I finally watched the live action from YYH and it was a huge disappointment. The characters and settings are so well portrayed, but the script is very superficial. It could have been an excellent live action, but it was wasted potential. Other opinions?

I really really need to rewatch YYH but the fics have dropped some info and possibilities into my head. Specifically, fics about Hiei negotiating with the dragon to get control of it. (The "need to get control" was canon, the "negotiating" part is fic.) And some of the details about the dragon. Of Darkness Flame, a primordial being of The Void, a plane of death and destruction, who has consumed every summoner who attempted to get it.
So, what kind of guy tries to summon that? The arrogant. The power-mad. The cruel. The kind of muskrat bastard who eagerly promises slaughter and atrocities.
So basically the kind of moron who brings a pot of cafeteria slop to a potluck. The dragon's sustained by death and destruction, that doesn't mean it doesn't have as much as it wants already.
What Hiei brought to the table was the spice of giving a damn about other people, whether he's willing to admit it or not. And maybe that wouldn't have been true five years ago, but Hiei came to the dragon for survival. For himself and his team. For Kurama, trusted without reservation at his back. For Yuusuke, who trusted him to save their lives despite having every reason not to, who'd only seen him high on psycho murder plots save for the ten minutes or so they'd walked to Maze Castle. Even for Kuwabara, who dives all-in with sentimental honor nonsense and a strength of will that Hiei might well have never seen before, not that Hiei cares if that idiot survives the tournament but Yukina would be sad, that's his story and he's sticking to it.
As fluffy toddler-tv as it sounds, love and friendship are magic. They won't sustain the dragon, but in keeping with the metaphor, it's not like humans can live off herbs and spices either. So that's my theory, based on fanfic and vague memories of episodes I couldn't get for years after finding the series.
(I would like to note that yes, Hiei does still have to use the dragon as a very powerful hard-to-control weapon, you do still gotta feed your army to paraphrase Sun Tzu, but this for-his-team aspect is what had the dragon agree instead of just eating him.)
