every time martin reads a statement in s3 it is an audibly difficult experience, he has to psych himself up for it beforehand and just force himself to start and then afterwards is shaky and upset and just about on the brink of tears. melanie doesn't react to them quite as badly, but she also says they take a real toll and she slept for twenty hours after reading her first one. which mayhaps puts why jon was such a nightmare in s1 into perspective; he wasn't just offsetting fear and paranoia, he would have felt like he was getting hit by a bus every time he recorded a statement to tape. and as we all know he has famously excellent coping skills.
