Valentines Prologue << Part One << Part Two << Part Three << Part Four
As much as I like to complain about my weaknesses when it comes to writing, Iâm happy to say that creating characters isnât one of them. So for anyone who wants it- my quick guide on creating characters.
This list is for anyone who has a vague idea for a character but doesnât have a plot or a role in the story for them to fill. Itâs for people who have a plot in mind, but lack characters to place in it. Itâs for people who love those long, detailed character spreadsheets, but donât have the patience (or know all the answers) to fill them out. The points Iâve listed below will probably overlap heavily and influence one another- for instance, âsocietal/cultural influencesâ may inform both âphilosophyâ and âdefining relationshipsâ. It pulls the character together.
Keep in mind that this is not everything you want to know about your character- you should continue to flesh them out as you write them. This is just a baseline, a starting point, an I-just-want-to-write-something-with-this-character-but-I-know-absolutely-nothing-about-them list so you can jump into writing with or without a plot in mind. It describes them as they are on a typical, ordinary day. As you continue to write and develop them, they will become more nuanced and take on a life of their own.
 Base Personality
Jot down some base personality traits. Donât worry about getting an equal number of positive and negative traits down- or even which is which. Just feel out the characterâs base personality.
Significant Historical Events
What events have had the greatest impact on your character (that you know of so far)? Again, donât worry about getting everything- you can always add more here as they come to you later. Hit the major turning points in your characterâs life.
Societal/Cultural Influences
What societal and cultural backgrounds do your characters have? Are they living/working/existing in an area where these influences are the majority or the minority?
Philosophy
What is your characterâs default philosophy when it comes to right and wrong, or difficult moral choices? (I usually use the D&D alignment system for its simplicity- feel free to be as detailed or not as you wish).
Defining Relationships
What are this characterâs defining relationships? Enemies, friends, and family are good places to highlight. Major conflicts and points of contention are great starting points for plots.
Goals
What does your character want more than anything? What are you preventing them from getting over the course of the story? If any minor goals pop up while youâre writing, jot those down too.

Part 1 | Part 2
Where was Chief? Why hadnât he found her yet?
Clara tugged at the tape that held her wrists. Nothing happened. Her wrists stayed pinned to the chair.
What was going to happen next?
When was Tom going to come back?
Did he leave her?
Was she going to die trapped in this room?
Her heart thudded in her chest. She could hear the blood rushing through her head.
What was happening?
She pulled at her wrists harder, but the tape held. Her breathing quickened, as tears started to stream down her face.
What was happening?
âLet me go.â She yelled as loud as she could, but her voice only came out as a small whimper.
She could hear Tomâs footsteps get closer.
He opened the door and stepped into the room. âStop struggling.â His voice trailed off.
Clara could feel his eyes on her. She wanted to ask him to help, or to look at him so he could see that she was hurting, but she couldnât take her eyes off the floor.
âHey.â He stepped forward and grabbed Claraâs chin. âHey, itâs going to be ok.â
She took her eyes off the floor and made eye contact with Tom, the tears still streaming down her face.
He reached behind her and undid the tape that held her wrists.
Not knowing what to do she threw her arms around Tom and started crying harder.
âItâs going to be ok,â Tom said hugging her back. âTry focusing on your breathing.â
Clara closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
âGood. Now keep doing that.â Tom bent down and cradled her in his arms.
She could feel them walking through the house until he set her down on something soft.
Opening her eyes, she saw Tom pull a large blanket over her.
âHow are you feeling?â he asked tucking the blanket under her chin.
Tears still streaming down her face Clara croaked âI-I donât know.â
âIt will be ok. I have had attacks like this before. Just try to sleep, and I will start making some food.â
Clara nodded and rolled onto her side. âWhy are you helping me?â She muttered quietly.
Tom froze in the doorway.
âI donât want to hurt you. I donât care if you believe me or not, but I donât.â
âWhy did you kidnap me then?â she asked, rolling to face him.
He sighed leaning against the door frame.
âI thought it was the right thing to do.â
âI donât believe that.â
âYou donât have to.â He said gritting his teeth.
âYou said you wanted to make Chief pay.â
âLike I said before, he left me behind. I want to teach him a lesson so heâll never do that again.â
Her heart started to beat faster, and Clara sat up, staring at Tom. âAgain, I donât believe you. Chief would never leave someone behind.â
Tom pushed away from the wall. âYou donât know him like I did, and like Iâve said a hundred times, I donât care if you believe me. Now lay down, and I will make some food.â
She stared at him as her heartbeat drummed in her ears. Tears sprung up behind her eyes.
Tom stepped forward pushing her down onto the bed again. âKeep breathing. Iâm sorry that I got mad. Try and sleep and we can talk about it later.â
Clara glared but closed her eyes.
