âHey, Tech.â You smiled sweetly down at him from where he sat in his bunk. He was stripped down to his blacks snugged under the sorry excuse for a blanket that every clone was issued upon beginning active duty service.
âHello, cyarâika.â Tech greeted you while briefly looking up from his datapad, a small smile gracing his features at the sound of your voice. You blushed at his use of the Mandoâa term while the butterflies in your stomach took flight.
âAre you busy?â You asked, slightly tipping your head to one side, hands clasped together behind your back.
âNot especially.â He replied, âAre you in need of something?â Tech continued tapping away at the keys of his datapad for another few moments.
âOh, well I was just wondering..if maybe youâd like to cuddle and watch a holofilm with me?â You looked everywhere but at him while a blush crept its way across your cheeks.
Your relationship with Tech was still quite new, you two only having been together for a month, and you both were still learning to navigate being a couple within the squad.
Sitting more upright in his bunk, Tech set aside his datapad and adjusted his goggles that had slid down his nose. His eyes settled on you as he looked you over standing before him. You were wearing lounge shorts and a shirt that was several sizes too big with the Republic emblem on the shoulder of itâs left sleeve and Wreckerâs CT number and name sewn in Aurebesh into the hem. Though, Tech could tell it was his largest brotherâs shirt simply by the size of it.
âYou are wearing one of Wreckerâs shirts.â Tech stated and raised a quizzical brow as the unfamiliar feeling of mild jealously tugged at his heart. He inwardly scolded himself for feeling such a way but found that it was not so easily dismissed.
âOh, yeah, he gave it to me when the shipâs air conditioning was broken a few months ago since my GAR issued sleepwear was long sleeved.â You answered him quickly, taking note of how his expression had changed after he had gotten a proper look at you.
Tech nodded but didnât speak for a moment, seemingly lost in a thought that made his features harden just a bit. You glanced over his face as his lips pursed ever so slightly and immediately recognized the slight jealously he must be feeling over you wearing his brotherâs shirt.
You dropped your gaze down to the shirt in question that hung very loosely on your body and then brought your eyes to look at Tech again, his expression unchanged as he stared off in thought, no doubt trying to wrestle with his feelings.
You couldnât help the soft and barely audible âoh, Techâ that left your lips as you realized what he was feeling.
You smiled softly, deciding then that youâd make sure he felt every bit of your devotion for him in that moment. Climbing into his bunk, you reached for the privacy curtain and pulled it closed with a gentle swoosh. Turning from your seated position to face him, you leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek. Tech snapped out of his introspection at the contact of your lips to his face, feeling his heart rate begin to quicken slightly. He noticed that you had pulled the curtain closed around his bunk but before he even had time to wonder what you were doing, he observed as you reached for the hem of Wreckerâs shirt. You pulled it off in one smooth motion, then folded it neatly and set it down on the floor next to his bunk.
Techâs eyes widened behind his goggles as he took you in sitting before him, wearing only your GAR issued shorts and bra. His face had flushed considerably as his eyes wandered over your body. Watching him take in the sight of you seated in front of him made a blush spread across your own face. Dropping your gaze from Tech, you instinctively crossed your arms over your middle and shifted a bit nervously on his mattress.
Taking you in for another lingering moment, Tech finally opened his mouth to speak. âYou areâŚstunning.â He said breathily while his eyes memorized every detail of your figure. Your blush deepened under his gaze. You smiled shyly back at him while tucking some of your hair behind your ear in an effort to keep from fidgeting nervously.
After passing his gaze over you once more, Tech leaned over the side of his bunk, reaching for the storage drawer just beneath it. He pulled from it one of his own GAR issued t-shirts, and pushed himself back up into the bunk. Once seated comfortably again, Tech offered you the shirt, âHere. Iâd much prefer it if you wore my shirt instead of Wreckerâs. You may have it if you so desire it.â
âThanks, Tech.â You murmured sweetly in surprise as you took his shirt from him. You ran your thumb over the stitching of his name and CT number embroidered at the bottom hem. Glancing back up into his deep brown eyes, you reached across the short distance separating Tech and yourself, gently bringing your hand to rest against his cheek. âI didnât mean to make you jealous. My other sleep clothes need to be cleaned and Wreckerâs shirt was the only top I had.â Your tone had shifted, taking on the sincerity that reflected in your eyes. You hoped that your reassurance would ease his troubled mind.
Techâs eyes flitted between yours and then down to your lips and back up again. âI am aware that you did not mean to cause me any ill feelings, dearest. It had just occurred to me that I would much prefer to see you wearing one of my shirts instead of my brotherâs.â Techâs voice was quiet as he admitted his feelings. Your eyes widened in surprise at his words and you felt your face flush yet again. He was terribly skilled at making you blush, even during the most inopportune moments.
Slowly, you moved in closer to him, setting his shirt aside then bringing your hand to rest on the other side of his face. Your fingers pressed firmly into the sides of his face as you gently pulled him towards you. Tech gasped slightly at your touch which made you smile before pressing your lips gently to his. He kissed you back with fervor while his hands came up to firmly grasp at your shoulders.
You felt Tech begin to shift in front of you without breaking the contact of his lips on yours. Gently, he eased you into his lap while his hands almost possessively found hold on your waist. Your body was now fully flushed against his with your legs wrapped around his waist and crossed behind him. Tech slowly, but deliberately began trailing feather-light kisses down your neck and across your shoulder. His touch pulled a sound from you Tech wanted to hear repeated over and over again for the rest of his life. The heat that was building within him was growing hotter the more he touched you and the more you whispered his name in pure bliss.
âTech, Tech, my loveâŚâ You half whispered, half moaned against his ear. This sent a shutter through him as his hands began roving over the bare skin of your waist and back. You squeezed your legs around him in a desperate attempt to be even closer to him.
Feeling you press further into him sent Tech into overdrive. With one smooth motion he flipped you so that you were positioned underneath him with your legs still wrapped around his waist. You gasped at the sudden change in position while the warmth in your chest began to spread throughout your body.
Gazing up at him, wide eyed and with lips slightly parted, you uttered his name again, âTechâŚâ your voice dripped with desire as your eyes flickered back and forth between his own then down to his lips.
He stared back at you, both his hands on other side of your head with his weight not completely resting against you. Tech searched your face for any sign of discomfort before leaning down to kiss you once more.
âPlease alert me if you become at all uncomfortable.â Tech insisted before lowering himself onto you, not wanting to push any boundaries you might have.
âIâm more than comfortable with this.â You smiled and gestured with a glance down at your two bodies, his hovering tantalizingly close just above your own. Your consent came much faster than he was expecting but he smiled down at you in a way that conveyed all the love and admiration he held within his heart. Before he could lean down to resume expressing his affection, you whispered something to him that he thought he must have heard incorrectly with how quietly you had spoken.
âI love you, Tech. Iâm yours.â You whispered while taking in his expression. Neither of you had said those three little words yet, but now seemed like the perfect time to tell him. If you were being honest, you had loved him from the moment you first spent time alone with him in the cockpit one night during his watch shift, but it had taken a while for the two of you to admit your feelings for each other.
Techâs eyes were wide and his breath hitched in his throat as his heart hammered against his chest. He opened his mouth to respond but the words wouldnât form, so he just gazed down at you through his goggles with his lips slightly parted.
You chuckled softly while slowly running your fingers through his soft curls at the nape of his neck. âItâs okay, you donât have to say it back if youâre not ready to.â
But his reply tumbles from his lips before youâve barely finished your sentence.
âAnd I love you, however, based on the simple fact that I have been enamored by you since the moment you joined this squad, it is I who belongs to you.â He breathes out his reply.
Techâs words bring tears to the corners of your eyes and you whisper his name yet again in an almost choked breath. Itâs enough to push him forward, resting his weight against you and pushing his lips to yours in near desperation, like he needs your lips on his like he needs air in his lungs to breathe. Tech continues his desperate quest to taste as much of you as he possibly can, kissing from your lips down to the soft spot under your ear, then further down to your pulse point.
His kisses pull a gasp from you and then he hears you repeating his name over and over in the most blissful tone heâs ever heard. âDearest, you will drive me mad with the way in which you are uttering my name.â Tech whispers into your neck, his mouth never leaving your skin.
âM-mad in a good way?â You breathily stutter out, further burying your fingers in his hair.
âWell, yes, of course in a good way.â Tech chuckles darkly against you while his hand moves to tangle in your hair. You sigh his name again, just to see and feel his reaction. Tech groans quietly into the spot between your neck and shoulder then places another needy kiss there.
âHow touching, but could the two of you not do that while some of us are trying to sleep.â Came Crosshairâs voice from his bunk above Techâs, annoyance dripping from his tone.
Your eyes grew wide at the sound of Crosshairâs voice as Tech pulled back slightly, rolling his eyes at his brother. Your hands retreated from the back of Techâs head to cover your face as it turned as red as a meiloorun.
âYeah, and for that matter, could you guys wait until the rest of us arenât still aboard the ship before getting, uhâŚintimate?â Echo chimed in from the adjacent bunk.
âOh kriff.â You cursed through your fingers as you locked eyes with Tech for a brief moment.
âTechnically, we are not engaging in any intimate activity at this moment other than kissing.â Tech pointed out shortly to both of his brothers before planting another kiss to your forehead.
âTech!â You squealed, bringing both your hands to cover his mouth. His eyes flashed with a mischievous and confident glint from behind his goggles.
Your hands slid down to rest on his chest as you giggled awkwardly. After a beat of silence, you mustered up the strength to speak directly to Echo and Crosshair.
âHeâs right, guys. We were just kissing.â You say, trying to keep your voice steady and even, though your heart was still pounding from embarrassment.
âDoesnât matter.â Crosshair shot back lazily. âIf youâre gonna kiss in here, then at least have the decency to warn us first. Or find a different part of the ship that isnât where we all sleep.â
Tech propped himself up onto one arm before pushing himself back into a seated position on his mattress. You let out the smallest of whines when the weight of his body pressed against yours was suddenly gone. After adjusting his goggles, he offered you his hand and pulled you up to sit next to him, both of your backs against the wall of the bunk.
âWe did not plan on osculating. It happened organically.â Tech stated matter of factly as he adjusted his goggles again.
âReal romantic, Tech.â Echo deadpanned.
Echoâs comment made you bury your face in Techâs shoulder. Huffing out a breath, you decided to silence Crosshair and Echo hopefully once and for all tonight. You really couldnât handle much more of this teasing.
âRegardless, Tech is still right, we didnât plan on making out. But get over it for kriffâs sake, Iâm sure both of you have been caught more than once getting cozy in here with some fling or another so, stow it.â
The room would have been deafeningly silent if not for the hum of the Marauder. You worried for a moment if youâd spoken too harshly to Echo and Crosshair, but the feeling quickly drained from your mind as Tech interlaced the fingers of his left hand with those of your right.
âSo, she does bite.â Crosshairâs slightly muffled chuckle broke the silence. âWatch out, Tech.â
You let out an exasperated sigh while pinching the bridge of your nose with your left hand. Before you could open your mouth to snark back at the sniper, Tech leaned in close to your ear, his breath fanning against your neck, stopping you from saying anything further.
âDo you indeed bite, meshâla?â Tech whispered so that his brothers couldnât hear. âWhat an intriguing thought. I do intend to find out at a more appropriate time and place if you do.â
Your eyes grew wide at the sudden boldness from Tech. But without skipping a beat, you turned your head to face him, leaning in to kiss him deeply before taking his bottom lip between your teeth and giving it a slight nibble. You gently pulled away and gazed at him through half lidded eyes, a suggestive look crossing your face as you took in his pleasantly surprised expression.
âOnly if you want me to.â You whispered with an enticing lilt to your voice.
âOh, I most certainly do.â Tech murmured as he leaned in to capture the soft spot under your ear in a gentle kiss.

Plot: Wrecker's plans fall through - but in the best way.
Warnings: None.
Word Count: 499
Authorâs Note: Something soft and sweet for this man because he's lovely.
It was a special day. Everyone was out and about on their break, which gave you a reprieve to check the meager medical supplies aboard the Marauder.
A dull thud sounded, then another. Youâd know that step cadence anywhere, which caused you to smile. Wrecker had returned.
All the time you had spent with the Batch had afforded you the opportunity to get to know them all â especially the very tall, sweet man who had worked his way into your heart.
