bring back tumblr ask culture let me. bother you with questions and statements
My sister brought up many stranded braiding today and I remembered vague details of a book I read once and now not knowing is driving me insane.
here’s what I know:
I probably read this in middle school, so it was generally appropriate for that age, but I was reading way above my age level so it may have been a little above that
The main character was a girl who’s mom died
she had gigantic, poofy, uncontrollable red (I think it was red (but orange red not died red)) hair that she would put in an 8-stranded braid to keep it out of the way
Her dead (or maybe missing but I think dead) Mom also had this hair and would braid it this way
Her dad braided her hair this special way (because mom was dead) and eventually taught her how to braid her hair this way and learning to do her own 8-strand braid was important to her and s big thing about her independence
I think the inciting incident had something to do with her dad being killed/kidnapped but I might be wrong
she went on some sort of adventure to uncover clues and such that involved puzzle she had to solve that was 8 strips of cloth (I think they were red? (Red as in red, not red as in orange like hair)) that she had to braid in the special way to reveal the secret message, which then told her something about her mom and the origin of the braid
To braid the fabric she had to drape it over her head like hair because she had only ever done the braid on herself and she thought about her missing (or dead?) dad and how he used to braid her hair.
I think there was some sort of wise old man who helped her out with the puzzle but I might be making that up considering my interest in books it was probably fantasy and/or YA but idk
Anyway, lmk if you know what book this is and can confirm this is it a fever dream or have a recommendation on how to find it. Thanks!
POV: your frost and you’ve just been cursed playlist
Okay but THEN at the beginning of I Can’t Help but Wonder, the intro is the same as it was in Just a Man, but instead of being played on guitar (Ody alone) it’s played one viola (Penelope’s instrument) because he’s made it home and even thought he became the monster he’s “always [Penelope’s] husband” and with them he can be just a man again, as is reinforced later with the Just a Man reprise at the end of WYFILWMA
"Odysseus" showed us how much Ody has truly changed.
He's compared to almost all monsters in the musical during that one song.
His name's chanting is the same as Polyphemus', and he acts a little like him when he decides to kill everyone.
Po - ly - phe - mus ("Enough")
O - dy - sse - us ("I. Have had. Enough")
He aims for the torches just like Scylla.
"Eurylochus, light up six torches"
"Keep your head down he's aiming for the torches"
He rejected forgivness just like Poseidon did.
"Maybe you could learn to forgive..."
"No"
"Old king our leader's dead. You've destroyed the serpent's head. Now the rest of us are no longer a threat. Old king forgive us instead, so that no more blood is shed. Let's have open arms instead!"
"No."
Also, there's an electric guitar in the song. It represents Odysseus' cunning and ruthless nature.
He IS a monster. But that's what got him home. And he'll embrace this side of him.
Genuinely in tears at Torbek's poetry writing (ep8 of ouaw), i wanna give him a hug so bad 😭😭 little (massive) guy has so many issues 😭😭
Autism be damned, my firbolg grandpa can play a mean Parcheesi
i did NOT need to see this thanks.
i know that people have already discussed this at length but i'm watching the patreon behind the scenes character discussion for frost and listening to derek talk about the psionic order and "mind over matter" and all that and then comparing that to frost throwing his pack in ep 46 has me feeling like the exploding galaxy brain meme. like. he has this canonically 110 pound bag or whatever and yeah that's kind of a meme bc he just picks shit up and Never uses it but that's also So interesting in the context of how he was raised to Not value physical items and give no credence to "things" but rather to ideas, thoughts, mentalities. Frost was taught to hold this value his entire life yet carries a 110 pound bag around with him everywhere. And in that same vein, the order taught him that physical relationships are also supposed to be unimportant, and having people tie him down will only block him from reaching his true potential. yet he's traveled with years with these three friends and when he's "replaced" by someone else for just a few hours on guys' night he feels sensitive and self conscious. and in the carnival horror ride we see that his worst fear is being alone. Everything about his life contradicts everything he was taught is supposed to hold dear, (and side not, i think one of the most interesting parts about this video is the discussion of whether or not frost is Aware of what he's doing, Aware that he's directly going against the pillars of his order, but that's a discussion for another time). And all of this culminates in episode 46, when frost stands alone, all of his friends dead or dying around him, and his throws his pack. on some level i already understood what this meant for him, the getting rid of everything he was saving because it doesn't matter anymore, but after approaching it more from the side of these tenants of his faith, it's like. holy shit. he just lost all his friends, this physical attachments that "tie him down," and now he's willingly giving up all his physical belongings as well, and this is it, that's the moment he reaches that pure mind over matter because he doesn't have anything anymore. there is nothing tying him down. this should be nirvana. but instead, it's the worst moment of his fucking life. everything that was supposed to bring him paradise and freedom and immortality and whatnot has only brought him unimaginable pain and grief.
I believe the consensus was that 5 rouges with short bows, given enough arrows, space to run, and a headstart, could beat 100 gorillas by firing at them from a distance and then bonus action dashing away so that the gorillas never got within range to throw rocks at them. The whole thing was like when you ask a guy what animals he could take in a fight, but nerd version. They literally talked about this for 32 minutes.
Alright I missed most of the pre session chat, why were people talking about jars and gorillas?
All the random things, probably mostly Marauders, aroace stuff, EPIC, Legends of Avantris, and writing but who knows
