Headcanon ROTTMNT - Donnie was nonverbal/couldn't speak well when he was young

so. I feel like this is something a lot of people think. But I had to share the evidence

in "Bullhop" we learn that Donnie can read lips.

"Oh, I read his lips, he's engaging, perfect"

and in "Todd Scouts" he uses sign language to sign "Explosion/explode" (accurately by the way).

So here's my two theories:

Donnie's autistic. We know this. There's a good chance he could have been a nonverbal child or just didn't learn to speak as quickly. To make up for this, he learned ASL.

Either this, or he was/is partially deaf (which would make sense because he's constantly around technology and science. There's bound to be tons of loud sounds that could potentially damage his hearing. either this or he was just born partially deaf. If he knew how to read lips well, then he'd be able to make up for his partial deafness.

anyways just wanted to share this with someone. my friends aren't rottmnt nerds like i am lol

Since my cat and other cats headbutt people when they want attention/show that they love someone, I am head cannoning that Donnie has that trait.

So I am imagining a scenario where Donnie is going “I am going to headbutt you” to Leo.

Donnie ends up headbutting Leo’s shoulder. And Leo is like “That was less violent than expected.”

Donnie is like, “I’m sorry, do you want it to be violent?”

This ends up with Donnie ramming into Leo and they both end up passed out on the floor.

Raph and Mikey come in a few minutes later, and don’t question anything.

he makes you little trinkets that will hold value in your day-to-day life; like that coffee maker that brews your coffee just the way you like it,

or that subtle purple bracelet that can display a holographic of your daily statistics (your step count, reminders for your day)

it's the way he will forcefully drag himself from his beloved projects in order to spend time with you, as meaningless as it all seems - because he's with you, and that does mean something to him.

it's the way he has no idea what you're talking about, only half-heartedly humming whenever you ask him a question, solely focused on the way you animatedly talk - completely love drunk.

it's the way his guard is lowered in your presence, apparent from the rumbling churr emanating from where he's sitting at his work station - content completely to be in your vicinity, and not daring to break the serenity of the environment to ask for more.

it's the way he forgot how nice it felt to have someone caress soothing circles into his soft shell, becoming complete putty in your hands and melting on the spot - eyes shut, and slightly drooling from the way his body just... relaxes, loses any and all tension.

it's the way you're his first waking thought, and also his last waking memory before sleep takes him.

imma say it again; Donnie is not only autistic, but such a good representation of it

i went on a long, detailed version of this bc i love my turtles and i REALLY love writing my thoughts out, pls bear with me

special, and I mean SPECIAL interests in what he loves (ex: his technology, like the man literally has his own lab for them). there was an episode where he lost his tech, and it shows how uncomfortable and worried he feels without them bc those were his comfort items and his passion

NOT apathetic -> rise conveys that Donnie has low empathy, where instead of showing no emotions at all, he can seem to be distant or uninterested, yet he just has a difficult time expressing those emotions unless it involves his hobbies and his family

there are a lot more clues into how his autism is so well-done, but i think these are the main signs.

this is proof of his autistic swag, please go vote for him in the autismswagsummit!! go donnie!!