And you were worried he knew. Being half-blind and half-deaf did not mean he missed seeing or hearing things you didnât want him to notice. But that kind man never seemed to ask about your shyness around him, nor did he say anything if he noticed you looking at him for an extended amount of time.
You hurried to look busier than you were when he came around the short corner.
Wrecker beamed. âI got a surprise for ya!â
Your heart fluttered. âYou do? You didnât have to do anything for me.â
âBut I wanted to!â
âAlright, lead the way.â
He held out his hand and you shyly grabbed it.
âClose your eyes,â he said. You did. He led you a short distance and then said, âTa-da!â
You opened your eyes and on his bunk was a basket.
âWow, uh, itâs lovely Wrecker,â you said with as much happiness as you could muster to cover your confusion.
âIâm taking you on a picnic!â
Your face lit up in surprise, then a blush. A picnic with Wrecker? It almost sounded like a date. Excitement filled your veins and then it was replaced with dread as you heard it.
Tap.
Tap.
Taptap.
Pitter-patters turned into heavy downpour as rain hit the roof of the Marauder.
Wrecker looked up at the ceiling of the ship, then deflated.
âAw, man. I really wanted to impress ya.â
You stepped closer to Wrecker and placed a hand on his arm. He looked at you, eyes wide and lips parted in surprise. You decided to take the leap, warmth in your cheeks.
âYou already have. Youâve done something really nice for me.â
âBut ya wonât get to enjoy it. The weather ruined it.â
âWe can eat in the cockpit. Lay out a blanket and listen to the rain as we eat together.â
He smiled. âReally?â
âYeah. Besides, a date turned on its head isnât going to make me lose interest in you.â You froze as you realized what had come out of your mouth, but it was too late.
His eyes widened again. âY-you like me?â
You whispered, âYes.â
He whooped with joy, then picked you up and spun you around. You giggled and he set you down gently.
âOh, you have no idea how long Iâve been wondering if I should tell ya how I feel. I really, really like ya, too.â
You smiled, then leaned into his side.
âWell, shall we?â He grabbed the basket and a blanket, then your hand.
âWe shall.â

Well, since we're on a Boba kick, let's go with classic Bounty Hunter Boba. You ran away from home before you were sent away to be the mistress of a distasteful Imperial Officer. When Boba finds you, because of course he does, you offer up your charms in exchange for freedom. I feel like at first he'll be all cocky, like you'll need to prove it to him that your â¨ď¸charmsâ¨ď¸ are worth it. But then, once he has a taste, he's hooked...
BESTIE I LOVE HOW YOUR MIND WORKS
your parents are rich, like royalty of a whole system of planets rich. you've always been aware of the fact that you'll be married off to whomever they deem appropriate, and while you don't like it, you also understand that this is just how the galaxy works.
but then, you find out that not only is your husband-to-be an imperial officer, he's had three previous wives, all of whom died under suspicious circumstances. you try to bring this up to your parents, but they won't hear anything of it, already dreaming about the influence they'll be able to wield with their daughter as the wife of an important imperial officer.
you're determined that you won't let this bastard kill you, so you make the brave (or maybe stupid) decision to run away before the wedding.
your parents, being as rich as they are, of course hire the best bounty hunter in the galaxy.
meanwhile, boba is of the impression that this is going to be easy. you're essentially a spoiled princess, running away from home because you don't like the husband mommy and daddy picked out for you. he's seen this all play out before. you're just looking for a bit of a thrill, but soon enough you'll be hanging off your husband's arm, dazzled by the riches and influence he supposedly wields.
but.
slowly, his opinion begins to change. it takes him weeks to find you. he's never had a bounty hide out from him for this long. it's almost impressive, if he weren't so annoyed.
he finally corners you on hoth of all places, and he's completely stunned to see that you've managed to set up a small ice cave, lined with furs you must have skinned and cleaned yourself, and meagre but filling rations. you're wearing surprisingly sensible clothes, warm but also unassuming. you don't have any technology, but you wield a knife with unerring accuracy. you were prepared, that much was obvious. still, you're not formally trained, and boba's the best in the business.
it takes him longer than he'd like to admit to subdue you, and the scuffle ends with you on your back as he straddles your hips, hand pinning yours above your head as he holds a vibroblade to your throat.
"kill me," you whisper, and he once more finds himself caught off guard. "kill me, or keep me for yourself, but don't take me back to him."
he scoffs, the noise doing a poor job of masking of how rattled he is by your request. "not how this works, princess."
but you don't flinch. "either you kill me, keep me, or take me back. and I promise you, if you take me back, I'll take my own life before I let him do it."
boba doesn't want to think about what that means.
he stays quiet, pulling out a pair of cuffs and locking them around your wrists. you sigh, having expected this. he pulls you to your feet and leads you to his ship.
there, he pauses in front of the carbon-freezing unit. you can't see his expression behind his helmet, but you wonder if he's considering your offer.
but, he says nothing, and gestures for you to step into the unit. you close your eyes for a moment, already planning how you'll get access to the poison you need for a swift but painless death once you're delivered to your fiancĂŠ.
you step into the carbon-freezing unit, and the world goes dark.
~~~
when you come back to awareness, it's slow and painful. you're dizzy, confused, and you can't see a thing. your hands are no longer bound, so when you feel a firm grip on your shoulders, you instinctively lash out at who you assume is a guard, or your fiancĂŠ.
you manage to get a punch in before your wrists are grabbed, and a surprising voice filters in through the fog.
"easy, princess."
you still, eyes searching but unable to see anything.
"f-fett?"
he doesn't respond, but you allow yourself to be moved until you're settled into a seat, the cushion soft beneath your aching legs, sore from the pins and needles rushing up and down every inch of your body.
"give it a minute, princess. let me know when you can see."
it's difficult, just sitting there, vision blank, but slowly, shadows and light begin to filter back in, followed by blurry colors and shapes that slowly form into a clear picture.
the bounty hunter is sitting on a table in front of you, still in most of his armor, which explains the pain in your knuckles, but his helmet is off, revealing a stern expression, though it softens almost imperceptibly when he sees the recognition in your eyes.
"I can see you," you whisper, eyes darting around as you try to make sense of your surroundings. "where am I?"
he lets out a low laugh.
"you gave me three options, princess. remember?"
your mind flashes back to the ice cave, where you'd fought for your life, and been subdued regardless.
"kill me, keep me, or take me back and I'd kill myself."
he nods.
"it'd be a shame to kill such a pretty young thing," he says softly, tone almost mocking. "even bigger shame to let you kill yourself over that piece of bantha shit."
your mind jumps to the third option.
"so," the bounty hunter says, contemplative, with a hint of a challenge. "convince me why I should keep you."
you don't give yourself any time to second guess. you lean forward, hands landing on his broad thighs as you place your lips against his. you nibble lightly on his lower lip, letting your tongue flick out to beg for entrance. he grants it to you, though you can't tell if he's just humoring you or not.
as soon as your tongue brushes against his, he's pulling back, and you worry for a second that you've done something wrong.
but his arm wraps around your waist and yanks you forward so you're perched in his lap, hands flying to his chest to steady yourself. he looks up at you, eyes dark and hungry.
"that's a good start, princess. why don't you see what else you can do to convince me to keep you?"
Going through this too right now - wish I had Wrecker though â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ - this is so lovely and I wish I could just squish it to my chest and keep it there
Pairing: Wrecker x GN!Reader
Summary: After falling out with friends, you find comfort in your favorite guy.
Warnings: Fluffy and some angsty friendship sads
Word Count: 647
A/N: this is totally not me processing a real life situation đ
You were quiet. Unusually so, in fact but you just couldnât shake the whole body permeating ache. It had been months since the fallout with your friendships but some days⌠some nights⌠you beat yourself up over how you could have done things differently. The âmaybesâ and the âwhat ifsâ echoed in your mind the like the reverberations of the bass in 79s on Party Primeday.
Wreckerâs strong and warm touch returned you to the present. His large calloused hands tenderly squeezed and caressed your tense shoulders with an affection so deep it bled into your bones and provided instant comfort.
âThinkinâ âbout Ess nâ Kae again.â The soft rumble of his voice was a statement instead of a question. A gentle reminder of how well he could read you.
You hummed a quiet affirmative. Denying the reality of his statement was futile.
âWanna talk?â Sweet, sweet Wrecker. Always so deeply emotionally astute. He read you and everyone else around him like a munitions manual.
You shook your head with a sigh. âItâs just the same things. Again. I donât want to burden you with repetitive whining. But thanks Wreck.â
His arms snaked around you, strong and protective. You melted some as your back pressed into his chest. For being so big and muscular, his sweet and gentle nature made his hugs softer than the softest plushies.
âNuh-uh, meshâla. If ya need ta talk, ya talk. I donâ care if yaâve said it a thousand times before.â
His firm insistence crumbled your resolve immediately and the words spilled out once more. Just as they had countless times before.
âI just⌠I was content being cordial with Ess. We even apologized to each other. And then I find out they were bad mouthing me to my new friend group! And Kae⌠kriff⌠that one hurts more. The fact that they just started ignoring me. Heck Iâd hoped weâd reconcile but clearly that isnât going to happen. JustâŚâ a frustrated and hurt sigh escaped your lips. âI know I made mistakes. Iâm not too proud to admit that Wreck. But kriff it hurts. And not a karkin word. Just ghosted.â
Wreckerâs arms around you tightened as his chin came to rest on your head. His fingers traced soft patterns into the skin of your stomach. The muscles fluttered and you huffed a soft chuckle as his featherlight touch tickled you.
âWhat would ya say to âem. Right now. If ya could?â
You pursed your lips momentarily before uttering, âWe donât have to be friends anymore, but Iâd also prefer it if we werenât enemies. And I am sorry for my part in the dissolution of our friendship.â
The rumble in his chest made you cuddle closer. One hand came to your cheek, holding your face with intuitive softness and you smiled. You loved how safe you always felt with him.
âAnythinâ else?â
You shook your head as you looked up at him. In spite of the pain that still ached in your chest, the warmth of his affection spread deeper and more quickly.
âThank you Wrecker. Youâre so sweet. And smart. And patientâŚâ
Wrecker laughed and pulled you closer. âCourse cyare. âM always gonna listen. Always gonna be here for ya.â
You pulled up and kissed his jaw before nuzzling beneath his chin.
âWant to watch a holo tonight?â
âHaha! Hell yeah I do! Whatcha thinkinâ?â
âComedy?â
Wrecker growled playfully and pulled you in, kissing and squeezing you until you were all consumed with giggles. He wrapped the massive blanket on the sofa around you both as you curled up in his lap and turned on the holovision.
You watched the holofilm quietly, his steady heartbeat a soothing balm to the raw and healing emotional wound of your lost friendships. And while bygones are bygones, you took comfort in knowing that Wrecker was by your side no matter what.
Summary: Wrecker comes to you looking for comfort after the events of Eriadu.
AN: Look at me all punctual when I'm the one making the due date? But nooo when someone else tells me I need to have something done at a certain time, that's just not possible /lh. Please note this is my first time really writing a fic for Wrecker! If need be I might make edits to this. Gender neutral pronouns are used at the end, other than that none are used. Please enjoy!!
It has been a standard week since the events of Eriadu and the capture of Omega that followed.Â
There was so much uncertainty that puddled inside you and the squadâevery day you spent tense and on edge, not knowing what the future would bringâhaving little to no sense of familiarity or consistency. You didnât know how to adapt to the rapid changes around youâhow to move around the physical and emotional wounds that persisted you during every task. Everything was going faster than you could process. But eventually, it became clear that you couldnât just do nothing.
That was when the obsessive need to become a better pilot for the Batch started. It was the only thing you could think of that would make you useful right now. Flying like your life depended on it was the only thing that distracted you from the turmoil of such a detrimental loss.Â
You started one of your runs after Hunterâs briefing, notifying you and Wrecker that Echo would be leaving with Rex later that day cycle. It must have been 3, no, 4 hours before you were commed by Hunter âHavoc 6, itâs time to come down. Youâve been at it long enough.â
You shook your head despite knowing he couldnât see you, âNo can do Sarge, I need to get this down.â you explained, using the nickname you started calling him when you first joined his squad. He wasnât ever technically your sergeant, and you found it fun to pull his leg with that fact.
