whatever dude i dont even look that tormented mostly
Do you believe that the chemistry between Aziraphale and Crowley feels as organic as it does because of the close friendship between Tennant and Sheen?
I honestly feel like any two other actors couldn't have created such a realistic bond between the characters the way David and Michael did. I'd love to hear what you think.
Well, they weren't friends before Good Omens. They had sort of met but they didn't really even know each other. And the chemistry turned up about 45 minutes into the first table read.

Okay okay things I loved. because yes Iâm devastated but I loved SO MANY THINGS.
EPISODE 1, I LOVED the absolutely manic angel Crowley, brilliant and distracted. Loved the way Aziraphale introduces himself, while Crowley never does (fast forward to their meeting on the wall, âand you areâŠâ âCrowleyâ.) Loved Aziraphaleâs little eyebrow bounce on âyou are gorgeousâ and his immediate embarrassment.
Loved Crowleyâs miracle on the âinclusiveâ, pulling the miracle into the universe. That Crowley is the one to say âlet there be lightâ.
And! Of course! Crowley shielding Aziraphale!
Also also. (Iâm going to go into meta again, arenât I.)
Aziraphale tells Crowley about the humans. Crowley is all about the stars, the nebulae, the mechanics of it all, but Aziraphale already cares about the future humans while Crowley is all âthis is not just there to twinkle!â Oh, Crowley will start to care about the Earth, a LOT, later on. But thatâs how they are starting out.
And a curious note is, Aziraphale praises Crowley. Deliberately, pointedly. Well, itâs very pretty. And I think youâve done an excellent job. Is that what you yourself have been missing, Aziraphale? Or is that what angels are supposed to do?
I love how interested Aziraphale is, and how he worries about Crowley already, and how much disquiet there is in their first conversation.
And I do believe that Aziraphale will carry it through all of time: how happy Crowley looked, back then, back there, putting the universe into motion. How absolutely, spectacularly happy.

Have we appreciated yet how inevitable the breakup really was? The truth is, whether the metatrash orchestrated it or to what extent he did, Aziraphale going back to Heaven and Crowley refusing to go back to Heaven was the only way that situation could have played out. The minute the metatrash offered Aziraphale the chance to right the wrong of Crowley's Fall, it was over. Offering Aziraphale the supreme archangel gig was just insurance.
Aziraphale was always going to want to redeem Crowley because he doesn't (yet) understand the Fall, what it cost Crowley, what it's actually done for Crowley, and how Crowley was fundamentally changed by it. Aziraphale does not yet know what Crowley knows of Heaven - and Aziraphale can't have known it yet. But he will, and this breakup is how he gets the opportunity to learn what he needs to learn to finally, finally understand what it means for him and Crowley to be on their own side.
And Crowley, who would follow Aziraphale anywhere and do anything for him? He cannot follow him back to Heaven, he cannot pretend to "be an angel" again for Aziraphale, because it is literally impossible. Crowley can't undo the millennia of growth he's undergone, he can't be un-cast out of the fold, he can't be un-unwanted by God and he can't be un-unloved. That's his lived experience of being fallen and nothing could change that for him.
There's no world where Crowley accepts the offer, and there's no world where Aziraphale refuses it. Not with them as they are right now together and separately in their arcs. And maybe that's part of why it's so painful to watch and dissect, because they hurt each other so badly and they don't want to, but it's actually inescapable. They're in a trap that they can't see until it springs. Snap. The elevator closes.

As a mental health provider working with Gender Diverse teens and adults, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the Good Omens TV series. It's more meaningful than just representation, although that alone has made such a difference. The varied ways all of the characters interface with gender presentation and identity have proven to be such a useful tool to help people talk about and explore what these things mean to them, and to find their way to a more comfortable and authentic understanding of themselves.
It's effective in a way reality isn't, because it's so openly permissive of experimentation and change. So many of my clients feel enormous pressure to "get it right" the first time when trying out new gender expressions. Whether it be a name, pronouns, clothing style, haircut, etc. so many folks are too intimidated to make any moves toward their own comfort for fear they'll "get it wrong" and be seen as somehow less valid if they decide it didn't work for them as well as they initially thought. I love how all of the eldrich beings - but especially Crowley - make changes to their presentation over time or between earth and their respective head offices. And no-one bats an eye. No one even comments on it, they just automatically accept roll with it. That is so monumental and permission-granting for my clients!
So thank you, so very much!!
âŠalso⊠as a fan and a therapist I would give anything for the opportunity to do couples counseling for Aziraphale and Crowley! This isn't a request or anything, it obviously doesn't fit in-universe. I just giggle every time it crosses my mind.
Much love to you for all your work! (I also adore your novels and short stories. )
Iâm so glad. I hadnât thought of Good Omens as a therapeutic tool.
