Chapter 0: The Guardian

Core has been walking in that hollow dimension for quite some time, their sole company being the echo of their footsteps on the immaculate ground of that ever winding space, before they decided to call for a halt.  They had no doubts left, this place was dead empty. They had really found a timeline that cannot be accessed from anywhere in the multiverse… Well physically at least.

“I might be the first one to be here.” They thought aloud, a glimpse of excitement in their voice, although received by none but their ears.

Many thoughts seemed to rush through them at once: What use could this place be for? And how could they exploit it for the greater good? They could use it as a safe house for the people bound to die from a Genocide Run… Or a way to contain hazardous threats. So many possibilities this place hosted that they felt like they still had a heart and it was pounding against their chest.

They felt surreal. The way here wasn't easy, that was for sure. But despites all the suffering they endured, Core strangely felt at peace. They held no regrets, no sadness… Only hope.

Smiling at themself, they continued to walk while putting order in the river of thoughts that rushed through them. While still in their pondering, they came across a very odd spectacle.

“Huh?”

Their surprised tone was greeted by a most queer display: Right in front of them stood a range of doors, rising without a wall to hold them, all having the same size, but never the same frame or handle or even color. In addition, they seemed to go on and on without being able to catch the end of the gallery in their sight.

What was the meaning of this? How come such a hidden place would have an arrangement of wooden doors standing neatly on their own?

Their curiosity got the better of them, despite their hyper-awareness of the multiverse, there were places, like this timeline, they still had trouble perceiving. Who knows where those doors could lead to? Maybe another place they couldn't properly see!

Their grey childish form approached one of the doors slowly, raising their arm to its round dark blue handle, it was cold to the touch… As they were about to twist it a stern and hard and massive voice from behind made them jump.

“I would advise caution in handling that.”

Their pale figure turned to face the newcomer. They were so deep in thoughts that they hadn't realized that someone entered this realm!

He didn't look human, but had the same silhouette. He wore a white hood falling into a cloak, streaks of red on its right ends and of blue on its left ones. Under it was a grey shirt and brown jeans separated by a golden belt. Red blue and gold ribbons decorated his black boots.

His face, which was completely shadowy, had no feature but his eyes, which were matching his style: The right one was red and the left one was blue, but both looked penetrating and seemed to look deep into them.

They noticed that some of his clothes were a bit torn, and he had an axe and sword hung on his back, betraying his familiarity with battle.

“Oh! Hello!”

Core greeted him, but he only nodded as an answer. He asked in a deep voice:

“How did you find this place?”

“Oh… It's a bit of a long story…” Core answered quietly, still unsure if that stranger was a friend or a foe.

“I can tell” He calmly said, “Your presence feels quite atypical. I can see you and talk to you, yet it feels like you're not here… Or actually, that you're a part of here… And everywhere… How odd. I assume that's how you found this place.”

Core was slightly taken aback. How could he tell what they were?

“Don’t worry, I mean no harm. I was just curious. In three millennia you're the first person to find this place, besides me of course.” The stranger told them, his voice becoming warmer.

Three millennia!? He was old enough to know this place for three thousand years!? How many more surprises this individual held!?

“Are you perhaps the inhabitant of this world?” Core asked with interest.

“Not really. I merely use it to hide when my presence isn't needed in the multiverse. Although I came from it, I do not own it.”

“Who are you?”

Core asked this last question without thinking, their curiosity grew too impatient, and the words left their mouth before realizing, but they didn't care. They wanted to know who this mysterious monster was living alone in a confined timeline.

“I could give you my name, but I assume from your face that you'll be left very unsatisfied.”

“Mhm” A cheeky grin on their face, Core nodded enthusiastically. They were eager to hear his words.

“I am what you could call...a guardian of order. Not of destruction, nor of creation. But making sure the balance between the two stays in equilibrium."

"So you protect AUs from threats?"

"Yes.... And no.”

Seeing the child’s puzzled expression he thought for a moment before knowing what to say.

"Creation is something that must be ensured in continuity. In short, let's take a single world as an example. New generations must be born, new crops harvested and new cities built to preserve global peace.

“But let's pretend some crops got infected by some disease that can be passed to the people eating them. These crops must be destroyed to preserve the said global peace.

