โœ— Sugar And Sin โœ— | PARK SEONGHWA

it was official. you were a walking, unkillable creature sent to test seonghwaโ€™s patience.ย

you had to be at this point. that was the sixth poisoned-cream puff heโ€™d given you this week and you were still talking on the phone about some guy you met at work.ย

seonghwaโ€™s fingers curled around the register, his knuckles turning white. when was the last time it took him this long to kill someone? five years ago?

time flies by fast - and yet itโ€™s going painfully slow to take. you. out.ย

โ€œoh my god, no way-โ€œ you laughed suddenly, interrupting his thoughts.ย

seonghwa sighed, resisting the urge to roll his eyes. he turned around and headed for the kitchen. if you werenโ€™t going to die quickly, the least he could do was distract himself.ย

โ€œback to baking,โ€ he muttered through clenched teeth.ย

1 MONTH AGO - SIGHTSEEING

the early morning was cool, damp and filled with the scent of rain. the light drizzle from the grey sky above pattered against the balcony railing as birds chirped louder than the traffic below.

seonghwa sat on the metal chair, placing his steaming cup of tea onto the small table next to him.ย

the balcony door slid open.ย

a yawn was heard from behind him. โ€œare you people-watching again?โ€ hongjoong asked, rubbing his eyes.ย

seonghwa didnโ€™t look back, only nodding in response.

โ€œyouโ€™re on food duty now, remember?โ€ hongjoong stepped onto the balcony, sitting on the chair beside his friend. โ€œyou donโ€™t need to look for targets..โ€

seonghwa leaned forward, mumbling, โ€œis it wrong to have hobbies?โ€ย

the morning rush was in full swing - people running with umbrellas over their heads, cars splashing through puddles and delivery workers speeding on bikes. it was oddly satisfying to watch, especially when you werenโ€™t a part of any of it.

hongjoong rested his chin on his hand. โ€œi donโ€™t pay you to kill anymore. i hope you know this.โ€

โ€œyeah, yeah,โ€ seonghwa said absentmindedly, like heโ€™d done many times before - though something caught his attention.

his eyes narrowed, focusing on a girl - must be in her early 20s, hurrying down the sidewalk with a large stack of papers in her arms. her steps were rushed, nearly bumping into the people ahead of her.

and then it happened.

she tripped over her own foot, causing her to stumble forward. the papers flew out of her grasp, scattering onto the crowded pavement. she dropped to her knees, scurrying to gather them.

but before she could, a gust of wind swept most of them down the street.

seonghwa got up from his chair abruptly, his tea long forgotten.

hongjoong raised an eyebrow. โ€œdid you see something?โ€

seonghwa didnโ€™t answer. his attention was fixed on you, your hands moving as fast as possible to salvage the remaining papers. just as you managed to grab a few, a van sped through a nearby puddle, splashing you from head to toe.

you froze, shivering. and to make things worse, the light rain turned into a heavy downpour. โ€œ...fuck!โ€

seonghwaโ€™s eyes lit up in fascination.ย

heโ€™d never seen someone as unlucky, unfortunate and pathetic as you in all of his years.ย

you were perfect.

โ€œseonghwa-?โ€

a slow, almost predatory smirk spread across seonghwaโ€™s lips. he couldnโ€™t take his eyes off of you - the defeated and helpless girl that stood frozen on the pavement, completely drenched.ย

โ€œi found my target.โ€

2 WEEKS AGO - ITโ€™S CALLED EMPLOYMENTย

the smell of fresh bread and melted butter greeted you as you pushed the bakery door open, the small bell jingling.ย

โ€œah โ€˜____โ€™!โ€ the old baker, mrs earl, said with a smile. โ€œitโ€™s good to see you again.โ€

you gave her a bright grin. โ€œi brought you the new crossword,โ€ you placed a folded newspaper on the counter.

โ€œoh honey, youโ€™re an angel,โ€ she thanked.

you waved off the praise, already making your way to the display case. you grabbed your free muffin (it wasnโ€™t technically free, but mrs earl adored you enough to turn a blind eye) and took a bite.

as you ate, she wiped her hands with a dishcloth. โ€œyou know, a boy came in today. said he wanted a job.โ€

you raised an eyebrow. โ€œsomeone applied?โ€ย

โ€œmhm,โ€ she nodded, her smile widening. โ€œi was quite shocked, heโ€™s very young- around your age.โ€

โ€œ..huh,โ€ you said, unsure of how to respond. it was hard to imagine someone else your age showing interest in such a bakery.

mrs earlโ€™s eyes twinkled as she giggled, โ€œhe was such a gentleman, too. handsome, if i may add.โ€

you grinned. โ€œmrs earl, are you into him?โ€

she laughed heartily. โ€œof course not! i still have my boys at the country club..โ€

โ€œ..anyways,โ€ she continued, slightly softer. โ€œwith him around, i donโ€™t need to come in anymore.โ€

โ€œ...really?โ€

she nodded firmly. โ€œwhy not? i think heโ€™s capable enough to manage things while i go on vacation.โ€

โ€œ..if you say so,โ€ you replied, a little doubtful.ย

youโ€™ve grown so attached to mrs earl that the idea of someone else stepping in felt.. strange. even then, you quickly pushed those thoughts away. you werenโ€™t going to stop her from having her well-deserved break.

but little did you know - across the street, seonghwa sat on a weathered bench, his eyes following you.ย

you were an open book, he realised. your patterns were consistent, your routine almost boring in its predictability. lunch breaks at the bakery. post-work visits for a chat and a muffin. your world revolved around this tiny little bakery that it made you so so easy to track.

it was perfect.

and now all he had to do was wait.

1 WEEK AGO - HEY I JUST MET YOU, AND THIS IS CRAZY

holy shit.ย

mrs earl wasnโ€™t kidding when she said the new hire was handsome.

a man stood behind the counter, arranging pastries with meticulous care. his hair fell perfectly, right out of a shampoo commercial, while his skin looked impossibly flawless and clean.ย

โ€œ...wow,โ€ you breathed out before you could stop yourself.

the man turned, his sharp features softened by a slight tilt of his head.ย

you blinked rapidly, scrambling to recover. โ€œi mean- hi!โ€ you blurted with a nervous laugh. โ€œiโ€™m โ€˜____โ€™, iโ€™m a regular here,โ€ you stuck your hand out.

it took a second before he shook your hand, giving you a small, polite smile. โ€œmrs earl told me about you.โ€

your rubbed the back of your neck. โ€œgood things i hope..โ€ you chuckled, earning a nod.ย

โ€œyouโ€™re..โ€ you looked down, squinting to read the name tag pinned neatly to his apron. โ€œseonghwa..?โ€

โ€œcorrect.โ€

as seonghwa moved to the display case, you couldnโ€™t help but watch him. everything about him was so polished, so graceful - it was like he belonged in the movies.ย

when you saw the row of pastries he was arranging, you raised an eyebrow. thatโ€™s different.ย

he glanced at you. โ€œsorry, i donโ€™t make muffins as good as mrs earl,โ€ he admitted sheepishly. โ€œbut i think my cream puffs are up there.โ€

you stared at the tray of golden, perfectly piped pastries, your mouth watering. โ€œc-can i take one?โ€

his lips curled into a faint smirk, his eyes darkening slightly. โ€œof course.โ€

PRESENT - PLOT ARMOUR GOES CRAZYY

outside, the world bustled with its usual chaos, but inside the bakery? everything felt calm - too calm for seonghwa, whose patience was wearing dangerously thin.

from behind the counter, he had an excellent view of you. you chatted animatedly on the phone, the sunlight streaming in making you look annoyingly serene for someone who shouldnโ€™t be here.ย

โ€œgirl- the guy at my office is cutee,โ€ you said as you stirred the remnants of your coffee.

seonghwaโ€™s jaw tightened. the coffee you were sipping had enough poison to kill a sumo wrestler. you shouldโ€™ve been dead on the floor by now.

so how the hell were you still alive?

blissfully unaware of his glare, you laughed at something your friend said. โ€œare you crazy? why should i make the first move?โ€

when he first saw you, seonghwa thought youโ€™d be his easiest target yet. he almost pitied you. your sheer unluckiness practically screamed death.ย

yet here you were, as if life itself decided to mock him.

as you hung up the call, you stood up and strolled to the counter, rummaging through your bag. โ€œhow much do i owe you?โ€

seonghwa shook his head, sighing. โ€œitโ€™s on the house,โ€ he said.ย

you paused, slipping your phone into your pocket. โ€œseonghwa, you really need to stop giving me free food,โ€ you pulled out a ten-dollar bill.

โ€œbut i want to,โ€ he shrugged.ย

you studied him for a moment, tilting your head. โ€œthen can i get another coffee to-go, please?โ€

his eye twitched.

it was such an harmless request, something seemingly so simple. yet it felt like an insult to his entire career.

still, seonghwa forced a smile, taking the cash. โ€œof course.โ€

turning to the coffee pot, he poured another cup. when you looked away to check your phone, he sprinkled a little extra poison into the drink - just to be sure.

โ€œthank you so much,โ€ your face lit up as you took the cup from him. โ€œyouโ€™re a lifesaver.โ€

the irony hit him like a truck, but he simply nodded.

as you turned to leave, he stared at the coffee pot, his mind spinning.

how? how?

you were unkillable. immune. an anomaly wrapped in plot armour so thick and absurd it made his chest ache with something he couldnโ€™t name.ย

obsession, frustration, fascination - it all blurred together into one singular thought:

he needed stronger poison.

โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜

โ€œ..helloo?โ€ a hand waved in front of seonghwa, snapping him out of his thoughts.

seonghwa blinked, turning to find wooyoung standing beside him, wooden spoon in hand, his apron splattered in sauces.ย

โ€œyouโ€™re sanding the plate,โ€ wooyoung smirked before turning back to the bubbling pot on the stove.ย

the sound of running water filled the hideoutโ€™s small kitchen, together with the clanging of pots and pans. seonghwa stood over the sink, yellow rubber gloves on his hands as he washed the dishes.

seonghwa looked down - and to his horror, heโ€™d been scrubbing the same spot on the plate for who knows how long. a noticeable mark formed, the glaze nearly wearing off.ย

wooyoung glanced over his shoulder. โ€œyou okay?โ€

โ€œyeah,โ€ seonghwa replied.

a short silence followed before wooyoung spoke up again. โ€œโ€ฆyou still havenโ€™t killed that girl.โ€

seonghwa rolled his eyes, nearly breaking the ceramic in his hands. โ€œdonโ€™t remind me. sheโ€™s invincible.โ€

โ€œinvincible?โ€ wooyoung barked out a laugh, his shoulders shaking. โ€œto you?โ€

seonghwaโ€™s lips pressed into a thin line, sighing. the memory of the coffee earlier was still fresh in his mind. โ€œmy poison doesnโ€™t work on her.โ€

wooyoung paused. โ€œwe have poison?โ€

โ€œyeah,โ€ seonghwa muttered, rinsing the plate and setting it on the drying rack. โ€œthe blue ones in the cupboard.โ€

wooyoungโ€™s face shifted slowly from confusion, to realisation, to then poorly concealed amusement.

โ€œseonghwa..โ€ he began carefully, facing him. โ€œyou know those are laxatives, right..?โ€

the sponge in seonghwaโ€™s hand nearly slipped into the soapy water. โ€œ..what?โ€

โ€œtheyโ€™re laxatives,โ€ wooyoung repeated. โ€œi mean, they do look the same, but theyโ€™re laxatives.โ€ย

seonghwa stared at him. โ€œthose are the only ones left- what happened to my poison?โ€

โ€œwe uh-โ€ wooyoung hesitated, shifting on his feet. โ€œwe crushed it up and made paint..โ€

the air in the kitchen turned deathly still.

โ€œyou what?โ€

โ€œi thought no one used it-!โ€

โ€œi use it-! who makes paint with pills?โ€ seonghwa snapped, his hands gripping the edges of the sink. he exhaled deeply, forcing himself to stay calm. โ€œnow i have to get more from that dealer.โ€

โ€œuhh..โ€ wooyoung cringed.

seonghwa turned to him, narrowing his eyes. โ€œdonโ€™t tell me..โ€

wooyoung gulped, nodding slowly. โ€œ...san killed him.โ€ย

WEEK 3 - TOUCH GRASS

the sound of your best friendโ€™s voice echoed from your phone as you sat by the window, nibbling on the cream puff seonghwa gave you - again.

โ€œi know this is TMI,โ€ you said quietly. โ€œbut iโ€™ve been shitting a lot lately. i donโ€™t know if it's my period or lactose intolerance acting up.โ€

as you took another bite, the cream puff melted in your mouth, its sweetness making you temporarily forget about your bowel issues.ย

rejecting it felt stupid - it was free. sure, it was weird that seonghwa kept giving you free food, but mrs earl trusted him, so why shouldnโ€™t you?

still, you couldnโ€™t quite figure him out. the man had a habit of glaring at you from across the bakery. were you that pretty? yes. but his glares didnโ€™t feel like he was admiring you. they leaned more towardsโ€ฆ anger.

your friend on the other end of the call burst out laughing - and you joined her for a moment. but before your friend could reply, your phone screen went black.ย

โ€œugh, seriously?โ€ you grumbled, tapping the screen repeatedly. with an annoyed sigh, you stuffed the dead phone into your bag.

with nothing else to do, your attention shifted. your eyes eventually landed on seonghwa, who was watching you with a blank face.ย

it wouldnโ€™t hurt to get to know him, right? after all, you see him everyday - and since your phone died, maybe itโ€™s finally time to get some real human interaction in.

you gave him a wide smile. โ€œhey, seonghwa.โ€

he blinked, visibly startled. โ€œi uh-โ€

โ€œ-why donโ€™t you sit with me?โ€ you asked. โ€œyouโ€™re not busy, are you?โ€ย

for a moment, he seemed frozen. but somehow, you managed to convince him to sit across from you.

โ€œso...โ€ you began. โ€œhow are you?โ€

โ€œgood.โ€

you blinked. this wasnโ€™t the riveting conversation you were hoping for.

unfazed, you continued. โ€œhowโ€™s work been? stressful?โ€

he exhaled softly, shaking his head. โ€œitโ€™s fine. how about you? howโ€™s work?โ€

โ€œitโ€™s alright,โ€ you shrugged. โ€œitโ€™s gotten better since i started coming here. the vending machines at work are always broken.โ€

he nodded, his fingers drumming lightly on the table. โ€œyeah- itโ€™s even more convenient since itโ€™s walking distance, right?โ€

you paused.ย

โ€œ...how do you know that?โ€

seonghwaโ€™s fingers froze mid-tap.ย

โ€œmrs earl,โ€ he said finally. โ€œshe said a lot of her regulars work in the area.โ€

โ€œoh, that makes sense,โ€ you said, your suspicions fading quickly. you glanced out the window, your face softening. โ€œi miss her..โ€

seonghwa let out a quiet sigh of relief, nodding as though he agreed with you.

but inside, his mind was screaming. that was way too close.ย

focus.

โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜

you kicked your shoes and slumped onto the couch, letting out a long sigh. the day had been.. something. your chat with seonghwa was pretty awkward, but more than anything, it made you miss mrs earl.

reaching for your phone, you dialed her number.

โ€œโ€˜____โ€™! my favourite customer,โ€ she greeted cheerfully, the background noise filled with chatter and clinking glasses.

โ€œmrs earl!โ€ you replied. โ€œhow are you? are the boys at your country club treating you well?โ€

โ€œoh, you know how they are,โ€ she giggled. โ€œtrying to impress me with golf and fancy dinners. itโ€™s nice to relax for a change.โ€

you chuckled, sinking deeper into the couch. โ€œthat sounds perfect. you deserve it.โ€

the conversation flowed easily unlike the one earlier. you updated her on the usual - work and office gossip. but eventually, the topic drifted to the bakery.

โ€œi hope the new boy hasnโ€™t burned the place down,โ€ mrs earl began.

โ€œheโ€™s actually a pretty good baker,โ€ you said. โ€œhis cream puffs are unreal-โ€

you paused for a moment before you added. โ€œthough i have to say, they make my stomach hurt whenever i eat them.โ€

the line went quiet.

โ€œ...please elaborate,โ€ mrs earl chuckled softly.

โ€œi mean- i donโ€™t know,โ€ you shrugged, even though she couldnโ€™t see it. โ€œafter i eat his pastries, my trips to the toilet areโ€ฆ traumatic.โ€ you let out a small laugh. โ€œbut theyโ€™re so tasty, itโ€™s worth the lactose intolerance.โ€

another silence followed, longer this time. you frowned slightly, shifting on the couch.ย

โ€œmrs earl?โ€

her voice finally came through, slower this time. โ€œthatโ€™s.. impossible, my dear.โ€

โ€œwhat do you mean?โ€ you asked, sitting a little straighter.

โ€œwell,โ€ she began carefully. โ€œthe bakery strictly uses oat milk. we donโ€™t use any dairy products in our pastries.โ€

โ€œ...what?โ€

โ€œthe cream, the milk- everything is plant-based,โ€ she continued. โ€œitโ€™s been that way for years. didnโ€™t i tell you that when you first came in?โ€

you opened your mouth to respond, but no words came out.

mrs earlโ€™s voice broke the silence again. โ€œit could be something else. youโ€™ve been stressed, havenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œyeah..โ€ you replied automatically, though your thoughts were far from the conversation.

โ€œtake care of yourself, honey,โ€ she said gently. โ€œi have to go, but call me again soon, okay?โ€

you nodded. โ€œokay.. bye, mrs earl.โ€

โ€œstay well, โ€˜____โ€™.โ€

the call ended, leaving you sitting on the couch, phone in hand. for a long moment, you stared at the screen, her voice echoing in your head.ย

the bakery strictly uses oat milk.

MONTH 1 - I WAS SPACING OUT

you sat at your regular table by the window, flipping through your notebook while sipping on your coffee.

you tapped your pencil against the table. yes, โ€˜traumaticโ€™ was probably an exaggeration for your bathroom trips - but if there was no dairy in seonghwaโ€™s cream puffs, then what was messing with your stomach?

you quickly shook your head, a sigh escaping your lips. โ€˜too weird to think about,โ€™ you thought to yourself. whatever it was, the food was worth it.

you returned back to sketching, taking out your ruler to make straight lines. but as you drew, you couldnโ€™t help but feel a certain someoneโ€™s eyes on you.ย

โ€œyouโ€™re staring again,โ€ you said without looking up.ย

a long pause settled over the bakery before you heard a, โ€œ..no, i wasnโ€™t.โ€

you glanced up, a smile tugging at your lips. โ€œwanna see what iโ€™m working on?โ€ย

and that was how seonghwa found himself unusually close to you, sitting beside you as you showed him your sketches - clean lines forming buildings, bridges and intricate floor plans.ย

โ€œyou like drawing?โ€ he asked.