Thoughts swam around her brain.Â
Why did Tom hate Chief?
What had Chief done to him?
Where was Chief?
Was he going to save her?
Through her thoughts she could hear Tom leave the room, closing the door behind him.
Clara decided to sleep first and worry about questions later. She rolled back on her side and drifted off to sleep.
SUPERKIDDOS, Part 3! For those wondering, the entire comic should be 5 parts long (total of 25 pagesâ I ended up adding 2 more pages to the last part of the comic for pacing purposes). All three of our boys show up in this part, as well as the main baddy⌠Toyman???

âEyewitnesses claim that they saw the small girl in a red sweatshirt and black mask fight the goons and then run up the wall and disappear.â
Ruby smiled as she pulled out her earphones. She was perched on top of a building watching the police arrest the goons she had just beaten up. She had run up the side of the building like the news said and decided to perch to make sure that everything was handled.
The police finished cleaning up and started to leave. Ruby got to her feet and ran across the roof of the building. Once she got to the edge, she jumped, landing on the side of the next building. She ran up to the roof and continued jumping from building to building before stopping on the tallest one.
She sat down on the edge of the building and grabbed her backpack she had hidden there earlier that day. Ruby was a normal kid or almost a normal kid. She had to go to high school and do homework just like every other kid in the city. The only thing different about her was her powers.
She didnât really know how she had gotten the powers. She just remembered walking to school one day, then waking up a week later with scars she didnât have before, and abilities she had to figure out.
Her cellphone rang out from the backpack. She fished it out quickly and answered it with a perky hello.
âRuby, did you forget about the show?â The voice on the other side seemed upset.
âOh my goodness, I did. I can meet you at your apartment in ten minutes.â Ruby quickly pulled her mask from her eyes, stuffing it into the backpack.
The voice on the other end of the phone sighed. âDonât bother. Iâll just go by myself.â
âWait, Mel, Iâm sorry Iâve been so busy, but I can make it tonight.â Ruby ran across the roof and ran down the building until she jumped to the road.
âNo, youâve flaked on me too many times. I donât know what is happening to you, but I canât handle it anymore. Iâll talk to you more at school.â There was a click, and the phone fell silent.
Ruby kept running. She stuffed the phone back in her backpack.
Mel was her best friend, and now she probably hated her. She wiped a tear from her eye. Â
She turned down an alley that was a block from Melâs apartment. She was about to run up the wall, but she noticed a person standing in front of her. She slowed to a walk and started to turn around.
âPretty impressive what you did tonight.â The voice behind her was gruff.
Ruby froze. âI mean, those guys were big, and there were five of them. So pretty impressive.â The voice continued.
She started to take a few steps from the guy. How did he know it was her? Then she realized that she didnât change her clothes. The only thing she had done was take off her mask. It was a rookie mistake, and she couldnât believe it had happened.
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â She whispered.
A laugh echoed down the alley, sending chills down her spine. That laugh sounded familiar. Why did she recognize it?
She was too busy trying to figure out where she knew the voice that she didnât hear him getting closer to her until he was right behind her. He reached out and grabbed her arm.
Startled, Ruby pulled at his hand. Usually, that would have worked, but it didnât seem to phase him. She decided to change tactics, she closed her hand into a fist, and punched the man in the face. Or she tried to.
The man caught her fist inches from his own face. She tried to pull her hand back, but the manâs grip was like iron. She was so confused. On top of running up the side of buildings, she had super strength. Thatâs why she could fight five guys, who were bigger than her, at the same time. Why couldnât she do that to this guy?
âStop struggling, your powers wonât work on me.â His lips parted into a creepy smile.
âWho are you?â Ruby kept struggling. Trying to loosen his grip on her hand.
His grasp tightened, and she yelped in pain. âI. Said. Stop. Struggling.â
Ruby stopped. âThank you.â He let go of her hand and reached for his belt. She took that as her opportunity and punched him in the gut. He let out an oof, and his grip on her arm loosened. She pulled her arm free and took off towards the building.
She jumped, but he had the same idea. He caught her mid-air, and they both collapsed to the ground. She tried to crawl away, but he jumped up stepped on her arm.
She let out another cry of pain. The guy growled, murmuring under his breath. âThis would have been much easier if you didnât struggle so much.â Thatâs when she felt the needle.
She turned her head and saw a large syringe poking out of her arm. The man was pushing the plunger until the syringe was empty. He let out a sigh of relief and let go of her arm.
Ruby struggled to her feet, but her head was swirling. The floor and walls switched places multiple times. She ended up on the ground again. âW-what did you d-do to me?â
The guy stood over her with his creepy smile, and then her vision went black.
