HONESTLY THIS IS SUCH A MAJOR SCENE? Maekawa speaks of the old form of kenjutsuย ย when warriors measure each other with just a glance. He does this with Kenshin and immediately the two of them begin to laugh, or from my translation of my own manga, Maekawa says this:
โ Donโt worry, Kaoru-kun. Iโve no wish to fight anymore. I can already see that Iโve lost. I gave him my fiercest glare and his eyes just let it flow away.โ
ย Basically this man, older than Kenshin - has lost to him - and not in malicious intent. Kenshin once again was presented with a powerful will, and no matter the will, his eyes just gently, like water, let them flow away - almost like the wind, he acknowledges someoneโs desire to fight him, if they have even an inkling of how powerful he is - and he lets it flow away. He doesnโt want to fight any unnecessary battles and that these two could have a stare-down is a testament to both of them but for this analysis, really, Kenshin, because it shows his depth of will and control .ย
He was offered a fight and his air-tight control and heart easily let it roll off his back. He has no desire. Heโs seen enough fighting than this man has his entire life - and adding another that has no merit save competing forย โstrength titlesโ is useless to a man who is called and feared by all as theย โstrongestโ a title he even claims to Aoshi that he can have because he has noย โneed of itโ all he cares about are the peopleย โwaiting for his help.โย
The combined imagery and how gently Kenshin states with merely his eyes how he has no desire to fight a pointless battle is testament to his character, in my opinion, and his strength of heart - enough strength that he can easily, and gently disarm someoneโs fighting intent aimed towards him with merely a glance, never losing a warriorโs respect for another.
๐ mayu suzukaze literally being every aspect of kenshin is just iconic, the inflections, the delicacy turning to fierceness, the shift between every aspect of kenshinโs facades and inner turmoils to true core emotions is justย ๐ ๐ย and it really fits how seeminglyย โdelicateโ in physique outside (beneath his gi heโs quite muscled without being bulky (which lends itself to his shinsoku / godspeed )ย kenshin appears despite having incredible arm strength / leg strength for his height of 5โฒ2 and really no one that practices hiten mitsurugui-ryu is going to be able to uphold it without having it - and also paying for it like any human being in the most realistic sense.
the first live action film demonstrates and confirms that kenshin doesnโt need to use his sakabato to be able to pulverize and curb-stomp you and then take you to the doctor in less than a minute ! !!! but seriously props to mayu for voicing someone whoโs such a fictional legend / icon and doing it insanely well when i imagine the role would feel intimidating due to kenshinโs considerable fame as a character and protagonist / hero.
frankly i also am vastly impressed in general by sato takeru, who i think the pressure would especially be intimidating if it he wasnโt so joyful about kenshin as a whole embodying all my expectations and wishes of kenshinโs mannerisms and my own headcanons confirmed / perspectives, so i also like his voice as well as much as hers. but there is a nostalgia in mayu, and always will be, so i think itโs a blend of both in a sense?ย
i love how even his voice is complex and a thing in itself. it dips from soft and dulcet to low and fearsome, to formal to goingย โyup!โ in the most unexpected moments orย โhuhโ? i watched some episodes today since tumblr i read was really glitched this month so it will take a while likely for me to get some of my images up when you hover over my url for me, lily, to see so iโll be slow here since itโs mildly irksome, but not unbearable!ย
my first headcanon since...eight months will be about the red gi . i honestly donโt think itโs realistic that he could afford such a fine red gi when itโs heavily implied and outright stated he canโt afford an inn so iโll take some liberties from the films.
I love characters that have never been loved before experiencing it for the first time. They're taken aback by softness. They're confused by warm words and being cared for. They're almost scared by the loving way they're looked at. Fleeting tender touches send them reeling. Their heart almost feel like it's going to burst. What does it mean? All they know is they don't feel as though they deserve that, even if they reciprocate. It's been proven time again that they're unlovable and yet...
Being treated so gently feels so good and they aren't sure they want it to stop.
