THIS LINE HAS BEEN HAUNTING ME. āCome with me.ā āObi-Wan once thought as you do.ā OKAY, BUCKLE UP, BECAUSE THIS IS GOING TO GET INTO SOME FUCKING NERDY SHIT.Ā Also readingĀ homework.Ā My favorite things!Ā \o/Ā Things that are contributing to the context around this discussion: ⨠āMy take on the whole duel was that Obi-Wan is the central character in that duel. He wouldnāt try and kill Anakin. The way I saw that fight was like having a fight with your girlfriend. That sheās just lost it and that sheās coming at you with everything sheās got. [ā¦] So you try to defend her as long as you can until she breaks down. Ā The issue is, if he confronts his father again, he may, in defending himself, have to kill him, because his father will try to kill him. Ā This is the state of affairs that Yoda should refer to. Ā And then Luke says, āI donāt think heāll kill me because he could have killed me last time and he didnāt; I think there is good in him and I canāt kill him.āā Ā Ā ā George Lucas while plotting outĀ Return of the JediĀ (x) ⨠āVader mentions Obi-Wan as a focal point in EVERY SINGLE CONVERSATION he has with Luke in the films.ā Ā Ā ā meta post about the OT (x) Thatās a lot of reading and from a lot of different authors with a lot of different takes on things, but I mention all of them because they each give context to the question of:Ā Ā āJust how much does Anakin understand of Obi-Wanās love for him?ā andĀ āHow much did Obi-Wan believe in the possibility that Anakin couldĀ turn back?āĀ Thereās more that Iām sure Iām missing (I havenāt read all of the ROTS behind the scenes stuff yet, as well as thereās probably quotes I could use from Dark DiscipleĀ or the Mace Windu: Jedi of the RepublicĀ comic that illustrate the Jedi absolutely believed that people could come back from the dark side, and I havenāt fully reread Time of DeathĀ in awhile) but this is what we have to work with for context to the burning question thatĀ āObi-Wan once thought as you do.ā Itās also important to keep in mind (aside from that different authors are going to write different things) that people think in cycles and Anakin especially is not a reliable narrator, so when he says something like,Ā āIf you loved me, Obi-Wan, you would have killed me.ā this mayĀ be an indication that Anakin didnāt think Obi-Wan reallyĀ loved him, butās also just as likely that itās a Tuesday and heās in a bitchy mood and five minutes later heāll say something like,Ā āObi-Wan tried to get me to leave with him.ā I think itās safe to assume that, even if he maybe doesnāt recognize it at the time, all the meditation time in the bacta tank on Mustafar looking out over their breakup spot/where he thinks Padme died, Vader at least recognizes that Obi-Wan was trying to give him every chance to come back to the light.Ā He may even have recognized that Obi-Wan sure waited a hell of a long time before interrupting his conversation with Padme, that only once it turned bad did Obi-Wan reveal himself, because Obi-Wan was clearly hoping Padme could convince Anakin to come away with her.Ā It may not be a coincidence that she uses similar words to what Luke says, given that conversation alsoĀ is where Luke says,Ā āI know there is good in you.ā which runs parallel to Padmeās,Ā āThereās good in him. I know. I know thereās⦠stillā¦.ā Itās unlikely that thatās the sum total of it, though because of Vaderās vision in Dark Lord of the Sith, when heās trying to bleed the kyber crystal.Ā He has a vision where it shows him that, yes, he couldĀ still go find Obi-Wan and ask for forgiveness, that Obi-Wan would shut off his lightsaber even when he could have killed Vader, still calls him byĀ āAnakinā.Ā Itās possibleāgiven that Vader rejects this vision, saying,Ā āNo.Ā This is all there is.ā before he keeps on the same destructive path heās been onāthat he doesnāt believe itās possible, but heās blue-eyed in those panels, the whole point is that his thinking isnāt clouded by the Sith poison in his heart and eyes.Ā At least some part of him has to know that Obi-Wan still loved him and still thought as Luke thinks. The more complicated question is:Ā Does Obi-Wan believe that Vader could come back?Ā In all of the above material, nothing that I can remember outright says that Obi-Wan believes Anakin canātĀ come back, but instead that he wonāt. The conversation with Luke is: āThere is still good in him.ā āHeās more machine now than man.Ā Twisted and evil.ā āI canāt do it, Ben.ā āYou cannot escape your destiny. You must face Darth Vader again.ā āI canāt kill my own father.ā āThen the Emperor has already won.ā Itās easy to assume that Obi-Wan is trying to say that Luke has to kill Vader, but heās actually notāheās saying Luke has to be ready for the possibility.Ā That denying it might happen, that it might come to that, means the Emperor will have already won.Ā George Lucas explicitly says it:Ā Ā āThe mission isnāt for Luke to go out and kill his father and get rid of him. Ā The issue is, if he confronts his father again, he may, in defending himself, have to kill him, because his father will try to kill him.ā Obi-Wan, when heās facing Vader on the Death Star, isnāt in denial about how this is Anakin Skywalker before him, he has tons of memories of Anakin while looking at him, he directly says that he canāt say his real nameĀ because it would undo him.Ā He knows that Anakin is Vader and Vader is Anakin.Ā He just canāt look directly at it, because itās like looking directly into the sunāit would burn everything out of him.Ā Again, this doesnāt contradict the idea that Obi-Wan believes he couldĀ come back to the light, just that he wonāt. Which makes sense.Ā Heās seen Anakin Force-choke Padme for refusing to go along with his plans.Ā Heās seen Anakin cut off Lukeās hand and try to drag him into the Sith.Ā He has no reasonĀ to think that Anakin would ever choose to turn back, if he couldnāt do it, if Padme couldnāt do it, then he would have every reasonĀ to believe that itās possible, it just wonātĀ happen.Ā (The key difference being that Anakin is finally ready to let go of everything, but alsoāas Dave Filoni explainedāitās because Luke didnāt know him as Anakin that he could reach him.Ā This is why Ahsoka couldnātĀ reach him, for example, because she knew him as Anakin, he couldnāt tolerate that.Ā But Luke doesnāt know who he used to be, he only knows Vader.Ā Vader can tolerate this.Ā I donāt think this is something Obi-Wan could have predicted.) Ultimately, the point Iām building my case up for is:Ā Vader recognizes that, at some point, Obi-Wan believed he could still turn back.Ā Whether he thought Obi-Wan believed it up until his dying day (and now no longer canĀ believe it, because heās dead, since Vader probably doesnāt know about Obi-Wanās spirit) or stopped believing it at some point, thatās a fascinating tangle of possibilities!Ā But we have a lot of evidence that the dynamic between them was complicated, but so much of what makes it painful is that they really did love each other and, even once everything has thoroughly gone to shit, Anakin recognizes that Obi-Wan still believed in him, still thought as Luke does now.Ā Recognized that Obi-Wan would have put down his saber if Anakin came to him as Anakin, rather than Vader.Ā Recognized that Obi-Wan wanted to help gifted children. Recognized that Obi-Wan loved him and wanted him to come back.