โ€œyeah,โ€ you nodded, flipping to another page. โ€œi wanted to be an architect.โ€ย

seonghwaโ€™s brow furrowed slightly. โ€œthen why arenโ€™t you doing it?โ€ย

you let out a laugh. โ€œbecause iโ€™m broke,โ€ you said simply. โ€œiโ€™d rather work in an office than take out student loans.โ€ย

you flipped through more sketches - some labelled with small notes in the margins while others had more detailed calculations. โ€œitโ€™s just a little hobby of mine.โ€

seonghwaโ€™s eyes darted between you and the notebook. โ€œthis doesnโ€™t look like a hobby,โ€ he muttered.

you raised an eyebrow. โ€œwhat does it look like then?โ€

โ€œit looks like something youโ€™re serious about.โ€ย

you paused, blinking at him before leaning closer. โ€œiโ€™m serious about a lot of things, seonghwa- but that doesnโ€™t mean i make a career out of them.โ€

the silence between you stretched as you flipped through the pages. the energy shifted to something you couldnโ€™t quite explain - and as you tilted the notebook to show him a certain sketch, you realised that his eyes werenโ€™t even on the paper anymore, they were on you.ย

you sighed, closing the notebook. as you slipped it into your bag, you noticed how his eyes were still following you, sharp yet strangely soft with concern.

โ€œdonโ€™t worry-โ€ you said, smoothing out your clothes. โ€œiโ€™m perfectly content with where i am now.โ€

โ€œare you?โ€ he asked.

you met his eyes for a moment longer than usual. โ€œyep,โ€ you finished the last sip of your coffee. โ€œhow could i not be? free cream puffs and all, right?โ€

seonghwa didnโ€™t respond.

โ€œthanks for looking at my sketches,โ€ you smiled, turning away. โ€œhope i didnโ€™t bother you.โ€

as he watched you walk out the door, he let out a slow sigh he didnโ€™t realise he was holding, running a hand through his hair.

he stared up at the ceiling, leaning back into the chair. and for the first time in a long time, seonghwa felt sympathy.ย

MONTH 2 - FRIENDSHIP IS MAGICย

over the past few weeks, you developed the habit of waving seonghwa over to join you whenever you stopped by the bakery. what started as polite small talk turned into embarrassing work stories you had.

this afternoon was no different. you sat across from him, coffee in one hand and a half-eaten cookie in the other, complaining about your friendsโ€™ latest questionable decision.

โ€œyeah, she doesnโ€™t listen to me,โ€ you took a bite out of the cookie. โ€œlike- why fuck him if you hate him, yโ€™know?โ€

behind his usual composed self, you caught the faintest twitch of seonghwaโ€™s lips, followed by a sound so soft you almost missed it - a low chuckle.

you froze mid-bite. โ€œdid you just.. laugh?โ€

seonghwa raised an eyebrow. โ€œyeah..?โ€

you leaned forward, eyes wide with excitement. โ€œiโ€™ve never seen you laugh before.โ€

โ€œiโ€™m sure you have,โ€ he blinked.

โ€œno, i wouldโ€™ve remembered it,โ€ you shook your head, grinning. โ€œi like it.โ€

seonghwa choked, caught off guard. before he could even respond or process what you said, his phone buzzed in his apron pocket. he glanced at the screen and frowned.

โ€œexcuse me,โ€ he said, heading to the small kitchen in the bakery, leaving you slightly confused.

โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜

seonghwa pressed the phone to his ear. โ€œwhat?โ€ he asked.

โ€œi got your poison ready,โ€ sanโ€™s voice came through.

seonghwa nearly dropped his phone, swallowing the lump in his throat. โ€œ...really?โ€

โ€œyeah- you wanted it extra strong, right?โ€ san continued. โ€œit took some tweaking, but itโ€™s ready to go.โ€

the bakerโ€™s eyes darted to the half-open kitchen door. he could almost picture you sitting on the other side of it. โ€œrightโ€ฆ good.โ€

this was it. no more laxatives, no more delays.

itโ€™s real now.

the thought of finishing the job left a strange knot in his chest - not dread exactly, but something close to it.

he wasnโ€™t supposed to feel this way - no, heโ€™s never felt this way. his work had always been detached. he never tried to make connections outside of the world of crime, didnโ€™t deal with people who werenโ€™t tied to his web of blood.

not until you came along.

you talked to him like he was.. normal. like he was a regular guy in a regular bakery.

he was finally seen as a person, not a killer.ย

it was refreshing.ย

โ€œhello?โ€ sanโ€™s voice broke him out of his thoughts.

โ€œi uh-โ€œ seonghwa cleared his throat, realising that he was silent for too long. โ€œjust leave the poison on my desk. iโ€™ll get it later.

โ€œsure,โ€ san replied before adding, โ€œbut donโ€™t overthink it, okay? just get it done.โ€

seonghwa hung up, staring at his phone for a moment before slipping it back into his pocket.

just get it done.

โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜

from your seat, you only caught bits and pieces of seonghwaโ€™s call. you didnโ€™t mean to listen in, but your ears got carried away.ย

his voice was low and hard to hear, muffled by the thin walls of the bakery - but one word stood out: poison.

your brows furrowed as you leaned back into your chair, the word echoing in your mind. poison? like food poisoning? did he get it? was that what you had?

you pushed those thoughts out of your mind. after all, what were the odds that your new friend seonghwa said something like โ€˜poisonโ€™ in a bakery of all places? you mustโ€™ve misheard.

the door creaked open as seonghwa stepped out, dusting his apron off as he walked back to the table.

โ€œsorry about that,โ€ he said, sitting across from you.

you tilted your head. โ€œeverything okay?โ€

โ€œyeah,โ€ he replied - but you swear you caught a hint of guilt in his eyes. โ€œwhere were we?โ€

MONTH 3 - THIS ISNโ€™T FUN ANYMORE

you wandered through the aisles that had shelves lined with tools, appliances and decorations. mrs earl invited you out for a little shopping spree, wanting to pick out a few things for her house.

as she inspected a stack of plates, something caught your attention - a small set of colourful forks, each with cute designs of fruits and animals.

โ€œthese are adorable,โ€ you muttered as you picked it up.

mrs earl looked over your shoulder. โ€œi didnโ€™t know you liked these things.โ€

you shook your head, laughing softly. โ€œoh- i do, but this is for seonghwa.โ€

โ€œfor seonghwa?โ€ she raised an eyebrow.

โ€œyeah,โ€ you nodded. โ€œheโ€™s always giving me free food. i just thought itโ€™d be nice to get him something.โ€

mrs earlโ€™s lips curved into a knowing smile, though she said nothing. instead, she patted your shoulder and moved to examine another shelf.

over the past few weeks, seonghwa had become quite a good friend of yours. after all, you saw him everyday and you started to look forward to his presence whenever you stopped by.

and honestly? youโ€™ve been wanting to pay him back for ages. all the free pastries, coffees and times he let you ramble on about work without looking annoyed. he needed.. compensation, if that was what it was called.

you sighed. what if he thought you were weird? well, it didnโ€™t really matter - you wanted to do this.

โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜

the bakery was quiet and empty. seonghwa stood at the counter, his fingers gripping a small packet of crushed pills in one hand and the coffee you ordered in the other.

the poison felt heavier that it should, sinking into his palm as a reminder of what he was about to do. his mind spun, his thoughts fuzzy.

was this really happening?

he stared at the packet, his breathing shallow. it took him longer than usual to go near the wretched thing, let alone hold it. now, standing with the poison scarily close to your coffee, the reality set in.

your life was in his hands.

seonghwaโ€™s chest tightened. he could just stop, throw the poison away, pour the coffee down the sink and pretend that none of this happened. after all, no one was forcing him to do this - except himself.

he sighed shakily, his fingers trembling as he began to shove the poison into his pocket.

but then the door swung open. you werenโ€™t supposed to be back yet.

โ€œhey seonghwa-!โ€

your voice startled him. his eyes snapped to the door as you walked in with paper bags, followed by mrs earl.

โ€œi got you something-โ€œ you said before your smile faltered, your eyes landing on the packet in his hand. โ€œis that.. wait- is that drugs?โ€

seonghwa coughed, fully shoving it into his pocket quickly. โ€œno- itโ€™s not-โ€

your eyes narrowed - and before seonghwa could react, you went behind the counter and reached into his pocket, pulling out the packet.

โ€œwait-โ€

your lips parted as you read the label. โ€œ...poison?โ€ you breathed out.

the words hung in the air.

your eyes darted to the coffee cup still clutched in his other hand. it was unmistakably yours, your drink order obvious. and it didnโ€™t take long for the pieces to click.

โ€œare you-โ€œ you gulped. โ€œ...are you trying to kill me?โ€ you asked, your voice trembling.

seonghwa stood frozen, unable to respond.ย

mrs earl, who was trailing behind, looked at the packet in your hand, then at seonghwa.

โ€œwhat is the meaning of this?โ€ she demanded. she stormed over to him, grabbing a nearby towel and smacking it across his shoulder. โ€œi trusted you with my food! my bakery! and this is what you do?!โ€

seonghwa flinched but didnโ€™t resist. his eyes, however, werenโ€™t on mrs earl - they were on you.

you were completely still, the poison clutched in your hands.ย

seonghwa opened his mouth to say something - anything, but the words died before they could form. you couldnโ€™t even look at him, your eyes wide and unfocused.

ignoring how his chest tightened, he turned and dashed - leaving nothing but silence in the bakery.

mrs earl paced angrily, muttering curses under her breath. but you didnโ€™t hear her - you couldnโ€™t. your eyes remained fixed on the packet, your breathing heavy.

you sat down, throwing the poison far away from you. your heart pounded in your chest, each beat louder than the last.ย

holy shit.

he was going to kill you.ย

MONTH 4 - ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?

you leaned back in your seat, stretching your arms above your head. you powered down your computer, your office building quiet - working overtime seemed more tiring than usual.

you grabbed your bag, slinging it over your shoulder when your eyes landed on a small box tucked into the corner of your desk.

the fork set.

for weeks, you avoided looking at it. the sight of it was a reminder of the bakery - your now-dead friendship with seonghwa and the moment you realised he tried to kill you.

why did you even keep this?

you didnโ€™t want to bring it home. you didnโ€™t want to keep it at all. maybe it was time to throw it away and be done with it.ย

you stepped out of your office building, the streets eerily silent. the only source of light you had were the streetlights that shined yellow light onto the pavement.

you clenched the fork set in your hands.

poison.

the word did circles around your mind, sending an uncomfortable feeling throughout your body. was that why your stomach always hurt after eating his pastries? was he actually trying to poison you the whole time?

the idea of it stung. you thought back to all the times you trusted him, to all the times you talked.

was any of it even real?

your thoughts were interrupted by the faint sight of movement you caught from the corner of your eye.

you stopped, glancing to the alley to your left. at first, it was hard to make out what you were seeing, the shadows dark. but then you froze.

a man stood there, holding a gun.

and someone else was infront of him, pinned against the wall.

your breath hitched when you realised who it was.

seonghwa.

his eyes locked onto yours, wide with fear as the gunman barked something you couldnโ€™t hear. his face was bruised, blood smeared along his jaw and soaking his shirt.

you gulped.

this man tried to kill you. you could just.. walk away, pretend this didnโ€™t happen.

you took a step back, everything in your body telling you to leave. but then, seonghwaโ€™s trembling hand reached toward you, his fingers shaking as he silently pleaded.

shit.

you donโ€™t know what compelled you - pity or something else entirely, but your grip tightened on the box in your hand. quickly, you opened it, grabbing the first fork you saw.

without thinking, you chucked it at the gunman.

the fork struck his shoulder with a dull thud, making him whip around in shock, pointing the gun at you.

your heart stopped. this was it.

but seonghwa worked fast.

grabbing the fork, he lunged forward with all the strength he had, driving it into the gunmanโ€™s neck.

the man stumbled, choking as he clawed at his throat, slumping to the ground.

seonghwa collapsed to his knees, panting heavily as the fork clattered from his hand to the pavement. blood dripped from his fingertips, pooling around him as he pressed a hand to his side, trying to stop his wound from bleeding.

โ€œ...thank you,โ€ he managed to say, his voice hoarse.

you stared at him, your chest heaving. you stepped closer, looking down at his bloodied state. โ€œdamn it.โ€

seonghwa glanced up at you, his eyes filled withโ€ฆ gratitude? sincerity? relief? or was that desperation?

you sighed, shaking your head. โ€œyouโ€™re lucky iโ€™m a nice person.โ€

โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜

โ€œiโ€™m sorry-โ€

โ€œdonโ€™t talk to me,โ€ you cut him off, shoving a cold can of soda into his hand.

you brought seonghwa to your office, the only place you could think of where he wouldnโ€™t be found - or bleed out. he sat in your coworkerโ€™s chair, guilt written all over his face.

with a heavy sigh, you sank into your own chair across from him, leaning back as you tried to catch your breath.

for what felt like an eternity, the two of you sat in silence, your eyes locked in an unspoken fight. dark red tissues piled up beside seonghwa as he pressed another one to the cut on his cheek, wincing.

you didnโ€™t want to feel sorry for him. you didnโ€™t want to care. but seeing him like this - injured, his clothes stained with the horrid look of blood, made it impossible to ignore the way your stomach twisted.

โ€œ...how did you end up like this?โ€

your words cracked, betraying the hurt and confusion you tried so so hard to bottle up.

โ€œi-โ€ began before stopping himself, his voice faltering. he pressed his lips into a thin line, looking away from you.ย

EARLIER THAT DAY

โ€œwha-? you canโ€™t say no, seonghwa,โ€ hongjoong snapped. โ€œthis is your job.โ€

seonghwa slouched deeper into the couch, arms crossed over his chest. his eyes followed his boss as he paced around the room. โ€œi donโ€™t want to go.โ€

โ€œโ€˜i donโ€™t want to goโ€™,โ€ hongjoong mocked, stopping mid-step to glare at him. โ€œiโ€™m not asking you to go, iโ€™m telling you.โ€

seonghwa stayed silent.

โ€œcome on,โ€ hoongjoong ran a hand through his hair. โ€œwe got a tip theyโ€™re loitering around these streets. the least you could do is check it out.โ€

โ€˜theyโ€™.

aka the drug cartel that had been bothering hongjoong and the group for months. even then, seonghwa shook his head, refusing his bossโ€™s orders.

hongjoong let out a frustrated sigh. โ€œyouโ€™ve been like this ever since you failed to kill that girl. youโ€™re depressed- go outside.โ€

seonghwaโ€™s head snapped up. โ€œiโ€™m not depressed,โ€ he glared.

โ€œright,โ€ hongjoong chuckled dryly. โ€œbecause moping and lazing around is normal behavior for you. wake up.โ€

seonghwa bit back a retort, his nails biting into his palms. he wasnโ€™t depressed. he wasnโ€™t.

was he?

a heavy silence settled over the room. sure, the last few weeks have been.. off. he hadnโ€™t been sleeping well. his appetite was nonexistent. and everytime he thought about you, he felt an ache in his heart that he couldnโ€™t quite shake.

it wasnโ€™t depression. it was just a.. slump.

he was not depressed.ย

seonghwa sighed, rolling his eyes. โ€œwhatever,โ€ he muttered finally. he pushed himself up. โ€œi better be paid good for this.โ€

PRESENT

seonghwa gulped, staring at the bruises on his arms. finally, he met your eyes, shifting uncomfortably. โ€œ...itโ€™s just my job.โ€

you crossed your arms. โ€œyour job?โ€

he said nothing.

โ€œseonghwa-โ€ you began, leaning forward. โ€œwhat kind of job leaves you looking like this?โ€

his shoulders stiffened, and for a moment - you thought he wouldnโ€™t answer. but then he sighed, wiping his bloody hands on his shirt.ย

โ€œif i tell you,โ€ he said. โ€œyou need to promise me something.โ€

you raised an eyebrow. โ€œpromise what?โ€

โ€œthat you wonโ€™t tell anyone.โ€

a dry laugh escaped your lips. โ€œiโ€™m not promising anything. spit it out.โ€

โ€œ...iโ€™m in a gang.โ€

โ€œwha-โ€ you stared at him, your face blank for a second before you let out a snort and cackle. โ€œyouโ€™re joking, right?โ€

but when he didnโ€™t laugh, you froze.

โ€œwait- youโ€™re not joking?โ€ you asked, your voice quieter.

he shook his head.

his words hit you like a wave. your mind spun, connecting the dots - the poison, his sketchy behaviour, the guilty look in his eyes - it all fell into place.

โ€œ...is that why you tried to kill me?โ€ you asked after a long pause. โ€œwhat did i do?โ€

โ€œthatโ€™s..โ€ seonghwa trailed off, looking away. โ€œunrelated.โ€

you rolled your eyes. โ€œof course it is.โ€

his face softened into something almost remorseful. โ€œi donโ€™t really know how to talk about this,โ€ he said. โ€œbut i know iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œyou didnโ€™t have to save me, but you did,โ€ he leaned forward. โ€œand i keep wondering why- because if it was the other way around, i donโ€™t think i wouldโ€™ve done the same.โ€

you raised your eyebrow.

โ€œiโ€™m sorry, really,โ€ he said, quieter now. โ€œi donโ€™t know what else i can say, but i just.. i donโ€™t want you to think iโ€™m taking any of it lightly.โ€

you stared at him, surprised by how sincere he was. โ€œseonghwa..โ€

โ€œi know an apology wonโ€™t fix anything,โ€ he said. โ€œbut iโ€™ll do whatever it takes to make it right.โ€

โ€œwhatever it takes?โ€ you asked, furrowing your brows.ย

he nodded quickly.

you scoffed, leaning in closer, your eyes piercing his. โ€œif you really mean that, prove it.โ€

โ€œi will,โ€™ he said immediately.

โ€œโ€ฆuhuh,โ€ you looked him up and down before standing, grabbing your bag. โ€œyou can start by cleaning the blood off of my coworkerโ€™s chair.โ€

he let out a faint chuckle, though it was more self-deprecating than anything. before you walked away, you paused, turning back to him.

โ€œseonghwa?โ€

โ€œyeah?โ€

you stepped closer, grabbing his collar and pulling him towards you. โ€œbefore you try anything stupid, remember this: i still have that poison of yours.โ€

MONTH 5 - WALK HIM LIKE A DOG

you had to admit - it was convenient having your own personal assistant, even if the circumstances wereโ€ฆ complicated.

it wasnโ€™t like you asked for this arrangement. seonghwa brought it upon himself, showing up whenever you called.ย

printer jammed? heโ€™d be there in ten minutes. out of pens? heโ€™d have a pack delivered to your desk. of course you didnโ€™t trust him with tasks involving your drinks or food, but even then - he made himself useful with other things.

over time, you got used to calling him for simple errands - and he never complained.ย

it was most definitely awkward though, especially when he tried to make small talk with you.

โ€œ..your hair looks nice,โ€ he said once as he stood by your desk.

โ€œthanks,โ€ you replied, not looking up from your screen.

a moment passed. you glanced over your shoulder, raising an eyebrow when you noticed he was still standing there. โ€œ...do you need something?โ€

he quickly shook his head, turning away as he muttered an apology.

youโ€™d be lying if you said you didnโ€™t find it amusing. as much as you hated to admit it, having him around wasnโ€™t unbearable.ย

as days turned into weeks, the distrust you held so tightly began to loosen its grip. it wasnโ€™t like you forgot what he did, there were just moments when he seemed normal.