"Unfortunately, such a concept is so complex that often people disagree about when destruction is needed and when it's not. And of course, there are still greedy buffoons who simply care for themselves and send this balance to the trash.

"I make sure that when people mess with this balance, I teach them, by any means possible, to leave it be. But at a multiversal scale.”

"But where were you when multiple timelines got destroyed because of Genocide Runs!?" Core exclaimed suddenly.

"Such events do not compromise multiversal stability. Destruction of mere timelines is like removing a sand piece from the ocean. However if such destruction were to spread across the multiverse. That's when I must interfere.”

"Isn't it hypocritical to choose who to save and to not to like that?" Core asked, the distress clearly visible in their voice.

“Hypocritical or not, this isn't my purpose. I have no rights to interfere in AUs like that or else... Let's just say that the consequences are not worth it.”

Seeing that Core still had a severe expression on their face, he sighed in defeat before saying, a hint of sadness heard in his voice:

“Listen, It’s not that I don’t want to help those in need but… Think of me like a program. A program that makes sure that the balance of the multiverse stays stable. But that program can’t activate itself unless said balance is endangered.”

“Oh, I see… Kinda like how an antivirus program can’t work unless it detects a virus!”

“Exactly.”

“But isn’t it distressing to know you can’t help many people that need to be saved!? That so many lives were lost even if you had the strength to save them!?”

The warrior looked at the little childish figure, an ancient pain clearly visible in his mismatched eyes. Slowly, as if the word came out with difficulty, he responded:

“I…try to console myself by saying that saving them doesn't necessarily mean doing them just justice.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, imagine that you saved someone from a difficult situation that could have claimed their life. They would be safe, but what if they become an evil person in the future and ends up performing atrocious deeds, while your action was driven by good intent, was altogether a good deed?”

Core thought of his words for seconds… While they could see the reasoning in them, they weren't fully convincing.

“So what you're saying is, you never know what the consequences of an act, good or bad, could be, right?”

Seeing his nod, they asked, a little smile on their face.

“But isn't that just overthinking it? When you do your best to be a good person, can you really blame yourself for unforeseen events?”

The warrior’s eyes dilated in astonishment, and, to Core's surprise, had a small chuckle that lasted for a moment. He had no visible mouth, yet Core guessed he was smiling at them when saying.

“Maybe… But when you're three thousand years old, you don't find yourself short on thinking time.”

In front of his unexpected answer, Core couldn't help but giggle at their turn.

“I can't argue with that. My name is Frisk, but you can call me Core. How about you? Do you have a name to go by mister program guardian?”

He looked at their dark eyes, and spoke a word he himself never thought he'd heard for a very very extended amount of time.

“Nitham. My name is Nitham.”

Not sure how long I can pretend I am good. I may have crossed my mental limit and not realized it. Two days ago I found myself opening the window of my hotel's room and almost climbed it to jump... Until I realized what I was doing and stopped myself... I can't think of how much pain that would cause the ppl around me, so I try to stay sane and not think of THAT again but pressure is growing more and more... People leaving me, people wronging me, and pressure from work. Idk what else can I say? I feel a little betrayed by some, longing for others, pressure from my kin and their lack of acknowledging my situation doesn't help. In short, I feel like I'm trying to hold onto a small statue of sand... Whataver i do, it's falling apart, and I'm slowly saying "what's the point of keeping it together now?" and slowly wanting to let go more and more. I try to keep up for me, for my friend, for my religion... But until when?

Onwards we ride

After some good thinking, I came to a conclusion. I've had kinda enough of suffering and tormenting my mind, so I thought maybe having a good talk with myself. Through it I decided that, even if it was hard to admit it, it was time to let go of some people, and of old pains. Yes, I've been hurt, and I did some mistakes in the past cuz of it, and I don't justify them. But now? I know I'm fighting, and so I'm sure it'll hurt (like every war does) but samewise, I know it's for a good cause and reason, so I'm ready to smile at the pain and take it out, and find peace in my endeavors. And yes, I'll miss some people, but I gotta accept I'm not responsible for everyone's fate, so I'm happy I got to share a part of my life with them. There's no denying that it's hard to accept the pain, especially when pressured, but it's the only way to let go and move on from it. And accept that ur trying to do better. Be at peace that rn, ur a better person, and u wanna fight for good...
