A guy I made when I first received my anatomy books. I must say that the ribs and intercostal muscles where great fun to draw. It was with this piece that I realized that normal 2B pencils can't really get the darks I am looking for. I can also say that this is when I realized that sketchbook paper should not be used for more serious drawings, as it's way too flimsy. Oh well, live and learn.
Finally someone explains why to do something and not just what to do
I see this kinda advice passed around all the time here is the thing: shading with black will indeed look bad if you don’t know what you are doing. However, telling people not to do things without explaining why is terrible advice.
Shadows are the opposite of light, this includes in colour.
This means that if you have light in one colour, the shadow will be of the opposing hue, saturation, and value.
Unless the object is white, it has its own local colour - the object’s true colour, how it would appear if the light were pure white.
The colour of the light influences the local colour of the object. so if you had yourself a brown cube and a blue light, the colours would get bluer and pinker.
now the reason shadows do not tend to be black is because pure white light is hard to find in nature.
the closest you will get to pure white light is during a really overcast day and the sun is filtering through the clouds, but even then it’ll lean towards yellow so the shadows will be slightly blue.
During a clear day, the shadows will pick up a lot of bounce light from the blue sky and have a blue tinge. You can learn more about this in this tutorial: [http://artbyriana.deviantart.com/art/Why-shadows-aren-t-gray-321656856]
But! None of this means you are never allowed to use black.
realistically shadows will have a hint of a colour to them, but stylistically you might be going for, say, a film noir look and deep black shadows are needed for impact for example.
The more you know about how light works, the more informed decisions you can make about shading and the more options you have.
If someone tells you that you can’t do something, they’re wrong! you can do what you like!
yes, black is hard to use and if you just mix a colour with black it’ll get muddy, but thats easily resolved by choosing your colours manually - which ideally you want to do regardless bc the computer doesnt have your eyes & cant choose the colours you like
basically if someone gives you some art advice and says you can’t do something, they’re wrong! you can, you just might need to study a little to figure out how to make things work.
I mean for example, people will say you must make your composition follow the rule of thirds and never align centrally, but while the rule of thirds makes it easy to create visual interest, Mad Max Fury Road is a testament to the fact that central composition can and will work if you experiment.
there are no rules in art! there are theories based on reality, this has been a post on colour theory & light theory, but they exist to inform you, not to restrict you.
Do what you like! Trust your eyes, if you think something looks good, then great! If you don’t, then research & experiment until you do.
Also if you wanna learn more abt colour theory, I go into it in a lot more depth over yonder: http://helpfulharrie.tumblr.com/post/131822744966/ http://helpfulharrie.tumblr.com/post/131958395841/
Inktober 2018 Day 23
“Muddy”
THIS ONE WAS SO MUCH FUN HOLY SHIT. I love drawing feet and fur, so had a blast with this one. But you better watch out, because this guy does NOT appreciate you pushing him into the mud. In fact, might wanna start running pretty quick.

Inktober 2018 Day 30
“Jolt”
Second to last one yall. While inktober was fun, man it was hard to keep up. I’m Just glad that I found a way that allowed me to do every day, because if these pieces were on bigger sheets of paper, heaven knows i would have only been able to do one day with how detailed i can get.

So for all those who know next to nothing about me: I love bugs. Specifically preying mantis and dragonflies cause they are badasses. I’ve been feeling a little bit of art block lately with drawing humans and doing more experimentation into color and digital art, so I wanted to go back to my comfort zone for a bit. This is the result after looking at a whole bunch of “creepy crawlies” that I love so damn much. I will probably add some lazy colors to this at some point just cause I’m starting to somehow enjoy the struggle of it?? Nothing better than a little pain and suffering right? Inktober 2018 Day 15
“Weak”
These are more words than a drawing, but it’s something I think a great deal about. I find the whole concept that men don’t cry is bullshit and weak. If a person cries in front of you, I see that as a huge strength, as they are willingly showing a weakness to another person. That takes immense strength to do..... not to mention crying is a literal way to dump excess emotions in the form of chemicals from the body.
Titled: Toxic Tides
So I decided that I’m gonna do Inktober 2018 whether I like it or not, so here’s Day 1: Poisonous

Inktober 2018 Day 13
“Guarded”
I’ve always loved the concept of natural guardians to these mystical places that humans are not allowed to enter. You go beasties, protect your magic shit~

A wip i have where im trying to better understand lighting and color. Also trying to kinda emulate the style of @rema-rin cause i adore how she uses a more flat colors to denote shadow instead of blending. Idk i just really love that style, where its kind of sketchier and has less rendering to it. Clean lines not in the linework but in the actual color itself.
This beast here was going to be a part of my Inktober 2016 work, but then I decided that it would be cool to have a stippled background... which means that I finished it about three months after. Stippling is a pain in the ass my friends. I have recovered though. Just means that this piece was the entirety of my Inktober work, and more. I'm pretty satisfied with it though because of the crosshatching on the body of the beast that contrasts with the background stippling. He was actually inspired off of a little lamp that sits on my art desk. I was just looking for simple forms of inspirations and BAm, Light Beast.
Just a random post, but I've been doing a lot of exploration on Undertale and everything to do with it. Fan comics, Canon stuff everything other than actually playing unfortunately.....and....it just shocking how real it feels. I just feel the need to talk a little about this wonderful game with its beautifully developed characters. I've seen quite a bit of the angst having to do with some of the chars and the different ways to do a playthrough. My main thought on this game is the absolute horror that happens with a 'No Mercy' run, killing all of the main characters who show the player love and affection, and the effect this has on the rest of the characters in the game, especially in Sans' case, who is my favorite character. I believe that the pacifist run is the true ending to the game, but the other timelines, mainly the genocide timeline, and their effect they have on a select few characters just gets to me like nothing has before. The effect they have on Sans is astounding, as he has knowledge of the resets and saves of the player, along with any previous run throughs, of the game, which likely cause him nightmares should the previous games be No Mercy runs. This and how the death of his friends and especially his brother affect him just makes my guts wrench with sadness for him. A lot of people are scared of Sans as they fight him near the end of the No Mercy due to his cold rage towards the player's actions but I feel only this unbearable sadness for Sans....all those who he loves and cares about are dead and since he knows of the resets he knows that all he tries to do in that timeline is for naught. Urgh it just makes me want to take all the potential pain away from Sans, the hurt that comes from his almost omnipotent awareness and the pain from the chance of losing his brother and those closest to him in any play through other that the True Pacifist Run.....anyways....just felt good to get these thoughts that I've been wondering about all day out onto "paper." Anyways, see ya around.
