“Your uncle is so hot.”

Glancing up from your book, you frown at Alina as she slumps herself down on the sun lounger next to you. Looking around in puzzlement, you soon find your three uncles gathered around the barbecue with your dad. Your nose wrinkles at the thought of your friend finding any of them attractive. Nevertheless, your curiosity gets the better of you, and you ask,

“Which one?”

“The one that’s looking at us right now.” She looks down hurriedly, a blush coating her cheeks. Your frown deepens, and you scour the yard in search of anyone looking your way.

Then your eyes meet Aleksander’s. The corner of his mouth quirks into a half smile, and your stomach flips. You offer him a shy smile of your own, before forcing yourself to laugh as you turn back to your friend.

“He’s not my uncle.” She looks up at you with confusion in her eyes.

“But Harry called him Uncle Sasha.” You smile.

“All my cousins call him Uncle Sasha.” You shake your head. “Aleksander Morozov - he’s one of dad’s business partners.”

You had never called him Uncle Sasha, and you had always argued that the nickname was for the younger kids, after all, he wasn’t actually your uncle.

“So he’s rich too?”

You give her a scolding look, but she simply rubs her hands together conspiratorially which draws a more genuine laugh from you. Then she unties the strings at the back of her bikini top. Your jaw drops.

“Alina, what are you-“

She only giggles in response.

“Rub some lotion on me will you?”

She then winks and lies down on her front. Giving both you and Aleksander a clear view of her ass, and the tiny triangle of fabric she’s wearing as bottoms. You don’t move for a solid three seconds, too astounded by what she’s asking for - and why.

Squirting some sun lotion onto your hands, you feel a little self conscious that you’ve been drawn into this plan of Alina’s to attract Aleksander’s attention. You can feel his eyes on you, and you do your best not to look at him.

Instead, you focus on smoothing your hands over Alina’s soft skin. Of course Aleksander would look over at her. You move your thumbs in circles as you rub the lotion in, almost massaging her, and her hips shift slightly.

She lifts her head up, turning towards you.

“You should put a little under my waistband. Just in case.” Your mind is far too scrambled with embarrassment and anxiety to notice her glancing over to meet Aleksander’s gaze.

Smearing more lotion on your hands, you carefully lift up the waistband of her bottoms and run your hands along the length of her waist. You pray that your parents, or any other family member for that matter, aren’t looking over at this point. You’re consumed by these thoughts, until a shadow passes over Alina’s body, bringing you back to reality.

Then you hear a warm, silky voice say,

“Good afternoon ladies.” You look up and meet Aleksander’s dark eyes.

From your position on the sun lounger, you’re eye level with his crotch, and you know he sees your gaze flicker down briefly. Alina sits up with a dazzling smile.

“Thanks, love. Will you do me up?”

You fumble with the strings as Alina directs her attention to Aleksander.

“Mr Morozov, isn’t it?”

“Yes, and you must be Alina.” She brings one of her knees up to her chest, curling her arms around the folded limb as she grins.

“You’ve heard of me?”

“Only good things I assure you.”

Your cheeks warm as you remember you had briefly told Aleksander that you’d invited Alina over. It had only been a passing conversation - as all your conversations with Aleksander were.

He turns his attention back to you.

“Would you like some help with that milaya?” He asks, gesturing down to the bottle of lotion that you’re currently fiddling with. “We wouldn’t you to get burnt either, now would we?”

You blink up at him, and he shakes his head slightly with widened eyes as if he were miming the response he wanted from you. You hurry to shake your head in response, before adding a small,

“Please.”

He settles on the lounger next to you, his long fingers curling around the bottle and you turn to face Alina so that Aleksander can apply the lotion to your back. Alina pulls a face that shows you what she thinks of you not being brave enough to lie down on the lounger - completely at Aleksander’s mercy. You stick your tongue out in response.

Aleksander observes the encounter quietly as he smooths the lotion over his palms.

“I gather that the two of you are close?” He says, and prevents you from answering as his cool fingers rub over your shoulders. Alina answers him instead.

“We’ve known each other since high school.”

Aleksander’s hands are large, and feel so much better than yours must have felt to Alina. He takes his time, running over the length of your back. You hardly breathe when his fingers dip under your waistband, and you wonder if he likes what he sees.

Aleksander’s fingers trace along the curve of your spine, and you squirm. Alina knows you better than you know yourself. So, when she had seen you look at Aleksander she knew you wanted him. You can see the mischief in her eyes as Aleksander continues to touch you. She looks sickeningly pleased with herself as she picks up the book you were reading.

It’s only Aleksander’s voice that pulls you away from her gaze.

“Turn around milaya, let me do your front.”

