Rock Operas: Rocky Horror Show

Rock Operas: Rocky Horror Show

So  "Over at the Frankenstein Place", we find Richard O'Brien, the creator of The Rocky Horror Show. This rock musical with hits including Time Warp, Sweet Transvestite, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me, and I Can Make You A Man has been a crowd favorite ever since it's first appearance as a musical in Royal Court Theatre in Sloane Square, in Chelsea, London.  After only two performances, record producer Jonathan King signed the actors to make a cast recording. From then on, it had 2.960 other performances at the theatre, before branching out to have over 30 productions worldwide.  A movie rendition, called The Rocky Horror Picture Show, really gained popularity for the show, with thousands of people going to see the movie worldwide. Over 30 cast recordings of were produced, and the musical won the 1973 Evening Standard Award for Best Musical, and the 2001 Theatre World Award for Best Musical.  It was nominated for other awards, such as the 1975 Tony Award for Best Lighting Design and the 2001 for the Best Revival of a Musical.

2nd Album Review: 21st Century Breakdown - Green Day

image

Green Day's rock opera and concept album 21st Century Breakdown won a Grammy for Best Rock Album, at the 52nd Grammy Awards, and I can really see why.  The album expresses the discontent and struggles of lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong's life, and the band's view of the 21st century.  It is full of references from the band's lives, and the punk tones mixed with rock riffs and influences really brings this concept album together.  Armstrong's one of a kind voice really supports this albums message and feelings, and it explores political and social aspects of the 21st century.  From the softer, slower tones of 21 Guns to the punk-rock explosion in East Jesus Nowhere, this album breaks down the century we live in through the riffs and vocals of Billie Joe, Mike, and Jason and the drumming of Tre.  Five well earned stars.

If haven't heard any of the album, go listen to East Jesus Nowhere. Great song.

You can have my isolation You can have the hate that it brings You can have my absence of faith You can have my everything Help me Tear down my reason Help me It's your sex I can smell Help me You make me perfect Help me become somebody else

Closer- Nine Inch Nails

This song is from the album The Downward Spiral, which is about a man's descent into madness and ending in suicide.  This particular song is centered around how this man hates himself and escapes his insecurities through "love-making". He is obsessed with the person he is singing to, and views the person as their only connection to life. The album is full of songs with under-lying meanings and darker themes. The way Trent twists the lyrics to create these themes is amazing and improved his music all the more.

Rock Opera: Jesus Christ Superstar

Everything's Alright in this famous rock opera.  With the music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics written by Tim Rice, this was one of the most well-known plays of its time. It follows the story of Jesus and his disciples on the last week of Jesus's life. This play was originally just a recording released in 1970, but developed into a play in 1971, and eventually a movie in 1973.  The play has been performed over 50 times from even before it was authorized to be performed in 1971.  It has won many awards over its span, including the Drama Desk award for Most Promising Composer in 1972, and was nominated for even more awards, including a Tony for Best Original Score. This play has been seen by people all over the world, and continues to remain a favorite in many people's hearts today.

Artist Spotlight: Jimi Hendrix

Purple Haze. Angel. Along the Watchtower. Heard of any of these songs? Well, they were written by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, whose lead singer was none other than Jimi himself. Born in Seattle, Washington, he was raised by his father, with his brother. His first instrument was a one-string ukelele, which he used to learn songs by Elvis. His father bought him his first guitar at age 15, an acoustic guitar, but then at, age 16, his father bought him a white Supro Ozark electric, and after that was stolen, his father bought him a Silvertone Danelectro. He played in many bands before The Jimi Hendrix Experience, including the Velvetones, Curtis Knight and the Squires, and the King Kasuals, and in the Isley Brothers backing band. Hendrix met Linda Keith, Keith Richards Girlfriend, after playing a show in NYC, and soon after met the rest of the experience: Mitch Mitchell and Eric Clapton. They played at the 1967 Monterey Pop festival, and many of their singles, including their cover do Hey Joe, became popular worldwide. The Experience broke up in 1969, but Hendrix went on to perform at Woodstock and become the highest paid rock musician in 1969. Hendrix was one of the most influential guitarist of the 20th century.