โ€œyouโ€™re terrible at this,โ€ you smirked, watching him struggle to assemble the new office chair you ordered.

he looked up at you. โ€œi might be terrible, but at least i can read the instructions.โ€

you laughed.

but then youโ€™d remember.

youโ€™d remember the poison, the fact that this man tried to kill you for what seemed like no reason.ย

and everything goes back to square one.ย

MONTH 5.5 - T.G.I.F BY KATY PERRY

that friday, your coworkers insisted on dragging you out for a night at the club.

โ€œletโ€™s get wasted!โ€ they said. โ€œitโ€™ll be fun!โ€ they said.

that was probably a lie, but you gave in, changing your clothes before heading out.

neon lights shined erratically, painting the crowd in shifting shades of red, blue and green. bass-heavy music filled the club, so loud that it felt like waves went through your body. it was chaotic and packed to the brim with bodies swaying and stumbling.

itโ€™d only been ten minutes and you already lost sight of your coworkers in the sea of people.

โ€œshit,โ€ you muttered under your breath, trying to find the exit.ย

you pushed through drunk, clumsy dancers, finally spotting the door. but as you approached it, two towering men stepped infront of it, their shoulders forming an impenetrable wall.

โ€œwha-?โ€ you frowned, stopping. โ€œi canโ€™t leave?โ€

they didnโ€™t respond.

โ€œfine, whatever,โ€ you scoffed, rolling your eyes. if you were going to be stuck here, might as well grab a drink.

you made your way to the bar, squeezing between a group of rowdy patrons to get the bartenderโ€™s attention. but just as you opened your mouth to order, you heard a voice behind you.

โ€œhey, angel.โ€

you paused, glancing behind to see a man standing way too close. he was quite well-dressed, but an unsettling smirk settled on his face.

โ€œexcuse me?โ€ you raised an eyebrow.

โ€œcan i buy you a drink?โ€ he purred, leaning closer. โ€œi think iโ€™ll regret it if i donโ€™t.โ€

you blinked. โ€œno, itโ€™s okay-โ€œ

โ€œ-two shots of tequila,โ€ he called out to the bartender, cutting you off.ย

you stared at him, barely processing his words before a shot glass was placed infront of you, the clear liquid weirdly fizzing.ย

โ€œthank you, but i donโ€™t-โ€œ

โ€œdrink.โ€

before you could react, his hand was at the back of your head, tilting it back as he pressed the shot glass to your lips. the liquid burned as it slid down your throat - making you cough violently while the heat seared your chest.ย

โ€œwha- what is happening?โ€ you mumbled. your limbs felt heavy and your head was spinning as your vision blurred.ย

the manโ€™s smirk deepened, his face inches from yours as he gripped your wrist. โ€œlet me ask you something, angel.โ€

you blinked, your thoughts sluggish and messy.

โ€œwhat do you know about a man named park seonghwa?โ€

the name hit you in the face, your breath hitching. โ€œi-โ€

his grip on your wrist tightened painfully. โ€œanswer.โ€

โ€œheโ€™s just a baker,โ€ you said quickly.

the man chuckled darkly, the sound sending a chill down your spine. โ€œare you sure?โ€

you nodded, unable to form a response.

he leaned closer, his breath hot against your ear. โ€œthen why did he poison my boss a few months ago?โ€

poison.ย

that stupid stupid word haunting you again.ย

the man laughed again, low and ominous. โ€œyou had a reaction there- you know something i donโ€™t?โ€

you shook your head weakly, the motion making your dizziness worse. your knees buckled slightly, making you grip the edge of the sticky counter to steady yourself.

suddenly, the manโ€™s phone buzzed in his pocket. he pulled it out, still holding you firmly in place.

โ€œyeah,โ€ he said after a moment. โ€œi got his girlfriend right here.โ€

your eyes widened. โ€œiโ€™m not his girlfri-โ€

before you could finish, his hand clamped over your mouth, muffling your words.

โ€œsleep,โ€ he whispered, your world fading to black.

โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜

seonghwa laid in bed, staring at the ceiling where his fan spun. with a sigh, he shifted under the covers, letting sleep take over him.

but just as he closed his eyes, his phone buzzed on the nightstand. his brows furrowed as he reached for it.

he swiped to answer it, not looking at the screen. โ€œyes?โ€

โ€œhey seonghwa,โ€ a low, gruff voice was heard on the other end.

instantly, he was wide awake, sitting upright in the bed. his grip on the phone tightened. โ€œ...who is this?โ€

the voice chuckled. โ€œi got your pretty little girlfriend right here- knocked out like a light.โ€

seonghwa paused. โ€œ...girlfriend?โ€

โ€œyeah,โ€ the man replied. โ€œthe chick youโ€™re always hanging around. surprised you werenโ€™t with her, thought iโ€™d have to put up a fight.โ€

seonghwaโ€™s blood turned cold as the realisation hit.

you.

he didnโ€™t waste another second. he hung up immediately, throwing off the covers as he leapt out of bed, grabbing his jacket.

his footsteps echoed through the hideout as he stormed toward jonghoโ€™s room. he barged through the door without knocking, startling jongho who was hunched over his gaming setup.

jongho spun around in his chair. โ€œwhat the hell-?โ€

โ€œtrace this number. now,โ€ seonghwa shoved the phone into jonghoโ€™s hands.

jongho blinked. โ€œiโ€™m in the middle of a game.โ€

โ€œi donโ€™t care.โ€

jongho groaned, taking his headset off as he tapped the phone screen. โ€œfine.โ€

seonghwa paced around the room like a caged animal - his fists clenching and unclenching as he tried to calm himself down. if theyโ€™d taken you, it was most definitely his fault.ย

โ€œgot it,โ€ jongho said after a while, typing something into his laptop. โ€œyou want me to track the phone too?โ€

โ€œyes-โ€ seonghwa snapped. โ€œhurry.โ€

jongho glanced up at him, his brows furrowed. โ€œwhatโ€™s going on?โ€

โ€œsomeone has her,โ€ seonghwa muttered.

jonghoโ€™s eyes widened slightly, his fingers flying over the keyboard. โ€œi thought you were over her?โ€

โ€œwha- no,โ€ seonghwa glared at him. โ€œjust find her.โ€

โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜

you slowly woke up, your head throbbing. your first attempt to open your eyes was met with darkness. no - something pressed against your face. a blindfold.ย

your body felt stiff, the coarse bite of rope digging into your wrists and ankles. inhaling shakily, you realised something else: your mouth was muffled by a towel, trapping your cries before they could escape.

panic ran around your mind as you tried to make sense of your surroundings. the surface beneath you swayed gently - and you could hear the occasional creak of metal together with muffled voices. a vehicle. you were in a moving vehicle.

but out of nowhere, you heard a shout.

โ€œshit!โ€

the vehicle swerved violently, the tires screeching against the asphalt with a sound sharp enough to make you wince. your body jerked with the motion, the restraints keeping you in place. tears spilled beneath your blindfold, your breaths shallow and rapid against the towel.

the screeching came to an abrupt stop, followed by the jarring slam of a door.

what came next was a symphony of screams and the sickening, wet sounds of a blade piercing flesh, bodies hitting the ground. you clenched your fists, trembling.

the next door opened.ย

another scream.ย

another stab.

then silence.

your chest heaved, your heart pounding so loudly it drowned out everything else. was this it? were you next?

then your blindfold slipped away.

your eyes fluttered open, the tears caught in your lashes making your eyelids feel heavy. when your vision eventually cleared, the first thing you saw was him.

seonghwa. his face splattered with blood, his dark eyes wide as he searched yours. his chest rose and fell as he tried to catch his breath.

โ€œare you okay?โ€ he asked, removing the towel from your mouth.

tears spilled down your cheeks faster now, your emotions overwhelming you in a way youโ€™ve never felt before.

seonghwaโ€™s face softened as he wiped your tears with his thumb, the blood on his hands smearing across your skin.

he moved to the ropes binding your wrists and ankles, his hands working quickly.ย

โ€œiโ€™m sorry,โ€ he said softly. โ€œiโ€™m so sorry- shit. i shouldโ€™ve stayed away from you.โ€

the moment you were free, you threw your arms around him. he stiffened at first, caught off guard, but then his hands moved to your back.

your body shook against his as you cried. over his shoulder, you saw the man at the bar - his lifeless body crumpled on the ground, stab wounds dotting him.

โ€œiโ€™m so sorry,โ€ seonghwa whispered again, his hand rubbing slow circles on your back. โ€œthis is all my fault.โ€

you pulled back slightly, your face still wet with tears. his hands stayed on your shoulders. โ€œdid they hurt you?โ€ he asked softly.

you shook your head.

the vehicle fell into a heavy silence, the only sounds being your sniffling.

seonghwa gulped. โ€œiโ€™m sorry-โ€

โ€œ-thank you,โ€ you said at the same time.

both of you froze, your words overlapping.

you chuckled, tears still clinging to your lashes.

โ€œiโ€™m really sorry,โ€ he said once more, his voice cracking.

you studied him for a moment, taking in his disheveled hair, the blood on his skin and the exhaustion in his eyes.ย

โ€œ...were you sleeping?โ€ you asked, noticing the pajama shirt peeking out from under his jacket.

โ€œyeah, i was about to.โ€

your eyes widened. โ€œyou saved me even though you were about to sleep?โ€

he raised an eyebrow. โ€œwas i not supposed to?โ€ย

you stared at him, stunned. โ€œ...thank you.โ€

MONTH 6 - JUST DO IT

youโ€™ve been staring at the text for hours, the words glowing on your phone screen.

letโ€™s meet up.

seonghwa sent it to you that morning. no follow-up, no explanation, just those three words. and yet, they felt more heavy than you could even imagine.

what could you even say?

you tried to distract yourself, grabbing your laptop and scrolling through social media, but nothing held your attention for more than a second. your mind kept drifting back to the message.

your phone buzzed, the screen lighting up with another notification. not him. but you couldnโ€™t stop yourself from looking at the text again.

letโ€™s meet up.

โ€˜he saved you-โ€™ you reminded yourself. โ€˜-but he also tried to kill you.โ€™

it shouldโ€™ve been simple. black and white. a clear boundary between trust and mistrust. but nothing about seonghwa was simple.

when you thought about him, the first thing that came to mind wasnโ€™t the poison or the lies.ย

it was his hands, trembling as he untied you.ย

it was his voice, breaking with regret as he apologised.ย

it was the way he looked at you, like he didnโ€™t deserve your forgiveness but was desperate for it anyway.

you hated it.

you hated that he saved you. hated how jumbled your feelings were.

and most of all, you hated how much time you spent thinking about him and his stupidly flawless face.ย

you groaned, tossing your phone onto the couch. โ€œthis is ridiculous.โ€

this wasnโ€™t what you needed right now. you grabbed your bag and went out the door. maybe grocery shopping would clear your head.

โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜

the store was crowded, filled with after-work shoppers. you walked aimlessly, picking up a few essentials here and there, but your mind was still on that text.

you stopped at the fridges, grabbing a drink. but as you turned to place it in your basket, you collided with someone. โ€œwatch it-โ€ you began.

your words fell short when you realised you bumped into seonghwa, his phone in one hand and an awkward expression on his face. his eyes widened - and for a moment, neither of you spoke.

โ€œhey,โ€ he said finally.

you blinked, letting out a nervous chuckle. โ€œhey,โ€ you raised your free hand in a small wave.

โ€œ...can we talk?โ€

you nodded slowly. โ€œyeah,โ€ you put your drink into your basket. โ€œwhatโ€™s up?โ€

seonghwa glanced around, looking at the other shoppers nearby. โ€œmaybe not here.โ€

you nodded, heading to the checkout line without another word.

โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜โซ˜

you sat beside seonghwa on a wooden bench, your grocery bag resting at your feet. the both of you settled down in a park, a quieter and less busy place where you could actually breathe.

you reached for your drink, opening it. โ€œthirsty?โ€ you asked, holding it out to him.

he shook his head.

โ€œi didnโ€™t poison it,โ€ you smirked.

seonghwa gave you a look, his ears turning pink. โ€œyou know i feel bad about that,โ€ he muttered.

you chuckled softly, taking a sip. โ€œsorry, sorry,โ€ you said, turning to face him fully. โ€œwhat did you want to talk about?โ€

he paused, hesitating as he fiddled with the edge of his jacket. โ€œi just wanted to apologise,โ€ he said finally.

you sighed setting the drink aside. โ€œseonghwa- this is the hundredth time youโ€™ve said that.โ€

โ€œi know but-โ€

โ€œi forgive you,โ€ you said, your mouth moving faster than your mind.

his head snapped up, his eyes wide with disbelief. โ€œwhat?โ€

โ€œi forgive you,โ€ you repeated, more confidently this time.

โ€œ...really?โ€ he asked, completely shocked.

โ€œyeah,โ€ you shrugged. โ€œyou saved me. and itโ€™s not like i can stay mad at you forever.โ€

seonghwa blinked. โ€œyou definitely can,โ€ he said. โ€œi wouldnโ€™t blame you for it.โ€

silence fell between you, heavy but not uncomfortable.ย

his fingers brushed against yours accidentally - and he instantly pulled his hand back, his face turning a shade of red. โ€œoh my god- iโ€™m so sorry-โ€

โ€œseonghwa,โ€ you interrupted, reaching for his hand and holding it gently - his fingers slightly calloused. โ€œstop apologising.โ€

โ€œi canโ€™t help it,โ€ he admitted quietly.

everything seemed to come to a standstill.

the distant sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling faded into the background. your eyes locked, time pausing.

neither of you spoke.

slowly, almost unconsciously, you both leaned closer. the faint warmth of his breath brushed against your lips, uneven and nervous, mirroring your own.

you blinked, your breath caught in your throat when you realised just how close his face was to yours. โ€œwoah..โ€ you whispered.

seonghwa immediately leaned back, clearing his throat. โ€œsorry-โ€

before he could retreat any further, you reached out instinctively, your fingers curling around his jaw - his skin hot under your touch. โ€œstop saying that,โ€ you mumbled, your thumb brushing lightly against his cheek.

he froze, his eyes searching yours for something - permission, reassurance or maybe a blend of both.

you saw how he looked down at your lips for a split second, his adamโ€™s apple bobbing. โ€œ...is this okay?โ€ seonghwa breathed out shakily.ย

you smiled softly, your thumb tracing slow circles on his jaw. โ€œof course.โ€

the moment his lips pressed against yours, the world disappeared.ย

his shoulders relaxed as he leaned into you, his hand rising to cup your cheek. his touch was careful, as if he was afraid of hurting you in some way.

your lips moved together in a soft, slow rhythm, the warmth of him spreading through you like a comforting fire.ย

the sensation was intoxicating - and you found yourselves melting into each otherโ€™s touch.ย

seonghwaโ€™s breath hitched as he tilted his head slightly, deepening the kiss. his heart pounded against yours, a blush creeping up his neck, leaving him lightheaded.

when you finally pulled back, your lips were tingling. and before you could say anything, seonghwa leaned forward again, leaving a trail of kisses along your jawline.

โ€œhey!โ€

a voice broke the moment like a needle popping a balloon. both of you jumped, your heads snapping toward the sound.

a parent stood not too far away, their hands clamped over their childโ€™s eyes. โ€œplease do this at home or something,โ€ they said, glaring at the two of you before walking away quickly.

you and seonghwa exchanged a look, your cheeks flushing as you tried to stifle your laughter.

โ€œyeah,โ€ he said, looking into your eyes, then at your lips. โ€œletโ€™s do this somewhere else.โ€

BONUS SCENE - CUE THE MARIACHI BAND

you stirred awake to the faint aroma of something tasty wafting through the air. groggily, you rubbed your eyes open, only to find seonghwa standing by the bed, a tray in his hands.

โ€œhappy anniversary,โ€ he said softly, his lips curving into a smile.

you pushed yourself up on the pillows, your eyes wide with surprise as you took in the tray - a plate of freshly baked bread and scrambled eggs.

โ€œthank you..โ€ you mumbled, half-asleep but touched by the gesture.

seonghwa stepped closer, carefully placing the tray on your lap. he leaned down to press a kiss to your forehead. โ€œeat quickly,โ€ he said with a hint of excitement. โ€œi got you something.โ€

you raised an eyebrow. โ€œi thought we said no gifts this year.โ€

he shrugged, smirking. โ€œi lied.โ€

you rolled your eyes, though you couldnโ€™t stop a smile from forming on your lips. you grabbed a piece of bread and started eating. it was perfect, just like everything he made.

when you were finished, you slid out of bed, wrapping your cardigan tighter around yourself. you walked to where seonghwa was, sitting next to him.

โ€œseonghwa,โ€ you began. โ€œwe agreed- no gifts.โ€

โ€œi know,โ€ he said, reaching for something on the coffee table. โ€œbut i changed my mind.โ€

your eyes landed on the envelope in his hands. you stared at it as he handed it to you, your brows furrowing slightly. โ€œwhatโ€™s this?โ€ you asked, taking it hesitantly.

โ€œopen it.โ€

sliding your finger under the seal, you pulled out a letter. as your eyes skimmed the words, your jaw dropped.

โ€œ...is this-?โ€

โ€œyeah.โ€

โ€œyou paid for my school?!โ€ you exclaimed in disbelief.

he nodded. โ€œyou wanted to be an architect, right?โ€

โ€œi do but..โ€ you looked at him in shock, the letter trembling in your hands. โ€œisnโ€™t it expensive?โ€

โ€œso?โ€ he leaned closer to you, pulling you gently towards him.

your lips parted, trying to form words. โ€œbut you paid in full-โ€

โ€œit doesnโ€™t matter,โ€ he cut you off softly, pecking your cheek. โ€œi wanted to do it. for you.โ€

you searched his eyes, completely stunned. he leaned in, his lips brushing against yours in a tender kiss.ย

when you eventually pulled away, he didnโ€™t let you go fully. instead, he smiled, brushing a strand of hair away from your face before pressing a gentle kiss to your temple. โ€œhappy anniversary.โ€

| ๐’ฎ๐‘’๐“๐’ป๐’พ๐“ˆ๐’ฝ ๐ฟ๐‘œ๐“‹๐‘’ | Chapter One

โ€œDad, please, this is all I have left!โ€ Y/Nโ€™s dad didnโ€™t care, he snatched the few bills she clenched in her palms, then shoved her to the floor.

โ€œI donโ€™t care. I need it more, you brat.โ€

Her father left her on the cold hard floor without another thought as he exited her home.

This all started five years ago, when her mother died and her father became a huge gambling addict. Every bit of death insurance money that was left for their daughter was stolen by the father for excessive spending.

Whatever, his ass can forget it.

Y/N had to return to work if she wanted to keep her home, rent and bills were definitely no joke. With a sigh and groan, she grabbed her apron and hat. As much as she hated her customers, she had a good job. It paid well and gave her a nice home: small, but nice. The best part is that itโ€™s away from her fathers run down house.

Oh the family home..it used to be so beautiful. Y/Nโ€™s mother always kept it so extravagant and beautiful, her father actually built it for her mother. Alas, once she died, Y/Nโ€™s dad let it fall into disrepair. Holes in the floor, broken windows, no working appliances. It truly was just, not hospitable in any way shape or form.

