Ok, so this is during Red and Black. Look how Grantaire is focused on Enjolras during his whole speech. Then Enjolras says ... do we fight for the right to the night at the opera now, and Grantaire laughs with the most affectionate look on his face. He's 100% buying everything Enjolras says. He even loves his dumb little jokes.
But then!!! Enjolras goes after him specifically with, Is it simply a game for rich young boys to play? And Grantaire isn't even angry for this. I think he's more like - of course you're right Enjolras. I'm useless. For a moment I was so lost in your words I thought I was as brave as you all, but I'm not.
And then!!!
Exactly at the moment Marius sings breathless delight, Grantaire bursts with laughter and comes over to TOUCH ENJOLRAS' NECK AND PULL HIM INTO AN EMBRACE. And I'm sure he's saying something along the lines - You see, I told you the same before. Won't you forget your stupid plans for a moment, just like Marius did?
Enjolras obviously has other ideas but he doesn't look like he's. Shocked or offended by Grantaire's excessive familiarity. He even looks at him fondly at the beginning and leans into his embrace.
And then, Drink with me. So Enjolras was sitting in the back while the other guys were singin, but when he hears Grantaire being distressed, he comes over to try and comfort him :(. He specifically gets up only to come to Grantaire.
And he whispers something to him. Probably telling him to stop drinking for now, as he takes his bottle to raise a toast with others. And Grantaire doesn't even care 🙃.
All in all, I really love how these little scenes show their relationship. They seem to be genuine friends! I specifically love how Enjolras clearly cares about Grantaire even though the two of them may argue and don't agree on many things. But he doesn't look down on Grantaire with disgust, he's more like trying to make Grantaire to get himself together.
[image id: a four-page comic. it is titled “do not stand at my grave and weep” after the poem by mary elizabeth frye. the first page shows paleontologists digging up fossils at a dig. it reads, “do not stand at my grave and weep. i am not there. i do not sleep.” page two features several prehistoric creatures living in the wild. not featured but notable, each have modern descendants: horses, cetaceans, horsetail plants, and crocodilians. it reads, “i am a thousand winds that blow. i am the diamond glints on snow. i am the sunlight on ripened grain. i am the gentle autumn rain.” the third page shows archaeopteryx in the treetops and the skies, then a modern museum-goer reading the placard on a fossil display. it reads, “when you awaken in the morning’s hush, i am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight. i am the soft stars that shine at night. do not stand at my grave and cry.” the fourth page shows a chicken in a field. it reads, “i am not there. i did not die” / end id]