He said your name in a warning tone, âThatâs an order.â
You groaned, you hated when he pulled that card. No, he wasnât your sergeant, but you still followed and respected him as the leader, and he knew that. You probably shouldnât continue to test him.
Turning the Marauder you made your return to the cliff you stationed yourselves at, camping out in a large cave on the side of it. You completed your landing sequence, exiting the shuttle begrudgingly with a displeased Hunter to greet you, a hand on his hip; Echo was beside him shaking his head. You simply responded putting both of your hands on your hips and childishly poking out your tongue at Hunter. You looked behind him, finding Wrecker sitting on an old crate. He had been more open about the hurt caused by the last mission. Often quiet, saying little to nothing. You felt your eyebrows press together in worry.
You moved past Hunter taking a seat beside Wrecker on a separate crate. You looked down at his hand resting next to his leg. You wanted nothing more than to hold it.
But instead, you rubbed his shoulder attempting to soothe the hurting giant next to you.
Echoâs departure wasnât making the changes any easier for anybody. You all knew it was coming, that he wouldnât be able to stay long. That his heart was in the fight. But you hoped all of you would have a few more days before Rex took him back. You enjoyed his presence, and even if they didnât outright say it, so did the rest of the squad.
You stayed with Wrecker whilst Echo and Hunter awaited Rexâs arrival beside the Marauder. Wrecker had kept his gaze on the floor, his eyes carrying a sad gleam.
Once Rexâs shuttle arrived, Echo approached you and placed his hand on one of your shoulders.
âMake sure they stay outta trouble.âÂ
You nod, trying desperately to not let your emotions get to you.
âAnd quit drinking so much karking caf, itâs not good for you,â he said light-heartedly as he gave you a squeeze on your shoulder.
You gave a playful scoff, âNo promises,â you responded causing him to roll his eyes.
âJust try, yeah?â
You look away from him and rub your head, mumbling, âYeah yeah, Iâll work on it.â
Moving over to Wrecker, Echo gave him a reassuring squeeze on the bicep, âEverything will be fine, donât worry.â
Wrecker only gives a faint nod in response, his eyes slightly wincing at the pain from moving his neck.
Echo gave you both one more nod goodbye before he turned around to head to Rexâs ship. Rex wrapped an arm around his shoulder and walked him up the ramp. Echo turned his head and gave you all a wave of his scomp before the doors closed, and the ship took him with it.
You all stood there, watching as Rex and Echo left the atmosphere. Even Wrecker lifted his head to watch the man he had come to care for leave. You couldnât help the pang in your heart. You wanted nothing more than to keep your boys with you, so you could know they were safe. But you knew that what Echo was doing was important work that he needed to do for himselfâfor his brothers.
Once Rexâs shuttle was no longer visible, Wrecker stood, heading inside the Marauder, leaving only you and Hunter outside.
âWhat do we do now, Sarge?â you asked, unable to hide the waver of doubt in your voice. You hoped your leader would give you a plan you could hold yourself to.
Hunter sighed, you couldnât ignore how tired he looked. âWe keep searching. We⌠donât let Techâs sacrifice go to waste. Thatâs what we do.â
âBut how?â
He turned to face you, âI don't know,
but weâll figure it out. We always do. We have to, for all our sakes.â
Itâs been only three days since Echo left, and Wrecker became that of a ghost. Spending the past few days in the gunnerâs mount. The silence that came made the Marauder feel foreign; as if you walked onto the wrong ship. You wished heâd talk to you, to Hunter. You just wanted him to say something. You hated it when everything was so quiet. At least when he and Omega were making a ruckus, you knew they were okay. A loud crew was an alive one.
You had spent the entirety of the day helping Hunter take count of inventory. And with your final numbers, the pit in your stomach deepened. There were only two days worth of rations to split between the crew. And when you told Hunter he was, expectantly, just as concerned. You saw his heart sink, and the bags under his sleep-deprived eyes deepen.Â
âI need to comm Rex,â he mumbled, running a hand down his face before heading to the cockpit and immediately attempting to make contact with Rex. He only patched through after his second attempt. The conversation wasnât long, as Rex and Echo had a mission to pick up a clone wanting to leave the empire. But miraculously, they had someone in mind to help.
As soon as Rex gave him the information he needed, Hunter moved to the Navicomps and began mapping out the route you were to take. You offered to give him a hand, but he insisted he had it covered. So instead you left him with a cup of caf before you went to the cockpit.
You hoped Rexâs contact would be able to help as he said. That once you had a full inventory, everyoneâs minds would be able to settle. That youâd be able to get on your feet to start searching for answers.Â
The cloudy day transitioned into a stormy night on the planet you and the boys managed to station yourselves on; the drumming of rain becoming a hypnotic lullaby. You have a hot cup of caf in your hands. It makes sense to stay awake instead of disrupting your sleep later since youâd need to be awake in three standard hours to meet Rexâs contact. However, you couldn't help the calm, empty daze coming over you. It was pleasant to have an empty mind, to say the least, even if it was only for a momentâeven if it was hard to maintain when the ship's silence matched that of your head.
It felt wrong trying to enjoy the calm after losing so muchâafter losing everything. As if, you weren't allowed to have it.
You pinched the bridge of your nose, cursing yourself for not enjoying the moment. Who knew when youâd have one like this again?
You grumbled inaudibly to yourself, finishing the last of your caf as you stared out the transparisteel. When you were about to get up to refill your cup, you could almost feel Echoâs disapproving gaze.Â
So you decided that maybe one would be enough.
You rubbed your hands together, it was freezing in the Marauder. You wanted nothing more than to turn on the heating systems, but Hunter told you against it earlier; he wanted to conserve energy when possible. You tucked the old Republic-issued blanket on your lap, the thin fabric doing little to keep you warm.
âWhen have we ever followed orders?â
âNo!â
âTech!â
Wreckerâs body shoots up, banging his head, thunder challenging him as it crashes loudly in the distance. His body is ridden with shivers, unable to regain control as he takes in his surroundingsâfrantically looking for Lula. A relieved sigh escapes him once he sees her arm poking out from behind him. Wrecker immediately went to lift her to his face. The soft and familiar fabric was a nice contrast to his sweat-covered skin. He moved to sit crisscrossed, resting the tooka doll in his lap. Tears fell as he fiddled with the ears of the doll Tech had made him when they were cadets.
Nightmares have been pursuing Wrecker as their prey since they got back from their failed mission. And while Lula used to chase them away, she wasnât able to this time. Because the nightmares were real.
They happened, they werenât a reality he could run from.
He had always thought that he would have been the one to call out Plan 99âto go down for his vods. But here he was. Still here, still alive, while one of them wasnât. Because he wasnât able to reach him fast enough.Â
Because he failed.
Wrecker wiped away the tears before they fell, his lip pulling to a frown as he refrained from letting out a sob.Â
He was convinced that this was supposed to be easier. The Kaminoans made it seem like it would be. They all went through so much conditioning in case a vod was lost. Yet, despite that. Despite what he was told, he sat there, unable to grasp the idea of losing one of them, for as much as he knew, forever.Â
He gulped hard, he needed to be around someone. He shifted in the gunnerâs mount and made his way down, beloved Lula still in hand.
He looked to his side at the Navicomps, finding Hunter asleep. He hesitated in waking up his vod and decided to see if someone else was awake instead.
The silence was suddenly broken when footsteps began to thud throughout the shuttle, and you immediately recognized them as Wrecker. There was a momentary quiet before the door to the cockpit wooshed open. Wrecker, or who you assumed to be Wrecker, stood quietly at the entrance.
âYâ up?â He finally asked, attempting to be quiet in case you weren't. His voice was more graveled than usual from the lack of use.Â
âYeah, I'm awake.â You responded, turning your seat to face him. He still had his neck brace, and had Lula in one of his hands.Â
He stayed where he stood, shifting his weight again with a hand on the back of his head while the other continued to hold Lula.
âSâ okay uh⌠if I sit in here?â
You nodded, offering a gentle smile. He made his way to the copilot seat before easing himself down. He leaned back into the chair, eyes fixed on the sky in front of you.
âWhatâs Hunter up to?â you asked casually, attempting to make light conversation.
âHe fell asleep at the Navi. I didnât wanna wake 'em up.â He told you, rubbing one of Lula's arms between his pointer and thumb.Â
You hummed, not surprised. Youâve found Hunter like that a few times yourself recently; only sleeping in short bursts before he was working again. And while youâve insisted on him simply sleeping on a rack instead, he couldnât bring himself to. The idea of not doing anything made him restless. That was clear. But some sleep is always better than no sleep.
You both stared up at the water droplets coming and going. Lightning expertly streaked the clouds like they were a canvas and it was a master painter; thunder shaking the sky above not long after. Wrecker was almost completely silent beside you. After a few moments of shared quiet, you glanced at him, his form silhouetted in darkness, the glow of navigation screens illuminating the edges of his face. You cleared your throat.
âSoâŚHowâre ya holdinâ up?â you finally prompted. You already knew that answer. But you wanted him to know you were here for him.Â
Wrecker continued to face the windshield as he glanced at you with glassy eyes. He cleared his throat before he looked back to the glass as his lips tightened into a line. Only then did you notice the shake in his hands. How long have they been doing that?
âWreck?â you called for him softly, but he didnât give you a response. He merely put his head into his right hand, the flesh of his thumb and pointer finger covering his eyes. You shifted in your seat and leaned in, grabbing his left hand into yours. It continued to shake as his shoulders began to follow suit; Lula being left in his lap. You squeezed, and his calloused hand squeezed back. âWreckerâŚâ you gently pleaded.
He breathed in through his nose sharply before the thoughts that plagued him fell like an avalanche.
âI miss emâ. I miss Omega I miss Crosshair- I-â he swallowed hard, before trembling out, âI miss Tech. I shouldâve been able to reach him- he was right there but I couldnât,â his lips tightened âIâm sorry I couldnât-â was all he could get out before a sob interrupted him
You grabbed his cheek, âWrecker, look at meâŚâ you asked, silently begging him to oblige.
He lifted his head from his hand, looking at you with guilt-ridden eyes. You tilted your head to get a better look at him, eyebrows furrowed in concern.
âWrecker you need to understand that itâs not your fault. There was nothing you or anyone could have done. Tech⌠did what he knew would give us the best chance to get out. If there was another solution, he would have seen it,â you explained, tears pricking your own eyes. âThere was no time left.â
He leaned into the palm of your hand as it became wet with his tears.
âWhat if- what if heâs still out there? And we just left him behind?â Wrecker questioned, causing you to stiffen at the suggestion. You paused to think about what to say as he searched your eyes for answers. You haven't been able to accept such a permanent loss yourself. Instead, you had convinced yourself that he was out there. That you wouldn't allow yourself to admit to him being dead unless you had unshakeable proof. That's what kept you going. At Least for now.Â
âTech is a smart and strong man Wrecker. If he survived that fall⌠heâd find a way to get back to us- to contact us. But we canât risk going back, Wrecker. Not yet. Not when we have so few hands. Not when we're so low on everything. But⌠if heâs out there⌠weâll find him.âÂ
Wrecker nodded, squeezing his eyes shut. He had a hand on top of yours now, inaudibly pleading for touch. You leaned forward to press your forehead against his.
âMâ so scared. I don't know what I'd do- you, Hunter, and Echo are all I have left I-âÂ
âWe know Omega and Crosshair are still out there Wrecker. Weâll find them, weâll bring them home,â you assured, wiping away his stray tears as you spoke.
âWhat if-â he choked, not needing to finish his unspoken suggestion. You moved your hand from his cheek to the back of his head, holding it to your own.
âNo ifs, Wrecker. There are a lot of unknowns right now, and honestly, Iâm scared too. But we canât lose hope. We will search the ends of every galaxy if we have to. If it means our family will be together again. No matter how long that takes, we'll do it together,â you promised.
He gave you a quiet âokayâ, tears continuing to fall down his cheeks. Not a moment later you felt him leaning his body forward before pulling you into a desperate hug. You didnât hesitate to hug him back. His body racked with bone-deep shivers as he held onto you. As if you'd vanish if he didn't anchor you down.Â
You stayed there like that for a few moments. And part of it was admittedly for yourself just as much as it was for him. The hardships you've all experienced in just the past two weeks alone weighed on the depths of your soul. And now you felt you could finally permit yourself to feel them. You both needed to take a moment to cry it out. And that was easiest to do when you had Wrecker wrapped around you like this. The weight of his grip reminds you that he's real and that he's here. That you're here.Â
âIâm⌠happy youâre with us,â he said, his voice muffled against your shoulder as he gave you another squeeze.Â
You sniffled and gave a small lighthearted laugh in an attempt to ease him, ââCourse Iâm still here. Who elseâll keep you boys outta trouble when Echoâs away?â
He sniffled before giving you a short chuckle at the comment. You grinned to yourself, happy that you were able to get something out of him with that.