The walk to the car was miserable, with her pockets robbed of the last cash she had, her bank account stripped clean of its currency. Y/N hated her father in these final minutes to her car, โ€œPiece of shit, hate his ass.โ€

Her car struggled to start, pissing her off even more. Her hands smacked against the steering wheel and she let out an agonizing scream. Tears streamed down her face that signified her further frustration. Why? Why not was her life like this? Y/N stepped out of her car with a slam of the door. Bus transposition it is. She could only count on the money she made tonight to make it back home. Her bus card only had enough for one ride.

Y/N grabbed her coat before heading back outside to the bus station, it better not be packed. Her day was already shitty and she didnโ€™t need to be jostled around by people on the way to work.

The moment she stepped onto the bus and scanned her card, only then could she breathe a sigh of relief. There was no one on the bus which gave her momentary tranquility. A peaceful silence if you must.

After the jostling bus ride and arriving to work, Y/N prepared for a long day ahead of her. Hopefully having no shitty customers and ending the day with a good pay.

She needs it.

About six hours later, she was clocked out of work with some cash in her pocket, she had made about one hundred and twenty four dollars. It wasnโ€™t much, but it was enough to get her home and maybe something ordered to eat. Tomorrow's payment would have to go to rent no matter what. She absolutely cannot afford to be homeless.

It had turned dark outside on the way home which she didnโ€™t mind but alas, men. She never had to worry about that but she still worried regardless.

With her home in sight, she let out another sigh of relief and stepped inside. Why was it so dark? She knows she left the lights on. She was sure she left them on. Y/N was about to bolt when hands grabbed her and the lights turned on.

Three men resided in her home entrance and she panicked, โ€œWho the hell are you people and why are you in my home?โ€ She tried her hardest to break away from the manโ€™s hold, she couldnโ€™t see what they looked like and that scared her.

A short one with orange hair pushed himself off the couch with a frown, โ€œYouโ€™re not Mark..โ€ His face grew cold, โ€œMight I ask who you are instead?โ€

Y/N could only scowl before giving in, โ€œIโ€™m his daughter. What do you want with my father?โ€

โ€œWell, you see, he owes us a hefty bit of money. He listed this place as his home but heโ€™s not here. Do you know where he is?โ€ He came face to face with the girl as he scanned her body up and down. Quite the specimen indeed, he thought.

Y/N shook her head, โ€œWhy the hell would I know where that deadbeat is? Heโ€™s nothing but trouble and continues to steal my money.โ€

This made the man laugh, the others stiffening.

โ€œOh, yeah, sounds just like him.โ€ He thought for a moment before nodding to himself, โ€œWell, guess weโ€™re gonna have to take you instead! Maybe we can lure him out with you.โ€

Before she could protest and scream for help, something was bashed against her head and she fell to the floor in a blackout.

Time flew by quickly.

The moment she woke up, she realized she was in a cell, her body wrapped in a tight rope and her legs barred together tightly.

Y/N began to cry, of course her father would get her in this situation. What a dickweed.

A light quickly flashed into the dark room, someone stepped in.

โ€œOh, good. Youโ€™re awake.โ€ The voice was monotone, โ€œCaptain wants to see you.โ€ The sounds of keys jingling rattled her ears, swearing she had a concussion.

She was quickly yanked up and taken outside of the cell, โ€œDo not attempt to flee, I will just shove you back in there with nothing to eat.โ€

Y/N gave in and let him take her upstairs. She was astonished by his beauty once they reached the light. No, no, do not think that way, she thought to herself. She was kidnapped.

She was taken to a room that was secluded from the rest, chandeliers lining the hallway as she walked, well, was forced down. Still, a beautiful place that astonished her.

Once she was shoved into the room and the door slammed behind her, only then could she look up from where she fell.

The other man stood up from his seat and helped her stand up, โ€œI told you to be gentle, Jongho. Follow my orders next time or you know damn well what happens.โ€

โ€œYes, Hongjoong, sir, Iโ€™m sorry.โ€ The voice spoke from behind the girl.

This guy was the boss?

โ€œIโ€™m Hongjoong, Iโ€™m the leader of ateez and youโ€™re in our home. You can thank your father for that.โ€ Hongjoong gently brought Y/N to a seat and sat her down, sending shivers down her spine.

โ€œWhat do I have to do with my father? Heโ€™s not going to rescue me. He only cares about his money.โ€ He didnโ€™t like those words but quickly gathered his cool.

โ€œNo matter, fathers always come back if they want to escape our wrath.โ€ Hongjoong cleared his throat before he stood up once more, โ€œYouโ€™ll be staying with us until he makes an appearance or pays us back.โ€

She knew neither was going to happen. Sheโ€™d be stuck here forever until the day she died.

Tears lined her eyes as she tried to fight them back, โ€œThen you should just kill me.โ€

Hongjoong laughed in such a maniacal way that it scared Y/N, โ€œI wonโ€™t be doing that either, youโ€™re too pretty to kill. I like you.โ€ He wasnโ€™t sending any red flags but still, he scared Y/N.

โ€œFine.โ€

โ€œGood girl. Jongho, take her to the room I had prepared and have the maids clean her up and feed her.โ€ With a wave of his hand, Y/N was back to being yanked around, โ€œBe gentle, dammit!โ€ His fist smacked against the desk and Jongho was frightened once more, being more careful than he had before.

When the two of them were out of sight, Jongho was harsh once again, โ€œI donโ€™t like you. I donโ€™t see why Captain has such an interest in you, I wouldโ€™ve just killed you if I was in his position.โ€

Y/N couldnโ€™t say anything, she was too scared, too afraid to die in all honesty. She could only wonder what would happen to her home, her job, everything she had. Would she just be reported as missing? What would happen? Would anyone even care?

โ€œYouโ€™ll be staying in here.โ€ She was shoved into a room once again but maids rushed to her this time, helping her to the bed, almost as if they were also afraid of Hongjoong.

She didnโ€™t blame them.

Y/N didnโ€™t even fight back, she let them undress her, too hollow of shell at the moment. They led her to a prepared bath, it was..big. Too big.

They helped her inside and began washing her body before she shouted, โ€œI can do it myself, thank you.โ€ The maids didnโ€™t scamper off unfortunately.

โ€œWeโ€™re so sorry, but Mr Kim wants us doing this. We have to.โ€ They spoke with such a frightening tone, almost as if they were gonna get their heads chopped off on a stand.

They scrubbed her body with such ease and care, not wanting to hurt the girl. Too scared to do so. Then again, they havenโ€™t had another girl in the house in so long. It was nice.

Once they were done, they had her step out, drying and dressing her in a gown. Something she normally would never wear, alas she has no choice unfortunately. If this is what the man wanted her to wear then so be it.

The several maids took their leave for a moment and Y/N took that as her chance to escape. She bolted out of the bathroom, out of the room, then into the hallway. Her heavy breaths carried her in a panic, but what she didnโ€™t expect was to run in a hard chest.

Y/N screamed in defeat as they grabbed her tight. She recognized the hold as the person who captured her home.

โ€œJust where do you think youโ€™re going?โ€ The voice snickered in such a mimicking tone, โ€œMm, captain is gonna love to hear about this.โ€

Y/N stared up into his eyes, yet another beautiful man and this one was definitely tall.

โ€œYou do look delicious.โ€ However, he shrugged and dragged her back into the room, โ€œIโ€™m Mingi, though, next time you try to escape, I wonโ€™t be so lenient.โ€ The door was slammed as Mingi left her in the cold and dark room once more.

Y/N could only cry as she came to the conclusion she was never leaving this place.

Ever.

So, this is what you meant when you said their powers are going to be explained next chapter. Now Iโ€™m assuming itโ€™s only ateez that has powers unless somehow other groups have them.

This definitely is a twist I wasnโ€™t expecting iโ€™m very excited to see what happens. <3

500 years ago, Kim Hongjoong stumbled upon a dirty and old shrine. Bruised, bloody, and broken.

He begged the silent deity for help, tears cascading down his nearly broken jaw. A miracle he could still talk. His broken fingers dropped all of the coins he had to offer onto the shrine. He continued to beg for help and prayed to the God but he got no answer.

His body could no longer sustain his energy and he collapsed onto the wet ground. Hongjoong knew this was the end and he didnโ€™t want to die like this.

Hongjoong let out one more scream before the light faded and he passed out from his injuries. No longer able to stay present.

To die for loving the wrong person. He would never change it, even if this was his death.

The deity appeared out of thin air and stared down at the almost corpse on his sacred ground. He couldnโ€™t help but shake his head.

โ€œHumans and their violence. Wake up, boy. I will not have you die on my holy shrine.โ€ The deity pressed two fingers to Hongjoongโ€™s head and he awoke with a gasp for air.

โ€œYou..Thank you.โ€ Hongjoong tried to sit up but his ribs and other miscellaneous injuries screamed at him to stop. How he is still alive is baffling. The deity thought of him as a fighter for surviving this long with the extent of his injuries.

โ€œWhy have you come to my shrine, why do you seek my help, human?โ€

โ€œBecause I donโ€™t want to die. I need to live for Seonghwa, but his family wonโ€™t let me see him anymore. Theyโ€™re the reason Iโ€™m like this. They tried to kill me but I got away.โ€ Hongjoong was able to sit up with the help of the deity, who only frowned at his words.

โ€œLove? Thatโ€™s a strong reason to fight for your life.โ€ He admired that. A lot. He missed his love life.

โ€œDo you want revenge, human?โ€

โ€œWhat? I- I..yes. I do. I shouldnโ€™t be tortured or killed for loving another man.โ€ Hongjoong truly loves Park Seonghwa of the noble Park family. He hated Seonghwaโ€™s face and screams when he was getting the shit beaten from him.

Hongjoong hated the Park family for trying to kill him in front of his lover. He wanted them dead. He wanted to steal away Hwa and live in the mountains away from the rest of this cruel humanity.

โ€œVery well. I can feel your anger, human. I will grant you your revenge but it comes at a cost.โ€ The deity crossed his arms before speaking once again, โ€œYou must take my powers and my status. You will be a God instead. Only then Iโ€™ll finally be free of this torture of living forever.โ€

Hongjoong was confused, โ€œWait, youโ€™re willing just to give up everything? For me?โ€

โ€œBelieve it or not, I was once in love just like you. I was born a God, they were born a human. It was agony watching them die and Iโ€™m ready to be with them. But you must take it from me.โ€ The deity held out his hand, a glow emitting from it. It was so inviting.

Hongjoong furrowed his eyebrows before quickly grasping the deity's hand. A scream emitted from their longs as the power was transferred to Hongjoong.

Nothing else was said as the deity faded into nothing but dust.

Hongjoong could feel the power coursing within him. Each wound and broken bone was immediately healed and he felt a strange sense of longing. He knew it was for his lover down in the village. He could only hope he was still alive and not locked up in a cell by his family. Or worse, being forced to marry someone very fast.

Hongjoong didnโ€™t care. He was going to kill them alone and take Seonghwa away with him.

One quick flash and he was standing in front of the Park residence. The guards screamed at him and ran towards him to finish the job they tried to do earlier. They failed and were flung to opposite sides. Hongjoong made them disappear as if they never existed and marched his way in, blasting the doors open with just an open palm.

Screams were heard from inside. Good. They should be scared.

โ€œYou! How are you still alive!โ€ It was Seonghwaโ€™s father. No matter, he was swiped against a wall with a flick of a wrist.

โ€œPeasant.โ€ Hongjoong spat at the manโ€™s now broken body.

Seonghwaโ€™s mother screamed in absolute horror, โ€œGeo-โ€œ Dead. Hongjoong broke her spine with yet another gesture.

Seonghwaโ€™s older brother ran out to be by his dead parents and to fight Hongjoong. It was pointless. Hongjoong killed him too. Nothing was going to stop him from finding his lover.

โ€œSeonghwa?โ€ Hongjoong called out as he stepped over multiple corpses. He ripped his bloodied hanbok and threw the pieces to the ground, they were pointless.

He couldnโ€™t find Seonghwa anywhere. Fuck. They mustโ€™ve locked him up. That angered him much further. Hongjoong left the residence ablaze once he stepped out of the threshold. Villagers who saw the massacre stayed out of Hongjoongโ€™s way. Now terrified of the man.

A good choice.

The new deity made his way to the village's cells. Once he gets his man, this whole town will be gone. He wasnโ€™t going to leave anyone alive. Not after they all sat around and let Hongjoong and Seonghwa be separated.

With the cells in site, the guards were slaughtered and he burst open the gates, each criminal ran out of their cells in fear but Seonghwa remained. He knew his lover came back for him. He didnโ€™t care how.

Seonghwa was just happy Hongjoong was alive.

โ€œHongjoong!โ€ The noble ran out of his cell and into Hongjoongโ€™s arms, โ€œHow are you alive?โ€

His lover only laughed, โ€œIโ€™ll tell you later, for now we must leave this place. We donโ€™t belong here.โ€ Hongjoong kissed Seonghwa with such fever that he refused to separate for several moments.

They left the village hand in hand. Hongjoong didnโ€™t even bother to look back when he set everything ablaze, leaving nothing to save itself. He got his revenge and much more. Nothing was going to separate them ever again. Ever.

-

Kim Hongjoong and Park Seonghwa, both now immortals, faced the earth and its challenges together. They hid in the mountains away from the humans to maintain their happiness and peace. Hongjoong had gave Seonghwa powers to protect himself. Powers that matched their invisible tie to each other. He honed abilities from the planet. Elemental.

Seonghwa maintained a garden that he took care of with his new powers. The animals in the forest kept him company when Hongjoong had to leave to Deity Overworld, now that heโ€™s a god.

One day, Seonghwa heard a blood curdling scream and chanting coming down the mountain. Hongjoong was gone so that couldnโ€™t be him.

Seonghwa set down the white rabbit in his lap and marched down the hill, carefully treading.

Once he made it past the clearing, he found a big man strung up to a post, men and women surrounding it with torches. Seonghwa knew what it was immediately. A witch trial.

Humans are so cruel to anything different.

Just as they were about to light him aflame, Seonghwa cleared his throat, โ€œI suggest you let him down or there will be consequences. I donโ€™t take innocent bloodshed lightly.โ€

The people whipped their heads toward the newfound voice, โ€œExcuse me? How dare you threaten us. Are you a witch too?โ€ A man poked Seonghwaโ€™s chest with a pitchfork.

He didnโ€™t like that. Without moving, the ground swallows the man whole, โ€œAnyone want to go next?โ€

The humans screamed in fear and ran away, not wanting to die.

The man on the post had been crying, thankful to be saved. Why did he have to be scorned for practicing a non harmful craft?

โ€œItโ€™s okay, Iโ€™ve got you now.โ€ Seonghwa cut the ropes that held the man high, โ€œCareful.โ€ He caught him as he fell, โ€œWhatโ€™s your name? Iโ€™m Seonghwa.โ€ A beautiful smile stretched his cheeks as he kept the man warm.

โ€œYunho. Jeong Yunho. Thank you for saving me. Iโ€™m forever in your debt.โ€ Yunhoโ€™s large hands grasped Seonghwaโ€™s in desperation, โ€œI donโ€™t know how to even begin to thank you.โ€

Seonghwa shook his head, โ€œYou donโ€™t need to. What the humans are doing is harmful. You donโ€™t deserve to die, Yunho. Come with me. Iโ€™ve got somewhere to keep you safe.โ€

-

โ€œUm, Seonghwa, who is this?โ€ Hongjoong appeared from a mist into the living room, confusion smeared on his features.

Yunho jumped, nearly screaming in his spot, still jumpy from earlier.

โ€œHey, itโ€™s okay.โ€ Seonghwa was quick to comfort the big man, โ€œThis is Yunho, he was about to be burned at the stake for witchcraft..I just couldnโ€™t let that happen.โ€

Hongjoong melted at his words. One of the many reasons he fell for Seonghwa. His selflessness and care for others beside himself.

โ€œI see, well, make sure he has somewhere to stay warm and rest. Iโ€™m sure it was stressful.โ€ Hongjoong smiled and walked to his bedroom, exhausted from traveling between worlds.

Yunho smiled to himself and held the blanket close to his body, โ€œYou two are very kind. Thank you for the hospitality.โ€

โ€œSo, tell me, Yunho. Do you have anyone?โ€ Seonghwa carefully sat beside Yunho, caution on his features.

โ€œAh, no. I donโ€™t. Itโ€™s just me. I suppose thatโ€™s why it was so easy for me to be found by those villagers.โ€ He could never return to his home. Not if he wanted to live.

โ€œWell, I have a proposition for you then, Mr. Yunho, how would you like to live forever without having to worry about being burned alive?โ€ Seonghwa offered with such nonchalance.

Yunho was in shock. What was he saying?

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œLook, Hongjoong and I are immortal. Hongjoong is a god and he gave me immortality to be with him forever. I want to give you that now. I know you could use it for the good in your heart.โ€ The former noble was serious in every sense, โ€œOf course, Iโ€™d have to talk to Hongjoong but I want to give you that offer.โ€

โ€œI just thought you were also a witch honestly.โ€ Yunho laughed.

โ€œWell, no, but still.โ€ Seonghwa stood back up, โ€œIโ€™ll let you think about it but Iโ€™m going to go speak to Hongjoong about this.โ€

-

โ€œYouโ€™re an immortal now, how do you feel, Yunho?โ€ Seonghwa grinned, Hongjoongโ€™s arm around his waist.

The new immortal couldnโ€™t help but cry as fire emitted from his palms, โ€œI..Iโ€™m so happy.โ€ Of course the fire was a bonus. Now he could make everyone pay that tried to burn him alive.

โ€œBe careful with that ability, Yunho, I know what youโ€™re thinking. I can hear everything. If you do not tread my warnings carefully, I can take it all from you without breaking a sweat. So donโ€™t test me.โ€ Hongjoong was stern but he knew Yunho wouldnโ€™t break his trust. It was like he had a golden retriever that followed his every demand and order.

After all, this was just the beginning of a big tale to come.

โ€œI will, thank you, Hongjoong.โ€

The three men would continue to live in harmony for decades. In peace and tranquillity. They never had to worry about another human trying to kill them and Hongjoong helped Yunho and Seonghwa hone their abilities. He was going to shape them into beasts. A small army if you will.

Nothing was going to stop him from being who he was meant to be.

They lived their lives on a pirate ship that sailed the ocean, that Hongjoong had stolen, becoming the new feared pirate crew for years to come.

He had to grow this team and he had to use the abilities he was given.

Yunho made them a fourth member. A living doll but with a human body. His name is Kang Yeosang and heโ€™s another immortal. His abilities are unknown as heโ€™s still getting accustomed to being a living doll. Made from dark magic.

Again, this was only the beginning for this forming team.

Theyโ€™re only going to get stronger.

The staff stands in a rigid line in the grand hall of the Clarke mansion, their hands clasped in front of them, their gazes lowered but attentive.

The tension in the air is palpable, thick and unspoken. The echoes of last nightโ€™s violence still linger in the minds of every person standing there.

