⋆。°✩ Jake, You, And An Apology Too

Bad. This is bad.

Why do you suddenly feel guilty? Of all the people you could feel guilty for, it’s that airhead jock who has been pestering your head ever since that day at the school fair.

“It’s literally been a week.” Your best friend, Sunoo, perched his head on his knuckles and took a good look at your currently miserable disposition. “I can feel the negative vibes just emanating from deep within that soul of yours.”

You shot a weird look at Sunoo, who smiled slyly back at you. “Sunoo, you’re not a witch.”

“Might as well be!” He rolled his eyes, flapping his hands dramatically in the air. “I want to know why my best friend is all bothered by... someone like Jake!”

You shoved your hands over Sunoo's mouth to quiet him. “Shh!” You raised your finger quickly.

“MGLPHHRPMHRLPMHR!!!” Sunoo muffled through your fingers, but within seconds, he inhaled deeply and threw your hands off his mouth. “UGH! Your hands are NOT good teethers, okay?”

You tilted your head at his remark. “Teethers? Are you a child?” You giggled.

“MY POINT ?!?” Sunoo raised his brows. “Is that you can take your hands back away from my face! I don’t care if we’re besties—THAT stays OFF my face.”

You couldn’t help but laugh at Sunoo's outburst, though he couldn’t ignore it either.

“See, there’s that smile!” Sunoo cheered for a moment. “All it takes is for you to smear my chapstick, eugh.”

You took a gentle pause before bearing that unfathomable gaze yet again.

“It’s just... I told him he was a—”

“A weirdo. Right?”

“Y-yeah.”

Sunoo looked at you, searching for the perfect sentence to speak at that moment. “It happens. Sometimes we blurt out things. And I know you; you’re very blunt about stuff. Can’t help yourself even if you tried.”

“Like you?”

“Like yo—EUGH!” Sunoo playfully shoved you. “Listen to me!”

Propping up your posture, this time, you looked at Sunoo with a serious gaze.

“He probably felt... nothing about it.” Sunoo advised gently. “Really.”

You sighed, feeling neither comforted nor pacified.

“I know Jake.” Sunoo smiled. “He’s a bit of a loser, but he never fails to give up the fight. He’s a captain for a reason.”

You heard your best friend's advice yet could only dwell on the scenarios playing in your head. Sunoo sighed heavily, knowing you were still overthinking.

“Look, if you’re REALLY bothered by it...” Sunoo thought aloud. “Go talk to him, no?”

You looked at Sunoo, incredulous.

“Me? Going to—”

“DO NOT give me that crap. You heard me.” He rolled his eyes.

You scratched your head as you pondered. Can you really toughen up and apologize for words you had thrown away? Or would you live with the thought that hypothetically, Jake might be resenting you because of what you said?

All these thoughts flooded your mind, troubling you as you navigated the best way to prove you were truly sorry.

“Is this really the only way?” You spoke to yourself as you entered the sports wing.

You were in your campus's sports wing, beating yourself up with words and lines to say to that airhead—towards Jake. You felt sorry, and if you were in his shoes, you would’ve dug a grave for whoever told you something so heinous. At least, that’s where your imagination led you.

“He’s not gonna throw me out, is he...” You asked yourself, still pacing around the building.

Silence surrounded you at that moment. It was already nighttime, and the students occupying the space had likely gone home.

“They did say he stays late... but am I too late?” You continued talking as if you had someone with you. This was definitely just a way to cope with the loneliness of being in a big building at night.

As you looked around, an ominous feeling crept at the back of your mind. Of course, this place gave you goosebumps. It was cliché, but who says a quiet building at night can't be creepy?

Walking around, you finally reached that one room you were hoping to see. Or not. It depended on whether you were actually looking forward to seeing Jake inside—

“... is Locker Room D.” You heard a booming voice coated with a thick layer of echoing bass down the hall.

Feeling your legs stiffen gradually, you tried hard to hide behind the large door, waiting to see if anyone was there with you. If it was Jake, you would’ve stayed put until you were set to speak to him. If it was anyone else, though... you had to run.

Why? Because it might just be a completely different situation. Thieves, perpetrators ... it could be anyone.

“D? No wonder they get quick baths. They have the power showers over here.” Another heckling voice echoed through the hall. It was clear that it wasn’t just Jake or anyone you knew.

“Not the point, Trell. We have to get that losers' lucky charm.” The loud booming voice you heard earlier stepped closer.

“You still believe in lucky charms?”

“Jake hasn’t lost any match since he got here.”

They... don't sound nice, do they?

“We just gotta see what makes him tick.” The loud voice expressed his thoughts. “I can’t keep losing to an amateur.”

"He's been captain for two years."

"I've been kicking goals for my whole life, dimwit." The louder voice sounded really agitated. Particularly with Jake's skills.

Clearly, this wasn’t on your agenda today. An attempted break-in for... a lucky charm? It wasn’t even that funny, but you couldn’t help but laugh. Why would these soccer players rely on something so trivial? And why did it matter if it made someone good or not? You just couldn’t wrap your head around that thought.

“Pfft...”

Shoot.

“Huh?” The larger voice turned his head toward the door.

“You!” The other voice shouted as he saw your figure.

With your nerves racking, you flicked on your flashlight and pointed it toward the two guys in front of you.

“AAACK!” The bigger guy flinched as you aimed the light directly at his eyes.

“Hey!” The smaller guy grabbed your arm. In your surprise, you could’ve sworn you screamed loud enough for every student in the building to hear. With a blunt hit of the flashlight’s end, you struck the smaller guy, and he winced at your action.

“Dammit, blinding me and shit!” The bigger guy stumbled backward.

“Dash for it, Bush! Now!” The smaller one pulled the big guy out of your sight as they ran away. You could only watch their shadows fade into the darkness. A loud sigh escaped your lips as you slumped onto the ground.

“AW!” You yelped as you slumped awkwardly. You scraped your back against the hard edge of the locker bench and hit your head on a nearby locker.

Itching in pain, you rubbed your back gently. You gritted your teeth before remembering what you had come for.

“KAMCHAGIYA!” You heard a loud voice behind you, only to find the most unexpected sight of your life.

It was Jake, rubbing a fresh towel on his wet hair—complemented by a half-naked towel tuck, showcasing the proud figure he worked so hard for.

“W-wha—” You felt an embarrassing warmth wash over you. You quickly covered your cheeks with both hands.

“You?!” Jake stood frozen, realizing who you were in an instant.

The silence between the two of you was palpable. No words were exchanged at that moment. Nothing but the soft hum of the air conditioning and the thoughts lingering in both your heads.

For some time now, Jake had often been lost in his thoughts, pondering that particular day at the kissing booth. He’d felt something shift in him since that kiss. It was confusing, exhilarating, and terrifying all at once. He hadn’t expected to feel so drawn to you, and now, standing in front of you, he couldn’t shake the feeling of vulnerability.

He always admired you from afar, being the acting president and caring for everyone who needed help inside the school - he just wasn't expecting to fall this hard for you. So hard he could practically die from embarrassment just having every type of thought about you.

“I—” You tried to stand up immediately, still rubbing your back from earlier. “I came here and saw people!”

Catching his attention, Jake walked closer to you ever so slowly, his heart racing.

“People?” Jake continued to rub the towel on his head. “Those weren’t just my imagination earlier?”

“The what?”

“The screams? Little ‘Ahs’ and some big shrieks sprinkled in between.”

“Oh...” You followed his train of thought. “Yeah.”

Jake then walked past you and headed to the other side of the aisle, opening his locker. “What was it about? I wasn’t aware there would be people here. I always close down the gym during this time.”

As he changed, Jake couldn’t help but admire how the moonlight wrapped around your face, casting a soft glow that highlighted your features. He’d never seen you like this—vulnerable and anxious, yet determined.

You were captivating. He was smitten.