âBut in all seriousness, everything will be okay. Weâll get emâ back. Nonnaâ us are giving up on them, I promise.âÂ
He pulled away to look at you before wiping his eyes and smiling at you, wiping your tears off your cheeks when he saw them. âYeahâŚyouâre probably right,â he agreed sheepishly.
You shivered when the front of your body met the cold air, earning a concerned look from Wrecker.
âYou okay?â
You looked up at him confused until you realized what he was referring to.
âOh- yeah Iâm just cold,â you explained, leaning back in your seat, wishing you had a nice hot cup of caf in your hands.
Wrecker stared at the floor of the cockpit in thought before having an idea.
âCâmere,â he offered, patting his lap.
You raised an eyebrow at him, âYa sure?â
He nodded, placing his arms on the rests to give you more room to get onto his lap. You hesitantly accepted his offer, climbing onto him and disregarding your blanket. Immediately you were met with his warmth, it only increasing when he wrapped his arms around your middle. Lula ended up between you and his arms. Wrecker placed his head on top of yours, ignoring the momentary pain in his neck.
The clouds dissipated over the next hour, the rain softening in turn. You remained with him, both of you sinking into the co-pilot seat. You found yourselves admiring the constellations of this planet together, attempting to lock away the image of them into your memory. You don't remember the moments that came before sleep cradled you both. All you could remember was the feathery kiss that was placed on your head.
Hunter awoke with a crick in his neck from the odd position he had slept in. He attempted to rub out the discomfort with a groan before giving up and meekly accepting it to be his companion for the day. He could feel the rising sun, his senses easily picking up on the wavelengths it emitted.Â
He knew that if the sun was rising, that meant the time to leave and meet their contact was approaching. He stood up, rolling his shoulders before heading to the cockpit. He figured that was where you and Wrecker would be, picking up on your distinct scents.
And he was right. There you both were, sharing the copilot seat as you both slept; your hearts beating in time with one another. Wrecker held onto you like you were his Tooka doll, and you slept there comfortably. Though to Hunter's surprise, Wrecker moved his head to face him.
âShh, theyâre sleepinâ,â he scolded in a loud whisper.
Iâm SO excited to read more of this. Completely agree Fox is a grumpy cutie who needs reassurance, naps, blankies and the good caf. And I absolutely loved Thorn basically marching him for treatment and how he knew Fox would đŻ skip out the moment he wasnât looking đ
âFor the last time, I donât need a medic.â
Fox is trying to be polite about it, but the tone of his voice is bordering on a growl. Every push on his shoulder is a jab to his pride, making him hiss like an angry tooka-cat. He knows he's being ridiculous, but that's never stopped him before.
His patience is already thin, but it had been stretched to the breaking point by a series of unfortunate events over the course of the day. The first, and arguably the most annoying, had occurred at the beginning of his shift.
Fox had woken up late, and his alarm clock had gone off with a loud, obnoxious tone that had caused him to shoot straight up in his bed, slamming a fist onto the off button. He scrambled out of bed and dressed faster than he thought possible, then hurried into the mess hall for the early shift breakfast. He was late enough that the food line was empty, and his choice was between a bowl of sludgy porridge or an unidentifiable ration bar.
The ration bar had tasted like stale durasteel, and the porridge was more of a thick slop, so Fox had opted for the latter. He scarfed it down with a mug of caf after an overdrawn fight with the machine, which tried to refuse him more than one portion of caf. He had left the mess hall with his stomach growling and his mouth bitter with the aftertaste of the caf, and his mood had soured even further when he found the lift under maintenance, forcing him to take the stairs.
When he arrived at the office, there was an enormous stack of datapads on his desk. A new security system had just been installed throughout the city, and the details were apparently too sensitive to be kept on the holonet. The only copies of the schematics were the ones on the physical datapads, and Fox had the wonderful task of checking every single one.
By the time lunch came around, Fox had managed to read through half the stack despite the constant interruptions. Someone would come in and ask about some obscure policy, or a trooper would report that someone had thrown a bottle at him, and the Chancellor would call for updates, and all the while, Fox had to be careful not to crush the datapads with his gauntlets.
The Chancellor was especially persistent today, calling him in person to demand a detailed analysis of the new security measures. Fox was forced to leave the datapads behind in order to give him an impromptu briefing, which ended with the Chancellor dismissing him with a wave of his hand and a curt, "I'm sure you have more important things to attend to."
Fox was seething when he returned to his office, and in a last minute attempt to escape his prison and an effort to calm himself, he decided to walk the patrol route himself instead of sending a trooper.
Of course, this had to be the day that every citizen on Coruscant decided to commit a crime, from a jaywalking elderly woman to a pair of pickpockets that had made off with a trooper's blaster. There was an argument outside a bar, an illegal speeder chase, and a man had decided to start a fire in the middle of the street, and all this had happened in the span of less than two hours.
Thorn had thought it was funny, but Fox hadn't found it nearly as entertaining. And now, he's been injured during the scuffle with the firestarter, and Thorn is making a big fuss about it.
Fox's shoulder throbs with pain as he moves, and he tries to ignore the way the skin is tightening around the wound. It's only a scratch, but it's deep, and Fox can feel blood oozing out of the cut and dripping down his armor. His head is pounding, and his chest aches from having been slammed against the duracrete by the man's boot.
A hand presses down on his shoulder, and Fox flinches away with another hiss. He turns on Thorn with a scowl
"I'm fine," he growls, shrugging Thorn's hand off his shoulder. "Leave it alone."
"Fox," Thorn says. He's trying to sound reasonable, but Fox can hear the exasperation in his voice. "It's a karking gash on your arm. I can't leave it alone."
Fox rolls his eyes. "I'm not letting you drag me back to the medbay for something as minor as this," he says. He turns and starts walking, heading towards the Senate building. "We've got more important things to do."
"I'm not dragging you to the medbay," Thorn says, running to catch up. He grabs Fox's arm and yanks him to a stop. "You're going to GMF. It's on the way to the Senate anyway."
"What? No!" Fox sputters, but Thorn is already pulling him down the street. He digs his heels into the ground, but Thorn is stronger than he is, and the other commander pulls him forward without breaking his stride.
"You're coming with me whether you like it or not," Thorn says, his voice firm. He doesn't loosen his grip, and Fox can only follow along helplessly. "The office will survive without you for a couple of hours."
"Thorn, you're notâ"
"Yes, I am."
Fox scowls. Thorn isn't budging, and neither is he, and they've reached a stalemate. He's considering the merits of just sitting down and refusing to move, but before he can even make a decision, they're already at GMF.
"Let's go," Thorn says, pulling him up the steps. "Just stop trying to act tough and get over yourself."
Fox wants to protest, but Thorn has an iron grip on his arm, and he doesn't want to risk a public spectacle, so he allows himself to be pulled inside.
"Fine," he huffs. He can already feel a headache coming on, and his stomach is still grumbling in protest at its meager breakfast. Maybe he'll be able to sneak away before anyone notices, and no one will ever know that the Commander of the Guard was seen at GMF for such a minor injury.
"That's the spirit," Thorn says, grinning. He pulls on Fox's arm again, and this time, Fox lets himself be dragged away.
They've been sitting in the waiting room for a few minutes, and Fox is already starting to regret his decision. It's a busy day at GMF, and a steady stream of injured people are filing into the building, filling the waiting room with a cacophony of moans and groans.
Fox's shoulder is starting to throb again, and the wound is leaking blood into the fabric of his blacks. Thorn is tapping his fingers on the armrest of his chair, his expression thoughtful.
"I wonder how many people are in here because of you," he says, looking around the room. There's a group of young men sitting on the opposite side of the room, nursing a variety of wounds. "They must be getting sick of seeing the Guard around here."
Fox glares at him, and Thorn chuckles.
"You'd think they'd learn their lesson and stop committing crimes," Fox mutters.
"We'd all like that," he laughs. "But we both know that won't happen."
Fox sighs, leaning back against the wall. He shifts slightly, trying to find a comfortable position. He's still annoyed about his arm, and now the smell of bacta is starting to get to him. It had always had a pungent, chemical smell to him, and the scent of the various medical supplies is making him queasy.Â
He can feel his stomach starting to churn, and he closes his eyes, trying to focus on his breathing. The bright fluorescent lights are only making things worse, and the sound of the door sliding open and closed as various people walked in and out of the medical wing is grating on his nerves.
It doesn't help that Thorn is sitting right next to him, staring him down like he's a suspect in an interrogation. He'd caught on to Fox's plan to slip away almost as soon as they'd stepped into the room, and Fox had been forced to endure his company as they waited for their turn.
"How long is this going to take?"
"They said they were pretty busy today," Thorn says. "I'm not sure, but you're probably going to be waiting for a while."
"Great."
"Don't be such a baby. It'll be over before you know it."
Fox groans and leans back in his chair. He can't help but think of all the work that he should be doing right now. The stack of datapads has probably gotten taller since they left the office, and he'll have even more work to do once he returns.
He hates the feeling of wasting time, especially when there's so much to be done, and at this rate, he'll be lucky if he manages to finish the rest of his work by nightfall. And that was if the Chancellor didn't call him again.
"You should go back," Fox says, looking up at Thorn. "I can handle this."
Thorn raises an eyebrow, giving him an incredulous look.
"And let you weasel your way out of getting that arm checked out?" he scoffs. "I don't think so."
Fox shoots him a glare, but Thorn only grins.
"Nice try, but no," he says. "I'm not letting you out of my sight."
"Thornâ"
"I'm not going anywhere."
Fox sighs and slumps in his seat. He can see that Thorn isn't going to budge, and he doesn't have the energy to argue with him. His shoulder is really starting to hurt now, and the bleeding hasn't slowed down yet. He's getting dizzy, and the queasiness is growing stronger
He closes his eyes, resting his head against the wall. He feels terrible, and the longer he sits here, the worse he feels. The smell of the bacta is making his stomach turn, and the noise and chaos in the room is starting to get to him.
The medical center always brings back memories of the Kaminoans, and he was usually only ever here when one of his brothers was seriously injured. He doesn't have fond feelings towards the place.
"This is a waste of time," Fox mutters. "I could be working, or doing literally anything else right now."
"You know it's not a waste of time," Thorn says. He's looking around the room, keeping a close eye on the other people. "You're injured, and you need to get that taken care of. Stop being such a stubborn di'kut."
Fox is about to say something in response, his eyes land on a medical droid heading their way. He lets out a sigh of relief and gets to his feet. Finally, his suffering is about to end.
"Commander Fox?" the medical droid asks, stopping in front of him with a metallic whir.
"Yes, that's me."
"Please follow me. We're ready for you now."
"Finally," Fox mutters, ignoring Thorn's chuckle.Â
He follows the droid down a long, white corridor, his footsteps echoing against the tile floor. He keeps his eyes forward, refusing to look back at Thorn. He doesn't want to see the smug look on his brother's face.
After a few minutes, the droid leads them into an examination room and motions for him to sit down on the cot. Fox complies, perching on the edge of the thin mattress and crossing his arms, trying not to fidget, and Thorn takes a seat in the chair in the corner of the room.
The droid is quick and efficient, running the scanner over his shoulder and chest and checking the readouts. It tells him that he'll need some stitches and bacta treatment, and Fox sigh, nodding his agreement.
"Thank you, Commander," the droid says. It stands still for a moment, processing its data, and then turns and exits the room.
"You're not getting out of this one," Thorn says as soon as the doors shut behind the droid.
"I know," Fox grumbles, slumping in his seat. He rests his elbows on his knees, his hands clasped together. "I just want to get this over with."
Thorn shakes his head, a smile playing across his lips. He doesn't say anything, but Fox knows he's just happy to have won. They're both competitive, and any victory, no matter how small, is something to celebrate.
"Stop that," Fox snaps. He doesn't want to deal with Thorn's smugness. He's already irritated, and the last thing he needs is for his brother to rub his victory in his face.