Dannโ€™s mother shifts uncomfortably beside her daughter, her fingers tightening around the hem of her apron.

Dann, for once, isnโ€™t fidgeting, isnโ€™t sneaking glances at her phone or zoning out. Sheโ€™s watching, truly watching, in a way she never has before.

Mike stands before them, dressed sharply as ever, exuding the effortless charm and authority that has always made people trust him despite the cruelty that lurks beneath.

His parents flank himโ€”his fatherโ€™s expression serious, his motherโ€™s carefully curated into something that resembles concern.

โ€œFirst of all,โ€ Mike begins, his voice smooth, practiced, โ€œI want to personally apologize for what you all witnessed days ago.โ€ He pauses, his eyes scanning the crowd as if searching for sincerity within himself.

โ€œMy behavior wasโ€ฆ unacceptable. I let my emotions get the best of me, and I regret that it happened in front of all of you.โ€

His mother nods approvingly beside him. His father remains impassive.

โ€œIt was a private family matter,โ€ He continues, โ€œAnd I assure you, YN and I have already spoken. She has forgiven me, and we are moving forward as a family.โ€

Dannโ€™s stomach twists.

Liar. He hasnโ€™t spoken to you. No one has.

โ€œShe understands, as I hope you all do, that moments of anger donโ€™t define us,โ€ Mike adds, his lips pressing into something that resembles a remorseful smile. โ€œIโ€™m not proud of how I acted, but I promise it will never happen again.โ€

Thereโ€™s silence. Heavy. Expectant.

The staff doesnโ€™t react, but they donโ€™t need toโ€”this isnโ€™t about them believing Mike. This is about them accepting what they are being told to believe.

His father steps forward now, clearing his throat โ€œWe deeply appreciate all the work you do for this household. Your loyalty does not go unnoticed, and we want to express our gratitude for your discretion regarding the incident.โ€

A butler steps in, carrying a sleek tray, and within seconds, small black boxes are placed into the hands of each staff member.

Dann stares at the one in her motherโ€™s hands.

Itโ€™s sickening. The Clarke familyโ€™s cycle of silence and bribery in its purest form.

Her mother hesitates, looking around nervously before murmuring, โ€œSir, this isnโ€™t necessaryโ€ฆโ€

Your mother offers a practiced smile โ€œOf course it is. You all work so hard, and we insist.โ€

Dannโ€™s mother swallows, clutching the box tightly. Around them, the other staff members murmur quiet thanks, some with forced smiles, others merely nodding, understanding there is no choice in this.

Dann glances up at Mike, who catches her staring. He smirks just slightly, eyes gleaming with something dangerous, something knowing.

And for the first time, the weight of what sheโ€™s been a part of settles like a stone in her stomach. She lowers her gaze before anyone sees the regret forming there.

Because itโ€™s too late for regrets now.

โœฎ โ‹†

Youโ€™re quieter than usual, but it isnโ€™t something peaceful. Itโ€™s the kind of silence that lingers after something terrible has happened, the kind that no one dares to break.

You sit on your soft bed, your body aching, the faint pressure of Mikeโ€™s hands still lingering on your throat. The dim lighting casts long shadows, and the scent of expensive perfume does little to soothe the heaviness in the air.

Your parents stand before you, poised as ever, their expressions carefully composedโ€”concern etched into their faces just enough to seem believable, but not enough to be real.

Your father speaks first, his voice low and measured โ€œDarling, what happenedโ€ฆ was unfortunate.โ€

Unfortunate.

Thatโ€™s the word they use when something inconvenient happens. When an investment fails, when a business deal doesnโ€™t go through, when their son nearly strangles their daughter in front of an entire household.

Your mother sighs, sitting beside you, reaching out to grab your hand โ€œYou know how Mike gets. He has always struggled with controlling his emotions.โ€

Your lips curl bitterly โ€œSo that makes it okay?โ€

Your father narrows his eyes slightly, but his tone remains calm โ€œNo one is saying that. But you must understand, people like us donโ€™t air our dirty laundry for the world to see. This is a family matter, and it must remain that way.โ€

You scoff, shifting in your bed despite the pain that flares up in your ribs โ€œSo you want me to pretend it didnโ€™t happen? To protect him?โ€

โ€œWe are protecting you, sweetie.โ€

You let out a short, humorless laugh โ€œRight. Because you care so much.โ€

Your mother sighs again, as if you are the one being difficult โ€œSweetheart, the world is cruel. You know that. Do you really want people gossiping about this? Do you want to ruin Mikeโ€™s future over a misunderstanding?โ€

Your fingers tighten around the fabric of the blankets โ€œMisunderstanding?โ€ Your voice is sharp, disbelief laced in every syllable. โ€œHe punched me. He choked me. In front of everyone. What exactly was misunderstood?โ€

Your fatherโ€™s expression darkens, the mask of concern slipping just a fraction.

โ€œLower your voice.โ€

You bite your tongue, swallowing down the fury bubbling inside you. Your mother smooths your hair back, her tone soothing yet distant.

โ€œSweetie, we know youโ€™re upset. But we also know that youโ€™re strong. This family needs you to be composed, to move forward. And Mikeโ€ฆ he regrets his actions.โ€

Your body goes rigid at the blatant lie. Mike never regrets anything.

Your father clears his throat, as if the conversation is now settled โ€œWe thought you might like this.โ€

A sleek black box is placed in your lap, the brand embossed in gold. Expensive. Extravagant.

Meaningless.

You don't even need to open it to know what it is.

Another gift.

Another bandage for wounds they refuse to acknowledge. you lift your gaze, meeting their expectant eyes. They wait for gratitude, for acceptance.

So you do. You smile, itโ€™s slow, and void of warmth.

โ€œThank you,โ€ You say, voice as smooth as silk, fingers brushing over the box as if you actually care.

They relax, satisfied. And in that moment, you make a silent vow.

You wonโ€™t forget. You wonโ€™t forgive.

And you sure as hell wonโ€™t let this go.

โœฎ โ‹† หš๏ฝก๐–ฆน โ‹†๏ฝกยฐโœฉ

During the week, Wooyoung hadnโ€™t a real plan when he walked into the cafรฉ, just the vague idea of seeing if the girl from the picture was really there.

The bell jingles softly as he steps inside, and he takes a casual glance around, pretending to look at the menu.

And then he sees them.

Little Hongjoong and that girl.

Hongjoong is sitting at one of the corner tables, wearing a simple work apron, speaking to the girl from the photo. She laughs at something he says before walking away to take another order.

Wooyoung narrows his eyes and strides over to Hongjoongโ€™s table, plopping into the chair across from him.

โ€œThe fuck are you doing here?โ€ Woo asks bluntly.

Hongjoong startled, then sighs when he realizes who it is โ€œWoo? What are youโ€”โ€

โ€œNo, no, donโ€™t โ€˜Wooโ€™ me,โ€ He cuts him off, crossing his arms โ€œWhy are you here? And why the fuck is there a picture of you hugging that girl going around?โ€

Hongjoong rubs the back of his neck, looking exhausted โ€œI work here, and what do you mean a picture of me is going around?โ€

Wooyoung blinks โ€œ...Excuse me?โ€

โ€œI work here,โ€ He repeats, voice quieter โ€œI didnโ€™t want anyone to know.โ€

Woo stares at him, then lets out a short, disbelieving laugh โ€œAre you kidding me? Youโ€™ve been acting weird as hell, blowing YN off, and it turns out youโ€™ve just beenโ€”what? Making lattes?โ€

Hongjoong exhales โ€œMy dad lost his job. I needed to help out. I didnโ€™t tell YN becauseโ€ฆ I didnโ€™t want her to think less of me.โ€

Wooyoung runs a hand down his face โ€œLittle Hongjoongโ€ฆ. Seriously?โ€

He avoids his gaze.

Shaking his head, Wooyoung pulls out his phone โ€œYeah, well, Iโ€™m telling her.โ€

Hongjoongโ€™s eyes widens โ€œWooyoung, donโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œToo late.โ€ Wooyoung hits send a quick message to you, then smirks โ€œShe deserves to know the truth. And you need to stop being a dumbass.โ€

He groans, slumping in his seat โ€œI hate you.โ€

Wooyoung just grins โ€œYou will love me after this, Joong.โ€

โœฎ โ‹†

The soft glow of the screen illuminates your face as you lay in bed, your thumb hovering over the keyboard.

It has been a long, exhausting weekโ€”one filled with endless frustration, whispered conspiracies between Mindy and Wooyoung, and the dull ache of bruises that still hadnโ€™t fully faded.

And then there, there is the message you were waiting for.

Brat Woo: Babydoll.

Brat Woo: False alarm, little Hongjoong is clean, and that slut works in that cafe, Hongjoong does too.

Bratty Woo: You should talk to him.

You have been fuming, pacing, and second-guessing yourself over and over.

But now, with Wooโ€™s confirmation that the girl in the picture is nothing more than a coworker and that Hongjoong has been working in secret, your anger has simmered down to something elseโ€”something more dangerous.

Doubt.

Had you misjudged him? Had you let your paranoia and pain push you into believing the worst?

But then again, why had he kept all of this from you? Why hadnโ€™t he shown up to your date? Why was he so distant after everything you had been through?

Taking a deep breath, you type Hongjoong a quick message.

YNโ™ก: We need to talk.

The message is sent instantly, and you don't have to wait long for Hongjoong to arrive at your home.

โœฎ โ‹†

Hongjoong stands at the front gates of your house, his heart hammering in his chest. The towering mansion, which once felt like an unattainable dream, now looms over him with an unfamiliar, suffocating presence.

The moment the gates open, he strides inside, his breath heavy with anticipation.

A maid opens the door, offering him a polite smile "Welcome, Miss YN is waiting for you in her room."

He barely nods before hurrying past her, his pulse quickening with every step. Itโ€™s been a weekโ€”a week without seeing you, without hearing your voice.

A week of torment, uncertainty, and the gnawing ache of missing you.

When he reaches your door, he hesitates for just a second before knocking "YNโ€ฆ itโ€™s me, Hongjoong."

A beat of silence. Then, a quiet but firm, โ€œCome in.โ€

He pushes the door open, and there you are.

Sitting at the edge of the bed, arms crossed, your gaze unreadable. But his eyes immediately drop to the bruisesโ€”faint marks on your throat, a cut on your lower lip, a fading bruise on your cheek.

His stomach twists.

"What happened to you, pretty?"

His voice is sharp with concern as he steps forward, instinctively reaching for you, but you tilt your chin up defiantly, stopping him in his tracks.

"Explain yourself first," You say coolly, eyes locking onto his "Depending on your answers, Iโ€™ll decide if I even want to keep listening to you."

He clenches his jaw, hands curling into fists at his sides "YNโ€”"

"No," You cut him off "You ignored me for weeks. You left me sitting alone at that restaurant like a fool. You ghosted me after we fucked. And thenโ€ฆ" You pull out your phone, swipe through it, and hold up the screen in his face "Seonghwa sent me this."

Hongjoong frowns at the imageโ€”a picture of him and Jina at the cafรฉ, her arms wrapped around him in what looks like an intimate moment. His brows furrow.

The fuck? Is this the picture Wooyoung mentioned?

"Waitโ€”what? When was this taken?"

You scoff, lowering your phone "So you donโ€™t even know."

"No, I donโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œSeonghwa sent it to me the same day as our date. Funny, huh?โ€ Your bitter laugh stings more than a slap "You ditched me for this slut? Really, Kim?"

Hongjoong exhales slowly, his mind racing to piece things together. And then it clicks.

That night. The last-minute call. The way time slipped through his fingers.

โ€œPretty, itโ€™s not what you think.โ€

You arch a brow in mock amusement โ€œNo?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ He says firmly, stepping closer, his voice steady despite the storm inside him โ€œLet me explain from the beginning.โ€

He sits beside you, carefully, as if afraid youโ€™ll push him away.

โ€œThat night, when weโ€ฆ When we slept together, I went home and found out my dad lost his job. Without his income, my family will struggle. So I did what I had to doโ€”I found a part-time job at a cafรฉ. Thatโ€™s why I kept telling you I was busy after school.โ€

You stare at him, your expression unreadable. Then, you scoff, shaking your head.

โ€œWhat a fucking joke.โ€ His stomach sinks โ€œSo, youโ€™re telling me that stupid rumor was false?โ€

โ€œCompletely.โ€

"And why didn't you tell me?" You snap, hitting his arm "I could have helped, and tell my parents to give your father a job or something! None of this drama would have happened!"

Hongjoong lets you hit him, knowing he deserves it "I know, but I didnโ€™t want to burden you. You already had enough going on with Mike."

โ€œYouโ€™re an idiot, Hongjoong! I thought the worst!โ€ Another smack lands on his arm, and he barely flinches.

"I didnโ€™t show up to our date because Jina called me at the last minute. She said it was something urgent, and it wouldnโ€™t take long. But when I finally checked the time, I realized you were already gone.โ€ He swallows hard โ€œI meant to explain. But I was a cowardโ€”I didnโ€™t know how.โ€

You study him, your gaze softening just a fraction โ€œAnd the picture?โ€

He exhales sharply, running a hand through his hair โ€œI donโ€™t know. But I swear, thereโ€™s nothing between me and Jina. Sheโ€™s just my coworker.โ€

Silence stretches between you, thick and suffocating. Then, Hongjoong reaches for your hand hesitantly, voice softening.

"Pretty, please believe me. I never wanted this to happen."

You let out a slow exhale, your shoulders slumping "Fine. But I still have a lot of questions."

Hongjoong nods, relief washing over him. Then, his gaze darkens as he looks at your bruises again. He gently cups your cheek, his thumb ghosting over the cut on your lip.

"Nowโ€ฆ tell me what happened to you."

You hesitate. Then, in a quiet voice, you tell him.

โ€œMike.โ€

He stiffens, his grip tightening ever so slightly โ€œMike? Why?โ€

You swallow, looking away "Itโ€™s not the first time. Heโ€™s always had a problem controlling his anger. Whenever we argued, or I did something he didnโ€™t like, he used to slap me. But this timeโ€ฆ it was different. Since he came back, heโ€™s been making my life hell, and I donโ€™t know why."

Hongjoong inhales sharply, his hands clenching into fists "Why didnโ€™t you tell me?" His voice is tight, laced with something darkโ€”rage, guilt, protectiveness.

"Because he scares me," You whisper. This is the first time you admit being scared of Mike.

You lookโ€ฆ small, fragile.

Broken.

Hongjoong doesnโ€™t think. He just moves. He pulls you into his arms, holding you close, pressing his chin to the top of your head.

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry, pretty,โ€ He murmurs, his heart aching at the quiet, shuddering breaths against his chest.

You stay like that for a long moment, wrapped in silence, until you speak again.

"Heโ€™s been acting weird. Like, he knows things that are private among my friends.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

You pull back slightly โ€œI don't know why, but he suddenly knew about you and our relationship, also the night I went to the club, someone sent Mike a video of me smoking.โ€

Hongjoong frowns โ€œSomeone recorded you?โ€

You nod โ€œBut only my close friends were there. Wooyoung and Mindy would never do something like that. That leaves Seonghwa, San, Mingi, and Samantha.โ€

He exhales sharply โ€œSeonghwa. It has to be him.โ€

โ€œBut we made a truce. Weโ€™ve been friends since we were kids.โ€

Hongjoong shakes his head โ€œI donโ€™t trust him, pretty.โ€

You hesitate, thinking โ€œBut even if he recorded itโ€ฆ how did Mike get it? They know each other because of our families, but theyโ€™re not close.โ€

Silence. Until one name suddenly clicks into place.

โ€œโ€ฆDann.โ€

Hongjoong frowns โ€œWhy her?โ€

You straighten, your mind racing โ€œMindy told me that Seonghwa talked with her at the party, something that is really rare. Also Dann gave you the wrong address, and maybeโ€”maybe she even started the rumor about us at school.โ€

The realization settles between you like a ticking bomb.

โ€œWe need to find out the truth.โ€

You nod, determination hardening your features โ€œWe do. Also, I can ask my dad If he has a job for your dad, I don't want you to work in that cafeteria with that bitch.โ€

Hongjoong chuckles โ€œFine, thank you, pretty.โ€

And with that, your heart feels more at ease knowing the truth, knowing that he is with you.

โœฎ โ‹† หš๏ฝก๐–ฆน โ‹†๏ฝกยฐโœฉ

It had been two weeks since the day Mike had left bruises on your skin, and the sick feeling of helplessness in your gut.

Itโ€™s been two weeks since you went to school, refusing to let everyone see you in that state.

As always, your parents refused to acknowledge the real issue.

You sit in your room, staring at the velvet box fanned out on your desk. Itโ€™s always the same cycle.

You would get hurt, and your parents would throw money at the problem, expecting you to accept it with gratitude.

Maybe you would have, once upon a time. But not anymore. Not after everything.

You arenโ€™t going to let them buy your silence this time. If they think a luxurious car would make you forget that their golden son had left marks on your skin, they are dead wrong.

If anything, this is the perfect opportunity.

Youโ€™re going to take their gift, but instead of numbing yourself in paradise, you would use it to take the first step in exposing Mike for what he really is.

Bringing him down from his pedestal isโ€™t going to be easy. Your parents are blind to his flaws, and the rest of the world worships him. But you have something they donโ€™t.

You have the truth, and you have Hanhah.

Your fingers brush against your phone as you pull up a text conversation. It 's one of many. Over these four years, you had kept in touch with Hannah, sending her money every month to help with the baby.

A baby that Mike had abandoned, a baby who would be turning four soon.

You scroll through the latest messages, lingering on a photo Hannah had sent a few days ago. A little girl with big, round eyes and wisps of dark hair smiled up at the camera, completely oblivious to the world she had been born into.

The sight of her made your chest tighten.

You can feel it in your bonesโ€”this is the way to finally shatter Mikeโ€™s perfect image. Your parents canโ€™t ignore this. They wouldnโ€™t be able to excuse him once they knew the truth.

But you need to be smart. If you are going to do this, you canโ€™t do it alone.

Thatโ€™s where Hongjoong, Mindy, and Wooyoung came in.

You grab your phone and fire off a quick message to the group chat you have with them.

YNโ™ก: Meet me at the cafe tonight. No excuses.

You know they would come. They always do. And once they are here, you would tell them everything.

And about Seonghwa and Dannโ€”because you have a feeling that whatever is going on with Mike, those two arenโ€™t far behind.

By the time it is over, you would make sure Mikeโ€™s untouchable image is nothing but dust.

โœฎ โ‹†

โ€œYou want to tell your parents about Hannah?โ€ Mindy finally says, her brows furrowed โ€œAre you sure about this, babe?โ€

โ€œI have to,โ€ You respond, voice steady โ€œI canโ€™t let him keep getting away with everything.โ€

Wooyoung lets out a low whistle โ€œAnd how exactly are you planning to do that? I mean, your parents are obsessed with Mike. Even if you show them proof, they might cover it up.โ€

You exhale sharply, already expecting this โ€œThatโ€™s why I need more than just the truthโ€”I need to make it so public they canโ€™t ignore it.โ€

Mindy tilts her head โ€œWhen are you planning to tell them?โ€

โ€œIf Seonghwa and Dann are involved in this, I need to deal with them firstโ€ฆ Then with Mike.โ€

โ€œYou really think theyโ€™re working with Mike?โ€ Wooyoung asks.