“Oh no, you don’t have to, I can do-“

“Nonsense. Let me.”

Aleksander’s tone leaves no room for argument, and Alina looks thrilled at the prospect. So, on shaky legs you turn and face Aleksander. He gives you a fond smile that makes your embarrassment seem worthwhile. That is until he puts his hands back on you.

He smooths over your neck, fingers curling ever so slightly around your throat, and you know he sees the glazed look in your eyes.

“You’ve missed a spot.” Alina says lightly, and you shoot her a glance. She only grins at you, turning a page with a delicate finger.

Aleksander pays her no mind as he slides his fingers under the straps of your bikini top, and you try your hardest not to squirm. His touch is featherlight against your collarbones, and you want to arch into him.

He squeezes more lotion onto his palm which he then spreads over your stomach. You jump at the contact and a small gasp leaves your lips. Aleksander looks at you, there’s concern in his eyes, but he raises a brow as if he’s scolding you for squirming.

“Sorry. Just cold.” You mumble. The corner of his mouth quirks into a smirk.

In a few smooth motions, Aleksander has covered your thighs in lotion, and you hold you breath for the entire time. When he’s done he looks back at your face, no doubt taking in your wide eyes and rapidly expanding chest.

Alina grins, leaning over your lounger with a towel, before passing it to Aleksander.

“Say thank you to Uncle Sasha.” She teases.

His dark eyes meet yours, and your cheeks are aflame. You’ve never called him that. But the words are right there on the tip of your tongue, your lips already parted to say it aloud. Then your mom calls out your name. You sigh in relief and scramble up away from them both.

“I’ll be right back.” You tell them, knowing it’s a lie.

You spend the rest of the day avoiding them both.

»»---------------------â–ș

It gets worse from that moment onwards.

Your crush on Aleksander had always been a secret - it was a private fantasy of yours that you never even dreamed of acting upon.

After the encounter during your family barbecue, Aleksander doesn’t stop plaguing your life.

You’re half asleep, drinking your morning tea in your parents’ kitchen, enjoying the peace before you sister and her children arrive to wreak havoc on the house. As you lower the mug from your lips you nearly choke on the liquid already halfway down your throat. Aleksander raises a brow at you as he waltzes into the kitchen with messy bed head, wearing a loose T-shirt and shorts.

“Aleksander, what are you doing here?”

“Good morning to you too milaya.” He says breezily as he opens up the cupboard beside you to pull out some bread. You watch, in something akin to disbelief, as he makes toast.

Why does he look more comfortable in your family home than you do?

“Did you sleep well?” He asks you. No you most certainly did not. Every time your eyes fluttered closed, ready to sleep, the feeling of Aleksander’s hands gliding down your body in strong firm motions haunted you. You decide to deflect,

“You haven’t answered my question.” He raises a brow at you as you sit at the kitchen island. You open the tub of cereal and pour yourself a bowlful. “What are you doing here?”

He glances down at the plate in front of him, as he spreads jam over his toast.

“I’m making toast.” He lifts his eyes up to meet yours, and there’s a playful twinkle in their depths. Your mouth parts. You don’t know how to respond. Of course you knew he was capable of being charming and funny, you had seen him play with your cousins, nephews, and nieces.

But he had always seemed so reserved around you. Your conversations had been limited to small talk, that you had replayed over in your mind for hours afterwards, chastising yourself for being so painfully shy.

Aleksander seems to take pity on you, and fills the silence with a more genuine answer.

“Your father and I were working on some contracts, late into the night, and he offered me the guest room. What time did you arrive?”

“Just after midnight.”

His brows crinkle, then he nods,

“I must have just missed you.” You fiddle with your spoon, spinning the pieces of cereal around in the bowl.

You don’t know how you would have reacted meeting Aleksander on the landing as you made your way to your room last night. Perhaps you would have slept better knowing he was in the house. Maybe you would have slept worse.

You throw a spoonful of cereal into your mouth, trying to think of something to say once you’ve finished munching.

“Did you finish the contracts?” He nods before he glances at the clock.

“I’ll be going in to submit them soon.”

“Today?” He nods again, slowly this time. “But it’s a Saturday.” He laughs softly, and you almost melt into a puddle on the floor.

“It won’t be for long milaya. I’ll back before you know it.”

“You’ll be back?”

“Your mother invited me to dinner.”

Oh fantastic.

Aleksander finishes his breakfast quicker than you, mostly because you spend more time playing with your food than eating it. You usually don’t eat much for breakfast, but in your nervousness you’d poured a ridiculously large bowl for yourself.