"Stop what?" Thorn asks, feigning innocence.
âThat thing that youâre doing with your face.â
âItâs called smiling, Fox, you should try it sometime. I think you could use the practice,â Thorn teases, and Fox rolls his eyes.
Before he can come up with a retort, the door opens, and Fox reflexively straightens, preparing himself for the worst. The medical droids aren't exactly known for their gentle touches and bedside manner.
To his surprise, the person who enters the room isn't a medical droid.Â
Fox feels his eyes widen as he takes in the decidedly human figure standing in the doorway, a datapad in hand. Wearing a crisp, clean set of medical whites, you stand tall, and his first thought is that you're beautiful.
His second thought is that you look far too cheerful for someone working in a medical facility. Your eyes are bright, and you're smiling, and the expression is so warm and genuine that it makes him wonder how you're managing to maintain it in a place like this.
It's a nice smile.
It isn't until Thorn clears his throat that Fox realizes he's been staring at you for the last few seconds, and he hastily looks away just as you glance up from the datapad.
"Hello," you say, your voice soft. "Commander Fox, is it?"
"Y-yes," he manages to reply, feeling his cheeks flush.
"And I'm Commander Thorn," Thorn chimes in, and he shoots him a smug look when Fox turns to glare at him.
"Well, hello," you say. Your voice is warm and melodic, and your eyes are sparkling. "It's a pleasure to meet you both."
"The pleasure's all mine," Thorn replies, flashing you a grin.
"Yeah," Fox mumbles. "Pleasure."
He's never felt so awkward in his life, and he's suddenly acutely aware of the blood on his armor, the way his hair is sticking up in all directions, and the fact that he hasn't slept in a couple days. You, on the other hand, look fresh and put together, and you're practically glowing.
You introduce yourself, and you give them a brief summary of your qualifications and experience. Fox doesn't pay much attention to what you're saying. He's too busy trying not to stare at you, and it isn't until he hears the word 'bacta' that he snaps back to reality.
"Wait, what?" he asks.
"Bacta," you repeat, tilting your head slightly. "It's a healing substance that stimulates the body's natural ability to regenerate tissue."
"I know what bacta is," he says, his tone coming out harsher than he intended.
You blink at him, clearly startled by his response, and Fox feels his face heating up.
"Right," you say, clearing your throat. You offer him a small, polite smile, and he looks away, embarrassed. "As I was saying, we'll need to administer a small dose of bacta to the area where the injury occurred. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes."
"Fine." Fox crosses his arms and tries not to scowl, and you turn away, tapping on your datapad again. Thorn kicks him in the shin, and Fox gives him a look. The other commander gestures with his eyes to you, and Fox frowns, shaking his head.
"Do you have any allergies or medical conditions?" you ask, looking up from the screen.
"No," Fox says, shifting uncomfortably on the bed. The mattress is far too thin, and the metal frame is digging into the back of his knees. "I already told the droid."
"Right," you say. "Just making sure."
Fox glances over at Thorn, who gives him an exasperated look, and Fox sighs. He knows that he's being difficult, but he can't seem to stop himself. His shoulder hurts, his head is throbbing, and his stomach is rumbling, and he just wants to get this over with so he can return to the office and finally finish the rest of his work.
He looks back at you and sees that you're staring at him. You're looking at him with concern, and your lips are pressed into a thin line. You're not smiling anymore, and Fox feels a twinge of guilt.
"You don't have to be nervous," you say. "This is going to be a quick procedure, and it won't hurt at all. We'll use a local anesthetic and numbing spray, and you won't feel a thing."
"I'm not nervous," Fox protests, his face flushing. "I just don't have time for this."
"I understand," you say, and your expression softens. "But this is important, and we need to make sure that you're taken care of."
Fox wants to argue, but there's a hint of steel in your tone, and the look in your eyes is firm. You're clearly not going to let him get out of this, and he sighs, resigning himself to his fate.
"Alright," he says, reluctantly.
"Great," you say, giving him a small, reassuring smile.
He feels a little better when you smile at him, and he tries not to smile back. You turn away, busying yourself with setting up the equipment, and Fox takes the opportunity to look at you again. You're standing with your back to him, and he can see the outline of your figure through your medical whites. You're not very tall, but you're not short either, and he wonders how old you are. You can't be older than twenty-five, he guesses, but it's hard to tell with natborns.
"How did you get that injury, anyway?" you ask, glancing over your shoulder.
"Work-related incident," Fox says. He doesn't want to tell you the truth. He doesn't want you to think he's a clumsy idiot, or that he can't do his job properly.
"Oh," you say, sounding a little surprised. You turn back to the equipment, and he can see the muscles in your back tense. "That sounds... dangerous."
"It's nothing," Fox says, his voice low. "I can handle it."
"Of course," you say softly. You turn around and walk over to the cot, your gaze focused on the equipment. "Okay, armor off, Commander. Let's see it."
Fox stiffens, his heart skipping a beat. "Iâwhat?"
"The injury," you say, your brow furrowing slightly. You reach over and brush your fingers against his arm. "Is something wrong?"
"No," Fox says, a little too quickly.Â
Thorn lets out a snort, and Fox glares at him. He just raises an eyebrow, a knowing smirk on his face, and Fox rolls his eyes.
"Sorry, it's been a long day," he says as he turns back to you. "Just a bit tired, is all."
"That's understandable," you say, your lips curving into a small, sympathetic smile. "If it makes you feel any better, I've been on my feet since 0600."
"I think you win," Fox says, his voice dry.
You let out a small, breathy laugh, and his heart skips a beat again. It's a nice sound, and he feels a strange surge of pride at having caused it.
He was truly terrible at making small talk, and most people found his dry sense of humor off-putting. The fact that you had laughed at his words, even if it had been a polite, professional laugh, was surprising. It was hard not to see it as a small victory in an otherwise terrible day.
You smile at him again, and he feels a sudden urge to smile back. You look like you're about to say something, but then your datapad beeps, and the moment is lost.
"I'll be right back," you say. "Just got to check something."
You step out of the room, and Fox lets out a breath, relieved that you're gone. He hadn't expected you to be so friendly, or to be so concerned about him. Most natborns just saw the troopers as an extension of their equipment, and they only spoke to him if there was a problem. You're different, though, and it's unnerving.
"You're blushing."
"What?" Fox sputters, turning to Thorn. "What are you talking about?"
"Your face is red," Thorn says with a wide grin.
"It's the lights," he says, pointing to the ceiling. "They're too bright."
"I didn't know we could blush," Thorn teases. "That's kinda cute."
"Shut up."
"Oh, come on. You can't tell me you're not at least a little bit interested."
Fox sighs and shakes his head. "Not now, Thorn. We're in a medical center, not a bar."
"Good thing, too." Thorn stands up and starts to help him unlatch his armor, a smirk on his face. "Cause if we were, you wouldn't have a chance. She's way out of your league."
"You're the worst," Fox says, and he swats Thorn's hands away and reaches up to unfasten his shoulder plates himself.
"She's pretty," Thorn continues, ignoring him. He pulls off Fox's pauldrons and sets them on the ground. "And she's not scared of you, either. That's a first."
"Yeah, well, she works in a medical facility," Fox mutters, slipping out of his cuirass. "They must have taught her how to deal with difficult patients."
"Maybe," Thorn says. He removes the rest of Fox's armor, placing it carefully on the ground, and then steps back. "But I don't think that's it. She's nice."
"She's paid to be nice."
"That's not fair, and you know it."
"I don't need you playing matchmaker," Fox grumbles.
"Fine," Thorn says, crossing his arms. "But if you don't ask for her frequency, I will."
Fox's eyes widen. "Don't you dareâ"
The doors slide open again, and you step inside, your expression bright. "Sorry about that."
Your gaze is focused on the gloves you're pulling over your hands as you walk in, but as soon as you look up, your smile vanishes, and you freeze. Your eyes are fixed on his arm, and Fox quickly glances down, noticing the large dark patch of blood seeping through his undershirt.
"Oh, Commander!" you exclaim, hurrying towards him.
"It's not that bad," he says. He hadn't realized how bad it was until now, and his heart is pounding in his chest. "I'm fine."
"No, you're not." Your tone is stern, and he finds himself shrinking back a little under your intense gaze. "Now sit still."
Fox does as he's told, watching as you pull a stool over and set up a tray. Your movements are swift and practiced, and you don't seem at all bothered by the amount of blood. You're frowning, but your eyes are calm, and Fox finds himself relaxing a little.
"Let's get this over with," you mutter.
You're not smiling anymore, and it unsettles him. He'd thought that he had imagined the steel in your voice earlier, but now he can hear it clearly, and it sends a shiver down his spine.
"Yes, sir," he says, trying to lighten the mood.
"It's doctor, actually."
Fox winces.
"My mistake," he mutters, his voice apologetic. "Force of habit."
You look at him, and he thinks he sees the barest hint of a smile tugging at the corners of your lips, but before he can be sure, your face is composed and neutral again.
"Would you prefer I cut the sleeve off, or would you rather take it off yourself?"
"I'll do it."
You nod, and he lifts his arms, peeling the soaked fabric away from his skin. His stomach clenches at the sight of the deep, bloody gash, and the stench of copper is heavy in the air. He can feel the blood beginning to trickle down his arm, and the sight of his pale, slick flesh is almost enough to make him vomit.
"Are you okay?" you ask, placing a hand on his uninjured shoulder.
"Yeah," Fox manages. He's feeling a little woozy, but he tries to push it down. "I'll be fine."
You give him a sympathetic look, and he looks away, his gaze fixed on the wall.
"Okay," you say. You grab a vial and a syringe and inject it into his arm. "This should help numb the pain. Try not to move."
Fox nods, and you lean closer, gently cleaning the wound. The smell of the disinfectant is strong, and he forces himself to focus on your face instead. Your expression is calm, and you're humming softly as you work, and he finds himself relaxing a little more.
"How did this happen, anyway?"
"Like I said, it's work-related."
"So it was a knife, then?"
Fox glances at the gash, and he nods. He can't tell if the cut is deep enough to require stitches or not, and he's a little worried that the knife might have hit an artery.
"You're going to have a nice scar."
"Good. It'll match the others," he mutters, his tone flat.
You pause for a moment, looking at him. Your expression is unreadable, but there's a sadness in your eyes that he doesn't understand. You resume cleaning the wound, and he tries not to think about it.
"Do you always go out in the field?" you ask.
"Sometimes."
"And do you usually get injured like this?"
"It's not uncommon."
"Hmm." You're quiet for a few moments, and then you glance up at him, your eyes filled with concern. "You're very brave."
Fox is stunned. No one has ever said anything like that to him before, and it catches him off guard. He doesn't know how to respond, and he just sits there, staring at you. You don't seem to mind, and you return your attention to his wound.
"This is a lot deeper than I thought," you murmur. "It'll need a few stitches."
"Okay," he says, his voice soft.
"Try to relax," you say, gently touching his arm.
He nods, and you begin to sew up the wound. He tries not to think about the fact that the needle is digging into his flesh, and instead focuses on the feeling of your gloved hands on his skin. They're gentle and warm, and the scent of the disinfectant is beginning to fade, replaced by the faintest trace of flowers.
He can't remember the last time someone touched him so tenderly. His brothers are rarely so careful, and most people who touch him are doing so with the intention of causing him harm. It's a pleasant change, and he finds himself enjoying it more than he expected.
"Sorry," you say, glancing up at him. "Almost done."
"Take your time," Fox replies. "I'm in no rush."
That's patently untrue, but the lie slips from his lips easily, and he's rewarded by a smile. He can see Thorn giving him a pointed look, and he knows that his brother will never let him live it down. But right now, he doesn't care.
The smell of flowers grows stronger, and he realizes that it's coming from you. The scent is subtle, but pleasant, and he's surprised by how much he likes it. He wonders what the source is. Is it your hair? Your skin? Or maybe it's something you wear, like perfume. He can't quite tell, and the mystery is starting to bother him.
You finish suturing his wound, and you dab some bacta gel over the stitches, sealing them. The sensation is cool and soothing, and Fox lets out a soft sigh of relief.
"How does that feel?" you ask.
"Better."
"Good," you say, your expression softening. You reach out and squeeze his uninjured shoulder, and Fox's eyes widen slightly at the unexpected gesture. "You should be all set, Commander."