โ€œIt makes too much sense. Mike knew things he had no way of knowing. The video of me smoking, the rumors about Joong, the fake address Dann gave himโ€ฆ someone was feeding him information.โ€

Mindy taps a manicured finger against her knee โ€œSo whatโ€™s the plan?โ€

You lean forward โ€œFirst, Iโ€™ll talk to Hannah. Maybe ask her for a DNA test or something that will make my parents believe me.โ€ You meet Hongjoongโ€™s gaze โ€œYou will come with me.โ€

โ€œMe? I don't even know who she is.โ€

โ€œYou don't need to know her, I just need some support.โ€

He hesitates for a moment before nodding โ€œOkay.โ€

You then turn to Wooyoung and Mindy โ€œAs for you twoโ€ฆ I need you to say something false about me and Joong, make sure Seonghwa listens. Only like that can we know if Hwa and Dann are working with Mike.โ€

Woo grins, cracking his knuckles โ€œYou want dirt? Iโ€™ll get you dirt, babydoll.โ€

Mindy smirks โ€œOh, this is going to be fun.โ€

You lean back, exhaling. The plan is in motion. Now, all they have to do is execute it perfectly.

The night air is crisp as you step out of the cafรฉ, your mind already racing with what needs to be done next. The plan is fragileโ€”it has to be executed perfectly, or everything could backfire.

Hongjoong walks beside you, hands shoved into his jacket pockets, his gaze flickering toward you every few seconds.

โ€œAre you sure you want me there?โ€ He asks. โ€œI meanโ€ฆ Hannah might not even want to see me.โ€

You inhale deeply, steadying yourself โ€œShe wonโ€™t care about you, Joong. Sheโ€™ll care about what I have to say.โ€

He doesnโ€™t argue, but you can tell heโ€™s uneasy. Maybe itโ€™s because he still doesnโ€™t know everything.

โ€œWeโ€™re meeting her tomorrow,โ€ You continue. โ€œShe doesnโ€™t know why yet, but she agreed.โ€

He nods, but you can feel the tension radiating off of him. He wants to ask more. Maybe about this woman, maybe about what you have in mind.

But you donโ€™t give him the chance. Because right now, thereโ€™s something more pressing.

Wooyoung and Mindy walk a few steps ahead, already whispering between themselves, likely crafting the perfect lie to spread.

They need to bait Seonghwa. It has to be something goodโ€”something that hurts.

โ€œSo what should we say?โ€ Mindy asks, glancing back at you. โ€œSomething mild or something explosive?โ€

โ€œExplosive,โ€ You say without hesitation. โ€œSomething that makes me look weak. Hwa will eat it up.โ€

Wooyoung grins โ€œHow about we say that you and little Hongjoong broke up?โ€

Hongjoong tenses beside you. You glance at him but donโ€™t react โ€œNot enoughโ€ฆ We need something that will make Hwa really want Mike to know.โ€

Mindy taps her chin, pretending to think. โ€œHow about thisโ€”Hongjoong is using you to get popularity and status, you know about it but youโ€™re still with him, done.โ€

Hongjoong exhales sharply through his nose โ€œThatโ€™s messed up.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s perfect,โ€ You correct.

Mindy shrugs โ€œIf weโ€™re going to do this, we might as well make it believable.โ€

โ€œJust make sure Seonghwa hears it, and if you can, make sure to see if he interacts with Dann.โ€ You remind them. โ€œIf it gets back to Mike too quickly, he and Dann will be suspicious.โ€

Wooyoung throws an arm around Mindyโ€™s shoulders โ€œOh, donโ€™t worry, babydoll. By the time weโ€™re done, Seonghwa will be begging Dann to tell Mike.โ€

The four of you reach the parking lot, where your cars are waiting. For a moment, you let the night sink in, let the weight of what youโ€™re about to do settle on your shoulders.

This is it.

The first move.

Tomorrow, you will see Hannah.

Tomorrow, everything will change.

โœฎ โ‹† หš๏ฝก๐–ฆน โ‹†๏ฝกยฐโœฉ

The drive to Hannahโ€™s apartment is quiet.

Hongjoong grips the steering wheel, eyes flickering toward you every so often, but he doesnโ€™t speak.

You know he has questionsโ€”a lot of themโ€”but you arenโ€™t ready to answer.

Not yet.

The known streets fade the further you go, the streets narrowing, the polished luxury of your world giving way to something simpler, something real.

The buildings are smaller, older, stacked closely together. Thereโ€™s no security at the entrance, no valet, no extravagance. Just a plain apartment complex with rusted railings and dimly lit hallways.

Hongjoong pulls into a spot and cuts the engine. He exhales, rubbing a hand over your thigh.

โ€œAre you sure about this?โ€

You donโ€™t hesitate โ€œYes.โ€

He studies you for a moment, like heโ€™s trying to see past the walls youโ€™ve built. Then, with a slow nod, he pushes open his door.

Holding hands, you two walk towards the little building. The stairs creak beneath your heels as you ascend to the third floor. Apartment 3B.

You donโ€™t knock right away. Your fingers hover over the door for a second too long.

He notices โ€œPretty?โ€

Before you can second-guess yourself, you knock. A few moments later, the door swings open.

Hannah stands there, barefoot, dressed in simple lounge clothes. No makeup, no carefully styled hair, just Hana.

She blinks in surprise when she sees Hongjoong beside you, but her expression quickly hardens.

โ€œYou brought company,โ€ She says flatly.

You exhale โ€œCan we come in?โ€

Hannah hesitates. Then, without a word, she steps aside.

The apartment is small but warm. Lived in. A couch with a few toys scattered around, a tiny dining table with an open laptop, the faint scent of baby powder and vanilla lingering in the air.

And thenโ€”

โ€œAuntie!โ€

A small blur of motion comes rushing toward you. Tiny arms wrap around your legs, a little giggle filling the space.

Hongjoong freezes beside you.

You crouch down, smoothing a hand over the little girlโ€™s soft, dark curls โ€œHi, baby.โ€

She beams at you, big round eyes shining with pure joy โ€œDid you bring me a present?โ€

Your chest tightens โ€œIโ€™ll bring one next time, I promise.โ€

She giggles again, then turns her attention to Hongjoong, tilting her head curiously.

โ€œWhoโ€™s that?โ€

Joong is pale, not believing what he is seeing.

You stand, brushing imaginary dust from your clothes โ€œThis is my friend, Hongjoong.โ€

The little girl stares at him for a moment, โ€œDo you like cookies?โ€

He blinks โ€œUhโ€ฆ yeah?โ€

The little girl grins โ€œThen you can stay.โ€

And with that, she toddles off toward the couch, already forgetting about him.

Hanhah watches the whole exchange with guarded eyes โ€œYou didnโ€™t tell him, did you?โ€ She finally says.

Hongjoong shifts beside you, eyes darting between the two of you โ€œTell me what?โ€

You inhale sharply, turning to face him fully. โ€œJoongโ€ฆ this is Hanhahโ€™s daughter.โ€

His brows furrow โ€œOkayโ€ฆ?โ€

You swallow, your voice steady but heavy โ€œSheโ€™s Mikeโ€™s daughter.โ€

The words drop like a bomb in the small apartment.

Hongjoongโ€™s entire body goes stiff. His eyes widen, darting back to the little girl, who is now occupied with a stuffed bear on the couch. Slowly, like heโ€™s trying to piece together a puzzle that shouldnโ€™t exist, he turns back to you.

โ€œYN,โ€ He says carefully, voice lower now, โ€œWhat the hell are you talking about?โ€

You clench your jaw โ€œExactly what I said.โ€

Hannah crosses her arms, looking at him like sheโ€™s daring him to say something stupid.

โ€œYou didnโ€™t think Mike was actually perfect, did you?โ€

Hongjoong swallows hard, his Adamโ€™s apple bobbing โ€œHeโ€”he has a kid?โ€

โ€œWith me,โ€ Hanhah confirms. โ€œAnd he threatened to ruin my life if I ever told anyone.โ€

He shakes his head, running a hand through his hair โ€œJesus Christ, pretty.โ€

You shift closer to him, lowering your voice โ€œNow do you see why I need to do this?โ€

Joong exhales sharply, glancing at the little girl again. His expression shifts, something unreadable flickering across his face. And then, he nods.

โ€œIโ€™m in,โ€ He says. โ€œWhatever you need, Iโ€™m in.โ€

For the first time that night, you breathe a little easier.

Because this is just the beginning.

โœฎ โ‹†

The air feels heavy with unspoken words as you and Hongjoong sit at the small, worn-out table across from Hannah.

The little girl, still distracted by her stuffed bear, giggles every now and then, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing in the room.

Hongjoong, still processing, doesnโ€™t look at you, but he holds your hand in his. His eyes are fixed on the little girl, his mind likely racing with questions.

"Youโ€™re telling me Mike doesnโ€™t know sheโ€™s alive?" He asks, his voice barely above a whisper, the disbelief in it palpable.

Hannahโ€™s gaze darkens "No. He thinks I had an abortion. Thatโ€™s what he told me to do. He threatened me, said if I didnโ€™tโ€ฆ heโ€™d ruin my life. He was so sure of it. He made me believe it was the only option." Her voice cracks slightly, but she steadies herself.

โ€œBut I couldnโ€™t do it. I couldnโ€™t end her life just because Mike didnโ€™t want the world to know about her."

The words land like a punch, and Hongjoong recoils slightly, the reality of the situation sinking in.

"Thatโ€™s why youโ€™ve beenโ€”" He gestures vaguely toward her daughter, still oblivious to the weight of their conversation. "Youโ€™ve been keeping her a secret all these years?"

She nods, her face hardening as she looks down at her daughter "Iโ€™ve had to. For her safety. For my sanity. I couldn't risk Mike finding out she was alive. Not after everything he said." She pauses, her fingers brushing over the babyโ€™s small hand. โ€œIโ€™ve kept in contact with YN, becauseโ€ฆ because someone had to know the truth.โ€

You feel a pang of guilt in your chest, the weight of what youโ€™ve been hiding from everyoneโ€”the truth that no one, especially Mike, could ever learn.

Youโ€™ve helped her for years, sending money for the baby, but the lies have built walls between you and your family.

It was always supposed to stay secret. But now, you need to bring it all into the light. And you need to do it carefully.

You turn to Hongjoong, your voice low โ€œMike doesnโ€™t know sheโ€™s alive. And he canโ€™t. He will never find out, not from me. And Iโ€™ve never let anyone get close to herโ€ฆ until now.โ€

His eyes flicker with understanding, the pieces finally coming together "So... weโ€™re not just exposing Mikeโ€™s secrets, weโ€™re exposing his lies too."

You nod, the weight of the plan growing heavier โ€œExactly.โ€

Hannah sits in silence for a moment, as if weighing something in her mind.

โ€œI know this is going to be dangerous for all of us. Iโ€™ve lived in fear of Mike finding out. But I canโ€™t hide anymore. This girl deserves to know the truth.โ€

You exhale, your heart racing โ€œI wonโ€™t let him keep his image. Not anymore.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Hongjoong says finally, his voice steady. โ€œBut you know this is going to take more than just telling your parents, right? We need evidence. Something undeniable.โ€

You nod again โ€œThatโ€™s why we need a DNA test. Hannah, youโ€™re going to have to agree to it. Itโ€™s the only way we can prove it. If we can show them she is his, thereโ€™s no way theyโ€™ll be able to cover it up.โ€

She hesitates, you see the fear flash across her face โ€œIf I do this... will it be enough? Will your parents believe it?โ€

โ€œI hope so,โ€ You say firmly. โ€œAnd once they knowโ€”once we have that proofโ€”theyโ€™ll have no choice but to acknowledge him for who he really is. No more pretending.โ€

Hongjoong watches you for a beat, his eyes softening just slightly โ€œWeโ€™ll do this together. But we have to be careful. One wrong move and itโ€™s over.โ€

Hannah stands up, wiping her palms on her pants, clearly anxious but resolved.

โ€œOkay. Iโ€™ll do it. For her. For her future.โ€

The little girl looks up at the three of you, her big, innocent eyes wide.

โ€œAre we gonna tell Daddy soon?โ€

Your breath catches in your throat. The innocence in her voice makes everything feel so much heavier.

โ€œWeโ€™ll tell him when the time is right,โ€ You say, forcing a smile. โ€œWhen heโ€™s ready to hear it.โ€

โœฎ โ‹† หš๏ฝก๐–ฆน โ‹†๏ฝกยฐโœฉ

While you and Hongjoon talk with Hannah, Mindy and Wooyoung sit casually in the school cafeteria, their voices just loud enough to be overheard.

Woo, always the playful one, dramatically leans in closer to Mindy, whispering just loud enough for nearby ears to catch pieces of their conversation.

โ€œYou heard about Hongjoong, right?โ€ Wooyoung says, shaking his head with exaggerated concern. โ€œBabydollโ€™s been buying him stuff. Like, a lot of stuff.โ€

Mindy gasps, playing along โ€œNo way. So the rumors are true? Heโ€™s just using her?โ€

Woo sighs, rubbing his temples โ€œI donโ€™t want to believe it, but even YNโ€™s starting to realize it. She told me sheโ€™s thinking about ending things. Sheโ€™s just waiting for the right moment.โ€

Seonghwa, sitting at a nearby table with other students, doesnโ€™t react outwardly, but Mindy catches the way his fingers still over his phone.

She knows heโ€™s listening. Mindy lowers her voice just a bit, making it seem like she doesnโ€™t want to be overheard.

โ€œThatโ€™s not all. Hongjoongโ€™s been acting super secretive. I heard heโ€™s meeting up with someone outside of school. A girl.โ€

Wooyoung raises an eyebrow โ€œA girl? Who?โ€

Mindy shrugs, keeping it vague โ€œI donโ€™t know yet, but Iโ€™m sure itโ€™s not YN.โ€

A beat of silence. Then Seonghwa stands, casually stretching before walking offโ€”phone in hand.

Mindy and Wooyoung exchange a look. Hook, line, and sinker.

If Seonghwa really is working with Dann, it wonโ€™t be long before this โ€˜informationโ€™ reaches Mike.

โœฎ โ‹†

Dann moves through the crowded hallway, her arms wrapped tightly around her books as she heads toward the library.

Sheโ€™s been keeping her head down lately, avoiding unnecessary conversationsโ€”especially with Mike and Seonghwa.

After what happened to you, after seeing Mikeโ€™s violence firsthand, something in her feels wrong.

Maybe this has gone too far.

But Seonghwa doesnโ€™t give her a choice.

โ€œDann.โ€

His voice cuts through the noise, smooth and controlled, but she knows him well enough to hear the edge beneath it. She stops mid-step, squeezing her eyes shut for a brief second before turning around.

Seonghwa leans casually against the lockers, arms crossed, looking her up and down with that usual amused smirk. But thereโ€™s something else in his expressionโ€”something sharp.

โ€œWe need to talk.โ€

Dann swallows โ€œI have class.โ€

โ€œIt can wait.โ€ He pushes off the lockers and steps closer, lowering his voice. โ€œI heard something youโ€™re gonna love.โ€

She forces herself to look bored โ€œI doubt that.โ€

Hwa chuckles, shaking his head โ€œYou really should be more curious, Dann. You and I both know Mike would want to hear this.โ€

Her stomach twists โ€œI donโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œThe nerd is using YN.โ€

Dann freezes. Seonghwa watches her carefully, letting the words settle in before continuing.

โ€œWooyoung and Mindy said it. Apparently, Hongjoongโ€™s only with her for popularity. And get thisโ€”she knows it. Sheโ€™s staying with him anyway.โ€

Dann shifts uncomfortably, gripping her books tighter โ€œSo what? Thatโ€™s their problem, not ours.โ€

Hwaโ€™s smirk fades slightly โ€œAre you forgetting who youโ€™re working with? Mike needs to know this.โ€

Dann glances around, her pulse quickening โ€œMaybeโ€ฆ maybe we shouldnโ€™t get involved in this one.โ€

His eyes narrow, and just like that, his amusement vanishes. He steps closer, his voice dropping to a whisper.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with you lately?โ€

โ€œNothing,โ€ She lies, shifting her weight.

โ€œYouโ€™re acting differently.โ€

โ€œI just thinkโ€”โ€ She hesitates, wetting her lips. โ€œI think Mike has enough reasons to hate her already. He doesnโ€™t need this one either.โ€

Seonghwa scoffs, shaking his head โ€œOf course he does. Whatโ€™s better than proving sheโ€™s pathetic? That sheโ€™s weak?โ€ He tilts his head, watching her carefully. โ€œUnless you donโ€™t want to be useful to him anymore?โ€

Dann clenches her jaw. She feels cornered, the guilt pressing down on her chest.

YN doesnโ€™t deserve this.

But Seonghwa is watching her like a predator, waiting for any sign of weakness. If she refuses, heโ€™ll start asking questionsโ€”questions that might lead back to her hesitations, her guilt. If Mike finds out sheโ€™s doubting himโ€ฆ

She exhales shakily, looking down at her shoes โ€œFine,โ€ she mutters. โ€œIโ€™ll tell him.โ€

His smirk returns instantly โ€œGood girl.โ€

She doesnโ€™t move right away. Every fiber of her being screams at her to walk away, to stop this before it goes any further.

But she doesnโ€™t.

Instead, she pulls out her phone, her fingers trembling as she types a message to him.

Dann: We need to talk. Itโ€™s about YN and Hongjoong.

As she presses send, she feels sick.

She doesnโ€™t notice the two figures watching from down the hall.

Wooyoung leans lazily against the lockers, arms crossed, his grin widening. โ€œBabydoll was right.โ€

Mindy hums, inspecting her nails. โ€œHonestly, I knew it since the day I saw her talking with Hwa at the party.โ€

Woo chuckles. โ€œWell, he did what we needed him to do.โ€

Mindy smirks, flicking her gaze toward Dann โ€œNow lets see if Dann tells Mike.โ€

Because once Mike hears this, things will really start falling apart.

โœฎ โ‹† หš๏ฝก๐–ฆน โ‹†๏ฝกยฐโœฉ

The evening air is cool against your skin as you push open the balcony doors of your bedroom, stepping outside with a quiet sigh.

The city lights stretch far into the distance, twinkling against the dark sky.

Everything feels too muchโ€”Hannah, the baby, the truth youโ€™re about to reveal. Itโ€™s all starting to feel real.

But then, thereโ€™s him.

Hongjoong stands a few feet away, leaning against the railing, his gaze distant. Heโ€™s been quiet since you got home, like heโ€™s still trying to piece everything together.

You step beside him, resting your arms on the railing "Youโ€™re thinking too much," You murmur.

He huffs out a small laugh, shaking his head "Can you blame me?"

You tilt your head, watching him "Whatโ€™s on your mind?"

He exhales, running a hand through his hair. "Hannah, the baby, Mike. You." He glances at you then, something unreadable in his expression. "This is a lot, pretty. I justโ€ฆ I donโ€™t want you to go through this alone."

