We make jokes about the Darkling being an obvious villain name, but he was so charming and intriguing when I first read the book when I was seventeen that when the reveal came I was surprised for a split second before my thinking brain kicked in like:

“Oh right. He’s called the darkling and he has literal darkness powers. You were just horny and forgot”