"Thanks," he says, and the word sounds awkward in his ears. He's never thanked anyone for treating his wounds before. Usually, it was a medic droid, or another trooper, and his thanks were never required. But somehow, the words seem necessary now.
"Of course," you say, a hint of surprise in your voice. You remove your gloves, tossing them in the bin, and turn to clean up your equipment. "Do you have any other injuries, Commander? Any other...work-related incidents?"
"No, nothing else."
"Good." You stand up and stretch, and Fox takes the opportunity to admire the shape of your body. He can't help himself, and he quickly looks away, a flush rising on his cheeks.
"Thank you," Thorn chimes in, and Fox nearly jumps out of his skin. He had almost forgotten that the other commander was there, and his brother is looking at him with a knowing smile.
"You're welcome," you say, smiling at Thorn. You turn to Fox and offer him a smile, too, and he tries to smile back. It probably looks more like a grimace, and he quickly drops it.
"Now, remember, if that gets infected, or the stitches come loose before they dissolve, I want you to come right back, okay? No excuses."
"Got it," Fox replies.
"I mean it, Commander," you say, and you give him a stern look. "Don't make me hunt you down."
Fox blinks, his heart skipping a beat. You're serious, and he finds himself nodding, agreeing without thinking.
"Yes, sir," he says, and then mentally curses himself. "Doctor."
You chuckle, and the sound makes his chest tighten. It's the nicest sound he's heard all day, and he can't help but smile. You give him a playful salute, and he returns it, and you laugh again.
"Well, I hope we don't see each other anytime soon," you say, grinning.
"Me, too," Fox mutters, before he stiffens. "I meaâ"
"I know what you mean," you say, your eyes sparkling. You hold out a hand, and he hesitates for a moment before taking it. Your skin is warm, and his breath catches in his throat when you gently squeeze his hand. "Take care, Commander."
"You, too," he says, and your smile widens.Â
You pick up your datapad and step around the cot, moving towards the door. As you pass him, Fox catches another hint of the flowery scent, and his eyes widen. Lavender. It's lavender.
"Have a good day, gentlemen," you say. You flash him one last smile, and then you're gone.
He lets out a long, slow breath, trying to process what just happened. He feels... strange. There's an odd warmth in his chest, and he's still not quite sure what it is. He doesn't think it's anything bad, but it's new, and he doesn't know what to do with it. Maybe it's the blood loss. Or the painkillers. Or maybe it's the bacta. Yeah, it's probably the bacta.
Thorn slaps him on the back, and he lets out a startled noise, nearly falling off the cot.
"I don't know what the hell that was," Thorn says, chuckling. "But it was the most pathetic thing I've ever seen."
"Shut up."
"Seriously," he continues. "She's definitely way out of your league. I might even say she's way out of mine."
"I'm leaving," Fox grumbles. He grabs his armor and starts putting it on, trying not to wince as the plates rub against the bandages. "Get out of my way."
"Sure, sure," Thorn says, stepping aside. He gives Fox a sidelong glance, a mischievous look in his eyes. "Just make sure you give her your frequency."
Fox stops, his helmet half-on. He stares at Thorn, his mouth agape, and then turns away, pulling his bucket on over his head. He's not about to give Thorn the satisfaction of an answer. Not when his brother is clearly enjoying his discomfort so much.
He stalks out of the room, his boots echoing against the tile floor. Thorn follows, laughing, and Fox can feel his cheeks burning. He keeps his head down, his shoulders hunched, and he's determined not to speak another word.Â
As they walk through the lobby, he notices you standing at the desk, speaking to the receptionist. You're not smiling anymore, but Fox can still see the ghost of it on your lips, and he feels the strange warmth growing inside him.
Thorn elbows him, and Fox lets out a hiss, glaring at him through his visor. He's already starting to regret allowing Thorn to drag him here. This whole experience had been far more traumatic than the injury itself, and he would have been better off ignoring it. But as he looks back at you, his gaze lingering on your form, he finds that he doesn't really regret it. At least not entirely.
The receptionist hands you a datapad, and you nod, thanking her. You turn and look at him, and he quickly ducks his head, pretending to adjust his pauldron.
"Commander!" you call out. "Wait a moment."
Fox stops, and Thorn snorts. He turns and sees you approaching, a small smile on your lips.
"Forget something?" he asks, and he winces internally at how gruff his voice sounds.
"Yes, actually," you say, stopping in front of him.
"Okay," he says slowly. He doesn't really understand why you're talking to him again, but he's not complaining. "What is it?"
"Your frequency."
Fox freezes, his eyes widening. He can't believe what he's hearing, and for a moment, he's convinced that he's misheard. It doesn't seem possible. Not with how the day has gone so far.
He glances over at Thorn, who's practically vibrating with excitement, and he quickly turns back to you, his heart racing.
"Uh..."
"I'll have the receptionist check in on you every few days, just to make sure everything is healing up okay," you continue. You hold out your datapad, and he takes it automatically. "But if there's any complications, or you notice anything unusual, don't hesitate to contact me, okay?"
The breath leaves his lungs, and he's grateful for the bucket over his head. Right. Of course. You're his doctor. This is completely professional. The disappointment that floods his veins is surprising, and he mentally scolds himself. What had he been expecting, anyway?
âThat wonât be necessary," he says, handing the datapad back. "But thank you."
You frown. "Commander..."
"It's fine." He turns and gestures for Thorn to follow. "Come on, we've got work to do."
He can hear Thorn muttering behind him, and he knows that his brother is probably annoyed, but he doesn't care. The warmth inside him has vanished, replaced by an uncomfortable numbness. He doesn't know what he was hoping for, and he's glad that the conversation is over. It's better this way.
You call out after him, but he ignores you, and within moments, he's out of the building and back on the street. Thorn is right behind him, and they start the long trek back to the office.
"I can't believe you just did that," Thorn mutters.
"Did what?" Fox asks. He doesn't look at him, keeping his eyes fixed forward. He can feel his face heating up, and he's suddenly feeling very tired.
"You're an idiot," Thorn says, shaking his head.
"Shut up."
They walk in silence for a few minutes, and Fox tries not to think about the conversation. It doesn't matter, and it's better to just forget it.
He's been doing this job long enough to know that itâs dangerous to get attached to people, especially when they were civilians. Things never worked out, and the risk of getting hurt was too great. He'd seen too many of his brothers get their hearts broken by the citizens they were trying to protect, and he wasn't about to let that happen to him. It wasn't worth it. And you weren't special, anyway. You were just another natborn.
He repeats these thoughts to himself over and over, and eventually, he starts to believe them. The warmth inside him disappears, and the numbness returns. He's relieved. He's finally starting to get his head on straight, and the sooner he forgets about you, the better.
And yet, when they reach the Senate building, Fox hesitates. His eyes wander towards the medical center towering over the cityscape, and he feels a twinge in his chest. He tries to ignore it, and he continues walking, heading towards the office. But the ache doesn't go away, and the image of your smile lingers in his mind, taunting him.
He doesn't know why it bothers him so much. He'd only just met you, and it was nothing but a brief conversation. There was no reason to be upset. But somehow, it feels like something was taken from him. And he can't figure out what it was.
Crosshair had been called many things in his life. Talented, cocky, aloof to name a few. No one had ever called him a coward though. It was in his very nature to look at the impossible and find a way.
The odds didnât matter.
He and his brothers had faced forces that would have given much larger squads pause, and theyâd never hesitated. Never felt like they couldnât get the job done.
Yet there he was, stomach twisted into knots, muscles in his legs twitching with the desire to bolt, afraid. Not afraid of a battalion of clankers, rollies, and spiders.
No. He was afraid of a nat born medic, who clutched Wreckerâs arm like a lifeline during turbulence. A medic who could sew up her own wounded leg without batting an eye, but would discharge her blaster at the sight of an insect. A medic who was the epitome of soft, yet had the power to crush him in the palm of her hand.
Heâd never told anyone he cared for them, nor had he asked anyone what they felt for him. Quite frankly he didnât give a fuck. The fleeting attentions of strangers, whose names he would forget immediately, had been more than enough to scratch the well-concealed itch for a semblance of connection.
Now, you were ruining him without even trying. Punching a hole straight through his carefully crafted armor. Making him weak.
And in a few moments, depending on your reaction, you could break all five of them. Clone Force 99 could be brought to its knees by you in a single instant.
He watched his brothers as they led you towards the location Tech had chosen. Excitement radiated off of you like a sunâs rays. He would never admit it, but he was dying to be wrong this time. He wanted to believe that you could love them. That you could love him.
Blindfolded, you were unable to see the looks of hope and affection etched onto their shared features. You were simply excited for another adventure with them. Hunterâs hands rested securely on your shoulders with your hands over them.
The sergeant had woken you up upon landing with a bandana in hand.
âWeâve got a surprise for you,â he said, as you got dressed.
âReally?â you asked, mind racing as you tried to imagine what it was. It wasnât your birthday, their decant day, or any other holiday. Not that it mattered. The fact that the five of them had formed a plan to surprise you damn near made your brain short circuit. That showed a level of care and consideration you had rarely even received from people you were seriously dating.
âYep, gotta make sure you donât peek though,â he said waving the bandana.
You resisted the urge to make a filthy joke about being tied up for them and instead turned so Hunter could tie the bandana on. The world went dark, and you took a nervous breath until you felt Hunterâs hands on your shoulders, and you relaxed. He would never let anything happen to you.
âWhereâs my bucket?â You asked, suddenly feeling naked without it.
âYou wonât need it here,â Hunter said, steering you towards the door.
âIs this some kind of initiation thing?â you asked, breaking the silence. âTesting my bravery to prove Iâm one of you?â
Wrecker snorted, âThatâs a pretty good idea! We could dangle you over a cliff by your ankle?â
âIf I donât scream, Iâm in?â You asked with a giggle.
âGrow up, you two,â Crosshair said, and you swore you could hear him rolling his eyes.
ââŚyes.â Wrecker whispered in answer to your question, setting off more giggles.
âWeâve got a little hike coming up, so one of us will carry you,â Hunter said, as you all came to a stop.
Even blindfolded you knew where all of them were by their steps. You reached for Wrecker, but Hunter caught your hand.
âWreckerâs got his hands full,â Hunter said, and you could hear a smile in his voice. It made your stomach flip with excitement.
âOoooh, the plot thickens.â You stepped forward and instead found Techâs shoulders, wrapping your arms around him. You made a soft noise of surprise, as he grabbed your thighs, and hoisted you off the ground easily.
âAre you comfortable?â Tech asked.
âYes, sir,â you reply, face pressed against the side of Techâs helmet.
You hum softly, listening to the sound of your squadsâ steps, mind conjuring all sorts of fantastic scenarios for what they could have planned.
It was quiet and warm, and you could hear their boots crunching over dry ground, so you knew you werenât on Kamino. You had been sleeping for the majority of the trip, and blindfolded before stepping off of the ship, so you couldnât use the stars for clues.
You hummed softly as the trek continued, occasionally grinning when Wrecker would chuckle at some joke from Echo you couldnât quite make out. You were close to beginning a round of âAre we there yet?â when Tech stopped, and slowly released his grip on your thighs.
âWe have arrived at our intended destination,â he said, as you got your feet under yourself after several minutes of being carried.
Hunter removed the bandana, and you looked around. A small city twinkled in the valley below your position atop a massive hill. You looked to the rich blue night sky above, and connected the stars. Your brow furrowed a moment before the realization hit you. You were homeâŚwell, your home world. Home was the Marauder now. A lump formed in your throat, and tears pooled in your eyes.
âYou brought me home?â You asked, turning to face them, smiling even as the tears poured down your face.
âWe missed you, and we thought this would be a good welcome home surprise,â Echo said.
âIt was Hunterâs idea,â Tech supplied.
âOh, Hunter, this is perfect!â You wrapped your arms around his waist and rested your head against his chest. âThank you.â
Hunter held you close a moment, before releasing you slowly to smile down at you.
âThis is a pretty special spot, you know?â You asked tucking your arms behind your back and rising up on the balls of your feet.
âYes, I selected it for that very reason. The local population has designated this as a place to share important news with loved ones,â Tech said, clearly proud of himself.
âRight as always, Tech,â you beamed at him. âPlanning to share some news?â
âActually we thought today might be a nice day to teach you some Mandoâa, so you know what weâre saying to you,â Hunter said nodding towards Wrecker, who took a deep breath and stepped up to take your hands.
