the fact that the first female human experience barbie goes through is being self conscious and experiencing sexual harassment mirrors how growing up as a girl one day you’re okay and the next all of a sudden you feel bad about your appearance and are receiving unwanted advances is something that can be so fucking important to be recognized in film
On paper, an adult cartoon created by a man where many of the female characters are voiced by men would look deeply misogynistic, and in many cases it is, but I feel like YOLO really stands out from that trend. The main characters are women and they can be loud, gross, and flawed, but in the same way that men in adult television have been allowed to be for years. Women can be funny and imperfect without being reduced to one-note sexist stereotypes and I think this show really displays that. Rachel's male VA does not attempt to put on a shrill, fake "woman's" voice but instead just captures her gruff and assertive personality. There's no joke about her or anyone else having a "man's voice," that's just Rachel and we love her the way she is. Similarly, Michael Cusack dressed in full drag in one scene and that wasn't portrayed as a joke either. Although there are still many men in the show, they are all supporting characters to the ladies' adventures, outright flipping the script on the many shows out there where women are relegated to supporting roles to the men's antics. It is honestly really refreshing.
Of course, above anything I advocate for more adult cartoons with women fully at the lead, like Tuca & Bertie. But I think Michael Cusack and YOLO set a good example of how men can create a good comedy without being allergic to showing women as full people. Sarah and Rachel are both funny and go through a lot of character growth, and Michael really seems to understand that women do not have to be written as a different species than men. It also helps that YOLO's production team is full of women, including the art director and almost all of the co-writers who work with Michael. Women are very much a key part of this show's storytelling and it shows.
Please be aware that the "opt-out" choice is just a way to try to appease people. But Tumblr has not been transparent about when has data been sold and shared with AI companies, and there are sources that confirm that data has already been shared before the toggle was even provided to users.
Also, it seems to include data they should not have been able to give under any circumstance, including that of deactivated blogs, private messages and conversations, stuff from private blogs, and so on.
Do not believe that "AI companies will honor the "opt-out request retroactively". Once they've got their hands on your data (and they have), they won't be "honoring" an opt-out option retroactively. There is no way to confirm or deny what data do they have: The fact they are completely opaque on what do they currently "own" and have, means that they can do whatever they want with it. How can you prove they have your data if they don't give everyone free access to see what they've stolen already?
So, yeah, opt out of data sharing, but be aware that this isn't stopping anyone from taking your data. They already have been taking it, before you were given that option. Go and go to Tumblr's Suppport and leave your Feedback on this (politely, but firmly- not everyone in the company is responsible for this.)
Finally: Opt out is not good under any circumstance. Deactivated people can't opt out. People who have lost their passwords can't opt out. People who can't access internet or computers can't opt out. People who had their content reposted can't opt out. Dead people can't opt out. When DeviantArt released their AI image generator, saying that it wasn't trained on people who didn't consent to it, it was proven it could easily replicate the styles of people who had passed away, as seen here. So, yeah. AI companies cannot be trusted to have any sort of respect for people's data and content, because this entire thing is just a data laundering scheme.
Please do reblog for awareness.
I think this is what I needed to make me get out of bed in the morning!
A friend once told me that when they are struggling with getting laundry done, she pretends it is her sworn duty to smuggle the young prince out of the castle to safety, disguised in a laundry hamper.
Now, when I am struggling with hygiene, I pretend I am part of a village with an annual festival, and I get one day a year to spend luxuriously at a bathhouse in preparation.
What my friend imparted on me was the skill of turning mundane tasks into fantastical adventures to make them more compelling and bearable.
So next time you need to go on a mental health walk, maybe consider doing reconnaissance for a secret underground organisation.
Next time cooking is too much of a chore, consider you ability to turn space station rations into a feast to the delight of your crewmates.
I love this
alright my best friend has thought. for his whole life. that in the lion the witch and the wardrobe. lucy was given the juice of FIREFLIES and not of A FIRE FLOWER. Help. this resulted in me singing (through actual tears)
you would not believe ur eyes
if i juiced some fireflies
and put them into an open wound
Come to me, my child named off brand pringles
If I ever create / start a band I do it with the intention of one day being able to just yell something mundane like "grain of sand" in such a compelling way it shatters someone's kneecaps.
A mutual of mine told me to post this Doctor Who analysis I wrote of season 1, episode 6: Dalek.
"You would make a good Dalek" Right now, the doctor has just fought the last time war, his species is seemingly all dead expect him. And yet, the creature- that machine that still persists - tells him that he would be one of the "good" of their species for telling it bluntly to kill itself.
As much as the doctor is all for saving lives, we see a much darker version of him, literally and figuratively, through the lens of a Dalek.
Throughout the whole episode we see the masterfully put together story of how the Dalek and the doctor are in some extraordinary way, the same. The doctor can deny it all he wants, but it is the truth in this moment. And it crushes him. Because he also must believe he should be dead as well as the Dalek. A soldier with no orders.
