this is what I was trying to get at with my gertrudeposting earlier today, though not nearly as thoroughly or eloquently as OP
regardless of its other successes or failures one thing i feel that the magnus archives did really well was create a narrative and worldbuilding that refuses to allow you to categorize its characters by the dichotomy of 'abuser' and 'victim' without ignoring major themes that define the shape and course of the entire story. despite one of its most central themes being that "we all get a choice, even if it doesn't feel like one" many of the characters we encounter are faced with genuinely horrifying ethical dilemmas that emphasize just how difficult that choice actually is to make, and allow the audience to sympathize with their plight even if not with their actions and decisions. many of the avatars are arguably just as much victims of the entities they serve as they are perpetrators of the violence they cause, and those who fight them in many cases choose to descend to monstrosity themselves in order to be able to keep pushing back - a choice some of them try to rationalize to themselves by arguing that the magnitude of the threat they face necessitates that the ends justify the means, but which is nevertheless a choice that they make, and one with a devastatingly high cost that is repeatedly, unflinchingly presented to both them and the audience. the human capacity to exercize our free will for better or for worse whilst taking into account the various internal and external influences that may affect the decisions we make is thoroughly explored with a great deal of care and nuance that i appreciate.

Hot jon rights and all that but there is something so special about jon archivist sims being a solid 3.5 out of 10 because then it makes martin look utterly deranged with the lust he has for the type of guy that you could find en masse at the local stamp club meeting
Favorita abt TMA is that all the boys are the least combatants possible while the girls at any sign of threat want to tear things apart
so true. tma women are all like "I'm gonna kill you badly with my fire and my knives and my worms and my guns and my explosives" and tma men are all like "oohh you'll be sorry for that in four seasons time when I finally have enough trauma to harness into a superpower." even big bad elias is completely weak to physical violence being enacted on him, he had to outsource talking melanie down from stabbing him to jon and it takes him a full scene of mind games to stop basira from knocking him into next week.
this gutted me so badly on first listen that I had genuine difficulty liking Georgie afterwards. I get where she’s coming from, but oof. just straight up telling him that Melanie deserves healing despite the mistakes she’s made and he doesn’t. local guy cannot catch a fucking break
man. whenever jon sims is a relentlessly self-sacrificing martyr everyones like STOP IT YOU’RE NOT HELPING ANYONE BY GETTING YOURSELF KILLED. and then whenever he’s doing what he has to in order to survive everyones like YOU SHOULD CONSIDER STARVING YOURSELF AND DYING INSTEAD. guy cannot win.

Getting into the Magnus Archives fandom before you finish the series is wild because they’ve all made a collective decision to pretend the cast loves each other and it’s all just an office drama, supported by copious fanfic and fanart and things. And then you get to the actual content and it’s like,, most of them genuinely hate each other. Not even in a cute way, they genuinely want each other to die