âFinally!â You cheered, buzzing with excitement.
A bright smile lit up your features as you looked up at him. He smiled warmly, eyes roaming your face. Youâd only been gone a couple of weeks, but Wrecker had missed you fiercely every moment.
âWell, we call you âmeshâlaâ cause it means beautiful. Easy to see why. You are beautiful inside and out,â Wrecker said before taking you gently by your arms and pressing a kiss to the top of your head.
Your heart jumped and your breath hitched. You cleared your throat and said, âI knew I liked that one.â
He smiled warmly, and stepped to the side, gently guiding you to Echo, who took one of your hands next. He rested his scomplink against your waist, and you held his bicep, as you beamed expectantly at him.
âWe call you âsaraadâ because it means flower. You make every place youâre in brighter, more alive.â Echo kissed your forehead, and you felt anticipation buzzing in your chest. Your heart beat faster than before, as Tech took his place before you could even react.
âSenaarâika means little bird. You are always eager to take flight whether you are ready or not. Brave, reckless to be certain, but brave nonetheless,â straight to the point as ever, Tech pressed a kiss to your cheek.
You released a shuddering breath, your face warming up under their gentle affections. Am I dreaming? You thought, now scared to move or speak for fear of breaking the spell they were weaving around you.
Hunter hesitated only a moment before resting a hand on your waist, as the other cupped your cheek, his thumb rubbing soothingly over your cheekbone. Your eyes met his, as you placed your hands on his chest and held your breath.
ââCyareâ is one youâve heard more and more lately. The closest word in basic is beloved,â Hunter said, and you knew heâd heard your heart skip a beat before racing away.
âYouâre special to us, and we want to keep you closeâŚcloser,â Hunter took a deep breath, his warm brown eyes held yours. âWeâve fallen for you, and we hope thatâs ok. Nothing has to change if you donât want it to.â
âYouâve fallen for me? I-, IâŚI canât evenâŚâ you stammered, simultaneously thrilled and confused. You took a deep breath, lifting one hand to rest over his against your face, the other sliding up to caress his face.
âIs it ok, if I kiss you now?â He asked. You nodded immediately.
He smiled and leaned down to press his lips to yours. You didnât wake up. His arm wrapped around your waist, and you knew it was real. He pulled back and pressed his forehead to yours.
âBeen wanting to do that for awhile now,â he confessed.
âThat makes two of usâŚor maybe 6 of us,â you said with a nervous laugh.
Youâd thought of no less than a dozen different scenarios when Hunter had blindfolded you, but you never imagined this could be a possibility. Not even in your wildest dreams did you allow yourself to believe that the 5 amazing men standing before you could care for you the way you cared for them.
Thereâs a relieved sigh from behind Hunter, and you leaned around him to see Crosshair properly. His eyes were taking you in much like he had upon your return. Drinking you in while he figured out what to say. You looked up at Hunter, and he nodded, stepping back to give you a path to Crosshair. Taking a deep breath, you make your way towards the sniper.
For the first time since you met him, you reached for Crosshair, taking hold of him with confidence. Your eyes met his, a light smile playing on your lips.
âAny special words you wanna teach me, Crosshair?â You asked, hoping your voice was steady.
âYou already know my favorite word for you. The one thatâs been going through my mind since you left,â Crosshair said quietly, bringing his lips within an inch of yours.
âAnd what word would that be?â you asked, moving closer to let your lips brush his.
âMine,â he said before closing the distance between you, kissing you with relief. The first kiss had been almost hesistant, as a part of him was sure he was stealing affection that wasnât meant for him. But it was meant for him. You wanted himâŚall of them. You werenât running away or pulling back. You were in his arms, holding him close like he belonged to you.
Wrecker cleared his throat noisily, and Crosshair broke the kiss to give him a look.
âJust for that, you can go last,â Crosshair sneered, guiding you towards Tech, who pulled you close and let his arms settle comfortably around your waist. Just like before your arms rested over his shoulders, this time your fingers carded gently through his hair.
âI hope that you will be willing to answer a few questions for me, senaarâika. I have been compiling data for quite some time, and despite todayâs success, I still have some theories to test in order to draw definitive conclusions.â
âIâll indulge your experiments, if youâll indulge mine,â you said with a mysterious little smile.
âWell, of course, I am more than happy to assist in the pursuit of knowledge,â Tech replied. Happy with your response he leaned in to brush his lips softly over yours. You whined, wanting more, and he pressed closer, letting you feel his need for you. Techâs kiss was just like him, a curious exploration that left you giddy.
He pulled back, and opened his mouth to say more, but Wrecker cut him off, âMaker, Tech, you can talk her ear off later. Weâve still got another thing to give her!â
âDespite the rudeness of his delivery, Wrecker is correct. We do have another surprise for you,â Tech said, releasing you slowly, as Echo moved close to pull you into his arms.
âI almost slipped up and kissed you last night, so I may need to make up for that,â Echo said, before kissing you slow and deep. You were so sure your heart was actually going to break its way out of your ribcage if they kept going at this rate.
âStars, Echo, I can think of a few more things for you to make up,â you said breathlessly, as he pulled back with a grin.
âFinally!â Wrecker said, spinning you around and scooping you up into his arms to press the softest kiss of all to your lips. He handled you with such care and affection, you couldnât help but sigh happily against his lips.
âKriff me, if Iâd known this would happen, Iâd have left sooner,â you said with a laugh, as Wrecker set you back down on your feet.
âWell, no more running off to help Cody because we missed you too much,â Wrecker said, caressing your face gently.
âI promise I wonât be doing that again for quite some time,â you confessed.
âGood, because Cross here, was worse than usual,â Hunter teased.
Crosshair scowled and folded his arms. âJust tell her the next surprise.â
âYou belong with us no matter what, so Crosshair gave your helmet a little update,â Echo said from just beyond Wrecker, where Hunter and Tech had set up a fire, and a tent. You suspected thatâs what had kept Wreckerâs hands full.
Echo straightened up and passed you your bucket. You looked down at it, and a smile slowly spread across your face. A tiny skull and a 99 now adorned your helmet like a kiss on the cheek.
âCross, you did this for me?â You asked, turning to the sniper. It was difficult to tell in the low light, you could have sworn he was blushing.
âWe thought you might like it,â Hunter said.
âI love it.â
***
The six of you gathered around a happily crackling fire, as you finally answered all of their questions about your time away. Crosshair watched you with rapt attention, appreciating all of your little quirks, as you discussed the missions youâd participated in, including the one that had resulted in your injury.
âStill pissed you got shot. Not surprised though. That always happens with regs,â Wrecker said, tightening his hold on your waist, as he held you to his side.
âHey!â Echo said, leaning around you and gesturing to himself. âIâd never let her get shot.â
âYou know I donât mean you, Echo,â Wrecker said dismissively.
âItâs just a scratch, boys,â you laughed. âThereâs barely even a scar.â
âWe sent you to Commander Cody with no scratches, and we expected you to come back in the same condition,â Crosshair said gesturing at you with a toothpick.
âThough I would have chosen a less objectifying way to phrase it, I agree with Crosshair,â Tech said, looking up from his datapad. âI would have thought you would be in excellent hands with our Marshal Commander, and not in a position to take damage from a sniper.â
âAwwww, did Cody let your favorite toy get all scuffed? You want a new one?â You asked with a teasing lilt to your voice.
Crosshair shook his head slowly. Tech looked offended at the suggestion.
âAnd have to break in another one?â Hunter interjected. âNo way. Youâre stuck with us now.â
âOh no,â you gasped in mock anguish. âWhatever shall I do? Stuck with my favorite people in the galaxy. Torture.â
You draped yourself dramatically over Wreckerâs legs, much to his amusement. His hearty laughter rumbled out of his chest, as he pulled you close to his chest, so you were sitting in his lap.
âYour favorite people? In the whole galaxy?â He asked, his mismatched eyes full of hope as they focused on yours.
âAbsolutely. You have been for awhile,â you confessed. âI hated being away from all of you.â You looked around the fire at each of them before bringing your focus back to Wrecker. âI mean it. I donât wanna do that again for a good long while.â
Satisfied, Wrecker cupped your face and brought his lips to yours again. Your eyes fluttered closed, and you felt yourself relax against him. His lips moved over yours with a gentle confidence that made you hum low in your throat, and press closer to him.
You broke the kiss, as a yawn forced its way out of you. You were still absolutely exhausted. The thrill of their confession had given you the sweetest sugar high, and you were crashing.
âYou require rest,â Tech said, âI will take first watch.â
âIâll take it,â Crosshair said, shooting a glance at Hunter, who had covered him the night before. Heâd gotten you all to himself for several hours, and he knew the others were itching to snuggle with you. He was too relieved to be selfish. For now.
You stood up and stretched, reaching for the sky youâd grown up under before wandering over to Crosshair and kneeling down to press a soft kiss to his lips.
âCome snuggle with me soon,â you whispered.
He nodded, as he watched you rise and make your way into the tent.
âWeâll keep you company, Cross,â Wrecker said with a grin, as Tech and Echo followed you into the tent, and Hunter relaxed on his back to look up at the stars.
âOh goody,â the sniper replied with a halfhearted roll of his eyes.
Youâd worried it would be awkward, but going to sleep between Tech and Echo felt as natural as breathing. Echo spooned up behind you, your face against Techâs chest. The three of you chatted quietly for a little while, while their hands moved over your body absently.
You began to drift in and out of consciousness, despite your desire to stay awake and enjoy their presence.
âSleep, saraad,â Echo commanded gently. âWeâll all be here in the morning.â
âPromise?â You asked sleepily, as you nuzzled against Tech.
âPromise,â He said, wrapping his arm around your waist.
Warm and safe, you left yourself drift away.
description: commander wolffe likes to berate you when you go against his orders, but this time, you can't supress the visceral reaction it brings.
warnings: not necessarily enemies to lovers but... a decent amount of arguing, mentions of negative clone treatment, i think that's it? idk man I'm tired
a/n: this is for all the girlies that cry when someone raises their voice at them! (me) anyway... i get nervous when discussing the treatment of clones and other kinda touchy stuff bc i just have this nagging feeling that i'm always interpreting stuff wrong, so I hope the stuff wolffe says at the end makes sense lmao
You heard your name called after you before you managed to make your escape to your quarters, desperately trying to avoid confrontation. Ignoring the Commanderâs calls, you hurried down the hall, your strides much wider than your usual gait. You managed to get the door open, but a large hand wrapped around your wrist before you could evade the uncomfortable conversation.
âWhere do you think youâre going?â The Commander snarled, tugging you back into the corridor and slamming his fist into the control panel to shut the door.
You lifted your eyes to his for a moment, your head still angled to the floor as if it would shield you from his foul temper. You had never seen him so angry.
âI asked you a question, soldierâ He said, his voice dangerously low as his face drew near to yours, âDid you really think Iâd let you off after what you just pulled?â
âSir, I didnât mean toââ
Wolffe interrupted you with a sarcastic laugh, âDidnât mean to? Youâll have to do better than thatâ
You couldnât look at him. You knew heâd react like this when he found out, but you still hated when he was angry with you. He was more hard on you than his brothers, he always had been. So much so that you felt there was something unsaid between the two of you, that there was some itch that he wouldnât stop scratching even though he wouldnât acknowledge what it was.
âIâm sorry sirâ You peeped out. It was the only thing you could say.
You had no explanation for your actions. You had gone directly against his orders, knowingly, deliberately. You knew he would find out, you knew heâd berate you for it, and you did it anyway. Youâd do it again if you got the chance.
âSorry doesnât cut itâ He began, and you let him scold you without interruption, âI have told you, countless times, you do not get involved in the conflict. No matter what. Do you know how it makes me look?â
He paused, but you knew the question was rhetorical. In that silence it was hard not to think about the feel of his hand wrapped around your wrist, still keeping you in your place.
âI makes me look like I canât control those under my command. If a medic can go against my orders then whatâs to stop the rest of the men? Or the other nat-borns? I mean, do you even think? Clearly you donât. You donât have combat training, you couldâve been hurt, or you could have diedâ
He continued on, but you tuned him out. You had heard this barrage of demeaning comments more than once, and it was starting to feel like maybe it had become one time too many. If you had any more backbone you wouldâve told him how much you despised when he did this. Although, Wolffe â along with almost everybody aboard the ship â was above you in rank. You couldnât possibly give back to him this belittling commentary, so once again you stayed silent.
