My Very Delayed Response To Terry Pratchett’s Death A Few Weeks Back. Not Going To Lie, It Wrecked

My very delayed response to Terry Pratchett’s death a few weeks back. Not going to lie, it wrecked me. I wanted to make something right away but had no idea what would be appropriate, and kept running out of free time.

I feel like everything I have to say about him and his work and world has already been said a million times over, I don’t have a lot to add to it. I’ve yet to read all of Discworld, and at this point I’m probably going to purposely drag my feet just to delay the end as long as possible.   GNU Terry Pratchett

May the 4th truly is a blessed day in the Nerdom calendar:

May the 4th be with you.

Reichenbach Falls Day.

The second day in the yearly celebration of Dracula.

I wonder, how many other days have such a level of importance in so many fandoms? Surely there must be others?

Sometimes my brain’s like “hey, here, out of nowhere, a name that’s absolutely perfect for your character!" But most times it’s like "no. nope. this one sounds ugly. this one doesn’t feel like her. this one spells ugly. this one’s nice but transliterates awfully. she doesn’t look like this one. I hate this one for no reason. This one’s good but I already have a character named like this in the same work"

Also for me it’s certainly not the single most stressful part, but it is a special kind of stress to have someone on your character list who is just a description without a name. I’m not even talking about actually writing someone yet unnamed.

why is it that naming characters is the single most stressful part of writing? i’ll spend weeks drafting intricate plots and creating entire fake histories for countries, but the moment i have to name someone, my brain is like, 'uhhhh… kevin?' i can’t have my epic fantasy hero named kevin! but then i overthink it and end up with something like arithalas drakemourn, which sounds like a bad d&d oc. there is no winning.

My favourite thing about Éowyn and Faramir is that when Éowyn tells Faramir she’s in love with Aragorn, his response is basically “well duh, who isn’t.” He truly gets Éowyn, not only because he has similar experiences with despair and grief, but also because the two of them feel the exact same way about Aragorn.

Strictly, canonically speaking, Faramir isn’t in love with Aragorn, but his old-school Medieval fealty has the level of passion and intensity that a modern reader tends to associate with romantic love. (Though of course he isn’t an outlier in a series about passionate friendship and fealty.) The first time Faramir ever saw Aragorn, in the Houses of Healing, “a light of knowledge and love was kindled in his eyes” and he immediately volunteered to do anything his king asked of him, even though he had just woken up from life-threatening illness and probably didn’t have the strength to get out of bed under his own power. And what he offers to Éowyn, among other things, is this: you can continue to love Aragorn as your king and captain, we can both love him that way, and love each other with a quieter peacetime love.

Do you guys ever think about how Vetinari believes that all people are inherently evil, but then he does things like:

Giving people others would deem irredeemable second chances (Lipwig, the other thief too, he even regretted the death of Lupine Wonse, the guy who summoned a dragon and tried to kill him); spends time with ppl who see only the good in everything (Carrot, Leonard); treats and values ppl like individuals and actually cares about them (that scene in Jingo where he tells Vimes that it’s good that people didn’t get killed in the war).

So I thought,

What if he doesn’t want to believe that everyone is evil. What if he had arrived to that conclusion just from his actual life experience with the assassins and guild leaders, because that’s all he had seen other people do. But he tries to spend time with good people and give criminals second chances because he wants to be proven wrong. To be proven that his philosophy is actually wrong and “there is some good in the world and it’s worth fighting for.”

PSA: Writing a book can take a looooong time. If you've been working on your project for a year, two years, five years... you're not doing anything wrong. If you've written three drafts and thrown them all away, if you can only write a hundred words a day, if you put your book down for six months and pick it up again only to be baffled by what you've written... Congratulations. You're not inefficient or slow. You're just a writer. Welcome to the writing life.

"why can't they just be friends" not in the homophobic way but in the "their platonic relationship in the source material is far more dynamic and complex than the sanitized personalities they gain as a result of shipping" way
