I think it is kind of like to make their relationship official or something like that. I do not think it’s an actual marriage or else Kai wouldn’t help Jay.

Characters said the words “husband” and “wife” before, so unless this is a censorship thing because they’re teenagers or a weird Ninjago culture thing, I think this may not quite be Jay proposing to Nya. 

Instead, perhaps this is more like Jay asking Nya to “go steady” with him. Or it’s like a promise ring thing. Basically promising each other that someday they’ll be married. Not engagement, just.. “pre-engagement”. They’re engaging to become engaged. At some point in the future.

They’re teenagers so there can never really be a scene of them proposing, so this is a compromise.

Also I just realized something awkward, they’re LEGO and don’t have fingers and can’t wear rings

Like, okay, you know they - Skylor and Kai - still very much care for each other, but they’re not completely to that level yet where they’re at a relationship, but they’re still good, close, friends that feel a little more. Just look at them! They’re smiling and laughing, Kai’s doing a little boogie,,, *tears*

I mean, Ive always loved Kai and Skylor as buddies but this just makes me happy.
