Herbology Lesson One

Herbology Lesson One

Basics need-to-knows (vocabulary and conversion)

image

To an outside it might seem like a mess of random herbs, crystals, and whatever other witches brews are out there, but there is a method to our witchy madness! (well… sometimes.)

Simple Herb Conversion Chart:

Measurements

of herbs aren’t always going to be the same / may not always suit your personal needs but that’s ok because magic (and maybe a little science) Measurements of herbs can vary between Parts / Drops / or Millilitres. If your needs aren’t met from the chart below, it also provides an example on how to find the answer you’re looking for:

~ 1 mL - 20 drops  ~ 5 mL - 1 TSP or 100 drops ~ 30 mL - 1 Fluid Ounce ~ 1,000 mL - 1 Liter

Basic Plant Terminology:

Vocabulary

is an important part of witch craft too. Although, let’s be real, Hermoine could be a little

much

at times, the gal undeniably knew her stuff! These are some basic plant vocabulary words to hopefully help bring the words you’re reading from Gibberish back to English:

~ Annual - Plant with one life cycle

~ Biannual - Plant that flowers, then seeds, then dies

~ Bulb - Storage organ for underground

~ Deciduous - Tree or Shrub that loses it’s leaves annually (at the end of the season)

~ Dormant - Alive but inactive

~ Evergreen - Foliage stays on year round and sheds it’s leaves at intervals (through out the year)

~ Hardy - Tolerant year round climate in an area (IE: Hardy in Zones 1-3)

~ Perennial - Plant that has more than one life span

~ Rhizomes - Roots

~ Root - The plant stems below the ground

~ Taproot - A thick main root system

~ Umbel - Flat topped or rounded flower cluster from the flower’s central point

~ Whole Plant - The plant above the ground

~ Whorl - Three or more leaved flowers from the stem at the same level (3 encircling flowers)

And So It Goes, Every Weekend This Same Party, I Never Go Alone And I Don't Seem Broken Hearted, My Friends

And so it goes, every weekend this same party, I never go alone and I don't seem broken hearted, my friends all say they know, everything im going through, I drive down different roads but they all lead back to you.

And So It Goes, Every Weekend This Same Party, I Never Go Alone And I Don't Seem Broken Hearted, My Friends
And So It Goes, Every Weekend This Same Party, I Never Go Alone And I Don't Seem Broken Hearted, My Friends
And So It Goes, Every Weekend This Same Party, I Never Go Alone And I Don't Seem Broken Hearted, My Friends

They don't know about the night in hotel, they were riding in the car when we both fell, didn’t read the note on the polaroid picture, they don't know how much I miss you! I wish I could fly-y-y, I’d pick you up and we go back in time. I’d write this in the sky-y-y, i miss you like it was the very first night.

And So It Goes, Every Weekend This Same Party, I Never Go Alone And I Don't Seem Broken Hearted, My Friends
And So It Goes, Every Weekend This Same Party, I Never Go Alone And I Don't Seem Broken Hearted, My Friends

And so it was, we never saw it coming. not trying to fall in love but we did like children running, back then we didn’t know, we were built to fall apart, we broke the status quo then we broke each other’s hearts.

And So It Goes, Every Weekend This Same Party, I Never Go Alone And I Don't Seem Broken Hearted, My Friends
And So It Goes, Every Weekend This Same Party, I Never Go Alone And I Don't Seem Broken Hearted, My Friends

But don't forget about the night out in LA, danced in the kitchen, chased me down through the hallway, no one knows about the words that we whispered, no one knows how much I miss you.

If you don’t want to work with the Fair Folk you can use this list to help yourself understand them and take the proper measure if you ever stumble upon them. I know the list could go on forever but I’m compiling the topics I find build a good foundation of understanding. I have compiled this list to give those interested guidance and a push in the right direction, it is best you do your own research before asking other’s personal knowledge and opinions!!

Medieval/Renaissance/Ancient Correspondences for Days of the Week

I do research so you don’t have to! This long list is a compilation of the information from some prominent older Grimoires and esoteric texts pertaining to the correspondences for each day of the week. I recently compiled a list of modern correspondences, so this is a list based on more traditional sources.

Guide to the Sources

The Key of Solomon - a pseudepigraphical grimoire (also known as a book of spells) attributed to King Solomon. It probably dates back to the 14th or 15th century Italian Renaissance. It presents a typical example of Renaissance magic.

Sworn Book of Honorious - a medieval grimoire purportedly written by Honorius of Thebes. The Latin word “juratus”, which is typically translated to “sworn”, is intended to mean “oathbound”. The book is one of the oldest existing medieval grimoires, as well as one of the most influential.

Heptameron, or Magical Elements - A concise book of ritual magical rites concerned with conjuring specific angels for the seven days of the week, by Pietro d'Abano and based on the Book of Raziel.

Agrippa - specifically, Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy. This is actually a collection of six works, first published in Latin in Germany in the middle of the 16th Century, about 20 years after Agrippa’s death. This translation of the six short books dates to 1655.

Raziel - Sefer Raziel HaMalakh is a grimoire of Practical Kabbalah from the Middle Ages written primarily in Hebrew and Aramaic. The Liber Razielis Archangeli, its 13th-century Latin translation produced under Alfonso X, survives.

A New and Complete Illustration of the Occult Sciences, Book 4. - By Ebenezer Sibly (1751-1800), famous 18th century British astrologer. Probably best known for his famous horoscope for the birth of the USA, published in 1787. The first three books of his New and Complete Illustration of the Occult Sciences are devoted to astrology, including many horoscopes for famous persons.

Arbatel of Magic - a Latin grimoire of Renaissance ceremonial magic published in 1575 in Switzerland.

Unique Grimoire Topics

While planning for this I looked through possibly every single post listing prompts for your grimoire on this site, and listen 98% of those lists are exactly the same. No shade on the ppl who make these lists, since I found that stuff really useful for brainstorming my own ideas, but here’s a list of ideas that I haven’t anywhere on tumblr. They’re unique, specific, and in no particular order, but they might help other witches. So:

Gardening Calendar - when to sow and when to reap, winter plants vs summer plants, etc.

Nice sounding words and names for when I want spells to sound good.

Cryptids/Myths - (fear gortach, baba yaga, the jersey devil, and kelpies are some of my faves)

Skill Building techniques - recipes for candle/incense making, book binding, sewing/patterns, tea making, etc. I tend to approach things as a jack of all trades/master of none, and it’d be nice to have one place with a lot of tips for things I’ve learned and can apply to my craft.

basics of chemistry and practical uses (i.e. removing rust, different colors of fire and how to use them in spells, etc)

Art pages for drawing new witchy tattoo ideas

A chart of which plants mix badly with medications I take (!!!!!)

an entire info page on practicing safely honestly

Witchcraft is about using all your senses to affect change in the world. A research page on senses other than the 5 that everyone knows?

Current politics. Yeah, really. There’s this curse Trump movement going on, or it was going on a while ago. You don’t have to use curses I feel to affect some change, at least in your local government. Of course, witchcraft should only be a supplement to actually voting/calling senators.

How to attract pollinators - butterflies, bumble bees, etc.

also how to get rid of invasive species

History of the Satanic Panic and how that affected witchcraft