Then, memories of that kiss filled his head, making him flinch internally. He hoped you didn’t regret it. It was a moment he cherished, and he wanted to explore what it meant for both of you.

“ACHK!” Thinking about the same incident, you couldn't help but flinch at the thought.

Jake looked back at you, his heart racing as he applied some cream to his face. “Huh?”

“I— I mean!” You coughed. “They were sneaking in here, and all I heard was them talking about... taking some lucky charm from you... I think?”

Jake took his time changing into his clean clothes, then looked slowly toward you, curious about your reaction. “Lucky charm?”

You paused, then tried to giggle. “Y-yeah. I mean... who still has lucky charms, right? Rabbit's foot, four-leaf clovers—”

“It's probably my sneakers.” Jake spoke plainly, the sincerity in his voice surprising even himself. He noticed how your eyes lit up with intrigue, and it gave him a rush of confidence.

“Your... sneakers?” You walked closer to him, and he could see the curiosity in your eyes.

“Yeah. My lucky sneaks.” Jake smiled. “That's what I call them. Had them since I got here.”

“O-oh...” You nodded, and Jake felt a swell of affection for you. This made him all the more guilty about what he had done.

“Here they are.” He bent down to bring out what he was talking about—his lucky sneakers. It was a rugged pair that had already suffered some wear, yet somehow felt cared for, with Jake even patting the shoes affectionately.

Looking at them, you seemed to ponder deeply, and he couldn’t help but wonder what you were thinking.

“It’s just a rugged pair, you must be thinking.” Jake smiled. “Yeah?”

“Hm.” You considered it. “But there has to be more to it. Someone gave it to you?”

“Right!” Jake beamed at your answer. “My mom got me these. She said she wanted me to wear them when I got onto the soccer team.”

The warmth in your expression made Jake’s heart flutter. It felt good to share this piece of himself with you, and he could see the softening of your demeanor as well.

“She’s a riot, right? Clearly, these aren’t for playing out in the field.” He chuckled. “But they feel hella more comfortable than my other shoes, so I wear them like that instead.”

The silence enveloped you once more. Fidgeting with the flashlight in your hand, you couldn’t take it anymore and spoke your mind.

“I’m sorry.” You both spoke simultaneously.

“Huh?” “What?”

“I was just gonna—” “Why were you—”

“Okay, enough.” You raised your hand. “Why would you say that?” You looked at Jake, and he felt a rush of vulnerability wash over him.

Jake ran his hand through his hair again, trying to steady himself. “I made you feel uncomfortable, right?” Jake glanced away, his expression growing serious. “The kiss... I was a bit too pushy for that.”

You looked bewildered, and he felt a pang of guilt.

An apology. He was apologizing. Of all the people who could’ve given it, it was him. And for a stupid reason too. For a kiss.

For a kiss that had meant so much to him.

“It... wasn’t that bad.” You stumbled over your words, almost shyly.

Jake's eyes shot up in your direction, surprise laid on his features. “You’re saying—”

“I mean!” You tried to defend yourself. “It could’ve been better, sure, but—”

Jake’s eyes widened, and a smirk crept onto his sly face. He couldn’t help but feel a rush of hope at your words.

“Look, I was going to apologize for saying you’re a weirdo, okay?” You sighed quickly and fixed your falling hair. “Because I didn’t think too much of it and I realized I wasn't in a position to say that about someone. That, and I didn’t want to hurt your feelings.”

“Why?” Jake asked, genuinely curious.

Right. Why were you concerned about his feelings?

“W-why?” You stammered.

“Yeah.” Jake smiled again, his heart racing. “Why would you care if I what, resented you over a throwaway line?”

“B-because...” You struggled to articulate your thoughts, and he could see the conflict in your eyes.

Jake just looked at you, eyes pleading for an honest answer.

“Because I didn’t want you to get the impression that I hate you.” You spoke with conviction, precise and to the point.

Jake smiled back, genuinely happy. “I wasn’t going to,” he exclaimed with enthusiasm. “In fact, I was still going to pursue you—no matter what.”

“But… I’m a guy,” you said, trying to relay your concern.

Jake tilted his head to the side, his smile widening. “And? Do I give off that impression? I’m not ignorant, am I?”

You looked away from him, overwhelmed. It felt surreal.

“Come to our game tomorrow.” His unique voice rang through your ears.

You turned your head toward him, shooting a confused look. “Huh? You mean the big qualifying match tomorrow?”

“Yeah.” Jake nodded, feeling a mix of fear and excitement. “Please?”

You looked away for a bit, while Jake bore a look of both fear and hope.

“If you don’t come, no big deal.” Jake mumbled. “I can stop doing this, and you can go back to being a good president.”

You fiddled with your fingers, your hesitation palpable.

“And if you do, well...” Jake smiled, his heart racing as he leaned in slightly. “I’m assuming you’re interested.”

You couldn’t help but blush at that, warmth overtaking your cheeks. If you were in a different setting—like a sunny park, perhaps—you would’ve definitely been beet red in front of him.

“So ... you don’t hate me.” You tried to maintain your composure.

“No.” Jake put his hands in his pockets, closing the distance between you. “You could say I’m liking you even more now.”

Bad. This is bad.

You’re actually falling in love.

you start the morning with a mission: give your boyfriend, jake, the silent treatment for as long as possible.

it's april fools’ day, and you figured it’d be funny to see how he reacts. maybe he’ll get annoyed. maybe he’ll get frustrated. maybe he’ll start pleading with you dramatically. either way, you’re determined to hold out for as long as possible.

except… you forget one crucial detail.

jake sim is unbelievably clingy.

it starts the second you wake up. normally, you’d greet him with a sleepy mumble and a nuzzle into his chest, but today, you roll over and say nothing.

jake blinks at you, confused but still smiling as he shifts closer, wrapping an arm around your waist.

“morning, baby,” he murmurs, voice thick with sleep. he presses a lazy kiss to your cheek, waiting for your usual response. when it doesn’t come, he leans back slightly to look at you.

“babe?” he says again, poking your side gently.

you blink at him but remain silent, pressing your lips together to keep from laughing.

jake tilts his head. “did you not sleep well?”

you shake your head.

he frowns. “you had a nightmare?”

you shake your head again.

his brows furrow, concern flashing across his face. “are you mad at me?”

you don’t respond.

now jake is wide awake. he sits up, pulling you with him, cradling your face between his hands. “baby, what’s wrong?”

you give him the most deadpan stare you can manage.

his lips part slightly, and his eyes soften. “did i do something?”

you fight the urge to coo at how cute he looks, his messy bedhead, his pouty lips, the way his thumb strokes your cheek so gently.

instead, you just blink at him and stand up, heading to the bathroom.

jake follows. of course he does.

“wait, babe—" he tries, but you close the door before he can step inside.

you take a deep breath, covering your mouth to suppress your laughter. if he’s already acting this desperate, this prank might not last very long

jake spends the entire time you’re in the bathroom standing outside the door, knocking every few seconds.

“baby, are you okay?” knock.

“do you want me to make breakfast?” knock, knock.

“are you mad at me?” knock, knock, knock.

you don’t answer.

when you finally open the door, he’s standing there, arms crossed, lips jutted out in a deep pout. his hair is still a mess from sleep, and he looks like a kicked puppy, eyes big and round.

“why aren’t you talking to me?” he asks, voice slightly whiny.

you just step around him and head for the kitchen.

jake gasps. “wait, wait—” he rushes after you, grabbing onto the hem of your hoodie like a lost child. “baby, talk to me.”

you shake him off and continue on, though your resolve is already crumbling.

he makes a distressed sound, like you’ve just personally ripped out his heart. “oh my god,” he breathes, stumbling after you.

as you start making toast, he stands right behind you, practically pressing himself against your back. his arms snake around your waist, and he rests his chin on your shoulder.

