I wanted to expand on this idea (since it's been keeping me up at Night) my three thoughts on this are:
#1: There's an angry trouble maker running around.
#2: An AU where you need to get both of the sides of Nightmare back together if you ever want to kill him since they just respond back with each other.
#3: The easiest during a burnout...

Red and blue make purple, right?
Passive!Nightmare is purple, so you can take purple apart into two colors, red and blue..
Corrupted!Nightmare is blue/cyan, which is more often associated with the feelings of sadness.
But who is red?
And that's how I came to the conclusion that there is another, anger (and preferably smaller) Nightmare out there.