You hear the floorboards creak as he makes his way upstairs, and hear the guest room door swing open. There’s small rustling sounds, then he walks across the landing and into the bathroom. The door shuts, and you hear the lock click behind him. It’s only once you hear the shower water running that you breath a sigh of relief, and feel free to move around your own house.

He’s fully dressed when he emerges from the bathroom. A crisp white shirt which clings to his body in all the right places, dark formal pants and grey socks. Dark hair slicked back, but not too much, so you can still dream about ruffling it with your fingers. He’s the picture of perfection.

You suddenly feel very silly standing outside in the hallway wearing your pyjamas, with a bundle of clothes and a towel tucked against your chest. He acknowledges you with a nod and a small smile as he passes you in the hallway, before assuring you that he no longer needs the bathroom.

The entire room smells like Aleksander. You had noticed the small toiletries bag nestled under his arm, but you had assumed it just had simple necessities like his toothbrush and toothpaste.

Not his shower gel, or shampoo. The room is still warm from his shower, and you want to bask in the warmth of Aleksander’s scent. You wonder if this is what his bathroom smells like. Then you shove those thoughts away violently.

You don’t care what Aleksander’s bathroom smells like.

You don’t.

»»---------------------â–ș

Aleksander was right, he was back before you knew it.

The weather isn’t as hot as the day of the barbecue, but the shorts and tank top you’re wearing today seemed appropriate. But as your youngest nephew tugs on the front of your top you realise your mistake. Luckily Aleksander scoops the boy up, rescuing you from disaster.

You smile gratefully at him, pretending not to notice how his eyes flicker down as you adjust the straps of your tank top.

“Thank you.” You say quietly.

“You’re welcome.” Then he turns to the child in his arms. “Now young man, we don’t take a lady’s clothes off without her permission. Isn’t that right milaya?” Your cheeks burn and you can’t respond, then you manage to fumble out a small nod.

“Very right.”

You keep yourself busy for the rest of the day, and away from Aleksander. But he seems impossible to escape.

When your mom tells you that the family is going out for dinner, and that Aleksander is invited, you breathe a sigh of relief. At least there’s no chance of you being left alone with Aleksander. So, you dress up nicely and wait by your car.

Because he’s a perfect gentleman, Aleksander helps your sister get her kids into your car, and gives you a small smile before he joins your parents in their car. Your heart is still pounding as you pull out outside the restaurant.

“Reservation under Morozov?” You say to the waiter, and he nods immediately and guides you over to a table. Everyone else is already seated. Meaning there’s only a few chairs left, namely one in front of Aleksander, and one next to Aleksander. You hesitate. Which one will be easiest for you to function at?

The decision is taken from you as your sister sits down in front of Aleksander. Meaning you take the seat beside him. He smiles at you as you sit, and warmth tingles through your body.

He spends the entire evening being ridiculously charming, and ridiculously attractive, and ridiculously funny. Aleksander doesn’t seem like a man with a sense of humour, but he’s often so quick witted it startles you. You find yourself laughing far too much at his jabs and remarks.

So, by the time you return home, you’re incredibly annoyed with him. And yourself. But mostly him. How dare he be so attractive and unattainable?

All you want to do is get into bed and escape this entire day. You hope that Aleksander will be driving home tonight, but you doubt it.

Then your parents ask you to join them for a drink in the living room, and you can’t refuse them. Aleksander sits in the armchair usually frequented by you. The armchair that you used to curl up on and read until your parents forced you to go to sleep.

The evening light casts a glow around him, and you swallow a large amount of wine in an attempt to stop thinking about him. You’re unsuccessful. As your parents and sister talk amongst themselves, all you can think about is Aleksander.

Your sister is the first one to leave, with her small gaggle of children you all know she needs the rest. Then your parents head up to bed. Leaving you alone with Aleksander.

Neither of you talk. He simply watches you, and you continue to drink as a means to distract yourself from the fact that he’s watching you. It’s only as you’re reaching for the rest of the bottle that he speaks, leaning forward to rest his hand over yours.

“I think you’ve had enough tonight milaya.”

“Oh you do?” He raises a brow at your tone, and heat pools between your legs.

You wonder what would happen if he let you continue drinking. Whether it would give you confidence to finally sit in his lap and kiss him senseless. Or better yet, to kneel at his feet, undo his trousers, and pull out his co-

“Fuck!” You hiss quietly, pressing your hand against your face as you realise where your thoughts had been going. Squeezing your eyes shut tightly, you nod enthusiastically as you agree with him. “I’ve had enough.”

“Would you like me to help you upstairs?” You nod, your eyes still closed in a dizzying mixture of shame and arousal.

“Please.”

