Hannibal stares from across the room, not unlike a predator stalking its prey. 

Will is breathtaking. Even more so under the flashy attention of the public eye than alone in the comfort of his own home.

Will turns then, while Hannibal is lost in thought, and smiles. Just barely. It’s the smallest turn of the corners of his lips, but it’s enough for Hannibal to notice, just the same.

Hannibal makes his way through the crowd so quickly he feels like he’s running. He’s not, but with the rush it gives him to rudely shove through tens of people just for the chance to speak to Will, he might as well be.

“Hello,” Will says when Hannibal finally reaches him.

“Hello, Will.” Will raises his eyebrow, lips curling further.

“Hannibal Lecter greeting me by name wasn’t on my bingo card for the night.” He takes a sip of his champagne. Hannibal follows the movement, gaze catching on the shine that lingers on Will’s lips. “What brings you here to see me?”

“Am I barred from greeting a model such as yourself?”

“Is this a social call then?” Will’s eyes twinkle as he says it, his features have blossomed into what can only be called a smirk. He knows. He knows exactly what Hannibal wants from him.

“No.” 

“No,” Will echoes. It’s almost a question. Hannibal chooses not to beat around the bush. 

“Quite the opposite, in fact, I was curious if you might consider working—”

“No,” Will says again. Hannibal frowns. “I’m not looking to settle down just yet, if you take my meaning.” 

“Is that so?” Hannibal presses his lips together and attempts to refrain from further comment. Will chuckles a little. It’s a quiet little thing, the sort of sound one makes under their breath when they think no one is listening. Or in Will’s case, whenever he chooses.

“I’m new. It’s best to keep my options open.” Will just keeps smiling at him like he didn’t just reject him. Rudely, at that.

Several people shoot Will concerned glances. Hannibal knows that they’ve all heard what happens, not only to those who aren’t loyal to him, but also to those who are rude. The closest woman nearly chokes on her champagne when Hannibal responds.

“That’s quite a shame. However, I trust you understand that I don’t take this as a formal rejection.”

“I’m well aware.” Will closes the space between them. It makes Hannibal suck in a breath like Will is stealing the oxygen from the room. “As I said, I prefer to keep my options open at the moment.” Will’s fingers brush Hannibal’s lapel, and then he’s leaning in so close his breath fans across Hannibal’s cheek and his lips brush Hannibal’s skin and suddenly Hannibal’s mind is going blank.

Or it is, until Will’s voice seeps in.

“Besides, don’t you have enough pictures of me already?” Hannibal’s lips part. He’s not sure what to say. He’s not sure what he could say.

Will pulls away while he’s still trying to put back the pieces of his brain into some sort of working fashion. Hannibal barely manages to note the ever growing smile on Will’s lips.

“Wouldn’t want you to get bored of me.” This time Hannibal manages to respond.

“I can assure you, that would never be the case.” Especially not after tonight. Hannibal nearly adds.

Will scoffs a little and down the rest of his drink. He steps back and places it on a waiter’s tray, taking a new glass, but it’s more of an excuse to get a better look at Hannibal than anything else.

And look he does. He looks Hannibal up and down once, then takes the time to inspect each and every seam of his suit, the lines of embroidery on his pocket square, the shine of the stitching on his tie, everything. Even the leather of his shoes.

Hannibal swallows hard.

“If you really want a shot—” Will gulps down the champagne and then gives Hannibal a once over one last time. Hannibal really hopes—or maybe doesn’t—that Will is looking at his belt. “—earn it.”

And with that, Will wanders off and disappears into the crowd.
