❝ Excusez-moi? Did you have a traumatic brain injury in the last few days or did I just hear correctly that you lied to Adrien about his father?! ❞
𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐀𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐂𝐇𝐋𝐎𝐄́ 𝐈𝐒 𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐑𝐘 𝐖𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐁𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐘. She can feel her old self returning — nasty, venomous words on the tip of her tongue — threatening to return Chloé to ground zero in her redemption progress.
❝ What were you thinking, Marinette?! ❞
It takes tremendous effort not to immediately revert to calling Marinette by the old, crude moniker of 'Marinella' in her ire, but she is just so ridiculously upset. At Marinette for lying to him. At Kagami for her complicit silence. At Hawk— M. Agreste—for starting it all. Even Nathalie knows the truth. They may be okay to keep Adrien in the dark, but Chloé can't. She won't.
❝ You have to tell him. He deserves to know the truth! ❞
❛ you’re not a very convincing liar. ❜ ♡ luka

I don't need anyone! she had screeched.
𝐂𝐇𝐋𝐎𝐄 𝐇𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐘 𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐓 𝐇𝐄𝐑; like she was something worthy to be looked at, rather than like some villain out of a Saturday morning cartoon. In all her desperate attempts to maintain control, she'd pushed it too far and almost lost everything. As it was, Sabrina barely acknowledged her and Adrien wouldn't return any of her calls. Even her father was threatening to send her to a boarding school in London. Left with no friends and a tattered reputation, Chloe had hit her lowest point and didn't know how to claw her way out of the hole she had dug herself into.
As if that wasn't bad enough, Luka had caught her in a vulnerable moment where frustrated tears had sprung forth and overflowed. She had expected him to laugh at her, maybe tell her she deserved every bit of karma that came her way. He would have been right — a bitter thought that came to mind. But he didn't. Perhaps worse than that, he took up the space next to her on the bench and offered to hear her out. Like it was easy. Like they were actually friends.
Chloe threw herself from the bench as if she'd been electrocuted, manicured nails biting into her palms until she could feel the skin tear, screeching at him to leave her alone. She didn't need him. She didn't need anyone.
You're not a very convincing liar, he'd said.
He was so calm about it, so earnest that it actually made Chloe quiet. She stared at him for a long moment before her eyes narrowed into suspicion.
❝ Why are you here? What do you want, Luka? ❞
It can be either original or canon.
❝ Pardon my intrusion, ❞ the intermingled voices are nothing but polite, their tones a symphony of concern. Palms raise in a show of deference; they mean no harm. They come in peace. ❝ It's just—I sensed your doubt, you see. I know it's probably hard to believe, since we're usually on opposing sides... but I'd like to help, if you'll let me. ❞
They're careful to maintain their distance; even in her mindspace, Chloé Bourgeois—Queen Bee—would never allow the comfort Chrysalis would offer their usual targets.
❝ It's painful that they still don't fully trust you, even after all this time. ❞ Rather than a question, they state it as fact; there is no need to wonder when they feel it, too. ❝ You try and try to prove yourself to them that you're different now, but you're still the last one they call, still the one being given lesser tasks. ❞
❝ I can give you the power to make them acknowledge you. Only if you say yes, of course. The choice is yours. ❞ They take a step forward now, cautiously placing a hand on the heroine's arm. Though their head tilts a little, their masked face remains ever passive. ❝ I only want to help. ❞
𝐂𝐇𝐋𝐎𝐄 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐘 𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐈𝐋𝐒; because she has been down this road before ( again and again and again ) and she knows how it will end. She doesn't want to be the bad guy anymore, alone with no friends or support system. Chloé had been trying, she had been making an effort. Her friends ( could she even call them that? ) just needed more time, didn't they?
She hates that she doubts. Hates even more that, in some small way, Chrysalis isn't wrong. But Chloé is so scared of failing again, of letting everyone down — how could she possibly trust the holder of the Butterfly Miraculous?
❝ Ugh, you don't want to help me, ❞ Chloé snips, rearing her head to glare at the emotionless mask. ❝ You want me to fail. You want me to let my friends down and prove them right that I haven't changed! You —— ❞ You want me to be alone.