The worst part was that most of the time, Wolffe wasnât even unbearable to be around, far from it. At any other time he was kind, in his own way. It wasnât a way in which youâd seen anyone else express kindness, but youâd come to understand the way he operated a little by now. For example, something you had retroactively realised was a display of compassion, was that when you first joined the 104th, he had checked up on you everyday, albeit not in a particularly cheerful way. He had made sure you were comfortable in your new quarters, the ones you were now stood outside of being reprimanded.
There was something gnawing at the back of your mind, the feeling that you shouldnât have to put up with this. You could hear your father in the back of your head, telling you that you had to learn to stand up for yourself. You hadnât looked up at Wolffe once through his ranting, and you didnât plan on it either, especially now as you felt your eyes becoming heavy with tears.
It was a natural response. You never liked being told off, and right now you felt as if you were a child again, your parents giving you a lecture about your shortcomings. Hot tears rolled down your cheeks in a similar manner, silent and unacknowledged.
You didnât know when Wolffe had finished laying into you, but when you stopped reflecting on the past and came back to the present moment, you realised that he wasnât speaking anymore. You hazarded a look at him, once again keeping your chin pointed down. He was just staring down at you, his scowl replaced in favour of a more uneasy frown, finally removing his hand from your wrist.
âAre you okay?â He asked quietly, clearly unsure of how to even approach the situation.
âIâm fineâ You replied, and your voice was surprisingly even.
He was still just peering down at you through his creased brow, frozen in his place and out of his depth.
âWhy are you crying?â He addressed the situation head on.
âIâm not cryingâ
âYou areâ
âIâm nââ
âYou areâ
You looked to your feet, feeling absolutely infinitesimal under the full scrutiny of his commanding presence.
âAlright fine, maybe I amâ You admitted in a whisper.
âWhy?â He asked firmly.
âNo reasonâ
âNo reason?â
âYep, no reasââ
âStop itâ He interrupted again, âWhatâs wrong?â
You let out a long breath, your chest heaving before it escaped your pursed lips. You could taste the saltiness of your tears, and you lifted a hand to wipe one of your cheeks.
âI just donât like being told off okay? I canât help itâ
âI wasn't telling you off, I wasââ
When he didnât finish his sentence your eyes flicked back up to his. His frown had softened, and he was now chewing on his lip as if he was looking for something to say. You huffed quietly, your cheeks scorching with embarrassment at the whole situation.
âIf it's alright with you sir, I'd like to retire to my quarters nowâ You spoke quietly, trying to escape this situation that was nothing if not awkward.
Wolffe stepped back from you, clearing his throat, âYeah, go aheadâ
You turned back to your door and opened it up. You had only taken one step inside when Wolffe spoke up again.
âWaitâ
You turned around, your eyes finding his, flitting between the cybernetic and the natural. His usual scowl was nowhere to be seen, and he just looked at you with a plain expression, something unreadable.
âI don't want to have to tell you offâ He said, his voice uncharacteristically gentle.
You mustered up a little courage after his change in demeanour, âThen why do you?â
His throat bobbed as he gulped, âI just want you to be safeâ
The way that he was staring at you was entirely too much for you to cope with, so you lowered your gaze once again before you replied.
âThank you sir, I appreciate thatâ
Wolffe reached up slowly, gently taking your chin and guiding your eyes to his. He gazed upon you with the utmost sincerity and apology as his thumb swept across your still-wet cheek.
âI'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset youâ
âThat's okaââ
âIt's notâ He spoke resolutely, with no room for argument, then softened his voice a little, âYou understand that I don't like to be angry with you, right?â
Something about your expression must have conveyed a sense of doubt, because Wolffe frowned when you didnât reply.
âDo you really think-?â
âI don't think, remember?â You replied, in a oddly humorous way, despite the previous tone of the conversation. Wolffe gave you a disapproving look, and you backtracked, âSorry Commanderâ
Wolffe was still holding you face, and the way his eyes were searching yours was making your stomach erupt into butterflies. His gaze was captivating, cementing you in place and rendering you speechless in a completely different way to when he had been scolding you earlier. You didnât want to be the first one to break away, and thankfully Wolffe came to his senses soon enough.
âI should goâ
He dropped his hand from your chin and stepped back. You nodded subtly in reply to his words, still unable to form your own, and he turned to leave with haste.
You watched him walk away as you leaned on your doorway, stalking down the hall with a pace to rival your hurried steps from earlier. His head turned back to you briefly, and you both instantly looked away, you stepping back into your room and closing the door as you felt your cheeks burn hot from being caught watching him.
It felt like something had shifted in your relationship, like something significant had happened. Perhaps it was your inadvertent show of vulnerability, perhaps it was the way his touch set your skin alight. Whatever it was, it was something that you couldnât take back. Whatever was unsaid between you was coming to light, and you cursed your racing heart for getting ahead of itself.
You were crouched behind cover, your eyes locked on a trooper that had been knocked to the ground. He wasnât moving, but going over to see if he was still alive was too risky, even if the focus of the enemyâs fire wasnât in his direction any longer. You lingered, waiting to see even the slightest twitch of his fingers. He continued to lay motionless, his body sprawled in an uncomfortable position from the heavy blow he had received. You hoped, prayed, and they were answered in an instant, the manâs body curling in on itself as he groaned in pain.
You gulped, and slowly turned to look over your shoulder, only to see Wolffe watching you like a hawk.
âDon't you dareâ He shook his head slowly, his voice low, almost a growl.
You hung your head a little, squeezing your eyes closed for a brief moment.
âI'm sorry Commanderâ
You rushed out from behind the cover, hearing your name being screamed after you in a desperate plea for you to do anything else. You didnât pay attention, you were solely focused on making it to the trooper.
You pulled the man to his feet, throwing his arm around your shoulders and making your way back to cover, but you were not so lucky as to evade danger. Blasterfire ripped through the air surrounding you, causing you to duck out of its path, and take the injured man down with you.
âGet out of here!â The Commander shouted at you, stepping in front of you and shooting at the droids that had focused their fire in your direction.
You dragged to man the short distance back to cover, and as you were giving him a once over, assessing the issue, Wolffe ordered another medic to take over and tugged you further back from the front lines, around the corner of a crumbling building.
âWhat the kriff is the matter with you?â
He was angry. More angry than he had ever been, more angry than the previous rotation. And yet, there was a far clearer emotion swimming in his non-cybernetic eye, dripping from his pinched brows, washing over you with every heavy breath he exhaled. Worry, concern, utter distress.
âI thought I made it pretty clear that I don't want you anywhere near the actionâ He growled, evidently struggling to keep his emotions in check.
Despite his afflicted demeanour, you didnât feel like having a repeat of the previous rotation, and the adrenaline coursing through your veins only sought to heighten you irritation.
âAnd I thought I made it pretty clear that I don't appreciate being told offâ You grumbled back to him, not feeling brave enough to say it with your chest.
âThen stop doing stupid things!â He rebutted, his voice conveying every inch of exasperation he felt.
You shook your head as you dragged your gaze from him, starting to walk away. You werenât going to be talked to like this again. For the second time in the last rotation, Wolffeâs hand shot out and wrapped around your wrist, tugging you back.
âI'm talking to youâ
âWell I'm not talking to youâ You snapped, snatching back your arm and finally letting your irritation take over.
At first, Wolffe appeared to be taken aback. You had never so much as argued back at him before, but something about the fire burning in his eye told you that it was welcomed. He wanted you to fight back. He liked that you were fighting back.
âI refuse to be reprimanded for doing the right thingâ You continued, letting him hear your true feelings on the matter.
âYou refuse?â Wolffe seemed almost amused.
âYesâ You replied, but your confidence was slipping, âI refuseâ
Wolffe laughed, taking a step towards you, âAnd I suppose you think you have the authority to refuse my orders? Seeing as it's the only thing you can seem to do rightâ
You stepped away from him, but with every step you took, he followed after you. It wasnât long until he had backed you into the wall, and was towering over you with a challenging look on his face.
âI have free will, is what I haveâ You puffed out your chest in defiance, causing it to come into contact with his chestplate, âAnd I will use it to do the right thing, consequences be damnedâ
âIt must be nice to be you, huh?â
You just frowned, not entirely sure what made him say that.
Wolffeâs face became stern, âYou just get to flit about, playing the hero when you could so easily become the martyr acting the way you do, claiming it's all about âfree willâ and âdoing the right thingâ. Well guess what? I don't have those luxuries. If I disobey orders, I get court martialled. I don't have free will, and I don't get to do the right thing, I get to do as I'm toldâ
You swallowed thickly as your body recoiled from his in shame. From his perspective, your actions certainly seemed silly and plainly misguided. Perhaps they were.
âI'm sorry Commander, I didnât thinkââ
âNo, you don't think, do you?â He retorted quickly.
You frowned deeply, drawing an enervated sigh from Wolffe.
âI would love to be able to consider what is right and wrong, but I am simply not allowed. Having the ability to think, to form thoughts unique to myself, but not get to enact any sort of âfree willâ, it'sââ He breathed deeply, his forearm coming to rest on the wall beside your head, âOh, the things I would do if I had free willâ
His eyes bored into you through heavy eyelids, his self control hanging by a thread. He was so close to you, his body pressing yours into the wall, and it was taking all of your strength to not melt against him.
âWhat would you do?â You spoke softly, guiding him in the right direction.
He didnât waste any time in replying.
âI would tell you that the reason I don't want you around the action, the reason I can't stand your stupid moral compass which makes you do stupid things, is because the idea of you getting hurt is my own personal hell. I would grab you and hold you close and keep you safe, I would never let you go. I wouldââ He puffed out a quick breath, mingling it with your own as he drew impossibly closer, âI would kiss you, and do every other thing I've been dreaming of since the first moment I met you. I would throw all of this away, if I got that chanceâ
There was not a single one of his words that were processing in your brain. For a moment you just stared at him, shocked, before the surprise melted from your face and you offered every measure of tenderness within you in a single look.
âWolffeâ You whispered, reaching up and placing a hand on his cheek.
His eyes closed at your touch, and his troubled expression eased slightly. He let out a shaky breath as he took in the warmth of your skin on his, but as soon as he had revelled in it for a moment too long, he put up his walls again.
âBut it doesnât matter, because I don't have free willâ He stepped back from you but you were determined now, following after him.
âWell I doâ
You practically leapt at him, your hands finding the back of his neck and pulling him against you, bringing him into a searing kiss. His hands instantly flung around your waist, tightening around you and drawing you into his body as if he was never going to let go, just as he promised. It was as if he only needed you to be the one that initiated it, and now, he had forgotten everything that was stopping him in the first place.
You let your fingers tangle in the curls at the base of his neck, and he pushed you backwards into the wall again, a soft groan sounding in the back of his throat. One hand came up to cup your cheek, and you were surprised at how softly he held you, a direct contrast to the way that he was devouring your lips, consuming your very soul with only his mouth and tongue.
You had to pull away, gasping for breath, and he did the same. He held you close as you both caught your breath, staring into each otherâs eyes with a newfound fondness. It was intoxicating, to see him like this; his chest heaving from having kissed you with such an intensity. You felt like your psyche was being ripped from you with each heavy exhale, and you were watching from outside of your body.
âI'm never letting you go nowâ He continued to hold onto you like his life depended on it, burying his face in the exposed skin of your neck.
âI thought-â
âDonâtâ He rumbled, âI don't care what I said before, there's no going back nowâ
You sighed blissfully and mirrored him, and coiling your arms around his neck and holding him tightly. The feel of his breath against your neck was heady, deeply exhilarating, but in the quiet of the moment, you couldnât help but remember you were in the middle of a battle.
âMaybe we should-â
He lifted his head and cut you off with a deep kiss. You were powerless to stop him, but you didnât care to anyway.
âJust a little longerâ He pleaded, his eyes soft and slightly widened, âPleaseâ
You let a small smile lift the edges of your lips, enamoured by the soft side that this kind of treatment brought out of him. It was almost amusing, how different he was acting as compared to his usual authoritative demeanour. He was putty in your hands, and you didnât quite know how to handle it.
You brushed your lips lightly against his and spoke with a teasing edge, âYes sirâ
