I’ve been on a Greek mythology kick lately, so, as a lark, here’s a quick list of a few Star Wars characters and Greek characters I think they resemble:
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Oedipus. Both men are noble of character and have heroic intentions. They are devoted to their adopted families, remarkably competent in their jobs as generals and leaders, and they always try to do the right thing in any situation they encounter. But, both are doomed by the narrative to take part in the downfall of their families and cultures, and all of their heroic efforts come to naught. Both of them ultimately end up punishing themselves for circumstances beyond their control, and perishing in exile.
Anakin Skywalker: Heracles. The most physically powerful heroes of their respective mythos, they earn reputations of renown for their feats of strength and ingenuity. Both men fall under the influence of powerful beings who want to destroy their souls, and end up murdering their entire families in fits of madness. But, both men also eventually come to their senses, and though they can never erase the horrible things they’ve done, they devote the rest of their lives to attempt to make some recompense for their crimes, and ascend to godhood as a result.
Darth Maul: Sisyphus, natch. Local bastard keeps cheating death, and it’s really starting to piss death off. Sentenced to always be working towards a goal that can never be achieved.
Princess Leia: Antigone. Devoted daughter-figures to Obi-Wan Kenobi and Oedipus, respectively. Doomed to deal with the fallout of their predecessor’s choices, and not happy about it. Stubbornly do the right thing in defiance of the law, knowing full well that it will cost them their lives. Ultimately they die before they can see the benefit of their life’s work, but both go out like complete badasses, and their deaths cause chain reactions that eliminate the families of their enemies.
Luke Skywalker: Perseus. “I’m just the simple adopted son of a farmer/fisherman who wants to fight injustice. Oh, my family is now being harmed by that injustice? Game on, motherfucker, I’m gonna punch you out with the help of this cool new sword my mentor got for me. Oh, there’s a princess in danger of being consumed by a monster? Well of COURSE I have to rescue her! And…wait, what the fuck do you mean, my bio dad’s an asshole god?”
Rey: Psyche. Both abandoned by their families because of a curse, both get sucked into a never-ending cosmic family drama that has caused yet another war. Their character arc involves winning over many of the other players in this family drama to try and reconcile them with each other, to mixed effects. Both are brought back from the dead by their love interests, and go on to rebuild their lives after the war’s end.

Donnick babble here we go
I love writing/thinking about/RPing/drawing Donnick. Of all the Jedi characters I've made he's the one that's really been through the ringer and stuck the course. He's not a famous and renowned figure like his mentors, he didn't even start out as a full Jedi when I made him! Back drawing those yoga-loving scrub boy doodles I really wanted to make an OC that had fucked up, run away from his responsibilities and was trying to do a little good where he could. I found it very satisfying to think through his arc of returning to the Jedi Order after his self-imposed exile and rise up to meet the challenges of protecting a galaxy from evil. Exorcising some of my own self-confidence foibles through this OC was very gratifying.
He's also a character who landed some BALLER friendship ties with other people's OCs, foremost of which I have to shoutout to @sotc and her character Cahira for bouncing some of the funnest headcanon and memes around with me.
An honourable mention too to parttimedragon and their character Carter, who some followers of this blog might remember. RPing with them helped form some of Donnick's core values and his openness to love people that he maybe shouldn't! Not sure where PTD went after suddenly quitting tumblr but hope they're thriving, peace and love.
The trait of Donnick's that I like best is his empathy. His Force senses are extremely astute and he feels the emotions of others so deeply that it's a conscious effort to not affect or be affected by those around him (thank you KOTOR 2 for the inspiration there). But it's a trait he'd hold even if he wasn't a Jedi, it's the keystone to everything he does. He trusts when it seems bonkers to do so, he opens his heart and compassion to anyone who asks for help, and fights like hell with his whole heart.
Of course it's gotten him in trouble, a heart on the sleeve is antithetical to the prevailing Jedi mentality, but I like to build casts of characters that support each other so he's had understanding masters who helped him hone his empathy and protect himself from strong influences that otherwise might sweep him away.
Strong influences, such as Jacob. Forbidden or star-crossed love is one of my all time favourite tropes so when I came back to my characters after a break I saw no reason not to indulge in putting together the Hero of Tython and the Emperor's Wrath. A Jedi with the willingness to see the good in a heart that had found its own way to the Light? A Sith that recognised balance and harmony as the only way to build something good in his life, meeting one of the only people with the patience to take his hand and help him rise? Tasty stuff.
I LOVE TO THINK ABOUT HIS FAMILY! The Caya clan, mama Andora and brothers Karo and Donnick estranged for twenty+ years and reuniting again fills my heart. They get to find each other again and CHOOSE to be a family. By all rights Donnick should reject his Jedi-hunting brother but he can't do it. These are the people who passed on their hearts and hoped for him to come home more than anything. The biggest secret Donnick keeps from the Order isn't his romance with Jacob, but that he wants all Jedi to feel how fulfilling it is to be loved unconditionally the way they have to love and protect the galaxy. It makes him stronger, drives him onwards, and gives him something to hold onto in the whirlwind of burdens he lives in. That's true love babyyyyy.
But I also really enjoy that Donnick is a mess! He's imperfect, he's fallible! He constantly wobbles between his own desires and the expectations placed on him. He really wants to believe that he'll choose duty and responsibility above all else, but he just doesn't know! He's got bad habits (still smokes sometimes) and he relishes a fist fight more than he cares to admit, but he tries his best. That's what I like thinking about most, that Donnick will always Try.
I have some playlists and the piece of SW music I like most for him is Eno Cordova's theme from Fallen Order, heroic and melancholy.
I love to redesign his tattoos every time I come back to swtor.
I love his lil hair curls.
Arms.
Ok that's it for now.
“Shasa is a Y-wing pilot and wingmate of Lego Fossang. She is also the squadron’s graphic artist, applying liveries to Starfighters and helmets according to each pilot’s specifications. She hails from Naboo.”
“Enanan was formerly a StarFortress bomber pilot, but now flies a modern B-wing. She specializes in making ungainly craft appear graceful, and has exceptional situational awareness that keeps her from colliding while flying in crowded or fined battle conditions.”
“Recruited by the late Ello Asty from the frontier world of Jaymir, Nimi and her older brother Aarton were held in reserve during the Starkiller crisis. They rejoined the core group of the Resistance after Crait.”
Wrobie Tyce was once a courier ship pilot operating out of Warlentta. When Tyce’s wife, Lama D’Acy, decided to join up with the Resistance to fight the First Order, Lama first requested permission from her family. Tyce not only supported Lama, but signed up as well, adapting her commercial piloting experience for combat and flying an RZ2 A-Wing fighter. Tyce originally flew in Cobalt Squadron, a unit that defended Fabrin and supply lines in the Nanth’ri Route of the Expansion Region. She missed out on the retreat from D’Qar which saw the rest of her squadron destroyed – as she had been reassigned to Snap Wexley. Tyce was deeply relieved to learn that D’Acy had survived the Battle of Crait.
“The daughter of Rebel commanders who led a cell in the Fakir sector during the Galactic Civil War, Dynia Reekeene heard her parents say that they had fought against tyranny so she would not have to. They have since passed, but their words have stuck with her. Reekeene fights in the Resistance so that their efforts are not forgotten.”
Formerly JL-3621, Jayelle took her non-numerical name shortly after the defection of Company 77 at Ansett Island. In her early teens at the time, she benefited from Jannah friendship and support of the older troopers who were impressed by her accuracy in combat. She helped Jannah develop the first powered bow, and it is Jayelle who ensures the continued upkeep of the group’s weapons as she tinkers with ways to improve the design.