Her temper rises, not just because of what Chrysalis says, but because even the enemy thinks she can't change. That she'll fall right back into her old ways. Ridiculous!
Well, maybe they don't really know Chloé Bourgeois at all.
❝ ——Get out. GET OUT! I don't want or need your kind of help. I'll earn their trust back on my own! ❞ She shrugs the hand away from her arm, turning away with a petulant air of defiance. ❝ And take your tacky, purple smoke with you. You're a fashion disaster worse than Hawkmoth. ❞
open to mutuals. ↳ castles crumbling.
❝ They're screaming that they hate me. I never wanted you to — hate me. ❞
thinking about chloe performing as clara in the nutcracker. thinking about her parents being too busy to show up. thinking about how chloe expects that no one familiar will be in the audience. and then the curtain opens up and beyond the stage lights she can see the outlines of her classmates sitting there all watching her and maybe she gets a little emotional and cries a little after the show but if anyone mentions it she will deny it to her grave.
❛ The point of Heroes' Day is for you to do something good for someone, Chloé, not your money. ❜ Marinette lets out a sigh, shakes her head, and gives an exaggerated roll of her eyes. Despite her exasperation, she strides forward to link an arm through Chloé's with a wry smile. ❛ Come on, think of someone you want to do something nice for. I'll help you. ❜
( unprompted asks / always accepting !! )
𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐏𝐈𝐃. Not because Chloé didn't want to do something nice, but because — in all honesty — she didn't think anyone would believe she was sincere. She had been trying, really trying, lately to turn it around. She wasn't perfect ( as much as she liked to pretend she was ), and she had definitely stumbled along the way, but she liked to think she had made a little progress in mending the bridges she had burned. Chloé just hoped everyone else saw it that way.
Her scowl softened a little, morphing into something like defeat as she slumped forward with her head bowed. If someone had told her a year ago that she and Marinette Dupain-Cheng would end up being somewhat friends, she would have laughed. Long and loud. Yet, here they were, and Marinette hadn't begrudged her for her mishaps as Chloé tried to make amends.
❝ But — ❞ Everyone likes getting gifts! is what she wanted to say. Whenever she was sad or upset — which, in the past, had been pretty often — she could always count on her father spoiling her to curb any unseemly outburst. Maybe it didn't make her happy, true, but... it had placated her for a while. It had been enough, or she had thought so, anyway. Maybe Marinette had a point. And really, if she thought about it, the person she had been thinking of probably wouldn't have been placated by flashy shows of money. Chloé let out a breath. ❝ ...Fine. I... want to do something nice... for Sabrina. ❞
surprising no one, chloé is choosing violence again

some quick portrayal notes!
this blog is considered canon-divergent past season three. this for two reasons: one, i haven't finished the show ( i am currently on s4 ) so if i get any information wrong or make headcanons that later may or may not be retconned, this is why; and two, i plan to explore a redemption arc for chloe because we were robbed of one.
in line with both @yinbug and @yangnoir's portrayals, the timeline between s1-s5 does not happen in the span of a few months. chloe is 13 at the time of origins, 14 through season one, 15 through two and three, and 16 through four and five. this will make her sixteen in my main verse.
chloe is a closeted bisexual/biromantic. a lot of this has to do with the status of her family. her father being a politician and her mother being toxic at best, chloe fears how she ( and by proxy, her parents ) may be perceived if she openly admits to having feelings for girls as well as boys. image is everything in her family, and chloe doesn't want to tarnish that — at least not when it comes to her romantic/sexual identity, so she definitely struggles with some internalised fears of rejection.
part of the exploration of chloe's redemption will include her focusing more keenly on her ballet. thus far she has been practising it for eight years and takes pointe classes, though it didn't become a very serious interest until she began to realise she needed to turn her life around. the discipline and focus needed in ballet, and especially pointe, gives chloe a much needed outlet for her frustrations and anger.
this will probably be expanded on/added to as i make my way through s4 and s5.