His hand is on the small of your back as the two of you head upstairs, and you can feel his eyes on you. The warmth of his palm soaks through your dress, and you wish you could feel his hands all over you. You stumble slightly as you reach the door to your bedroom, and Aleksander catches you. His body presses yours against the doorframe, your chest flush with his. His eyes flicker down to your lips.

For a moment you think he’s going to kiss you, and your mind is filled with thoughts of him driving the air from your lungs with a searing kiss. Of him driving you hard against the wall, then carrying you to your bed to fuck you.

Aleksander takes your chin between his fingers, looking deep into your eyes. Anticipation claws at your skin, you need him so badly it hurts. He leans in and your eyes close, eager for him take.

Then he turns his head, and presses his lips to your cheek. The ghost of a kiss that makes you whimper. He closes his eyes, as if he’s memorising the sound. Or steeling himself to resist it. You don’t know which is worse.

“Sleep well milaya.”

He steps away, and you’re struggling to catch your breath. You stare at him with wide eyes.

He’s quiet as he withdraws himself from your space, and turns away quickly. You’re filled with the sudden need to make him ache. The same way he makes you ache. Your voice is soft, but you know it carries its way down the hallway to his ears.

“Goodnight Uncle Sasha.”

He stops still. He turns, but you’ve already slipped into your bedroom and the door is shut.

could you write an angst thing where reader finds out sirius only started dating her for a bet but she doesn’t take him back? like he admits to what happened and says he actually ended up falling for her but she decides to leave him anyways? idk it just pisses me off when the reader is so forgiving like i would never recover from that 💀

Liss is my Hufflepuff OC, lol. Hope you like it! Thanks for the ask♡.

Ê•â€ąÌ«ÍĄâ€ąÊ•â€ąÌ«ÍĄâ€ąÊ”â€ąÌ«ÍĄâ€ąÊ”â€ąÌ«ÍĄâ€ąÊ•â€ąÌ«ÍĄâ€ąÊ”â€ąÌ«ÍĄâ€ąÊ•â€ąÌ«ÍĄâ€ąÊ•â€ąÌ«ÍĄâ€ąÊ”â€ąÌ«ÍĄâ€ąÊ”â€ąÌ«ÍĄâ€ąÊ•â€ąÌ«ÍĄâ€ąÊ”â€ąÌ«ÍĄâ€ąÊ”

When you woke up that morning, you didn't have any plans to eavesdrop on your two best friends' conversation.

It just sort of happened.

The long, old and dusty tapestry covered your entire figure, from head to toe. A clammy hand was pressed against your mouth, as you listened to a conversation that was supposed to be private. The worn material was see-through enough to let you figure out who was who, and if their voices weren't enough, you recognized the yellow and red jumpers.

“Please tell me you are joking, Lilly. Please.”

“Liss, you can’t say a thing, less to y/n.”

Your stomach twisted in anxiety; They were hiding something, a secret.

“Lilly,” Liss spoke again, she was mad, you could always figure it out by how her accent deepened. “This isn't fair.”

“I know it isn't.” Lilly agreed with her, mirroring the other girl's frustration. “I overheard it from a conversation between James and Sirius.”

Your stomach made another painful jolt at those words, your boyfriend, Sirius, was hiding something, and not only your two best friends know, James, Lilly’s boyfriend, knew too. The loud click of the clock hung up on the stone wall was all you could hear for a few minutes, minutes that felt like hours.

“I'm going to tell her,” Liss said, scoffing loudly. “This farce needs to stop.”

“Hey!” Lilly grabbed her hand before the Hufflepuff girl could walk away. “Believe me, there’s nothing more I want than to tell her what's going on.”

“And then?!”

“It's not our responsibility, Liss.”

“But as her best friends—”

“Liss! Sirius is the one who needs to be sincere about this!”

So he was hiding something. The nauseous feeling only gained weight inside your stomach, all the way to your chest. Your lungs struggled for air, the whole hallway felt suffocating, and you could taste the vomit in your mouth.

“He’s not going to! He’s going to keep lying to her! Because that's what he's been doing the past three months!” Liss practically shouted.

Three months, three months ago Sirius asked you on a date.

Three months ago he kissed you next to Blake Lake.

Three months ago he asked you to be his girlfriend.

“What do you want us to do then?” It was Lilly’s turn to shout, swinging her hands in the air.

“For Helga’s sake, for being Head Girl you are such an idiot! We have to tell her Sirius is only dating her over a stupid bet he had with the boys! I don't give a fuck if it’s not our responsibility! She’s our best friend!”

And with those three words, your whole world shattered, just like your heart.

Over a bet.

One of them stormed away, quickly followed by the other, but it didn't matter much, all you could think about was those three words.