“i’m sorry for whatever i did,” he mumbles. “i don’t know what it is, but i’ll fix it.”

you glance at him out of the corner of your eye but say nothing.

jake dramatically lets his head fall against you. “babe,” he whines.

you focus on buttering your toast.

“this is so cruel,” he mutters. “you know how much i love your voice.”

he starts swaying you side to side, squeezing you tighter. “just say one thing. anything. insult me. call me ugly. i don’t care, just talk to me.”

you almost break right then and there.

almost.

instead, you finish your toast, grab a plate, and move to the couch. jake follows immediately, plopping down beside you with an exaggerated sigh. he dramatically flops against your side, making himself comfortable with half his weight on you.

you do your best to ignore him as you eat.

he buries his face into your shoulder. “you’re so mean,” he mumbles.

you don’t react.

he shifts, lying down fully across your lap, looking up at you with big, pleading eyes. “please?”

you bite your lip to keep from smiling.

jake lets out another loud sigh. “fine. i’ll just text you, then.”

you watch as he pulls out his phone and starts typing. a second later, your phone buzzes on the table.

jake: are you okay? :(

another buzz.

jake: do u hate me

another.

jake: i miss u even though ur right here

he peeks up at you, eyes hopeful. you don’t respond.

his lips wobble.

another text.

jake: babe pls just say something ur killing me here

when you don’t react, he groans loudly, shoving his face into your stomach.

“this is literally the worst thing that has ever happened to me,” he mumbles against you.

you finally crack a little smile but quickly hide it before he can see.

he sighs again, dramatically rolling onto his side. he looks so genuinely sad now, lips still in a pout, his brows furrowed like he’s deep in thought.

you stare at him for a long moment, fingers twitching with the need to reach out and soothe him.

and then he mumbles, “maybe you finally realized i’m too annoying to love.”

your heart absolutely shatters.

that’s it. prank over.

you put your plate aside and immediately grab his face, forcing him to look at you. “jake, oh my god,” you blurt out, breaking your silence.

his eyes widen, but instead of the smug grin you expect, his lips press together tightly. he blinks once, twice. then a single tear rolls down his cheek.

your stomach drops.

“jake—”

he sniffles dramatically. “you really weren’t gonna talk to me all day?” his voice wobbles slightly, but the way his lips twitch gives him away.

“wait,” you narrow your eyes, scanning his face. “are you actually crying or are you faking it?”

another tear falls, and jake doesn’t even bother wiping it away. instead, he just lets out the most heart-wrenching sigh, draping himself across your lap again. “you tell me,” he murmurs.

guilt crashes over you in waves.

“oh my god, baby,” you whisper, frantically cupping his face. “i’m so sorry, i was just—”

his lips suddenly twitch into a tiny, barely-there smile.

your hands freeze.

his teary eyes peek up at you, and then, just like that, the grin breaks through.

realization smacks you in the face.

“jake,” you breathe.

he sniffles again, blinking innocently. “yes, my love?”

“you’re such a little—” you push his shoulder, and he bursts into laughter, rolling onto his back as you glare down at him.

“i knew you’d break first,” he teases between giggles, wiping at his damp cheeks. “but hey, i really did get emotional for a second.”

“i can't stand you.”

“no, you can't,” he sings, sitting up and tugging you onto his lap. “you love me, which is why you gave in.”

you huff, crossing your arms, but the warmth in his eyes softens you.

he presses a gentle kiss to your temple. “admit it,” he whispers. “you’d never last a whole day ignoring me.”

you want to argue, but… he’s right. you roll your eyes and let out a sigh. “yeah, yeah.”

“so,” he tilts his head, eyes twinkling, “can i have a proper ‘i love you’ now?”

you pretend to hesitate, but when he gives you that soft, lovestruck look, you cave.

“i love you, jake.”

his grin stretches wide, dimples appearing. “love you more, even if you’re mean to me.”

you flick his forehead which is met with a small whine but he just laughs, pulling you closer.

⋆。°✩ Celebrating Valentine's Day

As you leaned back in your chair, you wondered how much longer this work could drag on. One hour? Two? Four? The thought alone made you feel drained.

Things like this wear you out the most. Having an online meeting is one thing, but dealing with foreign guests and board members—on top of a hectic schedule and the constant pressure—was something else entirely.

Suddenly, you felt a blistering, frozen kiss against your cheek.

"Ah!" You jolted, turning slowly to see your handsome lover holding out a drink for you. You wiped the sweat from your forehead as he brought the cup close.

"Bored?" he asked, his voice deep and smooth.

"You know it," you replied, rolling your eyes.

Ni-ki walked closer and set a drink down on your desk, landing it safely atop a small wooden coaster.

"Ohh! Matcha!" you cheered, spotting the familiar green hue. Of course, he ordered your favorite.

Ni-ki smiled at you, then playfully pinched your cheek. "Don’t get sleepy. It’s important, right?" he teased. And it WAS important.

"Ugh... they’re just talking." You couldn’t help but roll your eyes again.

"And?" Ni-ki raised an eyebrow, noticing how deflated you looked in your chair. "You gotta work. Unless you want me to drink that milk tea of yours?"

"Waa, no!" you exclaimed, your eyes wide.

Ni-ki laughed, doubling over as soft cackles escaped him.

"Leave it!" you pleaded.

"Alright, alright, I’ll let it be." Ni-ki turned to head back to the living room. "I’ll just be here."

"No work?" you asked, raising an eyebrow.

"No work," Ni-ki replied casually, strolling out. "So you’ve got me for the day."

You barely noticed his last words as the volume of your meeting suddenly surged in your ear.

"Thank you for the drink, hon!" you called out, trying to shout over the noise.

Ni-ki smiled as he settled onto the couch, making himself comfortable while he waited for you to finish.

Sure, it was Valentine’s Day, but neither you nor Ni-ki needed a special occasion to express your love. Through ups and downs, you always found ways to mend mistakes and be there for each other. Ni-ki cherished your resilience and determination as you pursued your dreams while building a life together. He felt a sense of fulfillment, knowing he had a meaningful purpose beyond just being someone’s idol.

He was yours. And you were his. He was fulfilled.

⋆。°✩ Celebrating Valentine's Day

"Oh lordie," you muttered under your breath, stifling a yawn. You slowly swiveled your chair and glanced at the clock on the wall.

"Oh my god!" you gasped. "I’ve been here for that long?!"

Rushing to get out of your office, you quickly slipped on your inside slippers and sprinted to the door.

As you opened it, a gentle breeze greeted you, and you saw the television screen playing what seemed to be a Nat Geo documentary.

"Pfft…" you snickered. "Of course he’s watching ducks."

You walked slowly into the living room, taking in the comfortable couch and the equally comfortable man sprawled out on his side.

"Why is he hugging the couch again?" you mumbled, remembering how chaotic Ni-ki could be when he slept.

As you approached, you gently lifted one of his hanging legs to place it down on the couch again.

He let out a deep groan and turned onto his back, still lost in slumber.

You couldn’t help but admire his features; his lips looked irresistibly seductive at that moment.

With three cautious steps, you knelt beside him and laid your legs on the floor, inching closer to his face. Your fingers brushed against his soft cheeks.

"And you say you’re not cute anymore," you grinned, swiping a bit of hair from his beautiful face.

"Aren’t you something..." you pondered aloud.

"I want something," Ni-ki mumbled, eyes still shut, startling you for a moment.

"Goodn—What do you want?" you teased, holding his sleepy hand in yours.

"Isn’t it obvious?" he pouted, his lips teasingly close to a smile. With his eyes closed, it seemed he was pretending to be asleep, maybe just waiting for a kiss.

You rolled your eyes, pretending to be annoyed, but deep down, you loved this playful side of him.

Then, you leaned in and placed a perfect kiss on his lips, the warmth so fine and sprinkled with just the right amount of love. The moment felt surreal; who in their right mind would waste such a beautiful experience?

