"I have grown to love secrecy. It seems to be the one thing that can make modern life mysterious or marvellous to us."
- The Picture of Dorian Gray
Love is so exquisitely different, how can we possibly claim to be familiar with it? Each type a whole new season. Catagorizing a thing beyond words waters it down.
Love can be slow and sweet like honey. It can be flames of fire. It can burn you and warm you together. It could be low embers you sit around long after flames have left. Love can cool you, someones touch can calm you. Love lights sparks in the dullest places and brings butterflies or wild passion.
If one can fall in love with love it self I have done so.
• lighting a scented candle & reading curled up in an armchair
• browsing the bookshelves at your favourite library while the rain is knocking on the windows
• making a hearty butternut squash soup & baking an apple pie for dessert
• drinking vanilla tea while being wrapped up in a cozy blanket
• reading russian classics as the fresh autumn air is blowing in from the open window
• taking a long walk after it has rained, smelling the air rich in oxygen, watching the leaves in autumn colours fall & listening to them crunching at each step
• having a warm hot chocolate & leaving a stain of your burgundy lipstick on the edge of the cup
• wearing your favourite turtlenecks & oversized sweaters under a long wool coat
• visiting a museum with your secret lover, holding hands and enjoying the art in the silence of the old galleries
• sitting in a small café, drinking warm coffee & looking outside at the pouring rain, pulling the sleeves of your knit to protect your palms from the hot cup
• listening to dark, romantic classical music as you sit in front of the fireplace, watching the flames dance & crackle
• writing letters & poetry onto thick, cream paper, black ink staining your fingertips as you feverishly try to find the right words & expressions
• taking a bite of bitter yet sweet dark chocolate & a sip of high tannin red wine as you read plays aloud with friends, cooped up inside while it is storming
hello! I’ve spent way too long curating spotify playlists instead of studying for exams so I figured I’d at least share them:
an unnecessarily pretentious and dramatic dark academia playlist
you’re making breakfast with the love of your life on a beautiful sunday morning and everything is finally okay
evil sexy villain making evil sexy plans
really pissed-off punk playlist to overthrow the government to
sitting in your room and reliving your angsty emo phase
it’s the middle of summer and you’re laying outside on the lawn and staring up at the sky, no thoughts, no responsibility
getting horribly reminiscent and sad about the fact that you will never be nine years old again
i don’t know how better to describe this than just ‘Dad Music’
another dark academia playlist, but this one’s less pretentious and more fun
it’s raining at 1am and everything just feels sad and horrible
sea shanties to shake ur ass to
a playlist for hopeless romantics creating daydream scenarios in their heads
feel free to rb this and add your own!!
“Beatrice, look at this!” Ava holds up a hat for her to inspect. It’s a hat, navy blue, with the words ‘Women want me, fish fear me’ sewn neatly across the front of it. Beatrice bites back the smile that threatens to spread across her face.
“That certainly fits you,” she says, because it does.
“Look, I found one for you, too,” Ava says, digging around in a pile of similar-looking hats. She pulls another one out, this one a dark red color and slightly more raggedy than the first, and Beatrice squints to read the worn text sewn across the top.
‘Cooler than you,’ it reads, with a cartoonish printing of a pair of sunglasses directly underneath. The smile tugs at her mouth again and this time Beatrice isn’t able to smother it completely. Ava looks entirely too pleased about that.
Beatrice says, charmed against her will, “I’m not too sure that’s my style.”