Over a bet.

You released a breath you didn't know you were holding. The world felt distant as if someone used a spell to stop time, even the seconds felt slow; The tears were silent but the thoughts inside your head were messy and loud. The anxiety, the shock, the anger, the sadness, everything was mixed, combined into this big, green monster that threatened your satiny.

With shaky steps, you walked towards Gryffindor’s common room, knowing that's where your beloved boyfriend was going to be. And he was, leaning against the stairs as he talked with Remus.

“So I told Prongs— Oh hey, doll.” He smiled the second he looked at you, a smile that faded when he noticed your teary cheeks, your puffy eyes, and how you carried your broken heart in the palm of your hand. “What's wrong babe?”

He sounded worried, but you knew better. It was a lie, just like everything else had been, for the past three months.

Remus gasped in shock when your hand collided with Sirius's pale cheek. The whole world froze again, but this time the sadness and anxiety were far gone, there was only anger.

“What the fuck—” Sirius started, but you quickly stopped him, pushing him. You were never the one for violence, but this time it just felt right.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” You asked through hiccups. “A bet? That's all I am?”

His grey eyes melted, you could read the guilt, but it was fake, it had to be, just like his love was, fake. Everything was fake. All the kisses, all the dates, all the late-night conversations, everything.

“I—” He said, stuttering, glancing up at you with his doe, breathtaking eyes. “I'm sorry.”

“I'm sorry.” He repeated, biting his lip.

“Over a bet.” You hissed, nostrils fluttering with rage. “And for what? To boost your pathetic ego? To prove you can pull every girl you want?”

“I didn't—” Sirius choked, with his own words, with his lies. “I tried to call down the bet, I promise.” He promised, just like he promised he loved you on your second date, holding your hand, stargazing. “I tried to when I realized I was falling in love with you.”

In love, those sweet words only fueled your anger.

Remus, who looked beyond embarrassed, stepped away, slowly, silently.

“And you.” Your attention was now on the tall boy, and he shrunk in his place. “You knew. You fucking knew!”

“I'm sorry,” Remus muttered, blushing, even the tip of his ears were crimson. “I tried to talk to them about how wrong it was—”

“Save it for later.” You snapped, flipping him off. “I wouldn't be surprised if you started dating Liss over a bet too.”

His honey eyes widened at your words. “N—no!” He replied, shaking his head. “I promise!”

“Sweetheart, please,” Sirius spoke again, diverting your attention from Remus who used it as an opportunity to run away from the catastrophe.

“Don't call me that!” The tears made their way again down your cheeks. “Don't ever speak to me again.”

“y/n, please.” Sirius pleaded, standing up. “I love you, I do. I know it was wrong, I know it shouldn't have done that.” He continued, word after word, he rambled, about how much he loved you, about how hard he fell for you, about how special you were.

“I love you.”

He was crying. The tears were like shiny diamonds, staining the marble stairs.

“I love you.” He whispered again, as the remorse and shame coated him.

Sirius shouted your name, as you walked away, away from him, from his love, from his lies. Back facing the man who fooled you. You heard his pleas, his promises, but those were lies too.

Your first relationship was over, dramatically, it even felt like a novel. That night, you laid in bed, safely wrapped under your duvet, crying your heart out, over a bet, over what could've been.

I have a few characters in mind.

do authors cry when they kĂźll the best character? or do they smile, laugh and have a cup of tea with Satan?

I love lots of good, heartbreaking, absolutely traumatising angst with a smol fluff scene at the end. LOTS of angst, mind you. But major character death? :,) WHYYY

Uncle Stephen

“It is only for ten days,” you bargained with Stephen, chasing him around the room as he tried his hardest to ignore you. “I am talking to you, Strange.” You finally raised your tone, standing before him and forcing him to put his book down and look at you.

“The Sanctum is no place for a child,” his response was short and generical, giving no insight into his desire or lack thereof to be around a toddler. His eyes returned to his book as he stepped aside, continuing his meditative stroll through the room. You, however, did not see it like that, reading between the lines.

“So, what will we do when we have children?” The question came out in a tone more serious than you wanted it to, causing the doctor to stop in his tracks and look back at you.

“That is not something we need to concern ourselves with yet, is it?” His eyes scrutinised your face before moving again, continuing the relentless pacing. It was a delicate topic, that of children. You were somewhat on the same page. You wanted children eventually. The day, however, had somehow been frozen in time in Stephen’s mind, continuously seeing the eventually as long from now while you counted every passing year as a step closer. Then the engagement had come earlier this year, and the promise to share the rest of your lives together had been spoken into reality. Having children had suddenly become more of a desire in your mind, yet Stephen seemed to be unphased by the change.