None. No one at all. Certainly not you.

"Mmh," Ni-ki hummed, "you taste so good."

You laughed, resting your hand against his chest as you felt yourself getting lost in the moment.

"You!" you sniffed playfully, inhaling a fresh breath of air. "You’re so annoying!"

Ni-ki smiled at you, his eyes slowly opening.

"I know," he said, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "And I know you can’t say anything else that works as well as that."

He cupped your face gently. "Thank you, hon."

"Mhm."

"For being here with me. Every day. Every second. Every passing moment."

You smiled back. "Heh… that’s so not like you to talk like that."

"So just listen to me," Ni-ki said softly. You nodded, unable to resist his earnest gaze.

"I will forever thank you," he continued, his heart full of gratitude. "Even if it’s Valentine’s Day or not."

You shot him a surprised look. "It was?!"

"Pff," Ni-ki snickered.

"Hey! Hon!"

"It was," he confirmed. "But it doesn’t matter; I had a good rest."

"But—" you gasped, realizing a thought. "Did you take the day off for us to go out?!"

Ni-ki burst into laughter, propping himself up from where he was lying. "I knew you’d say that! C'mon, hon!"

You looked at him with tears of joy in your eyes. "But!"

"There’s always tomorrow, and the day after that, and every hour we have together in this life," Ni-ki assured you, his hand gently cupping your chin.

"We’re always going to celebrate our love, one way or another."

⋆。°✩ Celebrating Valentine's Day

"Hehehe..." You giggled as the wind blew, sending a shiver under your skin.

It was only natural; you weren’t used to this much cold, but it was okay. You were used to something else.

Someone else.

"Baby!" Jake called out, walking a few paces ahead as he tried to find something on his map. "Taking your time?"

"Yup!" you replied, diligently following the trail while rubbing your hands together. It was February, but the wind still felt frigid. You had packed the warmest coat you could find, yet it seemed you were still unprepared.

What you didn’t notice was Jake, glancing back at you with a long, hopeful look. He was concerned you weren’t tired, bored, or anything else negative about this trip. After all, it was his idea to push through. He felt guilty, knowing you still weren’t quite used to such weather.

"Aish!" Jake exclaimed, hurriedly tucking his phone away in his pocket.

Suddenly, your lover knelt in front of you—but not directly in front, rather with his back facing you.

"What are you—"

"I told you, use my back!" Jake insisted, offering his back for you to ride on. It sounded slightly dirty, but you got the point.

"Ugh, no way." You declined, playfully pinching his ear to tip him off balance.

"Hey!" Jake flinched, then chased after you.

After what felt like your two-hundredth step, a tight warmth enveloped you. It felt good, but not because it was necessarily warm. It was Jake.

"Baby..." he cooed, sounding a little dejected.

"I told you..."

"And I told you back!" He pouted. "Use my back!"

You sighed, a puff of steam escaping your lips. Jake walked to your side and held your hand.

"I didn’t work so hard to get rejected after proving my strength, baby." He looked at you, confidence radiating from him. You couldn’t help but laugh.

"Ugh, is this the part where you let me touch your muscles or something to prove you’re 'built right'?"

"I would!" Jake raised his hands dramatically. "But it’s freezing… we can skip that part. What’s important is that you get on my back."

Jake insisted, turning around again to offer his back.

"You’re hopeless." You sighed with a cheerful laugh.

"I am!" Jake replied, grinning. "In love with you~"

You playfully swatted his neck as he carefully hoisted you onto his back for a piggyback ride. With every step toward the top, Jake took his time to keep you safe.

"Why is it called a piggyback?" he suddenly asked.

"You're asking me that question?" you shot back.

"What? I’m curious!" he said, genuinely invested.

"Uhh..." you stalled, trying to think.

"Come on!" Jake continued walking, keeping the conversation going. "Between us, there are at least two brain cells. And they all belong to you."

You laughed. "Jake, if humans only had that much, I don’t think they’d be alive."

Jake gasped in mock horror. "Just answer me, babe! Why is it called piggyback?"

You sighed, burying your face in his nape.

"Etymology says that the word may have been corrupted or altered through time… they say the original word must’ve been 'pickaback,' then before that 'pickapack,' then 'pickpack.'" You groaned, regretting how useless that knowledge felt.

"See?" Jake cheered. "You’re the smartest, most handsome, and most adorable boyfriend one could love. I’m just so proud."

It always warmed your heart when Jake spoke like that. He was genuine, and you knew he meant every word.

"Were you thinking it was some kind of person carrying a pig?" you asked, holding onto his shoulder tightly.

"N-no...?" Jake glanced away, clearly having thought that.

You sighed. "No, Jake, you can’t tame a pig with carrots. And you can’t bait them with a carrot on a stick either."

"C’mon, that’s childish!" Jake defended himself. He had a reputation to uphold.

"Yet you still think Minecraft's based on real life," you snickered. "Fine, fine."

Jake laughed, knowing he might have looked a tad silly. But real or not, he knew his feelings for you were genuine.

You were real, and so was he. This relationship? It was real. This love? It was real.

⋆。°✩ Celebrating Valentine's Day

"Hah!" Jake paused in his tracks after a few more steps, seemingly out of breath.

Once you both checked around to see if you were at the right spot, you quickly jumped off his back.

"You’re not bad," you jested, causing Jake to give you an incredulous look.

"Not bad?" he feigned offense, raising his voice playfully.

"Fineeee." You walked toward him and gave him a sweet kiss. "Five stars. Would ride again."

Jake blushed, pouting his bottom lip out with raised eyebrows.

"Oh come on!" You swatted his side as he reacted dramatically—predictably, yet still endearingly.

As you continued walking to where Jake had led you, he suddenly pointed excitedly.

"Baby, look!" Jake exclaimed, gesturing toward a field. "Here!"

Curious, you followed his finger and soon saw what he was excited about.

"AAAAAAAA!!" You swore you could’ve pushed Jake over the fence as you screamed in delight.

"Yeah! Yeah!" Jake cheered, obviously thrilled to see you so happy.

"LLAMAS!!" you shouted confidently, pointing toward the large herd gathering nearby.

"Close enough!" Jake chuckled, planting a kiss on your head. It was actually a herd of alpacas.

Walking slowly and finding your place in line, you couldn’t help but gaze at the adorable herd. And Jake? Well, he couldn’t help but gaze at you. You and only you.

"Happy Valentine’s," he whispered softly by your ear.

You rested your head against his padded chest, sneaking your hands inside his coat to feel that authentic Jake warmth.

"Thank you, my Valentine," you replied, your tone making Jake’s heart swell.

"Mhm…" he hummed back, caressing your side and hugging you like a koala. "Gonna hug you like this forever. Deal?"

"Never let go then." You looked up at him with a smile that could melt the thickest layers of ice.

Jake nodded. There were no other words but "Never." Or four. "Letting," "You," and "Go."

Or five. "Ever."

He showered you with kisses right then and there, each one tickling your cold skin. You flinched and cackled like a wacky, flailing inflatable tube man out of air. Hopefully, no one batted an eye at how loud you two were.

⋆。°✩ Celebrating Valentine's Day

"Isn't this the set I gave you for your birthday?" Jay asked as he stumbled through your shared kitchen cabinets, clearly searching for something—a pot or two.

"Oh my god, yeah!" You shot a quick glance in his direction, setting down the groceries you had just brought from your car.

It had been a wild day, but maybe not that wild. You' and Jay had only gone to the grocery store for several essentials and missing ingredients, but there were huge lines everywhere. You could only guess everyone had the same idea as you and Jay 0 a nice Valentine's dinner at home.

"Oh!" Jay moved to the side as you quickly darted past him to grab the pots yourself. "What's the rush?"

