“The Haunting Of Hill House” Book Review

“The Haunting of Hill House” Book Review

“The Haunting Of Hill House” Book Review

It starts the quote “whatever walked there, walked alone”. This quote somehow seems to explain the whole story, right? The book wasn’t something I had expected. It deals with mental horror more than it deals with the ghostly horror which was not something I had expected though I knew there would be something psychological to it.

It starts with Eleanor going to the Hill House by getting an invitation from Dr. Montague. The descriptions added about the town downstream the Hill house were like something we expect from a typical haunted house story. However, I too enjoyed the journey of Eleanor going to the Hill House, the writing was very effective in that part. The atmosphere inside the Hill house which has been described made me feel suffocated. The Hill house was described to consist of different rooms with different colours of the rainbow but still very dark and deep, just to think about this it feels like nature is against lighting the house. All through the book, Hill house did not only spread horror, it also had spread hatred, loathing, jealousy and suspicion. But at some points, I felt that though Hill house was disastrous, Hill house was also their comfort zone to an extent. One very disagreeable thing about the book is that it’s very draggy. You’ll have already gone through almost 2/3 of the book but you’d feel nothing major is happening actually. I would have liked it better if it did contain a bit more things going on.

Now, talking about “The Haunting of Hill House” means talking about the characters of the book. The protagonist is of course Eleanor and everything is about her. Her life seems really boring which needed excitement and hence the decision of going to the Hill house has arisen and she was genuinely happy to go there. She is very imaginative and keeps imagining a lot of stuff at the time of the journey. She is actually very insecure and an overthinker. She always keeps thinking about what her mother says or how she would have reacted in all of the situations. I felt like she had been controlled by her mother for the whole time. She troubles herself in every small matter. She is very pathetic and desperate which is very normal for her as she was brought up very strictly. And then comes Theodora. She is a chill kinda person who also seems to like excitement. One of the lines from the book is very appropriate as it has described the characteristics of both Eleanor and Theodora, “Theodora’s face was stiff and sulky, she likes attention, Eleanor without thinking, moved and sat on the floor beside Theodora.” Dr. Montague was the most adventurous among them. The only thing I want to say about Luke is that he is a flirt.

Jackson’s writing style is very simple and easy to understand. She added many small details to make the hill house appear scarier and darker. But I did not like the style of her writing in case of conversations. It was messy with a disturbing flow which lacked smoothness.

This was all about the book. I enjoyed it though my expectation was a bit higher.

“A Christmas Carol” Book Review

“A Christmas Carol” Book Review

“A Christmas Carol”! What a wonderful story! I never thought this book to be this humorous and heart- warming at the same time. Dickens was a great writer indeed. This book has every Christmas vibes to it  starting from presents to foods and family time.

I was really impressed to find out how the story proceeds. Particularly, how Scrooge was learning and realizing how he should have treated people on the basis of what he had experienced in the past. I felt like sometimes we ought to see things with our own eyes to feel it, to believe it. The story has an interesting way to teach us humanity and humanitarian activities.

And what can I say about Scrooge? He was such a miser. I felt like there was no juice of life left in him in the beginning. But he was definitely not like him in the past. Loneliness and childhood trauma make people feelings-less and hard. So was the case with him.

I was impressed with this book. Highly recommend it. Perfect for the Christmas!!

All about Dinosaurs

image

Everyone of us knows more or less about dinosaurs. But the question is, do we actually know what dinosaurs were or how they lived or became extinct? Well, let us know briefly about the dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs were thw animals of the Mesozoic era which were chiefly terrestial, gigantic and fossil reptiles, a group of extinct and are considered as the largest land animals. Mesozoic era was divided into three periods and they were the Triassic period, the Jurassic period and the Cretaceous period. Dinosaurs lived in those three periods. The dinosaurs lived about 245 to 66 million years ago and they lived on earth for about 160 million years.

It is obviously a wonder to most of the people that hopw did the dinosaurs appear in the earth. Mostly it is thought that land mass was gathered on the continent Pangea. So, scientists think that’s how the dinosaurs were originated and they first appeared in South America.

There were both types of dinosaurs- herbivorous and carnivorous. Their forms were mosly like bid lizards, some were like gigantic sharks and others were like big flying birds. Foods of dinosaurs weremostly plants, grass and dead animals. The colours of dinosaurs were dark like the elephants and rhinoceroses. Some also think there were also dinosaurs of bright colours like purple, orange-red and even with blue spots.

Now, let us discuss how the dinosaurs were divided into those three periods of Mesozoic ers. Of course different types od Dinosaurs had appeared in each period.

The Triassic Dinosaurs: The Triassic dinosaurs were reptile types. Some were active, some were covered with feathers. Some known dinosaurs were- the Caelophsis, the Plateosaurus(late Triassic), the Staurikosaurus(lateTriassic) etc.