“She is smart and well-behaved, and I already told my sister she can stay with us, so you’ll deal with it.” You answered before walking out of the room, frustrated at his lack of interest in your niece. Stephen had met her only once before on her first birthday; your sister living far away meant you rarely saw them. She was thankfully moving back to New York but that also meant she needed to look for an apartment and deal with the moving. Hence her request for you to take care of the little girl in the meantime. You had agreed instantly, not thinking Stephen would have any problem with it, but he had refused straightaway and dismissed the topic every time you asked about it.

The day of the little girl’s arrival came quicker than expected. Stephen had been gone for the last couple of days on a mission with Wong and Peter, meaning that you had met with your sister alone to pick her up. She had invited you to brunch, and you had discussed some of the wedding plans and any needs little Cecilia had. Cece was a lively ray of sunshine who was starting to put her first sentences together and loved horses. There was no way Stephen’s heart would not melt as soon as he saw her.

Eventually, at the end of your brunch, your sister handed you Cece’s bag and gave her a goodbye kiss. The little girl waved goodbye as her mom reminded her that she would be staying with her aunt for a couple of days. You and Cece went on with your day, eventually finding your way back home to the Sanctum. Wong had helped you bring some things she would need to sleep into one of the many empty rooms of the enormous property, making it easy for you to set her up.

After such an eventful day, she fell asleep, giving you a minute to go to the kitchen and make yourself some late lunch/dinner. As you finished preparing your sandwich, you heard the familiar sound of a portal opening behind you; turning around to meet your sweaty and dirty fiance with a smile. “Hello there, handsome,” you gave him a dashing smile as he moved towards you, his hands cupping your cheeks into a passionate kiss.

You broke the kiss catching some air, and gave him a preoccupied smile. He was usually only this passionate when something dangerous had happened, and he was terrified of losing you. “Is everything okay? I-“ you tried to speak, but the sound of another portal distracted you. Through it, Peter and Wong came out also looking pretty rough. “Oh god, are you guys okay?” you asked, moving away from Stephen, who stood there exhausted.

Wong gave you a comforting look, but you noticed a tension-filled silence in the room. “Peter, are you okay?” you asked as the boy looked down with a hurt expression.

“Oh, he is excellent. He almost got himself killed and ruined our mission, but he is perfectly fine.” Stephen answered for him, forcing you to give the doctor a fulminating look. Peter looked regretful enough; bashing him now would not help.

“That is enough, Stephen. I will make everyone dinner. Go shower.” You spoke to the three men in an authoritative voice. The spiderboy spent so much time in the Sanctum that he had clothes and an assigned room. Peter and Wong left swiftly, going into their rooms to wash up, but Stephen stayed there, knowing you would want to talk to him. As soon as you were alone again, you spoke, “You cannot talk to him that way. He is just a kid. He is trying his best.”

“He almost got himself killed. He wants to help everyone, save everyone, but he does not see he will end up killing himself like this.” Stephen’s words were filled with frustration. He worried for Peter's safety; you knew that was the truth. He had decided to let him die once before. He could not make the same decision again. “I have watched him die, and he does not understand that. Someday I won’t be there by his side, and he will actually get himself killed.”

Just as you thought, he was not mad at the boy for the way he behaved. He was just scared of losing him. It was hard to keep in mind all the time that Stephen had to live with the burden of knowledge. You wondered how many times he had seen you go and how he felt about it, but he never wanted to speak of it. “You are doing your best, and he is doing his best. It is all we can ask for,” you finally answered, inviting him to lay his head against yours and embracing him in a tight hug. “I love you, you know? We all do, and we are so grateful to you for protecting us, but you cannot always keep us safe, and that is okay.” Your left hand caressed his back, hoping to soothe him slightly.

Suddenly the sound of the baby monitor interrupted your hug as Cece woke up, startled by your absence. “Oh, when did she get here?” The doctor stiffened in your arms, unhappy that you had gone through with your decision.

“A couple of hours ago. Wanna help me check on her?” You asked, breaking the embrace and giving him a hopeful smile.

“I am gonna go shower,” he spoke, tightening his lips and looking away from you. You sighed and walked away, still confused about his dismissiveness. The sounds from the baby monitor suddenly changed as the little girl was no longer alone. Confused, you checked the screen and saw Peter approaching her bed.

“Hello there! Who are you? I am Peter,” the boy spoke, slowly walking towards the sleepy child. “Do you need food?” he asked, and Cece nodded emphatically back, sweetly raising her arms for the boy to pick her up. You watched, amused through the camera, as Stephen left the room, feeling your heart ache from the cuteness.