"Ugh..." You sighed, taking a moment to catch your breath. "I just feel... awful."

"Huh?" Jay drew closer to you.

"I mean," you looked away, wiping the sweat from your brow, "you gave me this special set, and I STILL haven't used it..."

Jay looked at you, his expression softening as he understood.

"Jagi."

"Hmm?"

"Are you embarrassed because I brought you something like this?"

"I— No!" You looked away, flustered. "Listen, it's a good set! I'm just—"

Jay placed both his hands on your shoulders, reassuring you with a warm smile. "Jagi, don't feel bad." He moved a bit closer. "You must be keeping them for a reason, right?"

"Yeah." You looked away, fidgeting with your fingers. "I didn't want to touch them because they're a gift from you... you know me..."

Jay laughed lightly, looking at you once more. "Don't worry. We can have all the pots and pans in the world. If you treasure these pieces that much, we can—"

"We can!" You spoke loudly, catching your lover off guard.

"I—I mean... we can use it!" You smiled back at him. "It's time."

Jay couldn't help but beam with joy, planting a gentle kiss on your forehead as a 'thank you' before grabbing the pots himself.

"H-hey!" You tried to stand up as you took in that gentle moment for a bit. "I told you, jagi. I'm helping!"

He nodded as he prepared the pots and pans, wiping them down with a kitchen towel nearby. "Mhm."

"Mhm? I can?"

"You can." He pointed at the grocery bags behind him. "Have a start by taking out and preparing the ingredients."

Snapping back to reality, you immediately got to work. You knew how much Jay loved cooking, so you had to do your best, too.

In Jay's eyes, you seemed excited and engaged. It had been a while since you two had done a homemade dinner date. Usually, it was a quick pot of ramyeon or takeout from various restaurants.

But today was special—he was cooking with you.

Jay smiled wide as he watched you passionately prepare the food you brought home.

He took a moment to walk over to you, admiring how your hands expertly grazed the vegetables and meat with a sharp knife and precision.

"You do that so well," Jay said softly near your ear, making a blush creep onto your cheeks.

"Uh... I try..." You stammered, feeling shy under his gaze.

"You're an expert," he assured you, holding your hands together and guiding you as you cut the leeks. "But you always seem to be distracted every once in a while."

You knew what he was doing at that moment. All it took was Jay's fatal lower register and his breath close to you, his signature smirk playing on his lips.

"You're despicable..." You muttered, unable to hide your smile.

"Sure." Jay continued to gaze at you, admiring how your handsome face contrasted with his own. "And you're so undeniably delectable in every angle I see you." He traced your jaw with his own finger, slowly coming down towards your chest.

Without thinking, you turned around and kissed him right there. You set the knife aside, and Jay's fingers slipped inside your sleeves, pulling you closer.

With a gentle lift, you continued to kiss him, your back pressed against the kitchen column as all of his weight fall upon you. Jay's sorted collection of fine liquor on the column shook slightly with the movement.

"Be careful..." Jay whispered, but you couldn’t help yourself, kissing him again, indulging in the sweetness of his lips and letting yourself melt onto him.

In that moment, Jay could only confirm one thing: he couldn't control himself with you right beside him. And neither can you.

And that he loves you. He really loves you. So much. Okay, maybe that’s two things.

⋆。°✩ Celebrating Valentine's Day

"This is so good!" you exclaimed, savoring the dish Jay had made, relishing the flavors that danced on your tongue.

Jay chuckled lightly, sipping a full glass of cabernet sauvignon. He loved having you as his drinking buddy; it made enjoying his wine so much more worthwhile. And the aftermath of the evening? That was definitely his favorite part.

You noticed Jay’s dazed look, almost seductive yet still curious.

"We just made out for 30 minutes," you said as you took a bite of the juicy sirloin steak on your other plate, not letting the moment go to waste. Jay did pay a hefty sum for it, no matter how much you insisted against it.

"Oh?" Jay replied, his tone inquisitive. "Pray tell, why are you aware of the time we spent doing so?"

You sighed in bashful embarrassment. "You and your urges..."

"Hmm?" Jay leaned in closer, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "You don’t like it when I’m like this?"

"I don’t... know," you admitted, feeling the heat rise in your cheeks. "It's so unfamiliar to me that I feel like I'm cheating... o-on you... with you..." You buried your face in your hands, while your lover laughed at your 'misery.'

"Hehe." You sighed again, hearing him laugh it off.

"What?"

"You're adorable, jagi," Jay smiled earnestly. "I just wanted to be something different for Valentine's."

"I roll my eyes as my ridiculous boyfriend tries to seduce me," you muttered under your breath. "It's just—"

"I love you." Jay's hand inched towards yours, his eyes sincere.

You locked eyes with him, seeing the genuine affection and care reflected there. That was Jay.

"I love you," you replied. "But don’t be too forward again! Or atleast warn me? My heart can’t take it."

Jay burst into laughter, almost throwing his glass aside.

"Don’t laugh!"

"What?" Jay asked, adjusting his chair. "I always want you. I just seem so nonchalant about it, but today, I've crossed my own line, and I gotta admit... that was fun."

You sighed one last time. "Is this your Valentine's Day gift?"

You caught Jay off-guard yet again, who could only lay back in his chair and surrender. "You got me."

"Pfft." You laughed, clearly amused. "Thank you."

After dinner, Jay’s eyes sparkled with excitement. "How about we make dessert together? I was thinking leche flan."

You grinned, remembering how your family made it during special occasions. "That sounds perfect! I haven't made it in ages."

⋆。°✩ Celebrating Valentine's Day

As you gathered the ingredients insise your drawers and so, you felt a rush of nostalgia. You come from a family that had always been so loving and family-oriented, and making leche flan was a tradition that brought everyone together. You shared stories with Jay about your parents and how they had taught you the significance growing, staying, living, and being in-love together.

"I've always admired your bond with your family..." Jay said, breaking your reverie. "It makes me cherish our time together even more."

You smiled, feeling warmth spread through your heart. "They taught me all about what they knew about love. It's not just about how one person seems attractive, or impressive ... it’s about nurturing those bonds. I have that with you."

Jay nodded, his eyes sparkling. "I feel the same way. It’s like every moment we share is part of a bigger picture."

As you began preparing the leche flan, you took turns mixing the ingredients, laughing at the splashes of sweetened condensed milk that ended up on Jay’s cheek. "Look at you! You look like a mess," you teased.

He grinned, playfully wiping his cheek with the back of his hand. "Well, I think it adds character." You then kissed the splash just right off his cheek and you swore he got beet red for a while.

You both poured the mixture into a mold, Jay holding it steady while you carefully added the caramelized sugar. "See how it blends? Gosh I'm pumped!" you exclaimed, picturing how it would taste once it was chilled.

"I can already sense this flan is going to be a masterpiece," Jay said, leaning in with a playful glint in his eyes. "Just like us—full of flavor, a bit unpredictable, but ultimately beautiful."

You couldn’t help but smile at the thought, feeling the warmth radiate between you. "Mmh... just like the flan, every moment we share makes it all worthwhile."

Once the flan was safely nestled in the fridge to chill, you turned to Jay and wrapped your arms around him, feeling the comfort of his presence. "Thank you for ... loving me."

He pulled you closer. "There’s nowhere else I’d rather be." He then pressed a tender kiss to your forehead. "Loving you, that is."

You chuckled, lightly tapping him. "We're so sappy..."

"Is that SAP-possed to be funny?" Jay shot a joke at you. All you can do is burst into tears. lounging on the floor like a loon.

You we're definitely his best audience for his stand-up comedy.

⋆。°✩ [ch.1] For When You Miss Me

The stage lights are too bright.

They always are—blinding, artificial suns that bleach the room into a watercolor blur. You squint against them, fingers absently strumming your guitar as the crowd murmurs beneath the clink of champagne glasses.