The Jurassic Dinosaurs: They were mostly like mammals. There were also some sea monsters. Famous dinosaurs were- the Camarasaurus, the Brachiosaurus (late Jurassic), the Allasaurus ( late Jurassic) etc.

The Cretaceous Dinosaurs: In this period, the climate of the earth had changed. There were hard dwelling dinosaurs. They were- the Velociraptor, the Tarbosaurus, the Triceraptors etc.

ArgentinoSaurus was the largest dinosaur and its length was 22-33m. While, Campsognathus was the smallest dinosaur and its length was only 1m.

Dinosaurs used to lay eggs. Dinosaurs were hatched from eggs. The average lifespan of most dinosaurs were 100-152 years.

Today animals like turtles, birds and crocodiles have similarities with the dinosaurs according to some some of their characteristics. Some think that the dinosaurs could roat as their size were enormous. But dinosaurs actually sounded like the chirping of birds.

When we hear about the extinction of animals, the first animal that comes to our minds is the Dinosaur. Dinosaurs became extinct fully in a mysterious way. Some scientists think that the asteroid impact on the earth killed the dinosaurs. Some think, the dinosaurs became extinct all on a sudden. Some say as the climate was changing, the dinosaurs failed to adapt with the new environment and thus they became extinct.

My Eid Facts

Eid Mubarak to everyone. Eid is the biggest ceremony for the entire Muslim community. Eid was so different and joyful when i was just a child. There is a huge difference between the childhood Eid and the teenage Eid. I am gonna explain the way I have celebrated Eid in different stages of my life.

Childhood Eid : The  childhood Eids i used to have were definitely fun. There were not many enjoyable things we could do on the Eid day yet the things we used to do were the joyest things ever to us. We (me, my sister Adhi, cousin sister Suraiya and cousin brother Sibbir) used to wake up early in the morning and took bath. And we used to get dressed soo beautifully.  We used to greet every elder member of our family (usually on Eid day like christmas every close relatives use to be together). Because greetings get us salami ( an amount of money we get when we greet the elders and this is an Eid tradition for the younger just for fun). Getting salami only from the close relatives were not enough for us. We wanted more. So we used to roam around and visit the neighbours ( who were kind of distance relatives) and also got salami from them. With the salami we used to buy the things we wanted ( those contain junk foods most often). Special dishes were cooked in the house. We all used to eat together. It was completely beautiful. At childhood we used to have atleast 3 to 4 sets of outfits for the Eid. We used to change our outfits one after another. At the end of the day we used to count who got the more amount of salami. I know i can not just describe how enjoyable the childhood Eid moments were. It may sound lame to you ( those who are reading). But trust me those days were the best. At least then my Grandma was alive ( my most favourite person in the entire universe).

Preteen Eid : Those Eids were a little bit different from the childhood Eids. Because at that time i left my homeland with my parents and used to live in UAE. Those Eids were with the neighbours i used to have in Abu Dhabi. At that time my neighbours were the closest person to me and my sister. As usual we used to get up early and dressed soo gorgeously. Then we used to go to the Coop ( Abu Dhabi cooperative society, one kind of super market near our home). There we used to buy the things we wanted with our salami money. In those days salami used to come from the neighbour uncle aunties.  From that time Eid has just started getting a little shabbier. I really missed my relatives who i left in Bangladesh.

Teen Eid : Now i don’t enjoy my Eids like i used to once. Now the Eids are just like for taking some goods photos and posting them to social medias. I don’t even buy 3 to 4 outfits now. Maximum time I get myself one perfect outfit. i just feel like my energies are going low day by day when i use to remember how i really used to enjoy my early Eids. However these teen Eids are still in a normal position which I don’t wanna explain. I just sometimes wonder what my adult Eids are gonna be! Where am i going to be in those Eids? Will I be alone! However let’s hope for  better.

‘Oliver Twist’ Book Review

‘Oliver Twist’ Book Review

‘Oliver Twist’ is a hard and bitter novel. This is the first Dickens’ book that I have read and surely not to be the last. The novel follows the terrible, struggling life of the orphan named Oliver. He has been struggling right from his birth.

By reading this novel it is understood that the lives of rich people actually go smoothly at least externally, but poor people always suffer in every little matters both externally and internally. And especially if you’re an orphan like Oliver, nothing is sweeter with you rather everything is bitter and cruel.

The novel has perfectly represented the condition of England then. The riches enjoyed literally everything and the poor on the contrary just suffered and suffered. Discrimination and prejudices were everywhere. As the poor folks had no idea about the rich folks’ business’s, the rich folks too didn’t know how things worked for poor. The things were only known by the people who were in between them. Then the justice system for the poor was as low as their lifestyles were. The magistrates themselves were the most corrupted sometimes. Not only them actually all of the persons related to the guidance of the poor orphans were terribly corrupted and heartless maximum times. The faults of the poor were always talked of and punished where in some cases the faults might also had been done by the riches too. It is also very certain that sometimes fate just only chooses our paths where we really can do nothing.

