Rei Himura, Mer! AU

Enji, surrounded by the white walls of the hospital and the beeping of the heart monitor attached to Rei, holding his son for the first time and being in complete awe. He holds the baby so gently, like one wrong move would destroy the fragile peace between the three of them. The child blinks at him with beautiful blue, oh so blue eyes, the same color as him and he just falls in love right then and there. Rei is looking at him with such fondness, and he decides right then and there that he'd do anything to keep this child happy and loved.

Cut to two decades later, no. 1 hero Endeavor kneels on the battlefield, the broken and burned body of his first born cradled in his arms. His son, who had only wanted to make him proud. Who he had abandoned and ignored in a pursuit of a legacy that has only left him with an absent wife and a quiet home. The same legacy that led to his son burning alive twice, first for his love and the second for his death. He looks at the empty shell of a man lying in his arms, heart breaking on how his beautiful baby boy had succumbed to such a painful life because of him. That the promise he made once upon a time to love his son unconditionally will forever remain unfulfilled.

I have mixed feelings about Enji’s redemption arc.

I AM HERE vs JUST WATCH ME

maybe I’m thinking too much. But as I wrote snippets of Enji’s fanfic with whatever ideas that came to my mind, All Might’s and Endeavour’s catchphrase comes to my mind rather abruptly. It’s just my perspective on the matter. 

You know how All Might’s catchphrase is “I AM HERE” , whereas during the hero ceremony when Endeavour gets the title number one, he simply says “JUST WATCH ME”. At first I thought, how reassuring All Might’s words are, and how proud Endeavour sounds with his. My mind goes “right, Enji. Like you’re that great to deal with everything ON YOUR OWN”. 

Then I began processing those thoughts, relating it to my day to day interactions with others and in what kind of situations do I hear those phrases from. 

All Might’s “I AM HERE” is the kind of words I’d usually receive and offer when we’re shouldering a burden together. Words of assurance as I hold someone’s hands and go through the tough times with them. In a way, it’s a phrase that meant we are doing it together. It’s not a bad phrase. It’s comforting, it’s lovely, it’s encouraging. In other words, you are not alone. 

How often do I hear the words “JUST WATCH ME”? It is when I learn by example. In a class as the teachers demonstrate, during my internship when my supervisor guides me… and especially when my mother would shoulder a burden all on her own, refusing to share it with me, she’d say “just watch me”, followed by the words “everything will be alright”. “Just watch me” seems like a proud phrase at the beginning, but it made me realize how lonely it was to walk alone as others watch.

I have a headcanon that since he does have a personal driver, Endeavor does not know nor has he ever learned how to drive. In Japan, you can't get a driver's license until you're eighteen. He would have graduated UA by then, and after multiple years of using public transportation, he probably had the practical mindset of, "If it ain't broke," and just never bothered until he was successful enough to hire someone. (Actually, headcanon that he just lived in his office until he made it big.)

In contrast, Rei definitely knows how to drive and prefers to floor it whenever possible.

He got into a car with her behind the wheel once and vowed never again.
