Fantastic notes on drawing David's likeness.
Hi! I'd love to make some Crowley fanart, and I'd love it if you could give me a few pointers about how to keep the Crowley look. Cause you do it so good, maybe yo have something to keep an eye on?
Ooh what a fun question. Let me analyse David Tennant’s very interesting face. This may be a lot more detailed than what you’ve asked for...
- Overall, his face resembles an inverted trapezoid. The features have a very “sharp” feel.
- The distance from the bottom of his nose to his chin is a lot shorter than the the distance from his browbone to the bottom of his nose & the distance from the top of his forehead to his browbone. This makes his nose appear long, but it’s actually because the lip & chin area is shorter.
- The vertex of the convex of his top eyelid leans towards the temple. His brow bones are VERY straight. His cheekbones are quite high and pronounced. The tip of his nose is split and tilts downwards. His bottom lip is a lot thicker than the top lip and protrudes slightly, but his lip area as a whole is slightly sinked in.
- His face is noticeably asymmetrical. The browbone is not levelled, and the nose bridge leans to the left.
By the way, does anyone want to see my notes on painting Michael’s face? 😆

DRAMA!CROWLEY, ACTIVATE!
So we meet here again, in front of another flaming-as-anything-ginger Crowley. We can't keep doing this, you know. People will talk.
More info and hi res under the jumpppppppppppp.
I wanted to try my hand at a standalone portrait of Crowley before I jump back into what will inevitably be another Aziracrow portrait---I'm thinking 1920s theme. Flapper Crowley & Aziraphale? But that's for another time.
I wanted to try grey scale under-painting in digital art. A success, I hope? I'm pretty happy with the portrait (for now, give it a week and I'll hate everything about this painting, happens every time!)
I struggled a bit on the eyes in this piece. I normally paint straight color to canvas, so I have a method to my madness with painting eyes. Not so, here! This was new territory. I'm not 100% satisfied, but that just means I need more practice.
ALSO, GOLGOTHA HAIR WITH A BRAID WHAT WHAAAAAT
And because I learned how to paint snake scales for the last portrait, I decide to reprise that theme and torture myself again keep practicing them, this time with iridescence. I wanted to keep the scales low-key, though, almost as if they're just emerging or maybe the viewer caught a momentary glimpse of scales through the veil to an ethereal occult plane. Additionally, I wanted some good creepy claw hands with long fingernails (big fan of creepy, me) for a proper demonic manicure.
About: All digital, all Photoshop. Orig. 7200 x 5400 px. ~1 week of off-and-on painting. Title is taken from Reptile by Nine Inch Nails because I guess I'm still naming art after 30 year old albums? Is this a thing I do, now?
...and if so, can you imagine what I'll have to draw to use lyrics from Hurt in the title?
Drawn vaguely in the style of: @chernozemm, @dingledraw, @gingerhaole, @gleafer
@goosetooths, @hansoeii, @hg-aneh, @lonicera-caprifolium
@naniiebimworks, @tang5325, and @tweedfeather
Just a fun, silly, "fanart of fanart" thing I did, picking one specific character and emotion and trying to sketch it in the style of a bunch of different artists whose work I enjoy. Boy howdy, that is QUITE a mental workout to imitate eleven different artists. This is like the "eating your vegetables" of art practice except I happen to fucking love vegetables. Also, if I butchered your art style, I'm sorry, I'm an absolute madlad and must be stopped. I adore the work of each artist here and tried to do it some semblance of justice.
stunning cover art by @quona!!
Father Fell has been living a quiet life in a small parish. Despite the looming fear of war, he thought he was content with his small pleasures. Until a mysterious stranger comes to town, turning that life on its head and awakening desires the Father thought he buried long, long ago...
Chapter Sixteen, a short but sweet coda to our story that gives a small glimpse into the near future.
It was in May of that year that Germany surrendered. Less than a year after the battle called D-Day that became known as a pivotal point in the war. The day that Ezra Fell first properly introduced himself to Anthony Crowley (he did share his birth surname once, murmured against his lover’s shoulder but they agreed it was a secret between them that never need see the light of day). The day that Crowley saw in Fell something the man had never managed to find in himself and said it out loud. Strength in the softness of him, the unbroken spirit of a man whose faith extended beyond the ineffable and into the heart of every person he met.
It was a slow but verdant Spring, as though Persephone had been languidly stretching out one limb at a time. They worked the garden together, Crowley in his dark glasses and Fell in a straw hat, looking up to share coy smiles across the unfurling leaves. They washed together after, some days just as leisurely, prolonging the moments of soap--slick contact. Some days they rushed through clean up so they could tumble faster into bed.
Crowley was unspeakably, incandescently happy. It felt like there was a living sun below his sternum, radiating heat and life, powered by Ezra’s smiles and kisses, by the soft breath against Crowley’s neck as they slept, by hands that unerringly sought his at nearly every private opportunity.

Throwback Thursday to a piece I painted in 2008. I was a baby artist back then!
Artistic nudity below the jump, you have been warned.
sketch/light test & color test i'm back on my bullshit again, painting complicated lighting for Arabian Nights themed femAziracrow
work in progress
Reblogging this one because I was looking at this piece today and still am super in love with it. ❤️
Here's some process shots from this one, as a treat.
The original anatomy sketch.
Started laying down color while referencing a few portraits by John Singer Sargent. I specifically paid attention to how he painted hair (Sargent usually painted hair as one large, dark mass of color with little highlight detail) and how he painted skin (very subtle and smooth, not a huge amount of contrast).
Got the environment blocked in a little, too. I put that blue and white porcelain vase in because I can never, ever resist blue and white porcelain.
More detail in the environment and the character.
Adding a pattern to the chair upholstery.
Working on the rug, here.
This is the full rug design. I sketched the whole rug out in a separate canvas and then overlaid it into the working canvas and warped it into place to use as a reference.
Took this shot when I was halfway done with the decanter and glass.
A Place to Call Home --- --- ---
This piece was commissioned by my dear friend @tawnyontumblr for HER dear friend @saretton to accompany a WONDERFUL fic that Tawny wrote for Saretton's birthday!
The fic is A Place to Call Home (Explicit, on AO3), a Human AU set in the Late Victorian/1890s and featuring Portrait Painter!Aziraphale and Stage Actor!Crowley as his artistic muse. I am in love with this concept.
Crowley's voice was almost too soft to hear. It nearly faded amidst the sweep of Aziraphale’s brush over canvas, the carriage rattling past outside—another layer of stimuli amidst the light, and the smell of linseed oil and turpentine. The way the fabric Crowley wore hissed gently over his skin as he slowly, minutely shifted position and then moved back.
He half sat half reclined on a Louis XVI armchair that Aziraphale had picked up in an estate sale. His legs were crossed, and the emerald banyan, embroidered with gold, slid from one shoulder. Aziraphale had been staring at that curve of lightly freckled skin while he'd been mixing rose madder and Chinese white, letting the brush sweep over the damp canvas as he sought to give voice to the hunger he felt.
The idea here was for me to paint the portrait of Crowley that Aziraphale is painting in the story.
Tawny asked me to paint with John Singer Sargent vibes, who is quite possibly my favorite artist of all time, and one of, if not the greatest, portrait painters of the 19th century. It's quite a tall order to try to imitate his style, so I settled for something Sargentesque! She also specified that "I want I am both painting and fucking him vibes. Intimate. That's the word." And I hope I delivered.
@goodomensafterdark Ya'll need to go read this fic its hot af.
