haymitch sees the female tribute for the 74th hunger games and it’s a girl with the rage of maysilee, fire of louella, empathy of wyatt, blood of burdock, and the same horrible odds as himself. how could sweetheart not slip out?

just realized both haymitch and katniss lost their sisters. haymitch lost three and katniss lost her reason

can you imagine how devastated haymitch must’ve been when the undersees died? that was the last remnant, besides the mockingjay pin she hated so much, of maysilee donner, his begrudged sister. and he finds that maysilee is not the only one with bad luck, no, its her whole family. madge’s best friend was reaped, and then she died, right along with merrilee. merrilee, who was the stunning image of who maysilee would one day resemble. maysilee, who never became that and finally died with her family.

Something that I think is important about Wyatt as a character is how he highlights the stupidity of the district system. I know that the human love of sorting ourselves into categories meant that every YA series for a while had a bunch of different groups with associated traits that tweens could take uquizzes about, but The Hunger Games isn't like Divergent or Harry Potter where young adults get grouped based on their personalities. Sure, the districts all have industries they're known for and the tributes are clearly shaped by wherever they grew up, but being born into District Four doesn't actually mean that you'll like fish. Wyatt is brilliant when it comes to numbers, but in District Twelve he can only channel that into gambling. Imagine if he'd been born into District Three with a father like Beetee, what he could have done with his mathematical talents. There's mention of it with Maysilee too, how she doesn't want to run the candy store but her options are that or the mines.

I guess what I'm saying is that the district system is great for keeping people oppressed because they see their fellows as "other," which is why it is a tool of fascism and not a practical way to run a society. It doesn't matter who is in what group, it matters that they internalize their group identity to the point that they ignore the similarities between them.

thinking about how katniss recognises merrilee when watching the recording of haymitch’s games due to her resemblance to madge; do you think that merrilee got to see maysilee grow up again through madge? do you think merrilee could barely look at madge because she was a reminder of the sister she lost? do you think merrilee saw maysilee in madge before seeing her as madge everytime she looked at her? do you think merrilee broke down when madge turned 17? because her twin never did? do you think merrilee saw madge die seconds before she herself died when district 12 got bombed? that merrilee saw both her twins die in front of her?

My reasoning was that Haymitch's memory of her would have been when he was still a child and saw her as an equal partner going through the same trauma as him- so she looks more determined and ready

Unlike all the others who he would remember as children he was meant to protect as an adult and failed

Also I was so surprised you found her so quickly (but I probably shouldn't have been in hindsight lol)

they all are just so wholesome and too pure for this world😭😭😭😭 I'm really invested in this generation of tributes. It's also really interesting to watch more cooperative tributes, I kinda wish we could see more of others working together. or maybe I'm acting a little bit as capitol public watching the games lol

Heyyy can we talk about how in the hunger games Katie’s is also the mockingjay because she echoes the efforts of those who came before her. Like she is a parallel to Sam many people, mainly Lucy gray and Haymitch who both tried and failed to break the games, and sort of her identity as the mockingjay is to echo the songs of those who came before her- both literal songs, and their actions. Oh also the thing she wore that gave her her name, the mockingjay pin, was inherited from both Lenore Dove and Maysilee, effectively continuing their stories and honoring them… yaknow just saying
