Dive Deep into Creativity: Discover, Share, Inspire
Let's fuckin gooooooo
just a reminder - do NOT boycott streaming services or not watch new things. the unions have not called for one for a reason. for one, it affects residual payments, which as minimal as those currently are, actors are still getting them during this time, and for two, studios will use lack of viewership as an excuse to cancel shows because you are showing them there is no demand. it deeply affects the industry the writers and actors stand to come back to once the strike is over

the way these strikes get framed is always so funny to me
"the strike could stretch on until the end of summer" or the execs could pay their workers
"there won't be ANY new shows because of this strike" or the execs could pay their workers
"no more content for us because the mean old writers and actors are-" OR THE EXECS COULD PAY THEIR WORKERS
Given how more and more games are presented like movies now, that makes sense
YESSSSSSSS
edit: please rb this version! it has more info about the strike, which unfortunately isnt a gamedev one, but is important nonetheless. and if the gamedevs go on strike please @ me so i can meme about it!
This is the most recent reason that I hate David Zaslav’s business practices, but it just might be the last straw
Pirate all your favorite shows, movies, and games while you still have the chance.
It shouldn’t be surprising that writers have some of the best strike signs in existence
Just so we're all on the same page with the writer's strike.
If during the strike, it's announced about AI generated shows. We are not watching them. Not even out of curiosity. Let them fail every AI generated show they try make.
The human voice can not be replaced by AI. Don't let them try.
Oh and quick note for writers:
One difference between this strike and the last one is that there are a lot more fellowships targeted at early career tv writers than there used to be (there have always been some, but the fellowship model is way more commonplace these days)
Studios are about to make a ton more of these opportunities and advertise them widely as a way to break into the industry, and they will be very specific about the fellowship not technically counting as a writers room or a tv job
THIS IS A TRICK TO GET YOU TO SCAB
Sharing any written content with a studio (even if they route it through a 3rd party "foundation" or development org or something) IS SCABBING
What you do in regards to the strike is your business, but the WGA has been very clear that anyone who scabs will be BANNED FROM JOINING THE UNION FOR LIFE. That means even if you get hired, that's no health & pension and no union protections for your entire career. This shit is serious
So please please double check and dig into any new submission opportunities you see in the next weeks. Playwrights especially be careful - many studios are finding their writers through play scripts these days so be very careful about how and where your work is being shared
No writing going to the studios means NO WRITING of any kind
(if you see suspicious fellowship stuff being passed around let me know, I'd love to keep an eye on that for my peeps)
I hope all Big Movie Studio Executives lose their thumbs in a brutal fridge accident
Update from the WGA on negotiations
Maybe the war is finally over 🐙
Why don’t they just pay their writers they have the money and are deliberately not paying them for no reason

It seems like the SAG-AFTRA has a deal too !
So the trailer for Our Flag Means Death Season 2 just went live on youtube, and this is the top comment. I agree with it wholeheartedly.
Aaaaand they did it folks! The WGA has a deal! Now time for SAG-AFTRA !

A small update: A few hours later, here are the two other comments that make up the top 3.

I plan to do just that, and cancel it at the end of the free trial. If there's a "Why are you leaving?" question, I also plan to say that it's because I support the WGA strike (I really don't know if it would matter, but it can't hurt).
Not a question, but I wanted to say out loud that I managed to see the first episode of Sandman on a flight recently. I haven't had cable TV since 1998 and never had a Netflix account, not since *looks at wrist* they started mailing CDs in little red envelopes howevermany years or decades ago. But I'm seriously thinking about finally caving now, simply because of how good that first ep was. Having been braced against giving Amazon any unnecessary money for years, the privilege of actually seeing an episode of Good Omens might take a bit longer, unfortunately, despite being here on this site and witnessing a ton of Posts about it. It is a tease, let me tell you.
just saying.
Why not do a free trial when Good Omens is released?

My dudes
Don’t think of the strike as “wah i’m not getting my shows”.
Think of it as “If they don’t - I’LL NEVER GET ANY SHOWS AGAIN”.
Because, you know, they won’t be there to write them. Because they can’t eat nothing. They can’t write if they have no laptops. Or houses. Or electricity. Or paper. Or pens. Which all funnily enough cost money.
Pay them what they’re worth - or they can’t afford to keep working.
And then no one gets what they want.
WGA on strike….DGA and SAG rumored to follow soon….let’s fucking GOOOOOOOOOO
Mmm no, I hate takes like this. It comes from people who think they're so above it all and think of themselves as magnanimous heros coming to save us poor unfortunate souls from our dire fates. It's most common among self-righteous centrist liberals, but leftists are not immune to that thinking either.
Do all of my political positions come from a place of self-interest? Absolutely not, no. I will fight for someone who is not me any day and everyday. Fighting for someone because they are human and deserve basic human rights and dignity (and to not be hunted/targeted by the state of bigots) is what everyone should do.
But I'm a transgender bisexual Jewish woman with medical conditions that require consistent medical attention. I have a lot of causes that, well, affect me personally and deeply. Am I not allowed to care about trans rights or women's rights of antisemitism just because they affect me and I have self-interest in one outcome?
Fighting for universal healthcare because you think everyone should have quality healthcare even if it means you'll pay more is good. Fighting for universal and because you need qualify healthcare and can't afford it is also good. They're both fighting
I'm going to be honest, "Republicans are bad because they work in self-interest" OR "self-interest is bad because Republicans do it" are worse takes than, "I want my comfort show to keep making episodes, so I'll writers striking because they deserve proper compensation."
Deciding someone's support for a cause is actually bad because they're reason isn't "pure" enough is absolutely worse.
