She nods. “I’m just monitoring the frequency of a few boats, they seem to be testing some new hull tech. If it goes wrong, well, let’s say I get lots of time to plot my next move.” She snickers, before making a move.
The Earth, shining big, bright and blue below, decides to shine a little more sharply, lighting up the section they sat in with a glow akin to the light of an aquarium, blue and brilliant, with the stars acting as the fast, silvery fish, and the faint presence of the moon a large ray.
And then, as swiftly as it started, the Earth shone a little less brightly, the stars slinking away back to being little flicks of paint against the deep dark, the moon as rough as sandpaper. “I have not moved anything!” If she could make more faces on her lights than a smiley face, it’d be a very firm frown right now. She highlights the pawns. “See? The pawns haven’t moved since you looked away.” After returning the colours to normal, she moves her rook to stand behind the pawn. “Now it’s your turn.” For a brief moment, she’s focused; not on the game, but something else. Perhaps a stray file or incoming message. She moves, almost suddenly, but does not speak.
John chuckles at her indignation and obediently moves another piece of his own. He's hunched forward, elbows on knees, to be closer to the board. John's free hand ends up bracing his cheek in an effort to keep his head up and the spaceman muffles a yawn in the palm of his hand. At least, with Eos, he doesn't have to pretend he's not tired. She has his stats. She knows it even better than he does.
He notices the red flicker of her lights though, and quirks an eyebrow up at her unit.
"Everything alright?" John asks, "Not stuck for your next move are you?" The nightmare feels more distant now, just one of the many, with the steady glow of the chess set and the peaceful rotation of the Earth through the borosilicate glass below them. "Eos?"