The venue is all exposed brick and twinkling fairy lights, the kind of place you’d have mocked two years ago. Now, you’re just background noise to someone else’s love story.

"You’re up next." Leah’s voice cuts through the hum, her manicured fingers digging into your shoulder—nervous energy. The sequins on her dress catch the light like shattered glass.

"Play something romantic. But, like… not too romantic. Sarah’s grandma thinks love songs are ‘sinful.’"

You snort, plucking a sour note on purpose. "So, no ‘Careless Whisper’?"

"God, no." She grins, but it fades fast.

Her eyes dart toward the crowd, then back to you. "Hey… you okay? You’ve been a little bit pale lately—"

"I’m fine." The lie tastes stale. You twist a tuning peg too hard; the string protests with a sharp twang.

“Oop?”

“There it goes~”

“Psh.” Leah exhales through her nose.

"Heads up, but Jay’s here."

Your fingers freeze mid-strum. You think the discordant echo hangs in the air—a fitting soundtrack.

"Shit," you mutter.

"She was Sarah’s tutor, so she had to invite him," she adds, her voice low.

"Just… brace yourself."

Your stomach knots. "… anyone with him?’"

"Tall brunette girl. Clean fit with a high pony. Around our age. Pretty. A lawyer too, I heard?" Leah grimaces. "She’s got that whole ‘I do hot yoga and would destroy you in court’ vibe."

"Fantastic." You reach for your water bottle, but your hands betray you—trembling just enough to make the plastic crinkle. The condensation drips onto your jeans, cold and clammy.

You don’t look. Not at first.

Instead, you bury yourself in the set—some anemic Ed Sheeran cover, then a neutered Beatles rendition.

Safe. Soulless. Distracting.

The crowd barely reacts. A few aunties tap their heels; a groomsman drunkenly mouths "play ‘Wonderwall’" at you. You ignore him.

But then Sarah, Leah’s new wife, commandeers the mic. Her grin is all mischief.

"Okay, time for a special request!" she announces like she’s not about to detonate a grenade in your chest.

"This one’s for all the hopeless romantics."

She looks at you with a grinning smile, almost teasing.

"Play Way Back Into Love!"

Of fucking course.

You haven’t touched this song since the breakup. Since … him.

Not because it’s hard—it’s easy, four chords and a melody so saccharine it should come with a dental warning—but because it was yours. The song you and Jay butchered in the car, harmonizing off-key until your lungs ached. The one he’d hum against your collarbone at 3 AM, his voice gravelly with sleep.

Now, here it is. Taunting you.

You take a breath—shaky, unsteady—and start playing.

"I’ve been living with a shadow overhead…"

Your voice cracks. You clear your throat and try again.

"I’ve been sleeping with a cloud above my bed…"

And then—because the universe is a sadistic bastard—you look towards the audience.

There he is.

Jay.

Sitting at a table near the back, wearing something so elegant you know the gods made it for him and only him to wear. His hair is bleached now, swept to the side in a way that suggests actual effort, and his fingers are wrapped tight around his champagne flute, knuckles blanching white.

And at that moment? He’s staring at you.

Not the polite, detached gaze of an ex. No—this is raw, hungry like he’s trying to memorize the way your lips shape the words he once whispered against your skin.

Your brain short-circuits.

"I’ve been—uh—" You fumble the lyric. "Solitary… something."

A few guests chuckle, mistaking it for charm.

Jay doesn’t laugh. His lips part, just slightly, like he’s about to sing along—but then she leans in.

The girlfriend.

Tall, brunette, with the posture of someone who’s never slouched a day in her life. She murmurs something in Jay’s ear, her manicured hand settling on his forearm—possessive.

Jay flinches. Just once. Then he looks away.

And just like that, the spell breaks.

˚ ✦ . .   ˚ . . ★⋆. ✦ . .  ˚ . ✦ ˚    ˚ .˚

You flee the stage the second the song ends, beelining for the bar like it’s salvation.

"Whiskey. Neat please," you tell the bartender. "Actually, make it a double."

As you sit there all alone, the first glass burns; the second barely registers. You’re halfway through your third when that voice cuts through the haze.

"You still forget the lyrics."

You turn.

Jay’s standing there, smirking, but his grip on his drink is white-knuckled.

"Yeah, well," you shrug, "some things never change."

A beat of silence. And then:

"You still sound good," Jay says softly.

"You look good," you blurt.

Shit.

His cheeks flush pink, but he doesn’t call you out. "Thanks.”

Just then, you notice an unfamiliar motion near you, a person almost to your side.

“Uh… and this is Naomi." He gestures to the woman beside him.

"Hi, Naomi Natten." She says, extending a hand. Her grip is firm, her smile polished. "Jay’s told me a lot about you."

You force a grin. "All lies, I’m sure."

Jay chokes on his drink.

Naomi, oblivious, laughs. "He said you’re a great musician. And, uh…" She glances at Jay. "That you burn toast like it’s your job. Is that true?"

"Wow," you deadpan. "That’s what stuck?"

Jay’s expression flickers—guilt? regret?—before he forces a chuckle. "Among other things."

Another silence.

You then stare into your whiskey, searching for words that don’t exist.

"So," you finally say, "how’d you two meet?"

"Law school," Naomi says brightly. "He was assisting one of our professors in one of my course subjects. I then had the guts to torture him into asking me out."

Jay rolls his eyes, but there’s affection in it. "She’s joking. Mostly."

"Mhm." You swallow the rest of your drink.

"Congratulations." God, it’s burning hot.

Silence stayed for a minute and let a smooth breeze in before a loud soundtrack played in the middle of the venue.

“Wait, let’s dance!” Distracted, Naomi pulled Jay’s arm, talking as if you weren’t even there.

"W-We should go," Jay says abruptly. "But… it was good seeing you." His voice was faltering as the music drowned his cadence.

He hesitates like he wants to say more, but Naomi’s already steering him toward the dance floor.

You watch them go, whiskey burning your throat.

"Yeah," you mutter. "Good seeing you too."

˚ ✦ . .   ˚ . . ★⋆. ✦ . .  ˚ . ✦ ˚    ˚ .˚

It was quiet when you got home, the kind of silence that makes your ears ring. The wedding's music still echoed in your head, as if remnants of melodies that wouldn't leave you alone.

As heat crept up your body, you took off almost everything that wrapped you until you got to your room - your suit jacket first, then the tie that felt like it had been choking you all night, and finally those fancy shoes that never quite felt right.

Feeling the bits of tiredness and exhaustion from the event you played in, your eyes landed on a simple cardboard box in the corner. It sat there like a time capsule, gathering dust in the shadows of your bedroom.

As simple as it was, it wasn't ever just one. It was tons of stacked boxes, old and new, each one holding pieces of your past. It wasn't noticeable to anyone else, but every box with it was tucked into the side after you moved in almost eight months ago, like you were trying to hide them even from yourself.

Walking groggily, fighting against the whiskey still warming your blood, you manage to carry one of them and land it on top of your soft mattress. The cardboard felt rough under your fingers, worn at the edges from too many moves.

Scrounging through your messy stuff - old receipts, notes from physics, forgotten birthday cards, ticket stubs from concerts you barely remember - you notice a gleaming antique at the bottom of it all. An old CD case with a scratched plastic cover, the kind nobody uses anymore.

With one gust of air, you wiped down every dust on its surface, watching the particles dance in the dim light of your bedroom lamp.

Opening the case with shaking hands, you see a vintage disk that almost shone brightly with its rainbow colors, like an oil slick caught in sunlight.

The sharpie on the label has faded, but the words still gut you:

FOR WHEN YOU MISS ME — JAY

You pop it into your ancient CD player, just an arm’s length from the box you’ve got it from.

Right there, the first and only track plays. Silence plays in the back as dread looms over what could play from this relic of your past.