I really felt traumatized even to think to spend this kind of miserable life when there are really some poor kids out there who are being ignored right from their birth. In some extreme points it was really hard for me to believe that Oliver was still struggling to live in this brutal world where he had gained nothing but torture.

As we always say there is obviously some good people around us, otherwise we would have been distinguished. This kind of good and kind hearted characters are also be seen in the novel for whom Oliver still managed to survive in this brutal world. When you are really good or at least intend to be good, no power in the world can change that.

I truly appreciate the character ‘Nancy’ for she is very Feminist, straight forward, clever and Brave. I really get shocked to think that how can that Old Jew (Fagin) talks to everyone addressing them as dear, so sweetly every time even when he is really wanting to make them do some dirty and cruel works. So without any doubts, he is the most wicked and brutal character ever.

As in most of the Dickens’ books remain some traces of mysteries, ‘Oliver Twist’ also follows no exception. There is a good mystery related to the identity of little Oliver Twist.

I loved everything about the ending. After going through such miseries, the ending brought me joy and little hopes that the power of truth remain very higher than the lies.

“Dracula” Book Review

“Dracula” Book Review

Just completed reading Dracula by Bram Stoker. I’ve got mixed feelings for this book. There are some things which I liked, some things I did not enjoy at all. I would like to discuss thoroughly though I am afraid that I won’t be able to as I have forgotten many things. However, lets get started...oops!

The Things I’ve liked about Dracula:

1. The story itself is very good. It has gothic elements, the environment is very scary.

2. The whole novel was explained indirectly by using different character’s daily journals which is quite interesting.

3. I loved the concept of Jonathan’s going to Transylvania and literally everything happed in there.

4. There were some things which were explained really well. This book contain some little mysteries which were good to read.

5. Totally loved the character of Renfield. Never seen such an interesting character.

The Things I’ve disliked about Dracula:

1. I couldn’t help feeling that this novel could have been a little shorter. There were some really unnecessary details which needed to be excluded to make it more better.

2. Other than Renfield, none of the other characters I’ve found interesting. Even, Lord Dracula himself wasn’t that fascinating as I’ve thought at the beginning of the book.

3. Other than some chapters, most of the chapters or scenarios were a little boring.

4. The relationship between the characters seemed really mechanical to me. I didn’t got them as they were portraited.

5. Last but not the least, I haven’t enjoyed the writing style of Bram Stoker at all. The writings are really hard to follow.

‘Eleanor & Park’ Book Review

‘Eleanor & Park’ Book Review

‘Eleanor & Park’ by Rainbow Rowell is a simple Y/A story. This is basically a love story between two introverted teens. The story takes place in 1980′s. This book has every vibes and chills of that time.

Eleanor is a miserable, insecure, scared, red-headed girl who lives with her stepdad, whom she hates the most. Park is a little, self-esteemed, half Asian boy who is very much happy with his family. Eleanor is a new girl at Park’s school. I really loved the way by which the relationship between Eleanor and Park has grown. They were both a little bit different in thinking from their family and even from each other. But still a bonding of love and care grows between them. Both of them appear to care only for each other. One becomes the permanent shelter of the another.

But I didn’t actually like the writing style. I can’t just stop thinking that it could have shown something more. The pace of the story was a little bit slow. However, I really liked the ending. In total it was not that bad. Good book for Y/A lovers.

Review “Men Explained Things to Me”

image

Just some random thoughts I had while reading the book:

1. Solnit was so pissed with the so-called everlasting knowledge that the men try to represent they have. Literally in every matter, they try to put forward some illogical, unreasonable and irrelevant garbage of the theories they posses and try to stop the women, violating the rights to speak laws everyday.

2. It has become a necessity to start talking about women and their rights by stating about their unprivileged condition first. Many people may find this as cliché or rather boring, but just think about it in this way, we guys  might have become bored to hear about these regular women tragedy everyday where this shitty condition of women is not changing for these whole periods of times those had finally made you bored!

3. I loved how Solnit talked about the violence women are facing in her country as well as tried to talk about some of the problems of India. Some of her quotations are very very strong. She has a great political as well as philosophical views.  She wasn't confined in talking about feminisms and women's problems only but also shared her perspectives as a writer in different artistic values.

4. In one of her essays, she also mentioned that time is definitely changing though. Women are suffering true, but not as much as they used to in the past. I think writing this is definitely an example of optimism which again gives us hope (the famous Pandora's box's hope in the good sense you know). The essay called "Pandora's box and volunteer police force" and "Thinking out of the box" are my absolute favorite.

5. In her essays she also talked about some other issues like capitalism etc. which shows her other sides like unbiases.