You blink at him, caught off guard.

Heโ€™s serious.

"You really mean that?" You ask softly.

Hongjoong turns fully toward you, his brows drawing together. "Of course I do. Iโ€”" He hesitates, like the words are caught in his throat. Then, with a deep breath, he presses on. "I care about you, YN. More than you think."

Your heart does something strangeโ€”tightens, twists, then swells. You donโ€™t know what to say. No one has ever said that to you, not like this.

Not like they meant it.

So, instead of words, you step closer, your hands reaching out on instinct.

He doesnโ€™t move as you slip your arms around his waist, pressing your forehead against his shoulder.

Heโ€™s warm, steady, safe.

For a second, heโ€™s frozen. Then, slowly, his arms come around you too, holding you just as tightly.

"You donโ€™t have to do anything for me," You whisper. "Justโ€ฆ stay with me."

Hongjoong rests his chin on top of your head, his voice quiet but firm.

"Iโ€™m not going anywhere."

And for the first time in a long time, you believe it.

โœฎ โ‹†

Your room is dimly lit, the golden glow from your bedside lamp casting soft shadows on the walls.

The silence is peaceful, interrupted only by the faint sound of pages flipping as Hongjoong sits on your bed, pretending to read a book but really just stealing glances at you.

Youโ€™re laying next to him, your head resting in his lap while you scroll over your social media.

He is about to say something when a sharp knock.

No. Not a knock. A demand interrupts him.

You freeze, and Hongjoongโ€™s muscles tense. Then the door swings open without waiting for permission.

Mike steps inside, composed as ever, but thereโ€™s something in his eyesโ€”something sharp, something dangerous.

You meet his gaze, already standing from your comfortable position.

"What the hell are youโ€”"

"Youโ€™re pathetic," He cuts you off smoothly "And predictable." His gaze flickers to Hongjoong, and he lets out a small, humorless chuckle "I should have known heโ€™d be here."

"What do you want, Mike?"

"You really are desperate, arenโ€™t you?" His voice is low, full of quiet venom "So desperate for someone to want you that youโ€™re letting this nerd use you. And whatโ€™s worse?" He tilts his head, lips curving into something cruel "You fucking know it."

You smile when you hear that. It was them.

"And where did you get that brilliant theory? Park Seonghwa?" A pause "Or Dann?"

Something flickers in Mikeโ€™s eyes. Park Seonghwa? What does Seonghwa have to do with this?

You scoff "Of course. You must be proudโ€”controlling people like puppets, just like you always do."

Mike steps closer "And youโ€™re any different?" His voice lowers "You lie to yourself every day, pretending youโ€™re not just as pathetic as the rest of them. But deep down, you know the truth."

"You want to talk about truth?" Your heart pounds as you take a step forward, voice daring, reckless "What about Hannah then?"

The moment the name Hannah leaves your lips, the air in the room shifts. Mike stiffens, his entire body going rigid. The usual arrogance in his expression waversโ€”just for a second, but itโ€™s there.

A crack. A weakness.

You see it, Hongjoong sees it.

And then, Mike moves.

The slap comes fast, too fast.

The sound of it rings through the room, a sickening crack as his palm connects with your cheek, whipping your head to the side.

The sting is instant, burning hot, your skin already throbbing. You gasp, stumbling back, your vision blurring for a split second.

But before you can process the painโ€”before you can even reactโ€”Hongjoong is already moving.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?!" The anger in his voice is like nothing youโ€™ve ever heard before.

Hongjoong shoves Mike back, his entire body coiled with fury. The sharp contrast between his usual calm demeanor and the pure rage in his eyes is enough to make even Mike falter.

"You donโ€™t get to do that," Hongjoong seethes, standing between you and your brother, fists clenched so tightly his knuckles are white. "Not to her. Not to anyone."

Mikeโ€™s lips curl, his composure snapping back into place, but thereโ€™s an unmistakable flicker of irritationโ€”maybe even surpriseโ€”at Hongjoongโ€™s audacity.

"And what exactly do you think youโ€™re doing?" Mike taunts, brushing off the shove like it was nothing. "You think you can protect her?" He scoffs. "You think she needs you?"

Hongjoong doesnโ€™t flinch "She doesnโ€™t need me," He admits, voice steady. "But Iโ€™m still here. And I wonโ€™t fucking stand by while you hurt her."

Thereโ€™s something raw, undeniable in his words. You blink, still dazed from the slap, your hand hovering near your stinging cheek. Hongjoong turns slightly, eyes softening when they land on you.

"Are you okay, pretty?" His voice is lower now, gentle.

Something inside you twists.

Mike clicks his tongue in disgust "Pathetic," He mutters.

Hongjoongโ€™s jaw clenches "Get the fuck out."

For the first time, Mike hesitates.

Hongjoongโ€™s not just some quiet, desperate nerd anymore. Heโ€™s furious. Unshakable. And for once, Mike doesnโ€™t have complete control over the situation.

"Youโ€™re making a mistake, nerd." Mike finally says, his voice cold, but thereโ€™s something else there tooโ€”annoyance, maybe even unease.

"Get. Out," Hongjoong repeats, this time his voice lower, quieterโ€”but somehow deadlier.

Mike holds his gaze for a long moment before scoffing and turning toward the door. But before he leaves, he glances at you one last time.

"You think youโ€™re playing some clever game, but you have no idea what youโ€™re doing," He murmurs. "Youโ€™ll regret this, YN."

With that, he walks out, slamming the door behind him. The room is suffocatingly silent in the aftermath.

Hongjoong exhales sharply, running a hand through his hair as he turns back to you. His fingers twitch, like he wants to reach for you but isnโ€™t sure if he should.

"Prettyโ€”"

"Iโ€™m fine," You cut him off, voice tight.

But youโ€™re not fine.

Youโ€™re shaking. Your cheek burns. Your heart is racing. And then, without thinking, you step forward and wrap your arms around Hongjoong.

He melts immediately into the embrace, his arms coming around you protectively.

"Iโ€™ve got you," He murmurs into your hair. "Iโ€™m right here."

You paced around your bedroom, restless energy driving each step as the anticipation of your upcoming therapy session settled over you. The faint glow of the laptop screen illuminated the room, the app open and waiting. The timer ticked down with an almost menacing rhythm as you adjusted the laptop, twisting it slightly left, then right, before stepping back to assess the angle.

Tired eyes stared back at you, dulled by sleepless nights, and the lines on your face seemed deeper, etched by the weight of too many burdens. No amount of hydrating could fix this.

The laptop chimed, signaling the start of the session. With a heavy sigh, you clicked "Join." The screen flickered, and soon the familiar face of your therapist, Jungah, came into view.ย

โ€œY/N! How are you?โ€ย

You hesitated, your eyes darting to the floor for a moment. โ€œIโ€™m...well, a lot has happened since our last session.โ€

Jungah nodded gently, her expression softening as she leaned in, resting her chin in the palm of her hand. โ€œTell me more,โ€ she encouraged.

โ€œMingi was in an accident,โ€ you said, the words feeling heavier as they left your mouth. โ€œHeโ€™sโ€ฆin a coma right now.โ€

โ€œOh Y/N, Iโ€™m so sorry to hear that. I canโ€™t imagine what youโ€™re going through right now! How are you holding up?โ€

You nodded, the lump in your throat making it hard to respond. โ€œIโ€™m pretty overwhelmed. I got a dog though, which is great. But everything about the situation just feels soโ€ฆcomplicated,โ€ you admitted, your voice dropping slightly.ย

โ€œPart of me feels like I should beโ€ฆdevastated. And I am, in a way. I think just because weโ€™ve always had such a difficult relationship.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay to feel all of those things. Thereโ€™s no โ€˜rightโ€™ way to process something like this. Whatโ€™s been the hardest part for you?โ€

You hesitated, your fingers tracing patterns on the edge of your desk as your thoughts churned.

โ€œProbably the fact that it reminds me of when Hongjoong was in the hospital. During his battle with cancer.โ€

โ€œRight, and we talked about that in our first session. What kind of feelings does this bring up for you?โ€

You swallowed hard, the words clawing their way out of you.ย

โ€œGuilt. I canโ€™t believe I was in class when it happened,โ€ you began, your voice already trembling. Your voice cracked, and you gripped the edge of the desk tightly. Your breath hitched, and you shook your head as tears pricked at the corners of your eyes.ย

โ€œI should have been there,โ€ you said, the words spilling out in a rush, your voice rising with emotion. โ€œI shouldโ€™ve skipped class, stayed by his side, done something. I thought I had more time, and thenโ€”then I didnโ€™t.โ€

A single tear slipped down your cheek, and you quickly wiped it away, frustration bubbling beneath the surface.ย

โ€œHe died alone. Alone. And I wasnโ€™t there to tell him I loved him one last time, to hold his hand, to let him know he wasnโ€™t alone.โ€

You pressed your palm against your chest, as if trying to steady the ache threatening to consume you.

โ€œAnd now, with Mingi,โ€ you continued, your words tumbling out in a rush. โ€œWeโ€™ve never been close. But the thought of leaving him alone, of him waking up, o-or dying and not having anyone there, makes it feel like itโ€™s happening all over again.โ€

Your voice broke completely, and a sob tore from your throat. You buried your face in your hands, fingers clutching at your temples as though trying to contain the flood of emotions pouring out.ย

Mingiโ€™s head shot up, his ears twitching as the sound of your broken sobs filled the room. Panic flashed in his eyes, and he scrambled to his feet, the urgency of your pain pulling him forward. He stumbled slightly, his small paws skidding on the floor in his haste, but he didnโ€™t stop until he was in your lap.

With all the force his tiny body could muster, he pressed against you, nudging your hands, pawing at your chestโ€”anything to pull you back from the edge. His movements were frantic, almost desperate, as if he could piece you back together with his touch.

No, no, no, don't cry.

โ€œWhy does this keep happening to me?โ€ you choked out. You curled in on yourself, arms wrapping around your middle as if to contain the grief threatening to consume you whole.ย

Mingi had never seen you like this. The weight of it crushed himโ€”heavier than any argument youโ€™d ever had, sharper than the harshest words exchanged in anger.ย

Heโ€™d known about Hongjoongโ€™s death in a detached, matter-of-fact wayโ€”something that had happened before your lives became entangled. But until now, it hadnโ€™t occurred to him how deeply that loss had scarred you, how it marred your heart.

You werenโ€™t just the person heโ€™d been forced to marry, the one heโ€™d spent so much energy resenting and clashing with. You were a whole personโ€”someone who had loved, lost, and carried burdens he hadnโ€™t even noticed.

โ€œY/N,โ€ Jungah said softly, โ€œtake a deep breath with me. Just one. In through your nose...and out through your mouth.โ€

You tried to follow her lead, managing a shaky inhale, then exhaling in a stuttering gasp, fresh tears spilling down as you followed the motions.

โ€œItโ€™s not your fault,โ€ Jungah said. โ€œNone of this is your faultโ€”not Hongjoongโ€™s passing, and not Mingiโ€™s accident. You loved Hongjoong, and youโ€™re doing everything you can for Mingi now. Thatโ€™s what matters.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s the problem,โ€ you said, your voice trembling. โ€œI shouldnโ€™t be the only one. His parentsโ€”โ€ Your words caught, a wave of anger rising in your throat, hot and bitter, cutting you off mid-sentence.

โ€œThey wouldnโ€™t even take turns staying with him at the hospital! I asked. But his mom brushed me off like it was nothing, like their son lying there broken didnโ€™t matter.โ€

Jungahโ€™s face softened with understanding, but you could see the anger flicker in her eyes. โ€œThatโ€™s not on you, either. Theyโ€™re the ones failing him, not you.โ€

โ€œI justโ€ฆI just canโ€™t stand the thought of him being alone. Even after everything heโ€™s done, after all the hurtโ€”he doesnโ€™t deserve that. No one does.โ€

Mingiโ€™s heart clenchedโ€”not with guilt, but with a profound, almost overwhelming sense of gratitude. You were angry, hurt, and exhausted, yet you still stood up for him. You still wanted to be there for him, even after all the ways heโ€™d hurt you, you stayed.

It struck him thenโ€“he had spent so much time fighting against your world, your pain, but had never truly tried to understand it.

โ€œYouโ€™re right to be angry. They should be there for him, but theyโ€™re not, and thatโ€™s their shame to bear. You, on the other hand, have gone above and beyond. Youโ€™ve stayed. Youโ€™ve cared. And that says so much more about who you are.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so tired,โ€ you admitted. "I donโ€™t even know if Iโ€™m doing this because I care or because Iโ€™m afraid of looking like a terrible person. I just want to do the right thing, but I donโ€™t know what that is anymore.โ€

โ€œY/N,โ€ she said gently, โ€œit sounds like youโ€™re carrying a lot and putting everyone elseโ€™s needs before your own. You know, itโ€™s okay to prioritize yourself.โ€

โ€œI know, I know.โ€ You ran a shaky hand through your hair, โ€œI donโ€™t know what that looks like for me right now. I think I just care too much about people whoโ€™d never do the same for me. I feelโ€ฆpathetic, honestly.โ€ย

โ€œI hear you,โ€ Jungah said softly. โ€œYouโ€™ve been through a lot, and itโ€™s natural to question where you stand, especially when you give so much of yourself to others and donโ€™t always get it back.โ€

Your gaze drifted down to Maro, his soft brown eyes watching you intently. As if sensing your turmoil, he nudged his head against your hand. You offered him a weak smile, gently scratching behind his ears.ย

โ€œBut I need you to hear this, Y/N. Youโ€™re showing compassion, and thereโ€™s incredible strength in that. Youโ€™re standing up for someone who needs your care and your support, someone who may not even realize how much they need you right now.โ€

โ€œTaking care of yourself isnโ€™t a betrayal of those qualities, itโ€™s a part of them. You deserve the same care you give to everyone else. Youโ€™re worthy of that, Y/N. You need to remember that.โ€

Jungah smiled softly as your therapy session came to a close. โ€œWeโ€™ll keep working through this, step by step. For now, just think about what self-care might look like for you. Youโ€™ve been through so much, Y/N. Give yourself the grace you so readily give to others.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ you sniffled, wiping at your eyes.ย

With a shaky exhale, you gave her a small, grateful wave before reaching out to end the call. The screen went dark, and the silence of the room rushed in to fill the space where her voice had been.

For a moment, you just sat there, staring at the blank screen of your laptop. The tears welled up again, but this time they came slower, quieter, as if you were finally too tired to hold them back. You let out a long, trembling sigh before looking down at Maro, who was watching you intensely.ย

You wrapped your arms around him, pulling him close as he nestled into your chest. โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ you murmured into his fur, your voice barely audible.ย

You didnโ€™t even know exactly what you were apologizing forโ€”maybe for being angry, for feeling conflicted, for not having all the answers. But Mingi didnโ€™t flinch or pull away. Instead, he nuzzled closer, his way of silently telling you he understood, that he saw the pain you were carrying.

He could feel it allโ€”the storm raging inside you. The guilt, the exhaustion, the anger. He was someone who had hurt you, who had failed you in ways he couldnโ€™t begin to measure. Yet here you were, holding him as if he was still worth fighting for.

You were fightingโ€”for him, for yourself, for the hope that things could be different. And though he didnโ€™t know if he deserved it, Mingi silently willed you to keep going. Somehow, in the stillness, he realized somethingโ€ฆyou were his reason to fight, too.

The cafรฉ was quiet when you arrived, the gentle hum of conversations and the clinking of silverware blending into a soft, comforting din. Near the window, Mrs. Kim sat in the warm glow of sunlight, quietly leafing through a stack of sheet music while humming along to the notes.

โ€œY/N!โ€ she greeted, her face lighting up as she caught sight of you. Rising from her seat, she pulled you into a gentle hug, her familiar warmth easing the lingering tension in your shoulders. Her gaze dropped, and her expression softened when she noticed the small figure nestled at your feet.

โ€œAnd who is this?โ€ The corners of her mouth lifted into a smile.

โ€œThis is Maro,โ€ you replied, scooping him up into your arms. His ears perked up at the sound of his name, his curious eyes darting toward Mrs. Kim.ย

โ€œI hope itโ€™s okay that I brought him along.โ€

Mrs. Kim chuckled, her hand already reaching out toward him. โ€œOf course itโ€™s okay,โ€ she said warmly, her fingers brushing against his soft fur as she gently scratched behind his ears. Maro leaned into her touch, his fluffy tail wagging slightly.

โ€œItโ€™s nice to have some extra company.โ€

You sat down, and Maro settled under the table as the server came by to take your order. Hongjoongโ€™s mother watched you for a moment, her gaze warm but thoughtful, as if she was piecing something together.ย

โ€œYou seemโ€ฆtired,โ€ she noted softly.ย

You let out a dry chuckle, brushing a hand through your hair. โ€œWhen youโ€™re married to the most narcissistic family on the planet, it kind of comes with the territory,โ€ you replied with a wry smile, the humor in your words unable to mask the weariness behind them.

Mingi let out a quiet huff, his ears flicking back as he gave you a sidelong glance from his position under the table. His frown was subtle but noticeable, a clear sign that he didnโ€™t entirely agree with your assessment of his familyโ€”even if he couldnโ€™t voice his objections.

โ€œMarriage can beโ€ฆ complicated,โ€ she said gently, lifting her mug to her lips, โ€œbut itโ€™s in those challenges that we often discover who we really are.โ€

Mrs. Kim folded her hands over the sheet music, her gaze warm yet thoughtful. โ€œItโ€™s also about finding ways to grow together. Itโ€™s often the small, quiet decisions to stay and try that matter most, even when it feels impossible.โ€

She paused before adding, โ€œI know the Songs can beโ€ฆintense. But people like that are mirrors. They reflect parts of yourselfโ€”your strengths, weaknesses, and fears. Facing those reflections isnโ€™t easy, but it can lead to unexpected growth.โ€

โ€œI just wish it didnโ€™t feel like a constant fight. Like Iโ€™m always proving somethingโ€”to them, to myself, to Mingi.โ€

โ€œProving yourself is exhausting. But maybe, without realizing it, youโ€™re showing them how to fight for something worth keeping.โ€ Mrs. Kimโ€™s voice was gentle, her words lingering in the air before she added, almost as an afterthought, โ€œOh, before I forgetโ€ฆโ€

She slid the stack of sheet music into your hands, your breath caught as you scanned the pages, immediately recognizing Hongjoongโ€™s handwritingโ€”the chaotic, unruly script that mirrored the way his mind danced through ideas, always just a little ahead of itself.

โ€œJazz?โ€ you murmured, a small, bittersweet smile tugging at your lips.

โ€œJust a few of his hundreds of compositions heโ€™d written over the years,โ€ she explained, her own smile touched with sadness. โ€œI thoughtโ€ฆyou might want to have them.โ€

You ran your fingers lightly over the pages, the notes and markings so distinctly himโ€”bold, inventive, and just a touch wild. The ache in your chest swelled, but it was softened by the warmth of the memory.