Peter helped you keep Cece entertained in the kitchen as you made dinner. He told you all about what had happened, and you finally completely understood Stephen’s frustration. The boy had been incredibly reckless, but thankfully nothing bad came of it. Peter was extremely patient with the toddler, who was just around that phase where she asked questions about virtually anything. It was lovely to see them interact. You could not help but imagine how much of an amazing big brother he would have been.

Eventually, Wong joined the three of you, instantly entertained by the little girl running around the kitchen table, singing some non-sensical song. Food was ready shortly after, but Stephen was nowhere to be found. You excused yourself quickly, asking Wong to watch the children so you could look for the grumpy doctor.

You opened your bedroom door carefully, spying your fiance sitting on the bed with his head between his hands. You pressed your lips worriedly, unsure of what to say to make him feel better. “Babe, would you like me to bring you your food here?” You asked careful, understanding how tough these missions were for him.

“Yes, please. That would be great.” He responded, lifting his eyes and giving you a thankful look.

The rest of the afternoon went by quickly as Cece, Peter, and you played with some relics that Wong thought would be appropriate. Eventually, the boy left, and you put Cece to bed, exhausted after such an adventurous day. You checked that the monitor was working properly and went to bed yourself as Stephen was already lying in bed, deep asleep.

You woke up startled, unsure why your alarm had not rung. The bed was empty, and the monitor of Cece’s room was turned off. You tried to turn it on, confused, looking around for your fiance in the bathroom and adjacent office. He was nowhere to be found, and the monitor was not turning on. You decided that looking for Cece was the best decision, scared she had been crying all morning, and you had not heard her.

The sense of urgency in your steps slowly calmed as you heard Stephen’s voice whisper from Cece’s room. You stopped, hesitant to enter and curious to listen to what he said, “finally, Cece, we managed to get you to calm down. I don’t understand how your aunt understands you. It would help if you spoke more clearly.¹

You giggled at the comment, deciding to enter the room. Stephen seemed slightly startled as you knocked on the door’s wood to inform him of your arrival. “Hello there,” you smiled at him as he quickly backed away from the child.

“She was not letting me sleep with her crying and complaining, and it looked like you needed some rest,” he scrambled an excuse, scared you could suspect he could enjoy spending time with a child.

You hummed in agreement, thankful for his help and aware that he would not admit to anything else anyway. “Do you mind looking after her for a little longer? I will make breakfast for the two of you.” You kissed him and waved at Cece, leaving the room before he could argue against it.

The next couple of days were a back and forth between Cece chasing Stephen around every room while he tried his best to ignore her. He would still manage to wake up before you with the excuse that the toddler was whining and play with her, entertaining her with some magic and making her breakfast.

Eventually, he gave up on ignoring her and started answering some of her redundant questions. Cece tried her best to speak clearly to him, but the communication problems were still there. She, for example, struggled to pronounce Stephen, which caused both parties a certain level of frustration.

Eventually, Stephen was called out on a mission again. You kissed him goodbye, and Cece waved at him, saddened. Your fiance tried his best to hold onto his stoic facade as he barely acknowledged the little girl, whispering a quick “goodbye little Lilia, see you tomorrow” as soon as he was sure you could not hear. His heart broke seeing the sad expression of the little child as he left.

Stephen’s mission took longer than expected, taking him the whole week to complete. You had been left alone with Cece to enjoy the blooming spring. Peter had not been allowed to tag along in this mission, so he joined you most afternoons for walks and to play with the girl.

Cece seemed to miss Stephen almost as much as you did, so you took the chance to teach her how to say “uncle Stephen.” It would be a pleasant surprise even if he would not admit it.

Sadly, the ten days went by quicker than expected, and Stephen had yet to return from his mission. You met up with your sister to tour the new apartment and give her the toddler back, promising Cece that uncle Stephen would come to visit her sooner than later.

You were lying on your bed that afternoon, enjoying the newly found silence of the house. It had been a great experience to take care of your niece, and it had given you a ton of baby fever, but you could not help but sigh in relief at the peace. The sound of a portal opening in front of you forced you to sit up and smile, excited to see your fiance again. Stephen walked through the portal and towards you, giving you a soft kiss on the lips, instantly scanning the room for the baby monitor.

“I dropped her off today. She missed you,” you answered the unspoke question. The doctor tried his best to control his expression, but the disappointment in his eyes could not be denied. You caressed his hand, inviting him to sit by your side on the bed, climbing on his lap to stare into his eyes. “You can admit that you enjoyed having her around, you know?” you kissed his nose, cupping his face with your hands, enjoying the long-awaited closeness.