"I’ve been living with a shadow overhead…"

You close your eyes, lingering in the presence of his silky voice.

And for the first time in four years, you let yourself remember.

⋆。°✩ Jake And His Heart Beating For You

"Is he sleeping?" Joey moved an inch closer as she finally got to her seat.

"Ugh, don't even ask me." Sunoo rolled his eyes as he grabbed a hot corndog from Joey's hand. "He's been like that since he got here."

Clearly, Joey had brought some goods from the snack stands, and she took a good look at your figure again.

"Are you sick or som-?"

"I'm not!" You defended, your voice barely above a whisper. "Shh!"

"Sir, did you just 'shush' me?!" Joey acted mock-offended, settling into her seat with some force.

"I think he did." Sunoo smirked, looking at you with a devious side-eye.

"Ugh, what are you two on about now..." You continued to shrink yourself in your seat, trying to blend into the crowd.

"Take that off!" Joey grabbed the large overcoat you'd wrapped around your body.

"Ah!" You yelped, clutching the coat tightly.

"Ugh, about time!" Sunoo raised his hand for a high-five, and Joey reciprocated with a grin.

"Hey!" You spoke, looking at your two best friends. "Are you two ganging up on me?"

The two snickered, their eyes gleaming with amusement.

"He's totally mad." Joey whispered.

"He's definitely fuming." Sunoo spoke quietly.

"I'm still here!" You tried to pinch their ears, earning yelps from both.

"Ow ow, let it go!" Joey spoke, squirming away.

"Ahh! You!!!" Sunoo tried to remove your finger before you let him go.

"Now, are you two finished?" You crossed your arms, grabbing your overcoat from Joey.

Sunoo retreated to his seat, rubbing the part of his ear you'd pinched. Joey shot you an obvious question.

"So Jake-?"

"AAAAAAA!" You interrupted, clearly in a situation.

"Don't even." Sunoo spoke, waving his hand dismissively.

Joey looked at Sunoo, then back at you. She observed you and knew immediately what was going on.

"Oh, you two talked, didn't you?" Joey looked at you, her intuition sparking.

Sunoo sat up and gasped. "You did?!"

"H-how d-?"

"Mr. ACTING president, I can literally tell what you're all about right now." Joey smugly raised her chin towards you, pointing to the field. "It's obvious you like hi-?"

"AAAAA!!!" You tried to scream, covering your ears.

"Oh, don't be so dramatic!" She spoke.

"But he doesn't want to admit it." Sunoo took a good look at you, shaking his head earnestly. He couldn't take it anymore. "Honestly."

"I just!" You tried to speak. "Why m... me? Argh!"

The two looked at you, then at each other.

"That's what you're worried about?" Joey shot you an almost indignant look. "For real?!"

"He's having a crisis." Sunoo inhaled deeply. "He thinks Jake's just messing with him."

"That or he's being genuine." Joey adjusted herself in her seat. "You can tell he's trying to impress you."

And you couldn't help but agree. For all the times you'd encountered Jake, he'd always tried. One way or another, he was trying his best to get your attention.

And now, he definitely had your gaze.

"I'm just..." You shrunk in your seat again. "I'm just a guy, you know?"

"Oh, shut it and be confident!" Sunoo pulled you out of your chair, forcing you to cooperate unwillingly. "And sit properly; you're the ACTING school council president!"

"Aaaaaargghhh..." You groaned. That's all you could do.

And now, you couldn't take him off your mind. Especially that golden smile he seemed so proud to show off in front of you.

Joey, knowing you were feeling overwhelmed by these new emotions, tried to settle you down.

"Listen, if you can't bear the Jake-ness of it all-?"

"The what?"

"The Jake-ness."

"Oh. Psh." Sunoo retorted.

"What?" Joey looked at him.

"Continue." Sunoo flapped his hand dismissively.

"Okay, anyways... You should try and distract yourself with the game right now. The committee didn't elect you to just do nothing, right?" Joey tapped your back, letting you breathe for a second.

That's right. You were tasked and obliged to attend the game as the ACTING student council president. It wasn't a big deal to get in as yourself, but people were paying close attention as you did your duties. You sat up straight, realizing this. You weren't just here for one reason.

"That's right..." You sighed. "I'm weird, aren't I?"

"We know." The two shared the same sentiment.

"Hey!" You pouted. "You're not supposed to agree with that."

"But you're our weirdo." Sunoo smiled.

"So be weird all you like. Mister Weirdo." Joey poked your cheek, rolling your eyes.

In a way, it comforted you. To have these friends by your side. But of course, they couldn't help you take Jake off your mind. They even seem supportive of it ... too supportive even. You tried to relax your back on the leather covered seat, waiting for the game to start.

Suddenly, the whistles were blown. That was the sign of the teams' entrance for the championship.

In this match, whoever won would make it to the state championships. Calling it a big deal was an understatement. It was a HUGE deal. Especially since the opposing team was supposedly stronger than in previous years.

"And ladies and gentlemen, let's welcome them to the stage. Last and not least, the Peterson Saints!" A loud roar erupted from your side of the field. As much as this was your home court, the crowd couldn't help but yell their hearts out, seeing their pride and honor.

And there he was, beaming with his golden smile—Jake Sim. The Prodigy of the Ages, The Golden Ace, and the MVP for the 3rd consecutive year. All those monickers and titles bore his achievements and qualifications. He was truly something special.

Yet you could look at him with such a look. Out of all the people in this world, this one? This lucky guy who deserved a better person was in love with you? You had to laugh.

Why couldn't you believe that maybe this was the universe appreciating you? All these thoughts lingered in your head.

As if by chance, Jake spotted you quickly and smiled wide, waving his hand. Clearly, he'd expected to see you. He was beyond excited to have you there.

And that broke you. You could only smile back and wave, feeling chills down your spine. He really did want you to see him.

He eyes-locked with you, as if saying, "Watch me." And that you did.

⋆。°✩ Jake And His Heart Beating For You

The Peterson Saints took their positions on the field, and the game began. The opposing team, the Ironclad Titans, was known for their aggressive plays and solid defense. Jake, as the captain, called out plays to his teammates, his voice clear and confident. The crowd roared as the game started, and the energy on the field was electric.

"Keep them grounded, we can't let them breach us early!" Jake commanded, his teammates getting into their positions.

The first half was intense. The Titans were relentless, pushing the Saints to their limits. Jake, however, was a force to be reckoned with. He dodged tackles with ease, his movements fluid and calculated. But despite his efforts, the Saints were struggling to keep up. The Titans' defense was impenetrable, and by halftime, they were leading by a significant margin.

While halftime was up, Jake noticed one of his teammates, Bush, flipping over like a pillow in the middle of the field, or at least, that's what he was acting like.

"Bush, you good?" Jake panted, reaching out his hand towards the other.

"Get a life." Bush swatted Jake's hand, standing up by himself.

Jake couldn't just react then and there, but that really felt awful. Still, he has to go, and so he did.

As the teams headed to the locker rooms, tensions ran high. Jake's teammates were frustrated, and some were on the verge of giving up. That's when two of the players, Bush and Trell, started undermining Jake's tactics, blaming him for their poor performance. They accused him of being too selfish and not trusting his teammates enough, even though at best, they themselves couldn't really contribute anything on the field at all.

"You were hogging the ball!" Trell shouted. "Or worse, passing it down to these newbies!"

"He was trying to get it to score, you dumbass!" Another teammate seemingly defended Jake's actions, with more agreeing in unison.

"Well, we don't see it that way!" Bush stands tall, trying to put some intimidation onto the others. "Buttering yourself up for another win?"

One of Jake's teammates ultimately wanted to punch the guy, but Jake stopped him as soon as he lifted his fist.

"No," Jake mouthed.

Ever the leader, Jake didn't let their negativity get to him. He listened calmly, then addressed the team with a steady voice.

