car?” You say “yeah see you later” she gives your hand a small squeeze then heads off to her class. You were definitely blushing from that, ugh this girl has only been your friend for 3 days but this felt different a good difference.
