I like the idea of Genya becoming Tanjiros best friend, but there isn't a lot of canon time to solidify that bond and that's like the only part I have trouble with. It was hard to imagine Tanjiro considering Genya his best friend over Zenitsu or Inosuke for me at first. But then I started thinking about it a little deeper, and I realized that the dynamic between Tanjiro and the other two main guys makes Tanjiro the 'straight man' of the group, the one who is on the end of zenitzus raving rants or Inosukes weird challenges and has Tanjiro be the one that keeps everything on track.

He doesn't have to do that with Genya. In fact, I'd even go as far as to say that Tanjiro is the 'weird' one between the two. I don't know if it's just Tanjiros natural weirdness being able to shine brighter when it's not being eclipsed by the other two boys in his trio, or if there's something about Genya that just makes him a little more unhinged, but either way I love it.

Genya is also someone Tanjiro can have series conversations with without worrying about it devolving into chaos (unless you add another of the main boys into the equation, then all bets are off)

I also think it would be very funny if Sanemi witnessed what a little freak tanjiro can be and none of the other hashira believed him.