"We can do this," he said. "We just need to work together. Trust each other, and trust the plays. We've trained for this."

His words inspired the team, and they returned to the field with renewed determination. The second half was a completely different story.

The Saints fought back with everything they had. Jake led the charge, making incredible plays and encouraging his teammates. The crowd was on their feet, cheering wildly as the Saints slowly closed the gap.

"GO SAINTS GO!! GO SAINTS GO!! GO SAINTS GO!!" The crowd erupted in glorious cheers. Even you couldn't help but get your voice louder at the sound of it.

And Jake? One glance at your cheers was all he needed for a boost. The way your eyes closed as you tried to shout their team's cheer louder, or the way your voice was definitely getting higher as nerves almost popped from your neck, or even how excited you are jumping around and cheering for them? That was heaven for him, just to see you support and appreciate all of his and his team's hard work.

He loved that. And he loved you too.

"Good job, Saints!" Jake cheered with his hands towards his teammates. The others responded with the same sentiment, those closer to each other patting backs and hyping each other.

In the final minutes of the game, the score was neck and neck. The tension was palpable. Jake had the ball, and the crowd held their breath as he made his way down the field. With seconds left on the clock, he lined up for the final shot. The Titans' defense was tight, but Jake was unfazed.

"One ball..." Jake took a deep breath.

He looked closely at the goal, seemingly trying to get the aim at this second.

"One goal." He took his one last millisecond, inching away at the true kick.

With a swift, powerful motion, he released the ball. Time seemed to slow as it soared through the air, heading straight for the goal.

The crowd erupted into cheers as the ball scored, securing the Saints' victory. Jake was mobbed by his teammates, and the crowd chanted his name.

He'd done it again—the Golden Ace had proven his worth.

As the Saints celebrated their win, Jake spotted you in the distance. He mouthed, "I won!" with a wide, triumphant smile.

"You did!" You mouthed back, pride swelling in your chest.

"Thank you for coming." He mouthed again. "Backstage?"

You tilted your head, wondering what he meant. There was an area within the field called the backstage, where players and teams rested before the game. You nodded, knowing what he was implying.

"Okay!" You blushed slightly, wondering if this was something normal.

"Yeah!" Jake mouthed, before being carried away by his team.

You could only laugh as you left slowly, your best friends chuckling behind you.

"You two are seriously gonna be something else." Sunoo walked beside you.

"Definitely, I mean, that was too romantic." Joey spoke, walking backward in front of you.

"You guys, stop it." You chuckled. "I'm just proud. Nothing like that at all."

The two shot glances at you as you continued to walk.

"He's definitely into him now." Joey whispered.

"Don't tell me twice." Sunoo spoke, earning a hand chop to his shoulder.

⋆。°✩ Jake And His Heart Beating For You

As you took a seat on a nearby bench, you waited with bated breath for that one guy who'd led you here. The "backstage" wasn't a familiar sight, but it was large and extensive. Even the hallway was long enough to stretch across the field. It was a marvel at how lucky you were to study in this school.

"Glad you came."

"AAAAH!" Jake sprung up close, and you jolted in surprise. He flinched back, and you both laughed, cackling at the stupidity of the moment before calming down.

"Warn me next time!" You punched his shoulder playfully.

"Please! Your face was priceless." Jake continued to laugh, his hand on his face.

"Ugh, you!" You tried to speak, but the words failed to come out.

"You what?" Jake taunted with a smile.

"You..."

"Hmm?" Jake grinned.

"Stop it." You raised your hand.

"Stop what?"

"Stop doing this." You tried to walk back a bit, feeling bothered by the weather suddenly. That or by the temperature.

"Stop me from what?"

"Stop me from—"

Before you could finish, a warm kiss enveloped your lips. It was soft and comfortable, like a feeling of pure sweetness and love—all in one. You couldn't even fight it, even if you tried. At this point, your lips had already remembered Jake's embrace. It was as if they'd already accepted his touch, and you couldn't help but say yes to the feeling of being close to him.

"Mhh..." Jake smiled as he pulled away, his lips lingering for a moment.

"Hahh..." You tried to catch your breath, and Jake giggled at the sight.

"What?" You asked him, still wrapped in his arms.

"It's just..." Jake looked to the side, then faced you again. "You didn't flinch this time."

You rolled your eyes, giving him a look. "I'm just appreciating you. Can't I be charitable?" Your tone soaking in hot sarcasm.

"And I appreciate it." Jake smiled back. "You! I mean ... totally you."

With the personal space between you practically gone, Jake couldn't help but ask.

"So... you want me to try?" Jake asked, a subtle questioning tone laced in his voice. He was still unsure if you were all in with the whole 'loving you back' thing.

You sighed heavily. "I didn't want to think about it, you know?"

"Huh?" Jake tilted his head.

"The way I feel. Deny it." You expressed your emotions, your face contorting into slight stress. "That I don't deserve someone as good as you."

Jake looked at you with disbelief, clearly taken aback. "Hey! I'm not that special."

"But!"

"I don't want you to care about me being ... something, okay? Yes, I do want to impress you, but I don't want that to scare you too." He held your hand.

"Sometimes, I long to hold someone rather than a trophy."

Your heart stung a bit at that. It felt like you were scared, but of course, you never just paid all your attention at anyone's achievements. You wanted to know the people beyond the surface. As much as you tried to not think of it, you knew just how hardworking Jake was, and you didn't want to interfere. But in this new light, you saw a deeper side of him.

You were seeing his real self. That he was willing for you to see it.

"Jake..." Your hands crept up to his shoulders, comforting him in a way.

"I want to date you. Eventually, love you too." Jake smiled. "I don't want these feelings to just go away because I've never felt so much in my life before."

You looked into his eyes. Seeing him being so earnest just ... melted you right then and there. It was a sight to behold.

"I want to love someone I can genuinely be with, without pretenses." Jake held your hands tighter. "And it doesn't matter if you're a guy who's got me going. Nothing changes."

Tears started flooding your eyes at that moment, with Jake noticing sooner. He then raised his gentle fingers to wipe them away.

"Look at you." Jake gazed at you lovingly. "Such a pretty man, no?"

You could only laugh, wiping your own tears yourself. "You too, Jake. You're too beautiful for this world."

"I am, huh?"

"Yup." You booped his pretty nose.

"Then..." He asked with a slight blush. "Would you kiss me?"

"Again?" You tried to scoff at him.

"Mhm." His puppy eyes. His damn puppy eyes...

"Okay..."

And in one final moment, you laid your lips onto his, lingering almost a second longer than before. This time, it was slow, easy, and a little bit lasting.

Jake took a good look at you once more and asked an important question.

"Are we dating now? Or should I just make you my boyfriend?" He asked bluntly.

"Pftt!" You laughed in front of him. "Already? We haven't even done anything!"

"Oh!" Jake pondered for a second. "Should we do 'that' then?"

You shot him a glance. "THAT?! Get yourself together! We just got to this point!"

"Got it, we'll chill for the moment." Jake agreed, his mouth hanging wide at that. "I'll prepare myself for it then." Clearly, he was still uneducated at how these things worked, being with someone he liked and all.

"So, be my boyfriend?" He muttered, his lips pursing through.

"Although I wouldn't mind, dating comes first." You spoke back.

"Got it." Jake nodded in gratitude. "Then boyfriend after."

"I mean ... If you're comfy, why not?" You replied. "I mean the boyfriend bit. If you're comfortable with it, just call me that right now."

"Okay!" Jake giggled at the thought. "I love you, my boyfriend~"

You rolled your eyes, feeling stupidly in love with this guy. Was this really true, or was he just putting on an act to disarm you? As if it really mattered. When he was hugging you tightly and you could feel every beat of his heart, you were definitely doing fine.

"I love you too, Jakey." You mumbled softly, reddening Jake's cheeks easily. He was totally caught off-guard with that nickname.