“I barely tolerated it.” He shook his head, closing his eyes and smiling, knowing his secret was out of the bag.

“Why can you not just admit that the Sanctum feels more like a home when a little babbling creature is chasing you around?” you laughed, dramatically laying your head on his shoulder and shaking it.

“I don’t want to get attached,” he responded thoughtfully, forcing you to lift your head and look at him again.

“She is just our niece, babe. She cannot break your heart,” you tried to lighten the mood, hoping he would smile, but he lowered his gaze instead.

“I have enough people to worry about already, you, Peter, Wong. Every decision, everything I do or don’t, I am burdened with the fear that it may hurt you. I cannot get attached, or I will think of little Lilia too.”

“Lilia?” You asked, amused at the funny nickname he had chosen.

“She refuses to say my name right; I shall do the same.” Petty old man, playing games with a little child.

“You don’t need to worry about us, my love. We love you regardless. I don’t want to be a burden in your life,” you spoke softly.

“You are not a burden. I just at times wonder whether the universe would be worth saving if it meant losing you or the kid.” The honesty made his voice softer as the words left his lips like a whisper, ashamed of his admission. “That is also why I have been delaying the ‘children’ conversation. I think I could no longer protect the world once we have children. They would be the only thing that’d matter to me, just them, and our adopted son and you.” He chuckled slightly at his recognition, finally realising that Peter had already become your de facto child. You felt a weight lift from your shoulders as his words brought some explanation to his dismissive behaviour finally.

“I understand
” you exhaled, trying to put your desire aside and understand the stress it would put him in. “I was going to see Cece tomorrow for breakfast if you’d like to join me.” You tried to change the topic.

“I would love that,” he confirmed, giving you a crooked smile. You looked into his eyes and wondered how you would live without seeing a mini version of you and your lover walking around this Sanctum. You would never know whether they would get his beautiful eyes with that little brown spot on the right iris.

You spent the rest of the night cuddling with the doctor, talking about his time away and discussing his excitement to see the little monster tomorrow. The morning after could not come quickly enough as you hoped Cece had not forgotten how to pronounce ‘uncle Stephen.’ In the morning, Stephen went out to buy some pastries to take with you, letting you know that Lilia was a massive fan of chocolate croissants. You shook your head at the information, wondering what other unhealthy foods he had been feeding her for breakfast. He reassured you that he had checked his old introduction to paediatrics book, and 26-month-olds were allowed to eat chocolate croissants.

The two of you arrived at the building at around 11 a.m., ready to see your family. You knocked at the door and were received, disappointingly enough for Stephen, by your sister alone as Cece was still asleep. She had apparently struggled to get used to the new bed the night before. You started catching up as Stephen politely asked about your sister’s moving struggles. Eventually, the commotion of your conversation woke up the little girl, who began to ask for help from the crib.

You exchanged a look with your sister, who offered Stephen to go pick her up. The doctor refused initially, joking nervously that she probably did not even remember him. Your sister thankfully insisted, and he got up eagerly, walking towards the indicated room. The little girl squealed with excitement as soon as she spotted the familiar face, “UNCLE SFEFEN.”

The doctor could not help but chuckle happily, hugging and lifting the toddler who held on tightly to the hug. “Hello, little Cece.”

“Lilia,” she repeated, confused at why he was calling her Cece.

“Lilia it is,” he reassured her, re-entering the room with her and keeping her on his lap.

“They seemed to have bonded,” your sister looked at you entertained, giving you a cheeky smile.

“Seems like it,” you responded, giggling as you observed them interact. The four of you spent almost the entire day together, and by the end of it, both Cece and Stephen were absolutely exhausted, falling asleep on the couch as they watched some cartoon. You had never seen him so soft and sweet with someone that was not you. It was genuinely heartwarming. The comical way Stephen's head had dropped onto the couch's backrest as the little girl laid her head against his side forced you to think of what an amazing dad he would be.

You shook your fiance's shoulder once it was time to leave, waking him up. The goodbyes were prolonged as Stephen had to promise the little girl to come to visit her again. The doctor was equally as saddened by the separation, but finally, after forty-five minutes, you managed to thank your sister and head home. Once the door was closed, the doctor moved to your ear and whispered, “maybe we should start planning on that first baby.”

and now you gave up, after the continuous breakdowns and hating them.

you fucking relented but don't do it again.

but then "what if ?" and you text them first. you hold your breath, goddamn please be nice. and then see all the reasons why they aren't a fit for you. fuck them, you think.

but then you're having fun and then you realise this is a wake up call. wake up. you're gonna talk but will not get attached okay?

you fucking relented, but don't do it again.

please. have mercy.