โ€œThank you,โ€ you said softly, your voice thick with emotion. โ€œThis means a lot.โ€

โ€œHe always wanted his music to be shared, to bring people joy. I think heโ€™d be happy knowing you have these.โ€

Under the table, Mingi pawed at Mrs. Kimโ€™s leg. It was a small, almost instinctive gesture, as if even in his canine form, he wanted to ease the weight of her sadness. Mrs. Kimโ€™s gaze softened as she glanced down at him.

Mingi studied her closely, sensing the deep sadness she carried beneath her calm demeanor. It was an enduring grief for her son, one that seemed to seep into every word she spoke and every careful action she took. Yet, she never let it consume her. Instead, she channeled it into wisdom, offering others a sense of peace and understanding.

He couldnโ€™t help but wonder if his own mother would ever be capable of finding those same emotions.

โ€œYouโ€™re a sweet one, arenโ€™t you?โ€ she murmured, her voice low, almost as though she were speaking to herself.

โ€œThank you for keeping me company, dear.โ€

Mingi tilted his head, his small tail wagging slightly as he considered her words. People often avoided what they didnโ€™t understand or couldnโ€™t fix. And yet, here he was, a tiny puppy, silently promising her he wouldnโ€™t be one of those peopleโ€”at least, not today.

โ€œExcuse me? Have you seen my daughter?โ€ย

The frantic question cut through the murmur of the busy street. Mrs. Kim and Mingi turned in unison, her hand still resting on the leash as her gaze landed on the source of the voice. You looked up from adjusting your coat just in time to catch the womanโ€™s anxious expression as she stopped abruptly, her chest rising and falling with shallow breaths.

โ€œI-Iโ€™m sorry,โ€ she stammered, โ€œMy daughter, Yena, sheโ€™s...sheโ€™s gone! She was right beside me just a moment ago, and now I canโ€™t find her. Sheโ€™s five, wearing a pink jacket and yellow rain boots?โ€

Mrs. Kimโ€™s eyes softened immediately, her expression one of concern. โ€œOh, Iโ€™m so sorry to hear that. We havenโ€™t seen her, but weโ€™ll keep an eye out for her.โ€ She turned to you for confirmation, and you nodded, already scanning the area.ย ย ย ย

โ€œThank you, thank you,โ€ she said, though her gaze was already shifting, searching the busy street.

โ€œI turned around for a second and the next thing I knew, sheโ€™s gone!โ€

โ€œNo, donโ€™t blame yourself,โ€ Mrs. Kim said gently, her voice steady and soothing. โ€œChildren are naturally curious. Letโ€™s focus on finding her now. Have you called the authorities?โ€

The woman nodded quickly, her hands trembling as she fumbled to show a picture of her daughter on her phone.

โ€œYes. This is her,โ€ she said, holding her phone out for you to see.

Pictured was a bright-eyed little girl, with round cheeks, grinning widely as she clutched a stuffed rabbit nearly as big as she was.ย

โ€œWhere did you last see her?โ€ you asked, already forming a mental map of the area.ย

โ€œJust over there,โ€ the woman said, her hand shaking as she pointed toward the park entrance.

โ€œWe were sitting by the benches under the oak tree, and I turned to grab her water bottle from my bagโ€ฆโ€ Her voice wavered, and she paused, her breaths growing shallow and erratic as the memory clearly consumed her.

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ you interjected gently, your tone steady and reassuring. You leaned in slightly, meeting her panicked gaze.ย

โ€œYouโ€™ve done the right thing by calling for help. Weโ€™ll keep an eye out for her and report anything we find to the authorities.โ€

The woman nodded shakily, clutching her phone as if it were a lifeline. โ€œThank you,โ€ she whispered, her voice trembling under the weight of her fear.

You gave her a reassuring smile, though the heaviness in your chest lingered.ย

With a quick nod, you and Mrs. Kim turned to make your way toward the park, leaving Yenaโ€™s mother behind to continue her frantic search.

โ€œHow unfortunate,โ€ Mrs. Kim sighed after a moment, breaking the silence. She shook her head, her expression clouded with sympathy.ย

โ€œI canโ€™t imagine what that woman is going through. Losing sight of your child, even for a second...itโ€™s a nightmare no parent should ever have to endure.โ€

Mingi gave a small huff, his nose twitching as he sniffed the air. His steps quickened slightly, and you had to tighten your grip on the leash to keep him from pulling too far ahead.

Sheโ€™s around here somewhere, his instincts told him as he sniffed the air again. Something about the situationโ€”the motherโ€™s panic and the childโ€™s vulnerability, tugged at a deep place in his heart. It didnโ€™t matter that he didnโ€™t know Yena, she was small, defenseless, and alone. That was enough for Mingi to feel protective.

He remembered the times heโ€™d been alone, in places where no one called his name or came looking for him. But Yena wouldnโ€™t feel that loneliness, not if Mingi could help it. She needed someone, and he was determined to be that someone.

Whatever loneliness heโ€™d known in his own life, he wouldnโ€™t let a lost little girl feel it. Not while he could do something about it.

Mingi sniffed the air again, his movements growing more urgent. His ears twitched, his muscles tensed, and his posture shifted, radiating a focused energy that caught your attention. You noticed his change immediately, the way he stopped sniffing idly and started searching with intent.

โ€œMaro?โ€ Your grip on the leash tightened instinctively as he stepped forward, his nose brushing the ground before lifting to sniff the air again.

Mingi hesitated for a moment, his body rigid, as though confirming something only he could sense. Then, without warning, he surged forward, the leash pulling taut in your hands.

โ€œMaro, wait!โ€ you called, trying to hold him back, but his determination overpowered your grip. With a quick twist of his body, Mingi wriggled free of his harness. The loop fell to the ground with a soft thud, and in a flash, he was off.

โ€œNo!โ€ you shouted, panic rising in your chest. You took off after him, your heart pounding as his barking grew louder, guiding you toward his destination.

He darted through the park, weaving between trees and darting past startled spectators, as though he were following a trail only he could detect. You struggled to keep up, adrenaline driving your steps as you sprinted after him.

"Go away!" Yena cried, her voice breaking as she snatched her arm away from the strange woman. Her wide, tear-filled eyes darted around the clearing, searching for an escape.

"I'm not a stranger," the woman said, her tone syrupy but strained, a smile tugging uncomfortably at the corners of her lips.

"Iโ€™m your mommyโ€™s friend."

"My mommy said never to go with strangers!โ€

The woman crouched slightly, her smile tight and unnatural as her patience began to wear thin.

โ€œI told you, Iโ€™m not a stranger,โ€ she said, her voice growing sharper. Her eyes glinted with something cold as she glanced around the clearing.ย

โ€œYouโ€™ll be in trouble if you donโ€™t listen to me, little girl. Do you want that?โ€

Before the woman could reach for her again, furious barking erupted from the trees. Mingi charged into the clearing, positioning himself between the girl and the woman, his growls low and menacing.

โ€œShoo!โ€ she snapped, waving her hand at him as though he were a mere nuisance. โ€œGet out of here, you little pest!โ€

But Mingi didnโ€™t flinch. His growls deepened, his stance lowering as if ready to lunge if she dared to come closer. His determination seemed to fill the air, daring her to make a move.

โ€œA puppy!โ€ Yena gasped, her tears momentarily forgotten as she crouched slightly behind him.

โ€œMaro!โ€ you called, your voice sharp. He turned briefly, his tail wagging slightly at the sound of your voice, but he quickly refocused on the woman, his growls resuming.

The womanโ€™s gaze darted between you and the dog, her jaw tightening. For a fleeting moment, her eyes locked with yours, and recognition flashed in her expressionโ€”a flicker of something dark and calculated. Her lips curled into a sneer before she turned and bolted, disappearing into the trees with a speed that left you stunned.

Mingi barked after her once, but then turned his attention back to Yena. Rising onto his hind legs, he nudged her gently as if urging her to sit. Once she did, he hopped into her lap without hesitation, his warm, furry body pressing against hers like a shield.

Yena gasped softly at the contact, her small hands instinctively clutching at his soft fur. She buried her fingers into his coat, the warmth and comfort he provided allowing her sobs to finally break free.

โ€œOh my god, Yena!โ€ you gasped, dropping to your knees beside her. Your hands hovered for a moment, unsure whether to touch her or give her space. โ€œAre you okay?โ€

Yena peeked up at you, her tear-streaked face still pressed against Mingiโ€™s side.

โ€œThe bad ladyโ€™s gone?โ€ she whispered, her voice fragile.

โ€œSheโ€™s gone,โ€ you assured her. You reached out, brushing a strand of her disheveled hair away from her face.

โ€œMaro made sure of it. He scared her away.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s a good puppy,โ€ she murmured shakily, her voice barely above a whisper. Her fingers stroked his back, and though her movements were timid, they carried a quiet gratitude.

Your hands fumbled for your phone, the adrenaline making your fingers clumsy. You swiped at the screen, barely managing to bring up Mrs. Kimโ€™s number. Pressing the call button, you held the phone to your ear, your eyes scanning the tree line as if to ensure the woman wouldnโ€™t reappear.

The phone rang once, then twice, before Mrs. Kimโ€™s voice came through, steady but laced with worry.

โ€œDid you find her?โ€ she asked, her words hurried.

โ€œYes,โ€ you said quickly, glancing down at Yena, who was still clutching Maro. โ€œSheโ€™s here. Sheโ€™s safe, butโ€ฆโ€ You hesitated, swallowing hard before continuing.

โ€œCall the cops. Iโ€™ll stay here with her until they arrive.โ€

โ‹†

The faint sound of hurried footsteps reached your ears, and when you glanced toward the path, you saw Mrs. Kim, Yenaโ€™s mother, and two officers running toward you.ย

โ€œYena!โ€ she called, her voice cracking as she rushed forward.

โ€œMommy!โ€ Yena cried, scrambling to her feet, still clutching Mingi. She stumbled toward her mother, who dropped to her knees and wrapped her arms around her daughter tightly. Yena buried her face in her motherโ€™s shoulder, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks.

โ€œThank you,โ€ she said, her voice thick with emotion. โ€œThank you so much. I donโ€™t know what I would have done ifโ€”โ€ Her voice broke, and she hugged Yena even tighter.

โ€œI donโ€™t know how I can ever repay you!โ€ she continued.

You shook your head gently, offering her a warm, reassuring smile. โ€œThereโ€™s no need,โ€ you said, your voice calm but earnest. โ€œIโ€™m just glad I was here to help. Thatโ€™s all that matters.โ€

Mingi barked softly, as if echoing your sentiments. His tail wagged as he sat back at your feet, looking every bit the proud protector he was. Yena pulled back slightly from her motherโ€™s embrace, wiping at her eyes with one hand while the other reached down to pet Mingi.

โ€œThe puppy saved me,โ€ she said softly, her voice still shaky but filled with awe. โ€œHe scared the bad lady away.โ€

You crouched down to Mingiโ€™s level, scratching behind his ears. โ€œHeโ€™s the real hero here,โ€ you said, glancing up at Mrs. Kim with a small smile.

โ€œHe knew something was wrong before I did.โ€

Mingi let out a happy huff, rolling onto his back to expose his belly, practically inviting Yena to join in the celebration. The little girl giggled through her tears, her small hands eagerly scratching his side.

Yenaโ€™s mother knelt beside her, her trembling hand reaching out hesitantly. Her fingers brushed over Mingiโ€™s soft fur, and her lips quivered with emotion.ย

โ€œThank you,โ€ she whispered again, her voice cracking as she looked back at Yena. โ€œThank you both.โ€

โ€œMsโ€ฆ?โ€ one of the officers interrupted gently, his notebook in hand.

โ€œChoi,โ€ you said, standing to face him. โ€œUm, Iโ€™m Choi Y/N.โ€

โ€œDo you mind providing a witness statement?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ you replied, taking a steadying breath. โ€œI was walking my dog when I saw a woman with Yena,โ€ you began.

โ€œThe woman claimed she was a friend of the mother, but something about her seemedโ€ฆoff. She got increasingly aggressive when Yena didnโ€™t cooperate.โ€

The officer nodded, scribbling rapidly in his notepad. โ€œCan you describe the woman?โ€

โ€œShe looked like she was her forties,โ€ you said, replaying the scene in your mind. โ€œDark hair, pulled back tightly. She was wearing a black jacket and purple pants and seemed disheveled. When I caught up to Maro, she froze like a deer in the headlights and bolted into the trees.โ€

โ€œDid you see which direction she ran?โ€

You nodded, pointing toward the dense tree line a few yards away. โ€œThat way. She moved fast, like she knew exactly where she was going.โ€

The officer glanced in the direction you indicated, then back at his notes with a heavy sigh.ย

โ€œWeโ€™ll search the area and alert nearby units to be on the lookout for someone matching her description. In the meantime, thank you for stepping in. Your dogโ€™s instincts likely saved this little girl.โ€

As the officers wrapped up their investigation, you crouched down one last time to Yenaโ€™s level. Her wide eyes were still a little red from crying, but there was a sparkle of hope in them now.ย

โ€œYou were so brave today. And you know what? Maro thinks youโ€™re a hero, too.โ€

Yenaโ€™s lips curled into a shy smile as she reached out to pet his head. He leaned into her touch, his tail wagging lazily.

โ€œCan I play with him again sometime?โ€ย

โ€œAnytime,โ€ you promised. โ€œYou just let your mom know, and weโ€™ll make it happen.โ€

With a final wave, you gave Mrs. Kim a quick hug, murmuring your thanks before sheepishly retrieving the sheet music you had almost forgotten. Clutching it tightly, you turned to leave, Mingi falling into step beside you.

The walk home was quieter now, the crisp night air carrying the faint rustle of leaves. Mingi trotted happily at your side, his leash loose, as if he understood the weight of the moment but chose not to linger on it. Instead, his steady presence offered you a quiet comfort, grounding you in the stillness of the night.

When you reached the penthouse, you slipped off your shoes, hung up Mingiโ€™s leash, and set the sheet music on the music shelf.ย

โ€œWell, today was something else,โ€ you muttered, rubbing the back of your neck as you flopped onto the couch.

Before you could settle in, Mingi hopped up beside you, his fluffy tail wagging in a lazy rhythm. Without hesitation, he settled into your lap as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

You chuckled softly, your fingers finding their way behind his ears, scratching gently in a spot you knew he loved.

โ€œWe make a pretty great team, huh?โ€

You leaned back into the cushions, your hand slipping from behind his ears to run through the soft fur along his back. Each stroke seemed to soothe not just him, but you as well.ย

โ€œYouโ€™re amazing, you know that?โ€ you murmured after a moment, your voice quieter now.ย

โ€œI donโ€™t know what Iโ€™d do without you.โ€

Mingi shifted slightly, resting his head against your chest as his eyes fluttered shut, lulled by the rhythm of your heartbeat. Accepting this new form hadnโ€™t been easy; it challenged everything he thought he knew about himself.ย

But moments like this, with your hand threading gently through his fur and your voice brimming with affection, chipped away at his doubts. The walls he had so carefully constructed around his heart crumbled, leaving him exposed to a truth he could no longer deny: the feelings growing within him, his feelings for you.

Mingi surrendered to the quiet realization that he no longer wanted to run from you or from the parts of himself he couldnโ€™t face. You had shown him something he thought heโ€™d lost; a capacity for care, compassion, and even love.ย

And he wanted to show you that could become something more.ย

But his peace was short-lived as your phone blared to life, interrupting his nap. Jiwooโ€™s name lit up the screen, and with a tired sigh, you swiped to answer, already bracing yourself for her shenanigans.ย

That annoying woman!

โ€œY/N!โ€ Jiwooโ€™s voice was bright and full of excitement. โ€œIโ€™ve found it. The place. Itโ€™s in Prague, and itโ€™s everything youโ€™ve been looking forโ€”charming, historic, and in a perfect location!โ€

โ€œPrague is a little far, donโ€™t you think?โ€

โ€œExactly!โ€ Jiwoo exclaimed, as if youโ€™d just proved her point. โ€œFar enough to get away from all these assholes!โ€

You chuckled softly, your fingers absentmindedly carding through Maroโ€™s fur. He stirred slightly, letting out a soft sigh as he snuggled deeper against your chest. Jiwooโ€™s energy was infectious, even when you werenโ€™t entirely on board with her ideas.

โ€œSpeaking of assholes,โ€ she said, her tone dropping, โ€œhave you heard about Ahri?โ€

Your stomach dropped at the mention of her name. โ€œWhat about her?โ€ย

โ€œSo,โ€ she started, drawing out the word, โ€œSara saw her the other night at The Z. And she wasnโ€™t alone. She was looking way too cozy with that model guy. Whatโ€™s his name? Mingyu or something. Itโ€™s kind of creepy that he and Mingi have similar sounding names.โ€

Mingiโ€™s relationship with Ahri had always been a sore spot, a constant reminder that you had no place in his life. But hearing this made you feel something you couldnโ€™t quite placeโ€”vindicated? Sad? Angry? Maybe all three.

โ€œAnd get thisโ€”when Sara asked her about Mingi, she brushed it off. Like she wasnโ€™t walking around a few weeks ago looking pretty banged up herself. I mean, can you believe it? While heโ€™s in a coma?โ€

โ€œTheir relationship doesnโ€™t concern me,โ€ you replied, but your words felt hollow.ย

โ€œNot your business?โ€ Jiwoo scoffed. โ€œItโ€™s disgusting, Y/N. I know you and Mingi have a complicated relationshipโ€“I get it. but he doesnโ€™t deserve that. No one does. Sheโ€™s out here living her best life while heโ€™s fighting for his.โ€

Her outrage echoed your own feelings, but instead of comfort, it only heightened the discomfort twisting in your chest. Each mention of Ahri reminded you that this moment, where you were pouring your heart into caring for him, staying by his side when no one else would, was nothing more than a spell cast by some higher being.

Once the spell was broken, you'd return to your separate lives despite being bound to one another.

โ€œAnyway,โ€ Jiwoo said, sensing your silence, โ€œthatโ€™s just more reason to take the leap. Leave all this drama behind and protect your peace. Start over. You might actually find love too!โ€

You let out a dry laugh, though it wasnโ€™t the least bit genuine. โ€œYeah, right. Love.โ€

The words tasted bitter on your tongue, and the thought of it, of someone loving you in the way you needed, in the way youโ€™d always hoped felt almost impossible.

โ€œI mean, if Czech men arenโ€™t your thing, I know Park Seongโ€”โ€

โ€œMy foodโ€™s here, bye!โ€ you blurted out abruptly, cutting her off before she could finish her sentence.ย

You rested your head back against the couch and closed your eyes for a moment, shifting Maro against you, his small body fitting so easily into the curve of your side.ย

Who needs husbands when you have a dog? You couldnโ€™t help but smile at the thought. Maro, with his unwavering loyalty and comforting little form, was all you needed right now. He didnโ€™t ask anything of youโ€”just your love and care in return. A love that came without expectations, without demands for answers or explanations.

With him, you could simply be.

Outside the towering penthouse, a figure lingered in the shadows, her frail frame swallowed by a dark jacket. Her fists were clenched tightly at her sides, knuckles stark white, and her shoulders trembled with each shallow, uneven breath. Then, without a sound, she slipped into the darkness, leaving no trace behind.

But the chill that lingered in the air suggested she wouldnโ€™t be gone for long.
